Now undrafted, WRs Malachi Wideman and Milton Wright pursue new opportunities

After not being picked in the supplemental draft, WRs Malachi Wideman and Milton Wright pursue new opportunities. Could the Saints sign one of them?

The NFL supplemental draft came and went without any players being selected, and now the two prospects available are weighing their options. Could either of these wide receivers interest the New Orleans Saints? Here’s what’s next for Malachi Wideman and Milton Wright.

KPRC 2 Houston’s Aaron Wilson reports that Wideman has a contract offer from the CFL’s Calgary Stampeders, while the XFL’s San Antonio Brahmas also own his rights. Wilson adds that Wideman plans to work out in front of NFL teams before training camp begins in late July (as does Wright). Wideman moves well at a listed 6-foot-5 but is rail-thin at 190 pounds. He’ll need to bulk up.

He’s a likelier candidate to land with the Saints than Wright, whose poor pro day performance likely disqualifies him in their front office. Wright weighed in at 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds but timed the 40-yard dash in just 4.69 seconds while posting below-par numbers in the jumps and agility drills. That combined for an abysmal 1.31 unofficial Relative Athletic Score. For context, the Saints usually look for a RAS higher than 8 or 9 on the 10-point scale.

New Orleans’ decision-makers haven’t been as strict with their athletic thresholds for undrafted free agents as with draft picks, but it’s tough to see them making room for Wright between that and his being dismissed from Purdue’s team for being academically ineligible. Still, you never know. They could use more depth at receiver with all three of their top options missing time in spring practices due to injuries.

Deion Sanders’ former player could interest Saints in 2023 supplemental draft

One of Deion Sanders’ former players could make sense for the Saints. Jackson State wide receiver Malachi Wideman entered the 2023 supplemental draft | @crissy_froyd

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

The NFL is reviving the supplemental draft in 2023, with a handful of players emerging as potential targets for the New Orleans Saints. One of which is former Jackson State wide receiver Malachi Wideman, who saw action under Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders at JSU in addition to playing at Tennessee.

As was first reported by NFL insider Aaron Wilson, the former Volunteer is one of a very small number of players who have entered the supplemental draft. He is the second to do so along with former Purdue Boilermakers wide receiver Milton Wright.

Wideman tallied 540 yards on 34 catches with 12 touchdowns in his first season with Coach Prime’s team, quickly making a statement across the SWAC. Those 12 trips to the end zone would led the conference in 2021, making room for high expectations for Wideman to build off of that in a big way for the 2022 season. That was not quite the case, though, as he recorded just three catches and a single score in 2022.

It will be interesting to see where Wideman lands — potentially New Orleans — when the supplemental draft kicks off on July 11. Teams may submit any of their 2024 draft picks in the 2023 supplemental draft to select a player, but the Saints have just five selections right now. They may opt to wait and sign anyone not picked in the supplemental draft as a free agent.

The Saints are led at wide receiver by Michael Thomas and Chris Olave, with the new addition of sixth-round former Wake Forest pass-catcher AT Perry also in the fold. There’s been talk of Perry becoming one of the biggest steals of the 2023 NFL Draft and while he and some of the other names on the roster could become notable standouts, there’s always room for more depth.

Will the Browns be interested in a former Deion Sanders’ player?

Former Jackson State Star Malachi Wideman declared for the NFL Supplemental draft. Could the Browns be interested?

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

Malachi Wideman, a wide receiver from Jackson State and the Tennessee Volunteers, has declared for the NFL Supplemental draft as per Aaron Wilson. The Supplemental Draft will be held on July 11. The 6-foot-5 and 200-pound wide receiver started his college career at Tennessee in 2020 before transferring to Deion Sanders’ Jackson State. Could the Cleveland Browns find interest?

In his first season with the Tigers, Malachi recorded 540 yards on 34 catches and 12 touchdowns. His 12 touchdowns would lead the SWAC in 2021. Unfortunately, Malachi failed to improve on his 2021 season, recording just three catches and a touchdown in 2022. Malachi was purportedly in Deion Sanders’ dog house for most of the season for unknown reasons.

Before Malachi was at Jackson State, he was a freshman at Tennessee during the shortened 2020 season. Malachi was the Volunteers’ class of 2020 highest-ranked wide receiver recruit, over future Biletnikoff winner Jalin Hyatt. Malachi was not just a four-star football recruit, he was also a four-star basketball recruit. As a freshman, Wideman had one catch for 24 yards against Kentucky. Malachi decided to transfer after Tennessee fired their coaching staff in 2020.

Wideman has been training at former NFL star Brandon Marshall’s training facility, House of Athletes, this offseason in preparation for the NFL. The former two-sport star will be anxious to hear his name called in the Supplemental Draft on July 11.

The Supplemental draft is an auction, where teams bid next year’s draft picks on prospects for this season. If a prospect isn’t selected in the Supplemental draft they are eligible to sign with any NFL team as a free agent. So far only Malachi Wideman and former Purdue Boilermaker Milton Wright have declared for the Supplemental draft.

Could the Browns look to pair David Bell or Cedric Tillman with their former college teammate? It is possible. The Browns have relied on the Supplemental Draft before. In 2012 the Browns selected Josh Gordon as a second-round pick. The Browns will leave no stone unturned to find talent.

Dolphins Wire UDFA Player Profile: LB Aubrey Miller Jr.

What is Miami getting in the Jackson State linebacker?

A week after the 2023 NFL draft process, the Miami Dolphins brought in nearly two dozen rookie free agents, affectionately known as UDFAs. These undrafted free agents can get calls throughout the draft weekend. If their names aren’t called for national recognition with an announced selection by a team, another call could happen seconds after the final pick.

Miami made quick work in signing their class of 2023 UDFAs, and Dolphins fans know currently rostered players who made a name for themselves in training camp, regardless of not hearing theirs a few months prior.

Recently, cornerback Kader Kohou excelled in 2022, while tight end Tanner Conner made the initial 53-man roster last year as well. Offensive lineman Robert Jones was a UDFA who cracked the team and lineup in each of the last two seasons.

Cornerback Nik Needham is another current Dolphin who was even a practice squad player following being undrafted. About a month or so into the 2019 season, Needham was called up, so to speak, and earned his role.

Almost immediately into the 2023 undrafted time window, Jackson State linebacker Aubrey Miller Jr. was signed by general manager Chris Grier and the Dolphins.

Starting his college career at Missouri before transferring in 2020, Miller was a star for Deion Sanders at Jackson State. Miller was named All-SWAC and the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2022, while Sanders is now the head coach at Colorado.

While a bit undersized, at 6 feet tall, Miller is a very solid 229 pounds and built like a truck. A capable tackler in the open field, ball-carriers will likely remember being hit by Miller.

A solid project for linebacker-savvy defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, Miller is also a candidate to make a name for himself on special teams in coverage duties. With some appearances in college on coverage units, he showed promise. This could be his ticket to a practice squad role at least, and he could challenge for training camp social media supremacy within the fan base.

Some scouts pegged Miller as a sixth or seventh-round pick, so when looking at UDFA value, Grier may have found another diamond in the rough.

Should Miller make a run for linebacker duties immediately, his areas of strength would be blitzing as opposed to defending the pass in coverage.

With fine intangibles, he was warranted as an early signee with Miami, as his Jackson State coach Sanders gave a glowing endorsement.

“Aubrey is one of the guys that we hang our hats on in the middle of the defense, making calls, getting to the ball, flying around, and really setting the tone and the tempo,” Sanders said. “Not just on game day, but in practice as well.”

Miller was a team leader and led by example for Coach “Prime,” ranking ninth in the FCS last season with 112 total tackles, averaging 8.6 per game. He also added 6.5 sacks and five forced fumbles. He has a high motor and could be a spark-time player in multiple phases of the game.

NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein said Miller has “vision and anticipation to shadow runner’s lane choices. He’s fearless to crash hard and punish downhill runners and has had impressive flashes in limited special-teams snaps.”

How Deion Sanders described Dolphins UDFA LB Aubrey Miller

That’s a ringing endorsement.

The Miami Dolphins added 21 undrafted players following the completion of the 2023 NFL draft, and one of the more interesting prospects signed was Jackson State linebacker Aubrey Miller.

Miller, standing at 6 feet and weighing 229 pounds, is a bit undersized for the NFL, but he put together a strong collegiate career. He led the Southwestern Athletic Conference with 109 tackles, and he also recorded 6.5 sacks in 2021.

Last season, he recorded 117 tackles (12 for a loss), 6.5 sacks and five forced fumbles. That performance earned him SWAC Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2022.

Despite playing at a smaller school in Jackson State, they had some national attention in recent years due to the arrival and departure of head coach Deion Sanders, who’ll be coaching Colorado this upcoming season.

Sanders, last November, spoke on Miller, and it really says a lot about the player the Dolphins could be getting.

“He’s matured a lot,” Sanders said (transcribed by the Miami Herald). “The guy plays his heart out. He goes about his job really professionally and hard. Aubrey is one of the guys that we hang our hats on in the middle of the defense, making calls, getting to the ball, flying around, and really setting the tone and the tempo. Not just on game day, but in practice as well.”

Energy and passion aren’t something this defense lacks, but more of it is always needed. If Miller can bring that each and every day, he could steal a spot on the practice squad or even the active roster depending on how well he performs.

Deion Sanders tweets out to Patriots’ final draft pick

Deion Sanders applauded the Patriots’ Isaiah Bolden draft pick, while calling out 31 other teams.

Colorado coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders tweeted out a congratulations to his former player, Jackson State cornerback Isaiah Bolden, who was drafted in the seventh round to the New England Patriots on Saturday.

However, along with talking up Bolden, Sanders also called out the 31 other teams that passed on HBCU players.

“So proud is you [Isaiah Bolden],” Sanders posted on Twitter. “You deserved to be drafted much higher but I’m truly proud of u. I know how much u want this. I’m ashamed of the 31 other NFL teams that couldn’t find draft value in ALL of the talented HBCU players & we had 3 more draft worthy players at JSU.”

Bolden was the only HBCU player drafted this year after four were selected in the 2022 NFL draft.

There’s clearly a bunch of talent in HBCU schools that haven’t received the recognition they deserve, and in many ways, having a legendary name like Sanders tied to Jackson State, helped elevate those programs.

Bolden is an electric athlete that could pop immediately for the Patriots as a kick returner. He led the FCS in kick return average in 2021 with 36.9 yards per return.

So he’s certainly a player capable of helping the Patriots right out of the gates.

10 potential undrafted free agents the Eagles could target after the 2023 NFL draft

We’re looking at ten potential undrafted free agents the Philadelphia Eagles could target after the 2023 NFL draft

The 2023 NFL draft is almost complete, and the Eagles are just getting started with filling their 90-man roster for this summer’s intense training camp sessions.

Howie Roseman has been open about previous undrafted free agent classes, with several big-named stars holding second-day draft grades.

One week after the 2022 NFL draft, the team announced the signings of 12 undrafted rookies ahead of the minicamp.

Four eventually found their way onto the 53-man roster at some point.

We reported last week that Philadelphia led all teams with $1.8 million spent in the previous year in post-draft contracts, and Howie Roseman annually is known as one being the biggest spenders after the draft.

Recent undrafted free agents who’ve had game action with Philadelphia include Reed Blankenship, Britain Covey, Josh Jobe, Corey Clement, Sua Opeta, Nate Herbig, Kayode Awosika, Joe Ostman, Jack Stoll, Brett Toth, Greg Ward, Marvin Wilson, T.J. Edwards, and future Hall of Famer Jason Peters, who originally signed with the Bills.

We’re previewing ten prospects Philadelphia could target at the draft’s completion.

7 small school prospects for the Eagles to watch at 2023 Senior Bowl

We’re looking at 7 small school prospects for the Philadelphia Eagles to watch at the 2023 Senior Bowl

The NFL draft starts in Mobile, and even with the Eagles preparing to face the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII, all eyes this week will be on Alabama, for the 2023 Reese’s Senior Bowl.

The Eagles are no strangers to targeting small school players in the NFL draft and the results have mostly been positive.

Philadelphia used the 2016 Senior Bowl to analyze Carson Wentz and Howie Roseman used the No. 2 pick on the former North Dakota State star.

Dallas Goedert, Todd Herreman, Jeremiah Trotter, and Brian Westbrook also make the list.

With kickoff from Mobile quickly approaching, here are seven small school prospects to watch at the Senior Bowl on Saturday.

Former Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer to join Deion Sanders’ staff at Colorado

The former Vikings head coach is back in the game at the college level

Former Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer hasn’t coached football since the Vikings fired him nearly a year ago. While there have been rumors of Zimmer getting back to coaching, nothing had been confirmed, at least not until Monday. Deion Sanders confirmed in an interview Monday that the former Vikings head coach would be joining his staff this upcoming season at the University of Colorado, although his role was not specified.

“Coach Zimmer’s coming, too, by the way. So another two head coaches. One in the NFL as well as collegiate. But not only that. Forget the titles — they know this game and they know kids and they’ve been capable of making tremendous decisions with the kids and the young men in mind. So that’s what I adore the most — understanding how to establish the relationships with these young men.”

Zimmer also served as an analyst for Sanders while he was at Jackson State, but it sounds as if this role may be bigger. Zimmer and Sanders’ relationship dates back to when both were together on the Dallas Cowboys when Zimmer was a defensive assistant, and Sanders was a star player.

PFF Ranks Top 25 Players who Entered 22-23 College Football Transfer Portal

Just how big of a get was Sam Hartman for Notre Dame? Uhh, big.

The preliminary window for players in the college football transfer portal to sign with a new school is drawing to a close so we thought it’d be a good time to look back and see where the best players to enter it wound up.  Alright, we did think that but with Notre Dame adding quarterback [autotag]Sam Hartman[/autotag] from Wake Forest and so many national outlets loving the pickup for the Irish, we thought we’d compare him to some of the other top players in the portal.

[lawrence-related id=67130]

In an effort to eliminate any bias we went to the folks at Pro Football Focus who ranked the top 25 players to enter the portal this off-season.  That way it wasn’t just us reminding you how big Notre Dame’s pickup of Sam Hartman was, but instead using an objective party.  Here is how PFF ranked not just Hartman but the 25 best players in the portal this off-season.
