Will the Browns be interested in a former Deion Sanders’ player?

Former Jackson State Star Malachi Wideman declared for the NFL Supplemental draft. Could the Browns be interested?

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

Malachi Wideman, a wide receiver from Jackson State and the Tennessee Volunteers, has declared for the NFL Supplemental draft as per Aaron Wilson. The Supplemental Draft will be held on July 11. The 6-foot-5 and 200-pound wide receiver started his college career at Tennessee in 2020 before transferring to Deion Sanders’ Jackson State. Could the Cleveland Browns find interest?

In his first season with the Tigers, Malachi recorded 540 yards on 34 catches and 12 touchdowns. His 12 touchdowns would lead the SWAC in 2021. Unfortunately, Malachi failed to improve on his 2021 season, recording just three catches and a touchdown in 2022. Malachi was purportedly in Deion Sanders’ dog house for most of the season for unknown reasons.

Before Malachi was at Jackson State, he was a freshman at Tennessee during the shortened 2020 season. Malachi was the Volunteers’ class of 2020 highest-ranked wide receiver recruit, over future Biletnikoff winner Jalin Hyatt. Malachi was not just a four-star football recruit, he was also a four-star basketball recruit. As a freshman, Wideman had one catch for 24 yards against Kentucky. Malachi decided to transfer after Tennessee fired their coaching staff in 2020.

Wideman has been training at former NFL star Brandon Marshall’s training facility, House of Athletes, this offseason in preparation for the NFL. The former two-sport star will be anxious to hear his name called in the Supplemental Draft on July 11.

The Supplemental draft is an auction, where teams bid next year’s draft picks on prospects for this season. If a prospect isn’t selected in the Supplemental draft they are eligible to sign with any NFL team as a free agent. So far only Malachi Wideman and former Purdue Boilermaker Milton Wright have declared for the Supplemental draft.

Could the Browns look to pair David Bell or Cedric Tillman with their former college teammate? It is possible. The Browns have relied on the Supplemental Draft before. In 2012 the Browns selected Josh Gordon as a second-round pick. The Browns will leave no stone unturned to find talent.

Cricket Celebration Bowl What Happened

In a thrilling finish, NC Central took the overtime lead on QB Davius Richard’s one-yard pounding TD, and Shedeur Sanders failed to connect on his fourth down throw into the end zone on Jackson State’s turn.

Richard hit Latrell Collier for a touchdown pass for a late 34-27 Eagle lead, but Sanders drove the Tigers 81 yards with his 19-yard touchdown pass to Travis Hunter – and the extra point – forcing overtime. Sanders finished with 329 passing yards and four scores, and he ran for a touchdown.

– It was everything you want a bowl game to be. The intensity was there from the start on both sides, there were wild momentum swings, just one turnover, and a ton of energy and emotion. You’re not going to see a harder-played bowl game until the College Football Playoff.

– Jackson State got out to a slow start and rallied back, but its struggles to tackle proved costly. NC Central kept on pounding away, dominated the clock, and ended up being the more physical team, at least on the offensive side. Jackson State was hardly soft, but NC Central was able to bash.

Davius Richard, QB NC Central
Richard completed 15-of-20 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown, led the team with 94 rushing yards and a touchdown, and caught a pass for 31 yards.

Cricket Celebration Bowl What It All Means

No, this doesn’t mean that much going forward for the Deion Sanders era at Colorado. With that said, it’s not a great look that this is the second Celebration Bowl in a row that his team didn’t rise up and produce.

Last year his Tigers were boatraced by South Carolina State, and this time around the perfect season was stopped by an Eagle team that brought its A game from the start.

Was it a lack of focus with all that’s going on with his new gig? That might be a stretch, and it might not be fair – give NC Central credit for getting it done. That was a fight to the very end.

6-1. That’s what the MEAC is now in the Celebration Bowl against the SWAC, with the only loss by NC Central in 2016. Head coach Trei Oliver had his team ready, but this was hardly a crazy upset. The Eagles cranked up the offense all year long, it had talent, and it had a quarterback in Richard who could be the calmest guy in the room and get the job done.

2022-2023 Bowl Schedule, Predictions

Jackson State’s Travis Hunter hauled in an incredible touchdown with 2 seconds left to force overtime

An unbelievable catch!

Jackson State’s do-it-all football star Travis Hunter kept his team’s hopes alive during the Celebration Bowl on Saturday.

Needing a touchdown to force overtime against North Carolina Central, Jackson State quarterback Shedeur Sanders found Hunter in the end zone for a bomb in the game’s final seconds. Hunter came down with the breathtaking touchdown to set up the tying kick.

It’s just not common to see a player like Hunter make a catch like this. He primarily plays cornerback for Jackson State, but he’s filtered into the passing game some just because he’s so talented.

The play kept Jackson State in the game and gave Hunter plenty of reason to feel confident in his ability to turn heads on both sides of the ball.

Now that’s how you score an overtime-forcing touchdown right before the final horn. While Jackson State lost the contest 41-34, Hunter’s outstanding catch will still become the stuff of legend.

Hunter clearly has a bright future ahead of him in football, with him likely following head coach Deion Sanders to Colorado.

For now, Jackson State fans will be able to look back fondly at someone who will more than likely go down as one of the best players in the program’s history.

Deion Sanders teared up in one final emotional moment with Jackson State

This was quite a pregame hype session.

Deion Sanders didn’t hide his emotions when addressing the Jackson State locker room for his last game as the team’s head coach.

With Jackson State taking on North Carolina Central in the Celebration Bowl on Saturday, Sanders finished out his time with the program before he heads West to coach the Colorado Buffaloes.

Sanders’ stint with Jackson State has led to to a resurgence of the school’s football team. His final game coaching was a historic moment for all involved.

Joining his players for the pregame pep talk, Sanders became overwhelmed with feelings as he got his guys hyped up one last time.

Well, that was bound to be the pregame locker room hype video of the day. It’s not often you see a guy in tears before putting on sunglasses and dancing in the locker room with his players.

Even though Sanders will be headed elsewhere next season, it’s commendable what he’s done for the Jackson State football team. These intentionally silly pregame hype sessions are one thing, but his legacy with the program feels pretty cemented.

Stephen A. Smith delivered an epic GameDay pick with Jackson State ‘big time’ over Southern

“Jackson State big time, today!”

Sometimes, ESPN’s College GameDay‘s celebrity guest pickers don’t do a great job or entirely unmemorable.

Stephen A. Smith, of course, was anything but, and he stole the show at the end while making his picks for Saturday’s games.

For Week 9 of the college football season, GameDay visited Deion Sanders and Jackson State for the first time ahead of the Tigers’ rivalry matchup against Southern on Saturday in Jackson, Mississippi. It’s the fourth time the show has traveled to an HBCU and first since last year’s North Carolina Central-Alcorn State game.

It’s hardly surprising Smith was so good on GameDay, and when it came time to share his pick for the marquee game, he didn’t disappoint, delivering an epic pick for Jackson State as 18-point favorites over the Jaguars.

Stephen A. said galvanizing the crowd behind him:

“I didn’t fly down here this morning to watch my brother, Prime Time, lose a game. Jackson State went eight consecutive years losing to Southern before they broke that streak last year, and they beat them. They’re gonna do it again! Jackson State big time, today! They take them out! That’s why I’m here! That’s why I’m here!”

Smith also shared a special moment with Sanders and showed his love for HBCUs as a Winston-Salem State grad:

Update: Stephen A. Smith was spot-on, as Jackson State won, 35-0.

Jackson State and Snoop Dogg had fun celebrating in the locker room after Deion Sanders’ team improved to 7-0

Snoop Dogg was at Jackson State’s homecoming game and celebrated the Tigers’ victory with them.

Deion Sanders and Jackson State had a lot to celebrate on Saturday.

Not only did the Tigers win their homecoming game against Campbell, 22-14, but they also held onto their undefeated record and advanced to 7-0 on the season.

And nothing says victory like a dance party with Snoop Dogg, who was at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium for the day’s festivities.

After Jackson State came out on top in the homecoming matchup, the Tigers celebrated with the rapper with a locker room dance party that looked like a blast. And thanks to Deion Sanders Jr. tweeting a video — along with photos in an Instagram post from Prime Time — fans caught a glimpse of the team’s postgame celebration.

About Snoop Dogg, Sanders wrote in his Instagram caption:

“When the Dogg Show up it’s a must that we show out. @snoopdogg we’ve been down ever since Sony was with Cher. I love my brother 2 life. His love for kids and his heart for the Community is unmatched. This is Family here.”

Snoop Dogg is an ongoing supporter of Sanders and his team, and in 2020, the rapper said he was happy to help give the HBCU a boost. Via the Clarion Ledger:

“Deion is a friend of mine, my family is from Mississippi so I’m going to be going out there working with him, helping him get that thing movin’ and groovin’,” Snoop Dogg said back then on Shannon Sharpe’s online show “Club Shay Shay.”

Jackson State vs South Carolina State Cricket Celebration Bowl Preview

– Deion Sanders took a good Jackson State football program and made it great. The Tigers were 4-8 in 2019, went 4-3 in the 2021 spring season after Sanders took over, and then it all kicked in with an 11-1 season – the only loss in a great, low-scoring battle with ULM of the FBS world – and a SWAC championship.

South Carolina State had a bit of a disappointing season, but it managed to with the MEAC title and get here with wins in five of its last six games. Legendary head coach Buddy Pough has a solid, veteran team built around good lines and a defense that takes the ball away in bunches.

– Jackson State wins on defense, but it has a terrific passing offense led by Shedeur Sanders. Deion’s son is the first player from an HBCU to win the Jerry Rice award as the best freshman in the FCS, throwing for over 3,000 yards with 29 touchdown passes with just six picks. He ran for three scores, too.

Jackson State (1-0) vs Grambling State (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Jackson State Will Win

Jalon Jones and the passing game were terrific in the 53-0 blowout win over Edward Waters to kick things off.

Jones hit 17-of-19 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns, he was able to spread the ball around well, and overall, he and the offense got a chance to sharpen things up without a whole lot of pressure.

Head coach Deion Sanders is still going to need a little while to get all the parts working, but with the transfers he was able to land and the pieces in place, he’s got the talent to roll through most of the SWAC.

Get the O going, and Grambling State should struggle a bit to keep up if the downfield passing game hasn’t improved from the 2019 version.

Why Grambling State Will Win

If there’s anything even slightly glitchy about the Jackson State win over Edward Waters it was a running game that averaged just 4.4 yards per carry.

The Grambling State version of the Tigers have a playmaking quarterback in Geremy Hickenbottom, who was a decent passer a few years ago but was fantastic on the move, coming up with a team-leading 668 yards and six scores.

There might not be the high-end star talent that Prime was able to bring in, but these Tigers have good experience and enough playmakers – WR Lyndon Rash is going to be an issue – to make this a fight.

What’s Going To Happen

Welcome to the Grambling State defense.

It might be missing the top players from the 2019 version, but it’s still going to be a nasty bunch that’s going to be solid against the run and come up with a decent day from the secondary.

Jackson State has a game in and was ready for Mississippi Valley State last week before the plug got pulled. It has the experience and the right mix of players to win this, but Grambling will grind its way to a strong win.

Why Mississippi Valley State Will Win

If there’s anything even slightly glitchy about the Jackson State 53-0 win over Edward Waters it was a running game that averaged just 4.4 yards per carry.

That’s getting very, very nitpicky, but considering Mississippi Valley State centers its defense around one of the best defensive players in the SWAC – senior Jerry Garner LB/DE Jerry Garner – around a group that isn’t going to be all that terrible against the run, the pressure needs to be on to make the Tigers get hot from the start with the passing game. But …

Why Jackson State Will Win

Jalon Jones and the passing game were terrific.

Jones hit 17-of-19 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns, he was able to spread the ball around well, and overall, he and the offense got a chance to sharpen things up without a whole lot of pressure.

Head coach Deion Sanders is still going to need a little while to get all the parts working, but with the transfers he was able to land and the pieces in place, he’s got the talent to roll through most of the SWAC – especially this Delta Devil team that’s still improving.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not going to be the light scrimmage the Edward Waters game was, but Jackson State won’t have any issues with a balanced offense getting up early and the defense holding down a Delta Devil team that’s going to struggle cranking up the big plays deep.
