Panthers sign 2 players to practice squad on Wednesday

The Panthers restocked their practice squad with a couple of familiar names on Wednesday.

The Carolina Panthers restocked their practice squad this morning.

Wide receiver Dax Milne and linebacker Jackson Mitchell were officially signed to the group on Wednesday. Both have previously spent time on Carolina’s practice squad this season.

Milne was selected by the Washington Commanders (or the then-Washington Football Team) in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL draft. He’d go on to serve primarily as a special teams weapon over his two seasons there, amassing a league-high 40 punt returns at an average of 7.8 yards per attempt in 2022.

Mitchell first joined the Panthers as an undrafted free agent following this year’s draft. The University of Connecticut rookie will now enter his third stint with the organization, a day after signing with the United Football League’s Memphis Showboats.

The two will fill the spots left vacant by yesterday’s promotions of wide receiver Dan Chisena and linebacker Jacoby Windmon. Chisena and Windmon were signed to the active roster on Tuesday after the Panthers placed linebackers Trevin Wallace and Claudin Cherelus on injured reserve.

Panthers part ways with 2 players on Tuesday

The Panthers parted ways with a pair of linebackers this afternoon.

Wide receiver Jonathan Mingo wasn’t the only player the Carolina Panthers parted ways with on Tuesday.

As first noted by team reporter Kassidy Hill, the Panthers have waived linebacker Jacoby Windmon from the active roster and released linebacker Jackson Mitchell from the practice squad.

Windmon joined the Panthers back on Oct. 15, when he was signed off the Pittsburgh Steelers’ practice squad. The 23-year-old rookie appeared in Carolina’s last three games, with all 43 of his snaps coming on special teams.

He recorded one tackle in the Week 7 loss to the Washington Commanders and one tackle in this past Sunday’s win over the New Orleans Saints.

Between the departures of Windmon and Mingo, who was traded to the Dallas Cowboys this morning, the Panthers now have two open spots on their active roster. Those vacancies could be filled by rookie running Jonathon Brooks and rookie defensive lineman Jaden Crumedy, who may be activated by 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

Panthers sign rookie LB back to practice squad on Tuesday

With injuries to both of their starting middle linebackers, the Panthers signed back a familiar face on Tuesday.

Since they’re suddenly quite little in the middle, the Carolina Panthers brought back a familiar face at linebacker on Tuesday.

As announced this afternoon, the team has signed rookie Jackson Mitchell to their practice squad. Mitchell, who initially joined the Panthers as an undrafted free agent this past spring, spent the offseason as a member of the roster.

Mitchell’s return follows the news of this past Sunday’s injuries to starting middle linebackers Shaq Thompson and Josey Jewell. Thompson tore his Achilles tendon in the Week 4 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals and will be out for the remainder of the season while Jewell is expected to miss some time with hamstring and groin issues.

Head coach Dave Canales talked about the long-term loss of Thompson yesterday.

“I’m just sick for Shaq,” Canales told reporters. “A guy that really just cares so much and plays with so much passion. A vocal leader. Somebody’s who had my back through this process as I get my feet underneath me as a first-time head coach.”

To make room for Mitchell on the practice squad, the Panthers released cornerback Azizi Hearn.

Raiders claim LB Jackson Mitchell of waivers from Panthers

Raiders claim LB Jackson Mitchell of waivers from Panthers

With just ten days before the NFL roster cutdown from 90 to 53 players, the Raiders made a move today, claiming former Panthers LB Jackson Mitchell off waivers.

Mitchell is an undrafted rookie out of UConn who the Panthers waived on Friday.

As a Senior last season, Mitchell led the Huskies in tackles, racking up 113 combined tackles, seven for a loss. His 9.4 tackles per game was the 19th most in FBS.

Mitchell earned All-New England honors for the third-straight season last year and was invited to both the Hula Bowl and the East-East Shrine Bowl.

Panthers add another offensive lineman on Friday

The Panthers have added a veteran hog molly.

The Carolina Panthers are really making sure that they have enough hog mollies ahead of their second preseason outing of the summer.

As announced on Friday afternoon, the team has signed guard Ike Boettger. The 29-year-old is now the fourth offensive lineman added by the Panthers over the past week—joining Jack Anderson, Tyler Smith and Mason Brooks.

A Cedar Falls native, Boettger stayed local for his collegiate ball—playing at the University of Iowa from 2013 to 2017. He started in 22 of his 30 games for the Hawkeyes, seeing most of his work at the right tackle position.

Boettger then cracked into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Buffalo Bills in 2018. The 6-foot-6, 313-pounder—who has appeared in 36 pro games—also picked up stops with the Kansas City Chiefs, the Indianapolis Colts and, most recently, the Detroit Lions.

Carolina is currently dealing with a handful of injuries along their offensive front—including to tackles Yosh Nijman and Badara Traore and interior linemen Chandler Zavala and Cade Mays. Boettger will, presumably, provide some depth for Saturday night’s exhibition against the New York Jets.

In the corresponding move to make room for Boettger, the Panthers waived rookie linebacker Jackson Mitchell.
