Friday Night Notes: Oklahoma QB commit dazzles, 2 top recruits joined at hip, more

We begin in Denton, Texas.

USA TODAY High School Sports‘ Friday Night Notes is a weekly high school football recruiting recap that looks at the latest news from around the country—from the Class of 2023 to ’24 and beyond.

We begin in Denton, Texas, where one of the top quarterback recruits of the class of 2023 put on a show Thursday night in his season debut. Denton Guyer starting quarterback Jackson Arnold has committed to playing his college ball at Oklahoma, and Sooners fans should be salivating at what he put on tape last night.

In a 47-14 win over Rockwell-Heath (Texas), the five-star recruit posted some Sportscenter-worthy highlight plays.

Arnold threw three touchdown passes, including this 63-yard bomb.

Later on, Arnold also ran for a 64-yard touchdown.

Arnold is ranked No. 14 in the country and he’s the No. 5 quarterback in his class. More performances like this will have him moving up those rankings soon…

Oklahoma five-star QB commit Jackson Arnold dazzles in first game of season

In the first game of his senior season, five-star QB commit Jackson Arnold puts on a show throwing for 3 touchdowns and running for another.

After an entire off-season that saw him go from a four-star quarterback prospect to five-star status and a commitment to the University of Oklahoma, Jackson Arnold finally took to the field Thursday evening to kick off the final season of his high school career. It was a dominant effort from him and his Denton Guyer team, who have state championship aspirations again after going to the state title game the last two years.

Arnold put on a clinic showing off the dual-threat ability that was incredibly enticing to Oklahoma offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby. Arnold threw for three touchdowns and used his legs to take a zone read 64 yards to the house for a fourth touchdown as Denton Guyer cruised to a 47-14 win over Rockwall Heath.

One of Arnold’s touchdown throws went to 2024 recruit Eli Bowen, a two-way player for Guyer who is also being recruited by Oklahoma and is the younger brother of 2023 safety recruit Peyton Bowen, who the Sooners have been trying to flip from Notre Dame for months.

Where do the Oklahoma Sooners land in the updated On3 Sports team recruiting rankings?

On3 Recruiting recently released an updated look at the 2023 class. Where does Oklahoma land in their team recruiting rankings?

The Oklahoma Sooners are sitting pretty with the 2023 recruiting class in the final full week of August. As things stand on August 21, they have 20 players pledged to join them next year, led by five-star quarterback Jackson Arnold.

EDGE rusher Adepoju Adebawore recently received five-star status from On3 Recruiting and in the 247Sports Composite, giving Oklahoma their first recruiting class with two five-star players since the 2019 cycle.

This Friday, August 26, targets Makari Vickers and Anthony Evans are expected to make their commitments. As things stand right now, the Sooners look to be the leaders in the recruiting battle. A lot can change in a week, but things are looking good for Brent Venables and his staff.

In addition to those pledges, the Sooners are still in a favorable position for four-star wide receiver [autotag]Malachi Coleman[/autotag] and five-star defensive lineman [autotag]David Hicks[/autotag]. Additionally, Oklahoma is still in the thick of it for blue chip running back Stacey Gage.

On3 Recruiting recently updated their database so let’s see where the Sooners land in their team recruiting rankings.

Oklahoma Sooners 2023 recruiting class commitment tracker

Oklahoma Sooners 2023 commitment tracker

The Oklahoma Sooners 2023 recruiting class is coming together quite nicely after a strong June, July, and start to August.

Since June 1, the Sooners have added 15 commitments. They added nine commitments in July, with eight rated as four-star players. Also, in July, quarterback Jackson Arnold saw his stock rise after winning the Elite 11 MVP award, earning five-star status.

Their 2023 recruiting class is currently ranked No. 6 in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings and No. 9 according to the On3 Consensus.

Oklahoma is still awaiting decisions from five-star defensive lineman [autotag]David Hicks[/autotag], four-star cornerback [autotag]Makari Vickers[/autotag], four-star athlete [autotag]Malachi Coleman[/autotag], and four-star wide receiver [autotag]Anthony Evans[/autotag]. With those dominoes still to fall, the Sooners could see their class push into the top three by national signing day.

While we await the next commitment to the 2023 recruiting class, here’s a look at who’s locked in and where they rank in the 247Sports composite and the On3 consensus rankings.

Sooners’ target Malachi Coleman includes Oklahoma in top 7

The Sooners remain in contention for 2023 ATH Malachi Coleman, who includes Oklahoma in his top seven.

You can’t teach size, and 2023 four-star athlete Malachi Coleman has size in spades. Out of Lincoln, Neb., the top 100 prospect, stands 6-foot-5, providing an incredible catch radius for quarterbacks to get him the ball.

Looking to wind down his recruitment, Malachi Coleman released his top seven, which includes Nebraska, Oklahoma, USC, Michigan, Oregon, Ole Miss, and Georgia.

While the Cornhuskers look to be the heavy favorites to land Coleman, don’t count the Sooners out just yet. They’ve got one of the best quarterbacks in the 2023 class in [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag] and one of the best offensive coordinators in college football in [autotag]Jeff Lebby[/autotag]. That’s a great situation for a player of Coleman’s talent to land.

In addition to his size, Coleman has blazing speed, running a 10.46 100-meter dash as a junior. He also competes in the triple jump and the 200-meter dash. Additionally, he plays varsity basketball for Lincoln East.

Here’s what Midlands Region Recruiting Analyst for 247Sports, Gabe Brooks had to say about Coleman.

Unique, high-ceiling football player with outstanding athleticism and physical tools. May need some time to physically and technically develop, but potential is through the roof. Projects as a high-major recruit with the long-term upside to get drafted, possibly in the top half.

One month later: Relax about the Sooners’ 2023 recruiting class

There was never a reason to worry about the Sooners’ 2023 recruiting class. Here’s where Oklahoma stands heading into August.

Thirty-one days ago an article was published on this website. It carried a very simple message: “Relax. The Sooners will be just fine for the 2023 recruiting cycle.”

When that article was published, the Sooners were 35th in 247Sports’ 2023 rankings. Today, they are seventh and have been as high as sixth.

Simply put, recruiting races aren’t finished in early July — not by a long shot. There’s so much talent in high school football that was and still is uncommitted going into this month. Since landing Samuel Omosigho, Brent Venables’ staff has been on an absolute tear.

The Sooners had nine commits coming into July. Heading into August, they have 18 with many more on the way after this weekend’s Party at the Palace.

The Sooners had 22 commits in the 2022 recruiting cycle. If all five “locks” commit. That’s 23 for 2023. This would not only be good for the highest ranked recruiting class in school history, but perhaps the best in the nation.

It would seem some were incorrect with their assessment of the status of OU’s recruiting.

The Sooners have pretty much solidified back-to-back top-10 recruiting classes with a very good chance to land in the top five for 2023.

Venables wanted to build a foundation? He’s done just that.

Oklahoma has a recruiting footprint across the nation with a noticable affinity for defensive linemen.

Here are the players committed to the Sooners in the 2023 class:

  • Jackson Arnold, 5-star QB
  • Adepoju Adebawore, 4-star Edge
  • Jaquaize Pettaway, 4-star WR
  • Cayden Green, 4-star OT
  • Derrick LeBlanc, 4-star DL
  • Samuel Omosigho, 4-star LB
  • Lewis Carter, 4-star LB
  • Jasiah Wagoner, 4-star CB
  • Daylan Smothers, 4-star RB
  • Kalib Hicks, 4-star RB
  • Keyon Brown, 3-star WR
  • Phil Picciotti, 3-star LB
  • Joshua Bates, 3-star IOL
  • Heath Ozeata, 3-star OT
  • Logan Howland, 3-star OT
  • Erik McCarty, 3-star ATH
  • Kaleb Spencer, 3-star LB
  • Kade McIntyre, 3-star ATH

Seems like a lot of kids want to play for OU.

Brent Venables recruiting philosophy is paying off for Oklahoma Sooners

In the midst of an incredible run on the recruiting trail in the 2023 cycle, it’s easy to see Brent Venables’ philosophy is paying off for the Okahoma Sooners.

If you haven’t seen it by now, the Oklahoma Sooners are red hot on the recruiting trail. It’s a far cry from the grave the national media and rival fans wanted to bury OU in during May.

Before June 1, the Sooners had four players committed to their 2023 recruiting class: [autotag]Joshua Bates[/autotag], [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag], [autotag]Erik McCarty[/autotag] and [autotag]Kaleb Spencer[/autotag]. On the surface, and according to some, the Sooners were struggling to recruit. Appearances can be deceiving.

The reality was that [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] and his coaching staff were playing the long game. Preaching patience to players who were interested in committing to Oklahoma and encouraging those prospects to finish their recruiting process before making a commitment.

The main message is, “know that you know that you know that you know.” Venables doesn’t want players making a commitment and then continuing to shop around. That’s what changed with [autotag]Ashton Cozart[/autotag] and that’s something [autotag]Lincoln Riley[/autotag] is dealing with now as [autotag]Malachi Nelson[/autotag], [autotag]Makai Lemon[/autotag] and [autotag]Zachariah Branch[/autotag] (their top three 2023 commits) are visiting [autotag]Texas A&M[/autotag] this weekend after being committed to the Trojans for some time. Nelson and Lemon have been committed since Riley left for USC in November.

If a player that’s committed to a school is going on visits to another, they’re not committed. Committed individuals don’t look elsewhere. In their career, in their marriage, in their relationships or in college football.

For years, the idea of a commitment has been softened in college football. By coaches and by players. Coaches will be committed to a player and a program one day and find a better opportunity the next. A player considered a “hard commit” by a recruiting service can flip at a moment’s notice. Throw in the new world order of name, image and likeness, and nothing seems certain until a player is signed.

That’s why Venables is so passionate about his philosophy. He wants players to take their visits. He wants them to explore all of their options before they commit. He wants the players that commit to the University of Oklahoma to understand the true meaning of the word. Because when a player commits, Oklahoma is committing in turn.

Venables, his coaching staff, and the program are throwing the full weight of the University of Oklahoma’s resources behind the prospect’s development both as a person and as a player. And all they’re asking for is the same commitment in return.

A player that commits to the University of Oklahoma has had a chance to go through their process, explore all of their options, and have time to consider them. They aren’t making an emotional decision based on their visit. They’re making an informed one — that will impact their college and professional careers.

And it’s a process that’s paying off for the Oklahoma Sooners. The 18 players (and counting) that have committed to the Sooners are all in. They’ve seen what’s out there, taken their visits and decided Oklahoma was the best place for them. It makes it more likely a player will stick and sign with the Sooners.

The process hasn’t hindered OU one bit. Their 18 commits (and counting) have Oklahoma up to No. 6 in the team recruiting rankings with a chance to climb even higher with several blue-chip prospects still to decide.

Oklahoma has added 14 players since June 1 and nine players since July 1, including eight four-stars since June 15.

In the last six days, the Sooners have received commitments from four-star prospects [autotag]Jasiah Wagoner[/autotag] and [autotag]Derrick LeBlanc[/autotag].

The Sooners’ patience on the recruiting trail is putting them in a position to have one of the best classes the school has seen in the modern era of recruiting.

And to echo the sentiment from several 2023 commits, they aren’t done yet.

After latest Top247 recruiting update, where does Oklahoma vs. the SEC in team recruiting rankings?

After the latest update to the Top247 from 247Sports, how do the Oklahoma Sooners compare in team recruiting rankings with the SEC?

In the latest Top247 update from 247Sports, several Oklahoma Sooners saw their stock rise, including quarterback Jackson Arnold receiving his fifth star and moving into the top 15 overall players for the class of 2022. Additionally, center Joshua Bates earned four-star status.

After the update, and with the commitment of linebacker Lewis Carter, the Oklahoma Sooners saw a slight bump to No. 9 overall in the 247Sports composite team recruiting rankings.

Given how this class will be the corp that leads the Oklahoma Sooners into the SEC, it’s prudent to follow how this recruiting class stacks up against their future opponents in the SEC.

Let’s take a look at how things stand as of July 22, a little over a month out from the start of the 2022 college football season.

Where do Oklahoma’s 2023 commits rank in latest 247Sports Top247 update?

Several commits from the Oklahoma Sooners 2023 recruiting class saw movement in the latest 247Sports rankings update.

The Oklahoma Sooners have been on a tear in the last two months, picking up 12 of their 16 commitments since June 1. Brent Venables and his coaching staff are putting together a tremendous group with more commits coming on the horizon.

Several Sooners in the 247Sports rankings saw some movement, including center [autotag]Joshua Bates[/autotag], who earned four-star status. While still considered a three-star talent in the 247Sports Composite, his move in the 247Sports rankings is a sign that he’s on an upward trajectory.

Another player receiving a bump in the rankings is quarterback [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag], who earned five-star status and is now inside the top 20 overall, according to 247Sports.

Seeing the biggest movement in the update was edge rusher [autotag]Adepoju Adebawore[/autotag], who jumped from No. 106 to No. 48 in the 247Sports rankings.

Let’s take a look at the Oklahoma commits who made a move in the latest Top247 Sports rankings.

Oklahoma Football cracks top 10 in 247Sports team recruiting rankings

The Oklahoma Sooners move inside the top 10 in 247Sports team recruiting rankings.

The month of July has been a good one so far for Brent Venables and the Oklahoma Football program. After being ranked as low as 38th in 247Sports’ 2023 team recruiting rankings, Oklahoma cracked the top ten with the commitment of Lewis Carter, ahead of Alabama and just behind Miami.

This is less than a year after Bob Stoops, Brent Venables, and the coaching staff brought OU’s 2022 recruiting class back from the depths all to way to eighth in the country. Venables and his staff have laid a very solid foundation for OU Football’s future in the meatgrinder that is the SEC.

Led by Denton Guyer’s Jackson Arnold, who just earned his fifth star from 247Sports, the Sooners have assembled a wide variety of talent with big names at runningback, wide receiver, linebacker and more.

The only Big 12 team ahead of OU in the rankings is fifth-ranked Texas. Also in the top 20 are Baylor and Texas Tech at 13th and 16th respectively.

Here’s the full top 25:

  1. Ohio State
  2. Notre Dame
  3. Penn State
  4. Clemson
  5. Texas
  6. Georgia
  7. Tennessee
  8. LSU
  9. Miami
  10. Oklahoma
  11. Alabama
  12. Arkansas
  13. Baylor
  14. Cincinnati
  15. Louisville
  16. Texas Tech
  17. USC
  18. Washington
  19. Northwestern
  20. Iowa
  21. Oregon
  22. Florida
  23. West Virginia
  24. North Carolina
  25. Michigan State

Of the nine teams that are ahead of OU in these rankings, three of them are in the SEC. OU being this high in the rankings at this stage is a very encouraging sign that the Sooners will be able to go toe-to-toe with SEC schools.

OU has 2023 commits from all over, including Texas, Florida, and Missouri. Getting recruits in SEC territory is vital for the onfield success of this program whenever the move to the SEC does happen.

Keep an eye on the recruiting rankings. As we’ve seen the last few weeks, they can change very quickly. It’s only July.
