Jack Del Rio ‘can’t wait to get started’ with Washington Redskins

Former potential Bengals DC target Jack Del Rio goes to Redskins

Jack Del Rio was connected to the Bengals before going to the Redskins this offseason.

Jack Del Rio will serve as the next defensive coordinator of the Washington Redskins.

But there was a time about an offseason ago it seemed like Del Rio might have a chance at joining Zac Taylor’s staff in a similar role for the Cincinnati Bengals.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport had first suggested the connection between Taylor and Del Rio. He later reported the two decided the fit wasn’t right.

This is an easy thing to forget in the grand scheme of things because Taylor went on to struggle in finding a coordintor for his defense until late in the process.

That cooridnator ended up being Lou Anarumo, whose defense struggled out of the gates before settling down and improving near the end of the season.

Anarumo presumably gets a Year 2 and will get to further inherit new talent for his defense this offseason while Del Rio will command a talented unit in Washington. It should be interesting to see how things shake out for both in the coming years.

Jack Del Rio will take Redskins back to 4-3 defense

Jack Del Rio has big plans for the Redskins.

Jack Del Rio is in the building and so is the 4-3 for the Washington Redskins.

The Redskins haven’t run anything but the 3-4 since 2010 but that’s going to change under the guidance of Del Rio, something he confirmed with Les Carpenter of the Washington Post.

What that will exactly look like is hard to say but the Redskins have all offseason to shift around personnel and make additions and subtractions.

One thing’s for sure — the thought of Del Rio going wild with a Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne in the heart of the defensive line is fun no matter the alignment.

And in today’s NFL the concept of a base defense is fading as is. But it doesn’t hurt to know right out the gates what the respected coordinator plans on running in Washington.

Crazy coincidence spells major success for DC Jack Del Rio and Redskins

Twice so far, Del Rio has coached a generation pass-rusher who was picked No. 2 overall, and he has another chance with Chase Young.

A new decade brings new excitement for the Washington Redskins, and the official hiring of both Ron Rivera and Jack Del Rio on Wednesday morning helped ring in 2020 for Washington fans across the county.

While many who follow the team are just happy to have the old regime on its way out, there are some things popping up about the new staff that is cause for celebration as well. With Del Rio, who is the newest defensive coordinator in Washington, it’s his history of excelling with a dynamic pass-rusher that is truly encouraging.

Back in 2002, when Del Rio was hired as the DC for the Carolina Panthers, future All-Pro defensive end Julius Peppers was drafted by the team with the No. 2 overall pick. The defense excelled under Del Rio’s coaching, finishing the year in the top 5 for points allowed and yards per game. Peppers went on to be a nine-time Pro Bowler in Carolina.

Fast forward 10 years to when Del Rio was hired as the DC for the Denver Broncos in 2012, and you’ll find more success with a dynamic pass-rusher  — this time Von Miller, who was drafted with the No. 2 pick in 2011. Once again, the Broncos finished the year in the top 5 for both points allowed and yards per game. Miller is still playing in Denver, where he’s been named a Super Bowl MVP and an eight-time Pro-Bowler.

Fast forward to this year, where Del Rio has been named the DC for the Redskins. This is where the coincidence really comes in. The Redskins have the No. 2 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, where they are expected to take…you guessed it, a generational pass-rusher in Chase Young. Does that mean that Washington’s defense will finish in the top 5 in points allowed and yards per game? Well, according to the trends…

Of course, it’s too early to dub Chase Young a future Super Bowl MVP, or a multi-time Pro-Bowler, but this trend of success under Del Rio at least has to be noted. The future is bright for the Redskins, and based on years past, history could repeat itself for Del Rio in Washington.

Many Redskins’ coaches unsure of future with the team going forward

While a new regime is getting started in Washington, many of the old coaches are unsure of whether or not they will have a job going forward

Things are happening quickly for the Washington Redskins, but it may not be quick enough for a few people within the building.

As Ron Rivera kicks off 2020 in Washington at the head of a new regime with a fresh spring of hope in the fanbase, there are a number of coaches with the Redskins who don’t yet know their fate. While Jack Del Rio has been brought in as the defensive coordinator, and Kevin O’Connell is likely to be retained at OC, the same can’t be said about a number of other decision-makers in the building.

On Wednesday afternoon it was reported by ESPN’s John Keim that former interim head coach Bill Callahan would be let go by the Redskins, and a number of other coaches are likely to see the same fate. However, many of those coaches are unaware if it will be them or not.

An introductory press conference for Ron Rivera will be held at 2 p.m. ET on Thursday, January 2nd. With the new head coach facing the media for the first time in Washington, it would not be a shock to hear of some more coaching changes before then, so Rivera doesn’t have to break news while on the podium. Stay tuned for more information.

Jack Del Rio officially named defensive coordinator; Kevin O’Connell to interview for OC

Ron Rivera is starting to fill out his coaching staff with the Redskins, and it will trickle on down the line over the next several days.

Ron Rivera was officially announced as the next head coach for the Washington Redskins on Wednesday morning, helping Redskins fans to ring in the new year on a positive note.

Now it appears that Rivera is starting to fill out his coaching room, and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport says that former Oakland Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio will be coming to Washington as the defensive coordinator. Del Rio has had a highly successful career as a defensive coach in his 20-plus years on the sidelines.

Rapoport also reports that Rivera will interview current offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell to stay on at the current position. This is a huge deal, because KOC has started to blossom as a young offensive coach, and the implementation of his scheme throughout 2019 showed a lot of promise for a young and talented offense.

With the two coordinator positions set — should O’Connell remain at OC — look for Rivera to start filling out the rest of the ranks over the next few days.

Redskins targeting Jack Del Rio as their next defensive coordinator

Jack Del Rio seems to be the top candidate for the Redskins as they look to fill out their defensive coordinator position under Ron Rivera.

The Washington Redskins are expected to target former Oakland Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio as their defensive coordinator going forward, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

It was reported early on Tuesday morning by ESPN’s John Keim that Steve Wilks, who many expected to follow new Redskins head coach Ron Rivera to Washington to become the defensive coordinator, was not expected to make the trip. Soon thereafter, Schefter reported that Del Rio was the top target for the Redskins, and he’s likely to take the job.

Del Rio and Rivera will be tasked with overhauling the Redskins defense and implementing a 4-3 scheme that hasn’t been used in Washington in the past decade. Del Rio’s success in Carolina and Denver makes him a great choice for the Redskins, and one that would surely bolster their prospects on that side of the ball.

Former Jags HC Jack Del Rio believes Jags have issues, but Nick Foles isn’t amongst them

Former Jags coach Jack Del Rio believes the Jags are flawed but Nick Foles isn’t the reasoning behind their issues.

While Jack Del Rio is no longer a head coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars, he does occasionally speak on the team as an analyst for ESPN. With the team entering the most critical stage of their season after losing handily to the Indianapolis Colts, Del Rio discussed the Jags’ flaws this week but said he felt that veteran quarterback Nick Foles wasn’t one of them.

In Week 11’s game against the Indianapolis Colts, Foles came out strong in the first quarter but he wasn’t overly impressive past that point. However, the Jags’ run defense looked significantly worse than he did, giving up 264 rushing yards.

Heading forward, the team as a whole will need to play better and that includes Foles, who made some throws in double coverage and had a very questionable pick in which he threw off his back foot. It’s worth noting he missed eight games prior due to breaking his collarbone so his struggles are more excusable than those of the defensive unit. However, if his play doesn’t gradually improve over time, fans will begin to start calling for Gardner Minshew II to become the starter again as the experience would benefit him more, as some view him as the Jags’ quarterback of the future.
