Jack Del Rio officially named defensive coordinator; Kevin O’Connell to interview for OC

Ron Rivera is starting to fill out his coaching staff with the Redskins, and it will trickle on down the line over the next several days.

Ron Rivera was officially announced as the next head coach for the Washington Redskins on Wednesday morning, helping Redskins fans to ring in the new year on a positive note.

Now it appears that Rivera is starting to fill out his coaching room, and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport says that former Oakland Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio will be coming to Washington as the defensive coordinator. Del Rio has had a highly successful career as a defensive coach in his 20-plus years on the sidelines.

Rapoport also reports that Rivera will interview current offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell to stay on at the current position. This is a huge deal, because KOC has started to blossom as a young offensive coach, and the implementation of his scheme throughout 2019 showed a lot of promise for a young and talented offense.

With the two coordinator positions set — should O’Connell remain at OC — look for Rivera to start filling out the rest of the ranks over the next few days.
