Aggies HC Buzz Williams speaks ahead of Texas A&M vs. Vanderbilt

Here’s what Texas A&M Head Coach Buzz Williams had to say ahead of the game against Vanderbilt

Texas A&M (15-8, 6-4 SEC) will return on the road to face Vanderbilt (6-17, 1-9 SEC) on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. CT.

The Aggies are on a roll right now and are one of the hottest teams in the SEC. They are playing good team ball right now and Buzz Williams has been able to coach to his full potential the past few weeks due to his players ironing out the kinks. They finally look like a top team in the country, as everyone expected them to be when the season started.

After convincingly handling the Volunteers, some might tend to look past a struggling Vanderbilt team; however, Buzz is not built like that, and he won’t let his squad think like that, either.

“They have the most dense playbook in division one history….”Coach Stackhouse’s offensive skill, how he utilizes all 12 players will play, he will mix and match the groups you can tell he watches an enormous amount of film because he attacks what he believes your weak spot is and or your defensive philosophy. I enjoy watching them, but I don’t enjoy playing against them because their playbook is so dense”

Post Game Recap: Texas A&M destroys Missouri behind Tyrece Radford’s 22 points

Behind Tyrece Radford’s game high 22 points coupled with Andersson Garcia’s 16 rebounds, Texas A&M defeated Missouri on the road. 79-60

Texas A&M’s (14-8, 5-4 SEC) strong second-half run was more than enough to sweep the season series vs the hapless Missouri Tigers (8-15, 0-10 SEC) 79-60 on Wednesday night behind an even scoring effort and tremendous defense.

Sitting with an average record of 4-4 in SEC play, the Aggies made their way to Columbia to face the Missouri Tigers on Wednesday night, who have yet to earn a conference win in nine attempts this season. However, playing on the road in any SEC environment is never easy.

Look to start out hot and establish early momentum; A&M played as energized as ever behind an efficient offensive attack while shooting 43% from the field, coupled with their usual rebounding dominance (23-14 rebound advantage) in the first half. However, the Aggies’ tempo led to an impressive 16-0 run to finish the half, holding the Tigers’ with a nearly eight-minute scoring drought on the defensive end.

Attacking the paint at will, veteran guard Tyrece Radford, who was coming off his 26-point performance in last Saturday’s win vs. Florida, led the team with 10 first-half points. In comparison, senior forward Andersson Garcia’s All-SEC-like performance was the most impactful, netting 5 points and 11(!) rebounds, coupled with forward Henry Coleman’s efficient 8 points and 4 boards. Star point guard Wade Taylor IV was relatively quiet, recording six points and three assists on 2-6 shooting. Texas A&M led 38-25 at halftime.

Second Half:

With a double-digit lead providing a slight cushion, Missouri began to battle back, going on their own 7-2 run to open the half, while the Aggies started off sloppy, as the Tigers changed things up defensively in the paint. The Aggie’s offensive game plan changed as the lead dwindled: get fouled and make your free throws.

After Henry Coleman left the game due to an apparent midsection injury, Tyrece Radford took control. He drove to his left for a basket or got to the free throw line, scoring seven of A&M’s nine points to take a 56-45 lead with under ten minutes remaining. Under the radar, transfer guard Jace Carter was highly efficient, shooting 50% from the floor, including 2-4 from beyond the arc.

Getting everyone involved, the Aggie’s performance free throw line (15-19) paired with Wade Taylor’s late offensive output sealed the game, as the lead ballooned to 75-56 with more than a minute left. Shooting an SEC season-high 47.6% on the night after getting back in rhythm late, the storyline was still Andersson Garcia’s consistent toughness in nearly every metric, while the Aggies are now 11-1 this season in games where Tyrece Radford scores 20 points or more, scoring a game-high 22 points on the night.

No matter Missouri’s record, this was a significant road win for the Maroon & White, who are now tied for sixth with Florida in the SEC standings.

Note: Henry Coleman III left the game due to an apparent midsection injury

Below are the Aggies critical contributors from the game:

Wade Taylor IV:  18 points / 5 rebounds / 3 assists

Tyrece Radford:  22 points / 4 rebounds

Five things Texas A&M needs to accomplish to rebound from it’s midseason slump

Amid the rare bye week, Texas A&M and head coach Buzz Williams have plenty of issues to fix before facing the Florida Gators on Saturday.

Texas A&M (12-8, 3-4 SEC) has failed to live up to the towering preseason expectations bestowed upon them, including a No. 15 AP ranking due to the projected four returning starters, including senior forward Julius Marble, who, due what has been called a “University process” has yet to play in a single game this season.

Since entering conference play last month, the Aggies failed to add to their two-game win streak, falling to the red-hot Ole Miss Rebels 71-68 last Saturday after leading by as much as seven points with just two minutes remaining in the second half. This week, ESPN’s Joe Lunardi placed the Aggies on the bubble for the first time this season, sending a direct message to head coach Buzz Williams from an urgency standpoint.

Regression-wise, Texas A&M has shot an anemic 39% from the field, ranking 343rd nationally and 344th in 3-point field goal percentage at 26.7%. Credit to GigEm247’s Carter Karels for his deep dive into A&M’s statistical struggles, specifically noting senior guard Tyrece Radford’s lack of consistency in the Aggies’ losses when he plays, averaging an abysmal 26% from the field and 15%(!) from 3-point range.

As the No. 1-ranked offensive rebounding team in the nation, an abundance of second chance opportunities have been gifted, but the execution has remained inept.

To aid star point Wade Taylor IV, who is averaging a heroic 28 points in his last five contests, changes need to be made; as impossible as that sounds, he is already 20 games in. Here are five ways head coach Buzz Williams can help the Texas A&M rebound in the second half of the 2023-2024 season.

Head Texas A&M basketball Coach Buzz Williams will get enjoy the New Year after beating sister school Prairie View A&M and closing out the year on a two-game winning streak.

After an up-and-down start to the year, the Aggies are in a much better position at his time than last year, thanks to Buzz scheduling a tougher non-conference schedule. They will enter SEC play with three Quad 1 wins, so if they handle business when March rolls around, we should expect a better seed than last season.

NOTE: Tyrece Radford was back in the lineup after missing multiple games.

Texas A&M will get a break before SEC play on January 6th, where they will host LSU inside Reed Arena at 7:30 p.m. CT. The game will air on the SEC Network.

‘We can go as far as we want to.’ Everything Carter & Coleman had to say after win over the Panthers

Here’s what Jace Carter and Henry Coleman had to say in the post-game presser after a 79-54 victory over the Panthers

Texas A&M (9-4) hosted the Prairie View A&M Panthers (5-8) on Saturday night at Reed Arena and came out with a decisive win to end non-conference play on a two-game winning streak, while earning three Quad 1 victories before the SEC slate begins.

Non-conference play is over, and Jace Carter talked about preparing while heading into SEC play.

“Staying present, focusing on us and not looking too far ahead and really being where our feet are. That’s something Buzz preaches a lot and I think if we just follow him and be the same person everyday it will get us a long way. We can go as far as we want to.

‘I think the key will be not forgetting those lessons and execute them over the next 10 weeks’ Everything Buzz Williams had to say after win over the Panthers

Here’s what Texas A&M Head Coach Buzz Williams had to say in the post-game presser

Texas A&M (9-4) hosted the Prairie View A&M Panthers (5-8) on Saturday night at Reed Arena and came out with a decisive win to end non-conference play on a two-game winning streak, while earning three Quad 1 victories before the SEC slate begins.

Non-conference play is over, and Coach Buzz gave a little insight into what his team learned before heading into SEC play.

“It’s been a lot over the last eight weeks; it feels like a season in itself, to be honest. I think a lot of the lessons that we’ve learned will apply over the next 10 weeks of conference play. I think the key will be not forgetting those lessons and execute them over the next 10 weeks. I think that will depend upon the maturity of our group, and we have a mature group of really good people.”

Post Game Recap: Texas A&M wins second straight with 79-54 victory over Prairie View A&M

Henry Coleman and Andersson Garcia combine for 31 points and 25 rebounds as the power past the Panthers

Texas A&M (9-4) hosted the Prairie View A&M Panthers (5-8) on Saturday night at Reed Arena and came out with a decisive win to end non-conference play on a two-game winning streak, while earning three Quad 1 victories before the SEC slate begins.

This game was never close as Texas A&M opened the game on a 13-0 and led by double digits essentially the entire contest. The Aggies didn’t go too deep into their bench. As a result, they had four starters reach double digits, with Henry Coleman and Andersson Garcia recording double-doubles. For Coleman, his 20 points and 13 rebounds gave him his fifth double-double on the season, and Garcia’s 11 points and 12 rebounds was a career milestone as his first collegiate double-double.

If there is one thing the Aggies need to improve on as they move into SEC play, it’s their three-point shooting. They were an abysmal 3-24 from beyond the arc and are now at a season average of .274, while their opponents are at .350. Going forward, something needs to happen on the defensive end, or they need to put up a thousand extra shots during the break to close that gap.

However, to close out on a positive note, the Maroon & White did not forget how to rebound as they came into the game as the nation’s leader in offensive rebounds and solidified that spot again tonight, snatching a season-high 29 offensive boards in route to their 79-54 victory.

NOTE: Tyrece Radford returned to the lineup and missing multiple games

Below are the Aggie critical contributors from the game:

Henry Coleman:  20 points / 13 rebounds

Andersson Garcia:  11 points / 12 rebounds

Tyrece Radford:  11 points / 7 rebounds

Texas A&M will host Prairie View A&M in the Aggies’ final non-conference game

On Saturday night, the Aggie Basketball team will host the Prairie View A&M Panthers at Reed Arena.

Texas A&M (8-4) will face its sister school, Prairie View A&M (5-7), at Reed Arena on Friday at 6 PM CST.

The non-conference schedule is coming to an end and the Aggies will have a chance to go into the new year on a two-game winning streak before SEC play starts. It’s been a mixed bag to start the season, with a lot of inconsistency on the offensive side of the ball. With Tyrece Radford missing most of the games with a breathing issue and Julius Marble yet to set foot on the court due to a “University issue,” coach Buzz Williams had the trying task of finding a clutch lineup.

Wade Taylor IV has seen an uptick in pressure as teams now key in on him early in possessions, forcing him to get rid of the ball early or forcing him into turnovers. However, he still scored over 30 points twice, and when he gets going, he is easily the best player on the court.

In the 14 matchups between the two teams, the Aggies have won every single one. Throughout the history of the series, Texas A&M never had too much trouble outside of an 83-78 Aggie win back in the 2002-2003 season. The most recent game was a 20-point win on this same day one year ago.

PLAYERS to watch:

Wade Taylor IV – 17.9 PTS / 4.6 AST / 2.1 STL

Henry Coleman – 12.2 PTS / 8.7 TOT

Everything Buzz Williams, Hayden Hefner and Andersson Garcia had to say after the victory over HCU

Here’s everything Coach Buzz Williams, Hayden Hefner, and Andersson Garica had to say after Friday night’s win over HCU.

With Tyrece Radford out and Wade Taylor having an off-night, Texas A&M needed someone to step up. Hayden Hefner and Andersson Garica answered that call and, in a big way, en route to a 79-52 win over the HCU Huskies.

Hefner was the only Aggie that could score consistently from anywhere on the court and lit up the Huskies for a career-high 24 points. Then, Garcia did what he does best, grabbing every rebound in sight. Coach Buzz Williams made it a point to mention it during his time in the post-game presser.

“It was (Andersson Garcia’s) first college start. I think he’s Dennis Rodman from Columbia. He’s unbelievable. He impacts the game without the ball more than any player I’ve coached.”

After losing back-to-back games and then playing a 2-8 Huskie team, things can sometimes go awry, and focus can be lost. However, Buzz will always make sure to keep his team in the moment and preach that every game matters.

“We always preach trying to be mature and focus on the next thing in front of you. Do your job and try to help somebody else do their job. It’s just second nature.”

This was a good bounce back to get back in the win column with one non-conference game remaining before SEC play starts while ensuring that the Christmas break would begin on a high note. Below, you can watch the Post-game pressers with Coach Buzz, Hefner, and Garcia.

Texas A&M will return home for a game against Prairie View A&M on Dec.30 at 7:00 PM CST.

Post Game Recap: Texas A&M gets back in the win column with a 79-52 victory over HCU

Hayden Hefner hits a career high as he leads the Aggies past the HCU Huskies in a lopsided victory

Texas A&M (8-3) hosted the HCU Huskies (2-9) on Friday night at Reed Arena and came out with a decisive win to end their two-game skid.

Both teams had a hard time at the beginning of the game making a bucket not allowing any squad to take a dominant lead. Then, finally, after about 10 minutes in, the Aggies ratcheted up the defense, and Hayden Hefner knocked down seven straight points for a double-digit lead at 19-9.

Right when it looked as if A&M was going to blow the game wide open, HCU had some timely buckets as the Aggie committed a few senseless turnovers. The shooting woes continued for the Maroon & White, but they were able to slash to the basket late in the half for some shots from the charity stripe going 15-20.

The star of the opening 20 minutes was Hefner, who led the team with 13 points, and some smothering defense allowed them to go on an 18-3 run while Wade Taylor IV spent most of the half on the bench. The Aggies held HCU to under 27% shooting, taking a 40-21 lead into the locker room.

Erik Williams-USA TODAY Sports

The second half started with more of the same, with Hefner hitting a few early shots and Andersson Garcia being a monster on the glass, giving the Aggies multiple second-chance points.

Garcia and Hefner guided A&M to an easy victory as both Aggies hit career numbers. Even though they shot poorly, their ability to get to the free-throw line and their signature rebounding really helped extend the lead to 20+. The reserves started to shuffle in and out during the remaining five minutes as they spent some clock working on some offensive sets.

The only thing that didn’t slow down was the defense of A&M as the Huskies were limited to 33% shooting and grabbed a massive 22 offensive rebounds. Hefner led all scorers with a career-high 24 points on very efficient shooting, while Garcia barely missed out on a double-double and logged 9 points and 19 rebounds. Taylor had a quiet 10 points, but Buzz Williams opted to rest him most of the game.

With the win, A&M snapped a two-game winning streak and got numerous bench players in the game during the 79-62 victory over the HCU Huskies.

Below are the Aggie critical contributors from the game:

Hayden Hefner:  24 points (career-high)

Andersson Garcia:  9 points / 19 rebounds (career-high)

Jace Carter:  10 points / 12 rebounds

NOTE: Tyrece Radford did not suit up for the game
