Consider Daniel Cormier all in on the UFC booking a superfight between Jon Jones and Israel Adesanya.
ABU DHABI – [autotag]Daniel Cormier[/autotag] is all in on the UFC booking a superfight between [autotag]Jon Jones[/autotag] and [autotag]Israel Adesanya[/autotag].
Cormier, a former two-division UFC champion who retired earlier this year and has settled into a commentating role, is as captivated by the frequently budding feud between his ex-rival Jones (26-1 MMA, 20-1 UFC) and undefeated middleweight champ Adesanya (20-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC).
Following Adesanya’s successful title defense against Paulo Costa last month at UFC 253, the war of words with former light heavyweight champ Jones has kicked into overdrive. The pair have gotten deeply personal, bringing past fight results, steroid accusations, deceased family members, and more into the equation.
The latest chapter in the feud saw Adesanya lure Jones into publicly admitting to a long-rumored story about hiding under the cage at Jackson Wink MMA to avoid a drug test. There’s likely more coming in the future, too, and all of it has Cormier itching to see them step in the octagon.
“Adesanya’s one of those internet kids,” Cormier told reporters, including MMA Junkie, on Tuesday. “Internet kids don’t even need to verify if something’s true. They use it. There’s a rumor, they use it, which is actually quite astounding, because there was a rumor that Jones hid under that cage for years. Adesanya somehow got him to admit to doing it. He actually got him to admit to doing it. So there’s obviously a method to his madness.
“When this started and he kept going after Jones I was like, ‘I can’t imagine how many plates or coffee mugs Jones broke in his house that night because he’s so mad.’ Then he got him to admit that? It was nuts. Jones has had some good comebacks, too. It’s been good.”

One of the main narratives in the Jones-Adesanya feud has been discussion of when the fight will happen. Jones is encouraging “The Last Stylebender” to step into the octagon with him immediately, but Adesanya has been consistent for more than a year in saying it won’t happen until July 2021. He recently told MMA Junkie that, when it does materialize, it will be the “biggest fight in UFC history.”
Cormier said he enjoys that Adesanya is sticking to his guns and overall believes it plays in his favor to wait. The fight-over-fight improvement from Adesanya has been noticeable, and if that trend continues, it’s only going to make the fight tough for Jones. And for that reason, Cormier sees why Jones would want it now.
“If you’re Israel Adesanya you just don’t fight him, because you know how mad he is,” Cormier said. “Could you imagine making this man as mad as you’re making him and still not fighting him? Because it doesn’t seem Izzy’s ready to fight him right now, but I think it would be a fantastic fight. Jones wants to fight him. Jones is a fighter, man. He’ll fight anybody. He’ll fight Adesanya, but Izzy won’t even fight him, which is just like picking at somebody constantly but at a distance. I’m not saying Adesanya’s scared, but Adesanya says, ‘I need my time. You said you’re going to heavyweight 10 years ago; you’re finally doing it now. Why can’t I have time?’ It’s very fascinating watching these two interact with each other. It’s nasty. But these rivalries tend to get nasty. Jones and I was not nice. They tend to get nasty. It’s fun for fans.
“I hope they fight at some point. I think it’s a very interesting matchup. Adesanya’s improving. If I’m Jones I fight him sooner than later if I can get him in there, because the longer – remember, this guy’s only been here for a couple years. Now he looks like he’s going to hold the belt forever.”

Another question about bringing Jones vs. Adesanya to reality would be settling on a weight class. Adesanya has only fought at middleweight in the UFC, while Jones’ career has taken place entirely at light heavyweight. “Bones” recently vacated the 205-pound title, though, and announced he would be making his long-discussed move up to heavyweight.
If Jones commits himself entirely to heavyweight, that could create problems in determining a fight weight. Adesanya has said he would jump up to the UFC’s biggest division if needed, but even Cormier admits he’s not quite sure how that aspect would be sorted out.
“Here’s the dilemma with the fight: What weight are they going to fight at?” Cormier said. “Because Jones is going up. Is he going to get back down to 205 pounds? That’s championship weight. That’s not easy for him. It’s never easy for any of us. Making 205 is awful. It was awful. It’s hard for Jones, too. He’s a big guy. So for Adesanya to come up and just think that dude is going to deplete himself all the way back down to the championship weight, that’s probably not what he would want to do. But if Adesanya can (move up and) get past (Jan) Blachowicz, and now he’s holding that title? Now it might be a bit more intriguing for Jones to go back down there. I don’t really care about the weight. Adesanya’s a big guy. He could go 215 and give Jones a few pounds.”

[autotag]Israel Adesanya[/autotag] doesn’t see [autotag]Chris Weidman[/autotag] posing much of a challenge to him.
After UFC middleweight champion Adesanya (20-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) recently dusted Paulo Costa in the second round at UFC 253, former UFC middleweight champion Weidman called him out.
The two went back-and-forth on social media, but speaking to MMA Junkie, Adesanya addressed how he sees a potential matchup between him and Weidman (15-5 MMA, 11-5 UFC) playing out.
“It was a bit weird for me, but I already have him figured out,” Adesanya told MMA Junkie. “I have it figured out right down to how I’m going to take him out. Let him bring his double leg, let him bring his single leg, let him try and force me to the fence. He’s not going to strike with me. Come strike with me – one thing that he has going good for him is, one thing he said before he knocked out Anderson Silva, at the weigh-ins, he looked at him dead in the eyes and said, ‘I’m not scared of you. I’m not scared of you.’ He said that over and over to him; I remember that.”
[lawrence-related id=557888,557273,557144]
Adesanya recounted running into Weidman years ago, where the two had a drunken, but cordial, exchange. Known to keep mental receipts of all his encounters, Adesanya recalls telling Weidman, who was champion at the time, that he’d see him soon.
But a lot has changed since then, with Weidman losing five of his past seven and Adesanya skyrocketing to stardom by capturing the title and defending it twice.
Considering where both men currently stand in their careers, Adesanya doesn’t think a fight between them makes sense right now and sees himself taking out the former champion with relative ease.
Although Weidman recently snapped a two-fight losing skid with a unanimous decision win over Omari Akhmedov at UFC on ESPN+ 32 in August, Adesanya still thinks he has some work to do before the two could meet.
“I told him, ‘I look forward to fighting you one day,’ because I actually thought he would be at the top for a while, but he unfortunately hasn’t been doing well lately,” Adesanya said. “Not that he can’t come back. Look at Jan Blachowicz; he came back and now he’s the champion. But yeah, I’m just saying, I’ve studied these mother(expletives), they think this is a (expletive) game.
“Weidman is already done. That fight will end in the first round if it happens, but you’ve got to get some wins first, bro. A few wins first, yeah.”

UFC champ Israel Adesanya has no regrets about his Twitter war with Jon Jones, and implied it might get more intense going forward.
[autotag]Israel Adesanya[/autotag] has no regrets about the personal nature of his Twitter war with [autotag]Jon Jones[/autotag], and implied things might get even more intense going forward.
Following his successful middleweight title defense against Paulo Costa at UFC 253, Adesanya (20-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) has engaged in a social media back-and-forth with Jones (26-1 MMA, 20-1 UFC) that included some dark moments.
Jones posted images and video of Adesanya’s lone knockout loss of his kickboxing career and made mention of his father. Adesanya replied by rehashing video of Jones’ multiple encounters with law enforcement over the years, as well as telling the former lightweight heavyweight champ his deceased mother “would be disappointed” in the man he’s become.
Although Adesanya has taken some heat for what certain people would deem as crossing the line, he said he doesn’t take back any of it.
“Don’t mention my father,” Adesanya told MMA Junkie on Wednesday. “I don’t give a (expletive) if your mom’s dead. I’m sure she was a beautiful woman, a beautiful soul, but I don’t give a (expletive) if she’s dead. Don’t mention my dad. Do not mention my family. This is business, this is work. Yeah, sure, mention my coach. Cool. But don’t mention anything personal. You think you can get down and dirty? Mother(expletive) I’m from the gutter. I can get grimy. You don’t understand Nigerians. Trust me, you don’t want this war.
“If you want to go down back-and-forth dirty, bro. You don’t even know the gutter, from your little posh, suburban spot in New Mexico. You don’t know, bro. Trust me. He wants to get down and dirty and start mentioning family members? And people will say, ‘You should’ve mentioned his dad instead.’ It’s not up to you to decide what I do. You mentioned my family. It’s open season. You’re lucky I didn’t come for other members of your family.”
The in-depth nature of the online battle between Adesanya and Jones has led many fans, and “Bones” himself, to push for the fight right now. On multiple occasions, Jones has said bluntly that he doesn’t think Adesanya has any intention of fighting him, and will avoid making it happen at all costs.
Adesanya has explained he’s not going to be rushed to do anything and will do it on his timeline – July 2021. Moreover, he doesn’t see himself as the one putting more fuel on the fire. Adesanya said he’s following his own career trajectory, and Jones is the one consistently trying to intercept.
“He likes to say I talk about him but again, I never talk about him unless I’m actually asked about him,” Adesanya said. “Did you just ask me about him? Correct. Who asked me about him when I’m fighting? No one. When he fought (Dominick Reyes), did you see me tweet anything about him? Exactly. I don’t talk about him unless I’m asked about him. But he talks about me all the time because he’s (expletive) jealous. He’s scared. He knows what the (expletive) is happening because he’s been in this position before and he understands the power of momentum. It’s really hard to stop an avalanche once it gets going. With a win like I just had? Oh, boy. He knows what the (expletive) is happening. He knows. That’s why they tried to get me three fights ago, because they know exponentially I’m getting better every fight, after every fight.
“My last flawless victory let them know like, ‘(Expletive), we better get him now.’ He’s trying to push for that fight. But like his teammate (Holly Holm) said, ‘I’m writing my own story and I’ll never let anyone write my own story,’ or something to that nature. That’s me. I’ve been saying. You can’t force my hand. You can’t Canelo (Alvarez) me. You can’t force my hand. I’ve already told when I’m going to whip your ass. Pick a number and get in line. Just don’t snort the line. Relax, Jonny Boy.”
Jones’ prodding at Adesanya has included invitations to “sign the dotted line” for a fight between them. Adesanya said that’s fantasy, and explicitly noted he’s never once been approached or presented a contract from the UFC for a fight against Jones, including after UFC president Dana White called it the “fight to make.”
“Where’s the contract?” Adesanya said. “I’ve never been offered this fight, so it’s like where’s this contract that everyone likes to bring up? Paulo said the same thing, ‘Sign the contract.’ What contract mother(expletive)? I just whipped your ass, bad. Double-tap. Easy. Everyone is saying, ‘Sign the contract. Sign the contract.’ I don’t think these people know how contracts work. You have to get a contract before you sign. But yeah, cheddar makes it better. That’s a big fight.”
[lawrence-related id=557273,556576,557144,557102]
Adesanya said he’s happy to keep following his path and knows the Jones fight will be there when he wants it. He doesn’t think Jones is actually going to move up to the heavyweight division, and Adesanya’s predicted timeline for the matchup at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas is only 10 months away.
There’s no doubt in Adesanya’s mind he will step in the cage with Jones, though, bringing a long line of negativity toward each other to a head. Adesanya said he will be at his peak when it happens, and given everything that’s gone on between them, is confident it will be a monumental moment in the history of MMA.
“That’s the biggest fight in UFC history,” Adesanya said. “I’ve set the date. I’ve set it a long time ago. … I’ve said it on many, many platforms. And it’s going to happen. But they’re trying to force it. They tried to get me three fights ago. They’re trying to force my hand because they don’t understand the power of momentum. I’m telling you, man, I can’t be stopped right now. Don’t get me wrong. It’s me. I can stop myself. But the momentum I have right now, I can’t be stopped. It’s a force you can’t (expletive) with.”

The war of words between “Bones” and “The Last Style Bender” reminds the hottest feud in all of MMA.
The hottest feud in the UFC continues to be the one between a pair of competitors on opposite ends of the planet who fight in different weight classes.
UFC middleweight champion [autotag]Israel Adesanya[/autotag] and former light heavyweight champion [autotag]Jon Jones[/autotag] continued their war of words Monday, as their trash talk show no signs of slowing down.
Jones made the first move this time, saying Adesanya keeps talking about him but doesn’t want to fight:
Fighter and coach is mentioning my name in interviews but refused to sign the dotted line. Straight hoe shit. Mention a mans dead mother over the Internet but looking to fight Jared cannoneer 😩
— BONY (@JonnyBones) October 5, 2020
He then retweeted more than a dozen replies from fans, waiting for Adesanya, who apparently didn’t spend his entire day refreshing Twitter. “The Last Style Bender” finally replied about two and a half hours later:
Let’s see him actually stop ducking the heavyweights.
I’ve set my plan in this game from the jump.
No man ever forced my hand.— Israel Adesanya (@stylebender) October 5, 2020
And it was on. Adesanya referenced Jones’ criminal record. Jones continued insisting Adesanya wants to duck him, while also making a curious tweet implying his current agency is not world class.
Lol If I wanted more attention, I would sign with a world-class talent agency. Maybe buy a few Ferraris and move to Miami. You’re sadly mistaken https://t.co/vvIqsSFWxm
— BONY (@JonnyBones) October 5, 2020
Either way, they were off to the races. here are the highlights of Monday’s round of Twitter sparring:
Costa lost the fight the day he signed the contract to fight for the championship. His new fane defeated him before the fight even started. Kid just stood there in front of a kickboxer and showboated for the cameras. Don’t compare me to someone who’s proven nothing https://t.co/jpafKf4D4a

I’ve been famous since I was 21, who gives a shit about being hot. Do you know how many hot people I’ve seen come around since I’ve been here, many. McGregor is the only fighter who inspires me on a business level everyone else I just respect as an athlete https://t.co/r89enRnCY0

What do you do when Jon Jones murders you with facts, tell a cocaine joke. Maybe it’ll distract the fans from thinking about what was actually said.
— BONY (@JonnyBones) October 5, 2020
Do you dummies even know how contracts work?
Some of y’all never even seen one.
“SiGn dA CoNtRaKT!”— Israel Adesanya (@stylebender) October 5, 2020
Fuck records.
You should know.
How many criminal records you got
You’ve lost your belts how many times?

Lol Exactly what does this have to do with us fighting? More distractions from the actual conversation https://t.co/TZejakVH01

Lol…been cock teasing heavyweight move for 7 years.
He’ll never do it. He can just wait in line like the rest of them. https://t.co/PYz8ye2uwN— Israel Adesanya (@stylebender) October 6, 2020
