Ismael Bonfim delivered a highlight for the ages in his octagon debut, and he wants to produce something even better at UFC on ESPN 47.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Ismael Bonfim[/autotag] delivered a highlight for the ages in his octagon debut in January, and he wants to produce something even better at UFC on ESPN 47.

Bonfim (19-3 MMA, 1-0 UFC) stopped Terrance McKinney in spectacular fashion at UFC 283, which was deemed MMA Junkie’s Knockout of the Month. Now he moves on to his sophomore promotional appearance against Benoit Saint-Denis (10-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC), which takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex and airs on ESPN/streams on ESPN+.

The lightweight bout has potential for serious fireworks, and Bonfim knows the world expects him to produce a strong encore from his first appearance in a UFC cage.

“There’s a bit of a pressure because more people see that, they expect you to do that and better,” Bonfim told MMA Junkie and other reporters through an interpreter at Wednesday’s UFC on ESPN 47 media day. “The pressure’s on me to go back and there and go inside and do it even better.”

Bonfim said he expects a “tough fight” against Saint-Denis, but his end goal will be the same as always: Put his opponent away inside the distance.

If Bonfim could do that, he said he anticipates bigger and better matchups going forward. He named Drew Dober and Matt Frevola as two notable lightweights he would like to face in the near future.

“I think with a good performance on Saturday, having another victory like that, I could be facing a ranked fighter or someone very close to the rankings,” Bonfim said. “I do think I deserve that.”

The first numbered UFC event of 2023 proved to be a good one. Two new champions were crowned Saturday at UFC 283 at Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro.

The main event of the organization’s return to Brazil after nearly three years saw [autotag]Jamahal Hill[/autotag] (12-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) deliver a lopsided beatdown of [autotag]Glover Teixeira[/autotag] (33-9 MMA, 16-7 UFC) to win a unanimous decision and claim the vacant light heavyweight champion.

Fighters from Saturday’s UFC 283 took home UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance pay totaling $359,500.

RIO DE JANEIRO – Fighters from Saturday’s UFC 283 event took home UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance pay totaling $359,500.

The program, a comprehensive plan that includes outfitting requirements, media obligations and other items under the fighter code of conduct, replaces the previous payments made under the UFC Athlete Outfitting Policy.

UFC 283 took place at Jeunesse Arena in Brazil. The main card aired on pay-per-view following prelims on ABC and ESPN+.

Under the UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance program’s payout tiers, which appropriate the money generated by Venum’s multi-year sponsorship with the UFC, fighters are paid based on their total number of UFC bouts, as well as Zuffa-era WEC fights (January 2007 and later) and Zuffa-era Strikeforce bouts (April 2011 and later). Fighters with 1-3 bouts receive $4,000 per appearance; 4-5 bouts get $4,500; 6-10 bouts get $6,000; 11-15 bouts earn $11,000; 16-20 bouts pocket $16,000; and 21 bouts and more get $21,000. Additionally, champions earn $42,000 while title challengers get $32,000.

In addition to experience-based pay, UFC fighters will receive in perpetuity royalty payments amounting to 20-30 percent of any UFC merchandise sold that bears their likeness, according to officials.

UFC 283 video: Gabriel Bonfim joins brother in win column with 49-second submission

Gabriel Bonfim joined his brother Ismael in the winner’s circle at UFC 283, then promised they will both hold UFC titles.

RIO DE JANEIRO – [autotag]Gabriel Bonfim[/autotag] made it an epic night for his family when he joined his brother [autotag]Ismael Bonfim[/autotag] in the UFC 283 winner’s circle courtesy of a quick submission win.

After his older brother delivered a Knockout of the Year contender earlier in the night at Jeunesse Arena, Bonfim (14-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) put on a performance of his own against [autotag]Mounir Lazzez[/autotag] (11-3 MMA, 2-2 UFC) in their welterweight bout.

Bonfim jumped on a guillotine choke against his oncoming opponent and forced Lazzez to tap out just 49 seconds after the bout began, keeping his undefeated record intact.

With the win, Bonfim was riding high after making an impression in his debut. He said this is just a sliver of what’s to come from his family name, and predicts he and his brother will both eventually hold UFC gold.

“The Bonfim brothers are here to become champions,” Bonfim said through an interpreter in his post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier. “One at lightweight. One at welterweight. We’re here to make history.”
