New York Islanders at Detroit Red Wings odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s New York Islanders at Detroit Red Wings odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The New York Islanders (29-24-15) and Detroit Red Wings (35-28-6) will square off Thursday at Little Caesars Arena. The opening faceoff will be at 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Islanders vs. Red Wings odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Islanders are looking to snap a 5-game losing skid (0-4-1). New York last played Tuesday at home, dropping a 4-1 contest against the Carolina Hurricanes. Four of the Isles’ 5 losses in the streak have been by multiple goals.

The Red Wings are on home ice for a 2nd straight game. They downed the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-3 in overtime Tuesday. How much the home venue matters is a matter of debate. Detroit is just 2-3-0 over its last 5 at home, and that stretch opened with a 5-3 setback against these Islanders Feb. 29.

New York and Detroit have split 2 games this season, with each club winning on road ice.

Islanders at Red Wings projected goalies

Sorokin allowed 3 goals on 33 shots in Tuesday’s loss to Carolina. He started both earlier games against the Wings and allowed 7 goals (all even-strength). The 28-year-old netminder logged an .885 SV% across those 2 starts.

Reimer was the winner Tuesday against the Jackets. He stopped 32 of 35 shots and owns a .934 SV% in his last 2 starts after faltering in a few early-March games.

Islanders at Red Wings picks and predictions

Prediction

Red Wings 4, Islanders 3

Moneyline

New York is just 14-15-5 on the road (0-3-0 in last 3). This is a 1-game road voyage for the Islanders, who are 1-3-0 in their last 4 such efforts. Two of those 3 road setbacks came against a subpar Montreal Canadiens club.

The last 4 series meetings at Little Caesars have seen Detroit go 3-1-0. The Red Wings have been underplaying recent expected-goal outputs and are a short-term candidate for some regression. In 5-on-5 play, they have been hurt by recent percentage lag, both in shooting and in save percentage.

Detroit has a top-10 power play (23.2%), and the Isles head into this contest with the NHL’s worst penalty-kill percentage (71.4%).

BACK THE RED WINGS (-115).

Puck line/Against the spread

Avoid the copious amount of juice here: PASS.

Over/Under

The Over cashed in both previous meetings this season. With the Isles having allowed 17 goals over their last 4 games, and their suspect rate of actual goals allowed to expected goals, the OVER 6.5 (+100) is the lean here.

New York Islanders at Detroit Red Wings odds, picks, and prediction

Analyzing Tuesday’s New York Islanders at Detroit Red Wings odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The New York Islanders (7-11-3) and Detroit Red Wings (13-12-3) meet for a Tuesday game at 7:30 p.m. ET at Little Caesars Arena. Below, we look at the Islanders vs. Red Wings odds and lines and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

New York heads into this game off a 4-2 Saturday win over the New Jersey Devils. The two goals allowed marked just the third time since Nov. 6 the Islanders have held a foe under three scores in a game. New York is 1-5 over its last six road games; that includes a 4-3 loss at Detroit Dec. 4.

The Red Wings are coming off two sloppy losses on the road and have lost three straight overall. Detroit coughed up a combined 13 goals over Thursday and Friday losses at St. Louis and Colorado, respectively. The Wings now return to home ice where they have won five of their last six.

Islanders at Red Wings projected goalies

Ilya Sorokin (7-6-4, 2.49 GAA, .925 SV%) vs. Alex Nedeljkovic (8-6-3, 2.81 GAA, .915 SV%)

Sorokin was a revelation last season and has been even better so far in 2021-22. He owns a .933 SV% over his last 13 starts. The 26-year-old has been particularly strong on shots from distance, and he has bolstered by an Islander defense that does a credible job preventing low-slot looks.

Nedeljkovic clocked a sparkling .949 SV% from Nov. 20-30, but he owns an .884 mark over four games since. He stopped 20-of-23 shots against the Islanders Dec. 4.

Islanders at Red Wings odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Islanders 4, Red Wings 3

Money line

With an 11-game losing streak behind them, peg the Islanders as a team picking up a little steam. New York’s offense still isn’t great, but it has been an offense hampered by a season-long 6.7% shooting mark in 5-on-5 situations.

In the man advantage, the Isles have struggled (their power play ranks 27th in the league). But the New York power play is 2-for-4 over its last two games and 5-for-its-last-13.

BACK THE ISLANDERS (-112).

Against the spread

The Islanders are 4-1 against the puck line in their last five games against Detroit. But the reward on New York here is a bit low. PASS.

Over/Under

With a bit of pushback on the goalie numbers and the value stance on the New York offense, there is a slight lean to the upside of this total. The lean is small, but consider a partial-unit play on the OVER 5.5 (+110).

New York Islanders at Detroit Red Wings odds, picks, and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s New York Islanders at Detroit Red Wings odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The New York Islanders (5-10-3) visit the Detroit Red Wings (12-9-3) Saturday for a battle between two teams on streaks. The contest at Little Caesars Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Islanders vs. Red Wings odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Islanders head into the game having lost nine in a row. New York has scored a combined 2 goals over its last four games and for the season ranks 31st in the NHL, scoring just 1.83 goals per game. The Islander power play (ranked 32nd at 10.2%) has produced just five goals this season.

The Red Wings endured a four-game losing skid from Nov. 15-20, but have bounced back to record four straight victories since. The Wings have scuffled defensively at times, and their 3.13-goals-allowed average ranks 23rd in the league. However, Detroit has been solid on home ice (6-1-0 last seven games) and has allowed just 2.00 GPG in its win streak.

Islanders at Red Wings projected goalies

Ilya Sorkin (5-6-3, 2.39 GAA, .929 SV%) vs. Alex Nedeljkovic (7-3-3, 2.58 GAA, .923 SV%)

Sorkin stopped 33-of-35 in a Thursday overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks. The 24-year-old owns a .943 SV% over his last three games and a .927 mark over his last seven.

Nedeljkovic has started 13 of Detroit’s 24 games. The 25-year-old stopped 41-of-42 pucks at Boston Tuesday and owns a fine .926 SV% in even-strength play.

Islanders at Red Wings odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Islanders 4, Red Wings 3

Money line

The Islanders own some puck-possession analytic figures that show them to be a bad offense but not as bad as the numbers they are hoisting on the scoreboard, while Detroit’s recent success isn’t fully supported in shot numbers.

New York is better at creating high-danger scoring chances. TAKE THE ISLANDERS (-112).

Against the spread

PASS on the big tag here in trying to get the Isles by with a 2-goal cushion,

Over/Under

Some stats-geek faith in better days ahead for the NYI offense mix with the right price on shooting for a 6-plus here. TAKE THE OVER 5.5 (+120).
