NFL announces 4 more gambling suspensions

The NFL has suspended three players for a season and one for 6 games for gambling infractions

The NFL continues to crack down on players who gamble. On Thursday, the league announced four more suspensions for said infractions.

Isaiah Rodgers and Rashod Berry of the Indianapolis Colts and free agent Demetrius Taylor are suspended indefinitely through at least the conclusion of the 2023 season for betting on NFL games in the 2022 season.

Nicholas Petit-Frere of the Tennessee Titans is suspended for the team’s first six regular season games of the 2023 season for betting on non-NFL sports at the club facility.

Earlier in the day, Petite Frere acknowledged his suspension.

The Titans released a statement about their offensive lineman:

“We have been made aware of Nick’s suspension by the league,” the Titans said. “We believe in Nick and know that he has deep respect for the integrity of the game and our organization. We will continue to emphasize to our players the importance of understanding and adhering to league rules and policies.”

And the Colts wasted little time in cutting the players who were suspended.

“We have made the following roster moves as a consequence of the determination that these players violated the league’s gambling policy,” Colts General Manager Chris Ballard said. “The integrity of the game is of the utmost importance. As an organization we will continue to educate our players, coaches, and staff on the policies in place and the significant consequences that may occur with violations.”

Add this into the equatin why Rodgers is gone:

Indianapolis Colts cornerback Isaiah Rodgers Sr. is expected to receive a season-long suspension from the league for violating the NFL’s policy on gambling.

The news was handed down Wednesday in response to an investigation that raised concerns that Rodgers was part of numerous bets on NFL games, reportedly including some that involved the team.

The expected unavailability of Rodgers casts serious doubt on the strength of the Colts’ cornerback unit. Despite returning veteran Kenny Moore II, the group is fragile regarding experience.

Several players are limited in starting experience, instead having niche skillsets related to special teams. Not to mention, the remaining unit is exceptionally young including this year’s draft class haul of Julius Brents, Jaylon Jones, and Darius Rush.

If the team chooses not to sign a veteran cornerback to replace Rodgers, fifth-round pick Darius Rush could get the nod to start in his place. Rush has elite athleticism with long arms that could help his assimilation into the role. However, asking Rush and several rookies to start in the secondary will be very challenging for the Colts and defensive coordinator Gus Bradley.

What could help these young players is a quick, explosive pass rush that can disrupt games and stop passing attacks. The team’s 11th-ranked defense, which produced 44 sacks and a pressure rate of 22% in 2022, will need to step up again to help mitigate the secondary youth. Additionally, this could be a prime opportunity for Kenny Moore to shine.

Before the beginning of last season, he wanted a new contract that matched his belief that not only was he the best slot corner in the NFL, but one of the best in the league, period. This is his chance to prove that as he enters his second year in Bradley’s system. Elite play on the field and accompanying mentorship could help lessen the weight of Rodgers’s absence.

The most important thing for fans to remember is that this will continue to be fluid. The coaching staff will continue to tweak the lineup based on production, matchups, and specific packages. Patience is needed and warranted.

6 things to watch as Colts begin minicamp

Here are six things to watch as the Colts begin mandatory minicamp.

The Indianapolis Colts are set to begin mandatory minicamp Tuesday, which marks the final three days they will be together as a team before breaking for summer.

Though it’s often said jobs aren’t won in the spring, practices at minicamp can help set the foundation for positional battles and depth chart climbers when training camp and the preseason arrive in August.

Here are six things to watch for as the Colts begin minicamp Tuesday:

NFL investigating Colts’ Isaiah Rodgers over gambling

Isaiah Rodgers of the Colts is the focus of a betting probe by the NFL, reports say

A report on Monday by Sportshandle.com indicated the NFL was probing an Indianapolis Colts player for gambling infractions. Hours later, ESPN confirmed the report and said the player was Colts CB/KR Isaiah Rodgers.

Rodgers appeared to acknowledge the investigation via his Twitter account.

Per SportsHandle:

While the new allegations around the Colts appear to be “isolated to one player,” there is evidence the Colts player placed hundreds of wagers, the source told Sports Handle on the condition of anonymity. At least some of the wagers, the source told Sports Handle on Sunday, were placed on the Colts. On Monday evening, ESPN reported that the player in question is Colts defensive back and kick returner Isaiah Rodgers Sr., a 2020 sixth-round draft pick by the Colts.

ESPN offered details about how the bets were placed and the amount for most of them.

The sportsbook account was opened under the name of an associate of Rodgers, the sources said. Approximately 100 bets were placed on the account over an undisclosed amount of time, including on Colts games, the sources said. Most of the bets were in the $25-$50 range, although there was at least one low four-figure bet.

SportsHandle reported when the bets were placed.

Most of the wagering occurred during 2022, with some of it extending into 2023.

The team released a statement, saying, “We are aware of the NFL’s investigation and will have no further comment at this time.”

In the evening, Rodgers released his statement:

7 breakout candidates for the Colts in 2023

Taking a look at the biggest breakout candidates for the Colts in 2023.

The Indianapolis Colts have added a ton of young talent in the last few draft classes.

Some players have developed into key contributors, some have outright busted while some are somewhere in the middle.

These in-between players entering Year 3 or are in the final year of a contract, while not outright busts by any stretch, must take advantage of the opportunity presented to them and finally turn those flashes into full-fledged production.

There are also younger second-year players who performed well in 2022 and feel due for even more production ahead or simply will get more opportunities afforded to them in Year 2.

Here are seven breakout candidates for the Colts in the 2023 season:

What keeping Kenny Moore II means for the Colts

The Colts are likely to keep CB Kenny Moore II. Here’s what that means for the team.

When the 2021 season ended, Indianapolis Colts cornerback Kenny Moore II expected changes. Moore had one of his better seasons in a Colts uniform, earning his first Pro Bowl honors.

He approached the 2022 season with an edge, hoping to be compensated for his talent as one of the NFL’s best slot corners.

Despite his best efforts to stand firm during a self-imposed “hold-in,” the Colts didn’t budge, putting pressure on Moore to strengthen his case.

Unfortunately, his 2022 season was underwhelming. Injuries and sub-par play stifled his campaign for more recognition, making him a potential cap casualty during the early portion of the offseason.

However, Moore is now expected to remain with the team for the 2023 season. What does Moore staying with the franchise mean?

Here are five thoughts about what keeping Moore means for the Colts:

5 CBs Colts could draft to replace Stephon Gilmore

Taking a look at five CB prospects the Colts could draft to replace Stephon Gilmore.

With cornerback Stephon Gilmore headed to Dallas, the Indianapolis Colts need young talent to replace him.

Additionally, with Brandon Facyson returning to Las Vegas and Kenny Moore’s future undetermined, the team is currently fragile at the position.

All eyes turn to the 2023 NFL Draft, where the Colts have nine draft picks and three in the fifth round alone. Unsurprisingly, general manager Chris Ballard has found great value in the later rounds, including cornerback Isaiah Rodgers Sr., who also enters a contract year.

Cornerback now becomes the second-most important position for the franchise.

Here are five cornerback prospects the Colts could draft to replace Gilmore:

Stock report from Colts’ 24-17 loss to Titans in Week 4

Here is the stock report from the Colts’ 24-17 loss to the Titans in Week 4.

The Indianapolis Colts (1-2-1) came close to pulling off a comeback in Week 4 but couldn’t finish job, losing 24-17 to the Tennessee Titans (2-2) at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The Colts went down by 21 points early and then clawed their way back to make it a one-score game with a quarter-and-a-half left in the game. However, they failed to muster any signs of life offensively and couldn’t complete the comeback.

Between performance and usage, we can gather a lot of information about a player’s stock. While we know the stock for the big-name players like Jonathan Taylor and Michael Pittman Jr., it’s the other pieces on the roster whose stock is likely to change the most throughout the season.

It’s important to remember that the stock report is fluid. A player whose stock fell in one week can rise the following week, and vice versa. It’s more about spotting trends and potential for the future based on what we saw in the game that week.

Here’s the stock report for the Colts after the Week 4 loss:

Colts vs. Texans: Initial injury report for Week 1

Here is the initial Week 1 injury report for the Colts and Texans.

The Indianapolis Colts were on the field Wednesday for their first official practice of the 2022 season as they prepare for the regular-season opener against the Houston Texans at NRG Stadium.

There are plenty of names to keep an eye on throughout the week now that the injury reports will come out. The big name to know is linebacker Shaquille Leonard who has been working his way back from offseason surgery.

Here’s a look at the initial injury report for the Colts in Week 1:

*DNP = Did Not Participate — LP = Limited Participant — FP = Full Participant*

Player Injury Wed. (9/7) Thur. (9/8) Fri. (9/9) Status
OT Dennis Kelly Knee LP
LB Shaquille Leonard Back FP

Notes

  • It’s a light injury report with Kelly, who has been working his way back from knee surgery during training camp.
  • Leonard could practice fully all week and still be a game-time decision. But starting the week as a full participant bodes well for him.
  • CB Isaiah Rodgers Sr. isn’t on the injury report after clearing the concussion protocol.
  • S Trevor Denbow (ankle) is on the injured reserve list.

Here is the initial injury report for the Texans in Week 1:

*DNP = Did Not Participate — LP = Limited Participant — FP = Full Participant*

Player Injury Wed. (9/7) Thur. (9/8) Fri. (9/9) Status
DL Rasheem Green Thigh DNP
DL Mario Addison Thigh LP

Colts’ Isaiah Rodgers Sr. cleared concussion protocol

Colts CB Isaiah Rodgers Sr. has cleared the concussion protocol.

Indianapolis Colts cornerback Isaiah Rodgers Sr. has cleared the concussion protocol, head coach Frank Reich told the media Wednesday.

Rodgers entered the concussion protocol after suffering an injury during the team’s preseason opener against the Buffalo Bills. The third-year cornerback recorded an interception and suffered the injury during the return on the play.

However, Reich said Rodgers has cleared the protocol as the Colts get back on the field Wednesday to prepare for the Houston Texans.

Rodgers was a candidate to break out for the Colts in 2022, but that notion may be put on hold for the moment as he’s working as the fourth cornerback behind Stephon Gilmore, Kenny Moore II and Brandon Facyson.

But having Rodgers there as the fourth cornerback, as well as the kick returner, is strong depth in the secondary.
