Patriots host four free agents for a workout

The New England Patriots reportedly hosted four free agent players for workouts on Friday, per ESPN’s Mike Reiss.

Those players included offensive lineman Mike Novitsky, fullback Nick Bawden, wide receiver Isaiah Ford and tight end Neal Johnson.

Ford’s name likely jumps out for most Patriots fans considering he was traded to New England from the Miami Dolphins for a seventh-round draft pick in 2020.

He didn’t appear in any games for the team, and he was ultimately waived a little over a month later.

Bawden is a former New York Jet who was released before the start of training camp. Meanwhile, Johnson was released by the Los Angeles Rams, and undrafted rookie center Novitsky was cut by the Seattle Seahawks.

The Patriots taking a closer look at Novitsky makes sense after the team put Jake Andrews on injured reserve on Monday. They could use some more depth in that position behind David Andrews and Nick Leverett.

Time will tell if Novitsky did well enough to create an opportunity for himself in New England.

Bears place WR Dante Pettis on Non-Football Injury list

The veteran receiver will not be practicing when the Bears take the field on Wednesday.

The Chicago Bears begin training camp practice on Wednesday but will be without one of their receivers and special teams contributors when they do. On Tuesday afternoon, the team announced they placed Dante Pettis on the Active/Non-Football injury (NFI) list.

The NFI list is for players who have ailments that are unrelated to football activities, or injuries that occur outside of NFL practices and games. Pettis can come off the list at any point and he counts toward the team’s 90-man roster during camp.

Pettis joined the Bears in 2022 and had a modest year on both offense and special teams. He caught 19 passes for 245 yards and three touchdowns in 17 games. He also became the team’s primary punt returner, averaging 9.1 yards per return.

The former 2018 second-round draft pick re-signed with the Bears earlier this offseason and will compete for a reserve receiver spot with players such as Velus Jones Jr., Daurice Fountain, and newcomer Isaiah Ford, who was signed earlier in the day, when he’s activated off the list. Pettis will also look to retain his hold on punt return duties.

Bears announce roster moves ahead of training camp

The Bears made the signings of Isaiah Ford and Buddy Johnson official, while also waiving two others.

The Chicago Bears have made some changes to the roster ahead of training camp, which officially begins Wednesday.

As previously reported, the Bears have signed wide receiver Isaiah Ford and linebacker Buddy Johnson. They also waived linebacker Sterling Weatherford and punter Ryan Anderson.

Ford, a former seventh-round pick by the Dolphins in 2017, has served as a reserve wideout during his career. He last saw action during the 2021 season, where he totaled 12 receptions for 161 yards and two touchdowns. In 2022, Ford spent the season on the Indianapolis Colts practice squad.

Johnson, a former fourth-round pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021, played primarily on special teams as a rookie. He was waived during roster cutdowns in his second season. But he soon landed on the San Francisco 49ers practice squad for the 2022 season.

Ford and Johnson and expected to serve as camp bodies, where they’ll also look to compete for a spot on Chicago’s practice squad.

Bears veterans report to Halas Hall for training camp Tuesday, with the first practice scheduled for Wednesday morning. (See the complete training camp schedule here).

Report: Bears to sign WR Isaiah Ford

After a successful workout, the Bears are reportedly signing wide receiver Isaiah Ford.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8221″]

The Chicago Bears will reportedly have a new wide receiver on their roster when training camp begins this week. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Bears are signing wide receiver Isaiah Ford to a contract. Schultz reported Ford had a workout with the Bears earlier on Monday prior to the signing.

Ford was drafted in the seventh round by the Miami Dolphins in 2017 out of Virginia Tech. He dealt with injuries his rookie season and didn’t become a significant contributor until the 2019 season. Ford was counted on as a backup receiver, totaling no more than 276 yards in a season.

He last saw regular season action in 2021 when he had 12 receptions for 161 yards and two touchdowns. He spent the 2022 season with the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad.

Ford’s signing raised questions about the status of Chase Claypool after he was placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. But shortly after the signing was reported, the Bears removed Claypool from the list, making him eligible to practice when training camp begins. Ford will try and earn a roster spot when practices begin this week. The entire team is set to report to training camp on Tuesday.

Bears work out WR Isaiah Ford

According to Jordan Schultz, the Bears brought in former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Isaiah Ford for a workout.

The Chicago Bears are just hours away from reporting to training camp but are still looking for reinforcements on offense. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Bears brought in wide receiver Isaiah Ford for a workout on Monday morning. This comes a day after the team placed wide receiver Chase Claypool on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list going into camp.

If the Bears were to sign Ford, he would likely just be a camp body to compete with the other players, even if Claypool were to miss extended time with an injury. But it’s clear the Bears aren’t done looking at improving the receiver position, even this close to camp.

Colts cut four players, roster down to 86

The Colts made their first roster cuts of training camp.

The Indianapolis Colts waived four players ahead of Tuesday’s roster cut deadline.

While the majority of teams across the NFL have to get down to 85 players, the Colts are allowed one extra spot because of defensive back Marcel Dabo, who joined the team through the NFL’s International Pathway program this offseason.

Here’s an explanation of the rule from J.J. Stankevitz of the team’s website:

“The Colts’ active roster is now at 86 players; the team has an exemption to carry safety Marcel Dabo as an extra player on the active roster, as he signed with the team through the NFL’s International Pathway Program. Dabo will not count toward the active roster or practice squad limit for the next two years.”

The Colts also released veteran offensive lineman Jason Spriggs before the preseason opener.

The Colts will cut five more players the Tuesday following the second preseason game against the Detroit Lions, and then the final roster cuts down to 53 players must be done before Aug. 30 at 4:00 p.m. ET.

Here are the four players the Colts waived Tuesday before the cutdown deadline:

Colts made flurry of roster moves before training camp

Here are the roster moves the Colts made before training camp.

If you woke up this morning with a little extra pep in your step, it’s likely because the Indianapolis Colts are officially beginning training camp on Wednesday.

After the team reported to camp on Tuesday, the stage is set for the Colts to make their run for the top spot in the AFC South for the first time since 2014.

But before that comes to fruition, the Colts made a flurry of roster moves leading up to training camp. More moves are likely to come during camp between injuries and transactions.

Here’s a look at the roster moves the Colts made before the start of training camp:

Colts sign WRs Isaiah Ford, John Hurst

Colts add two WRs to the mix before training camp.

The Indianapolis Colts signed wide receivers Isaiah Ford and John Hurst, and they waived wide receiver Kekoa Crawford and defensive tackle Caeveon Patton, the team announced Tuesday.

With training camp slated to start Wednesday, the Colts added some depth to the wide receiver room. Both Ford and Hurst were among the four wide receivers to work out for the Colts on Monday.

The depth was needed somewhat after second-year wideout Mike Strachan was placed on the PUP list to open training camp.

Ford, 26, was a seventh-round pick with the Miami Dolphins in the 2017 NFL draft. He has appeared in 32 games (three starts), recording 63 receptions for 681 receiving yards and two touchdowns throughout his career with the Dolphins (2017-2020, 2021) and New England Patriots (2020).

Hurst, 25, has yet to appear in an NFL game but has spent time on the practice squads of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Los Angeles Chargers since signing with the Bucs as an undrafted free agent following the 2020 NFL draft.

Former Dolphins WR Isaiah Ford signing with Colts

The wideout brought in his first two receiving touchdowns in 2021.

The Miami Dolphins went into the offseason with a bunch of players that were set to hit the market, but they were active, re-signing a fair amount of them back for 2022.

After not being re-signed, former Dolphins wide receiver Isaiah Ford has agreed to a deal with the Indianapolis Colts, the team announced on social media on Tuesday.

Ford was originally selected as a seventh-round pick in the 2017 draft out of Virginia Tech, but he missed the entirety of his rookie season on injured reserve.

The former Hokie spent parts of five seasons with the Dolphins, with a stop in New England in the middle, recording 63 receptions for 681 yards and two touchdowns, both of which were scored last season.

With how often Ford has been brought back to Miami, it would be dumb to say this is the last time we see him in aqua and orange.

Colts worked out four WRs before training camp

The Colts worked out four WRs on Monday.

The Indianapolis Colts held a tryout for four free-agent wide receivers Monday ahead of the start of 2022 training camp, per the league’s transaction wire.

With second-year wideout Mike Strachan starting camp on the PUP list, it isn’t a surprise to see the Colts checking out the talent that’s available on the market.

The four wide receivers included Isaiah Ford, John Hurst, Ishmael Hyman and Tyson Morris.

Of the quartet, Ford has the most NFL experience. He has played in 37 games while making three starts since entering the league in 2018.

Hurst and Hyman have bounced around the league a bit mostly on practice squads while Morris went undrafted during the 2022 NFL draft.

The Colts may make a move at wide receiver, and players like T.Y. Hilton, Julio Jones and Odell Beckham Jr. are still available as well.
