Colts cut four players, roster down to 86

The Colts made their first roster cuts of training camp.

The Indianapolis Colts waived four players ahead of Tuesday’s roster cut deadline.

While the majority of teams across the NFL have to get down to 85 players, the Colts are allowed one extra spot because of defensive back Marcel Dabo, who joined the team through the NFL’s International Pathway program this offseason.

Here’s an explanation of the rule from J.J. Stankevitz of the team’s website:

“The Colts’ active roster is now at 86 players; the team has an exemption to carry safety Marcel Dabo as an extra player on the active roster, as he signed with the team through the NFL’s International Pathway Program. Dabo will not count toward the active roster or practice squad limit for the next two years.”

The Colts also released veteran offensive lineman Jason Spriggs before the preseason opener.

The Colts will cut five more players the Tuesday following the second preseason game against the Detroit Lions, and then the final roster cuts down to 53 players must be done before Aug. 30 at 4:00 p.m. ET.

Here are the four players the Colts waived Tuesday before the cutdown deadline:

Predicting the Colts’ first 5 roster cuts before Tuesday’s deadline

Here’s a prediction of the Colts’ first five roster cuts before Tuesday’s deadline.

The Indianapolis Colts must reduce their roster from 90 to 85 players before the end of the league day Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. ET, which means five players are getting the unfortunate call.

Sometimes a player will be released simply because they don’t fit in the plans for the Colts. Other times, it may be so that a player can get more reps with another team before the season arrives even if they are a solid player. That was likely the case with veteran offensive lineman Jason Spriggs.

The first five cuts may not be as difficult for the Colts because it’s likely coming down to a numbers game at deeper positions.

Colts’ 2022 training camp preview: Offensive Tackle

Taking a look at the OTs entering training camp.

The Indianapolis Colts are less than two weeks away from the start of training camp, which again takes place at the Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield.

One of the more intriguing position battles will take place on the offensive line, specifically at left tackle where a veteran and a rookie will battle it out for the starting role on the blindside.

Be sure to check out the other position previews ahead of training camp:

With veterans reporting for training camp on July 26, here’s our preview of the offensive tackle spots:

Colts sign former Titans offensive lineman Brandon Kemp

Former Titans OL Brandon Kemp has signed with the Colts.

After being waived by the Tennessee Titans earlier this month, offensive lineman Brandon Kemp has signed with the Indianapolis Colts, per the league’s transactions wire.

A former 2020 undrafted free agent signing of Tennessee out of Valdosta State, Kemp never appeared in a game for the Titans over his two seasons with the team.

Kemp spent the 2020 campaign on the team’s practice squad. In 2021, the 25-year-old suffered a shoulder injury prior to the start of the season that landed him on injured reserve and ultimately ended his campaign.

With Indianapolis, Kemp will battle for a depth role at offensive tackle in training camp. The Colts’ top backup at the position in 2021, Matt Pryor, is taking over for former starting left tackle Eric Fisher, who wasn’t retained.

Of course, if he makes the roster in Indy, Kemp will see his former mates twice next season, once in Indianapolis and once in Tennessee.

Colts sign OT Brandon Kemp

The Colts signed OT Brandon Kemp.

The Indianapolis Colts signed offensive tackle Brandon Kemp, the team announced Friday.

Kemp worked out for the Colts on Thursday and the signing was quickly announced before the weekend. At 6-foot-7 and 310 pounds, Kemp has the type of frame that has historically intrigued general manager Chris Ballard.

Kemp initially entered the league as an undrafted free agent, signing with the Tennessee Titans in 2020. He spent his rookie season on the Titans’ practice squad and the 2021 season on the injured reserve list.

Kemp is expected to battle for a back-end depth spot with the Colts if he’s still on the roster when training camp comes around.

Tennessee Titans waive OT Brandon Kemp

Kemp was originally signed as an undrafted free agent in 2020.

The Tennessee Titans made a roster move on Thursday, waiving offensive tackle Brandon Kemp from their offseason roster.

A former undrafted free agent signing of the Titans in 2020, Kemp never appeared in a game for Tennessee. In 2021, the 25-year-old injured his shoulder, which landed him on Injured Reserve for the season.

With the uncertainty the Titans have at right tackle, Kemp could have had a chance to compete for the job, or at the very least, a good shot at a roster spot.

With the Valdosta State product now gone, the Titans have a total of 11 offensive linemen on their offseason roster, including Ben Jones, Daniel Munyer, Corey Levin, Nate Davis, Jordan Roos, Aaron Brewer, Derwin Gray, Jamarco Jones, Dillon Radunz, Christian DiLauro, and Taylor Lewan.

Brewer and Jones figure to be the top candidates for the left guard job, as is Radunz, who will also have a crack at the right tackle spot.

Notable Titans injuries from first week of training camp

The Titans didn’t emerge from their first week of training camp unscathed.

The Tennessee Titans wrapped up their first week of training camp at Saint Thomas Sports Park on Saturday, a week that consisted of four practices overall.

The team will have an off day on Sunday, and then players will take the field once again on Monday.

According to Titans beat writer Paul Kuharsky, the pads won’t come on until Tuesday, which is a big step in the evaluation process for the 53-man roster.

Tennessee didn’t come out of the week unscathed, though, as multiple players appeared to have suffered injuries over the first four days. Here’s a look at the most notable ones, and what we know so far, if anything at all.
