Why Iowa Will Win

Did Iowa get its groove back?

After falling off a cliff with a run of four losses in five games, the Hawkeyes came back strong with a blowout win over Rutgers to look the part again of a top team with a big tournament upside.

It was just one game, but the shooting was there, the rebounds were there, and the team was moving the ball around again like it’s supposed to.

Michigan State doesn’t force mistakes and doesn’t shoot well – that’s a deadly combination. It doesn’t manufacture enough transition points and doesn’t hit well inside or out, but …

Why Michigan State Will Win

The Spartans are doing just fine lately.

In a lost year with a four-game losing streak as part of an awful Big Ten run, it took advantage of the Nebraska free-space win and came up with its struggles victory of the season with a 60-58 fight against Penn State.

That doesn’t mean MSU is back to normal, but at least it’s showing the fight that was missing at times in earlier loses. The defense from three has been excellent even when things were going wrong, and the offense is moving things around well enough to get easier shots against a porous Iowa defense.

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa won at home against the Spartans a few days ago, but it was an interesting 84-78 battle. MSU will do a nice job of keeping up for most of the game, and Iowa isn’t going to shoot 50% from the field again. However, the Spartans aren’t going to hit over 40% from three like it did in the first meeting.

Why Michigan State Will Win

Michigan State has to catch the Hawkeyes while they’re down.

It’s been a rough two games for Iowa with a surprising blowout loss to Indiana and a tough battle against Illinois. The shooting has been off, it was a struggle getting to the line against the Fighting Illini, and the defense failed in both games.

Michigan State might be struggling – to be kind – but it’s still good on the boards, it was moving the ball around well before the last few games since being off for 20 days, and …

Why Iowa Will Win

The Spartans really, really can’t shoot.

Iowa doesn’t do a whole lot defensively, and it won’t have to against a team that can’t hit anything from the outside and can’t seem to buy a break over the last two games.

The Hawkeyes have to get out to a fast start – do that, and it’s over.

No, they’re not shooting all that well over the last few games, but they still have the ability to score inside or out with a whole lot of options compared to what MSU can do.

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan State was miserable in the loss to Rutgers and followed it up by being just bad in a blowout loss to Ohio State. Again, Iowa can score and Michigan State can’t. The Spartans don’t force enough mistakes to change that.

Why Michigan State Will Win

Air Spartan? Michigan State has the best passing game in the Big Ten after two weeks?

Rocky Lombardi might not have been perfect against Rutgers with his two picks, and he might not have hit enough passes against Michigan, but he blew past the 300-yard mark and three touchdown passes in each of the first two games.

The Iowa pass defense hasn’t been bad, but as long as the Spartans aren’t turning the ball over in bunches like they did in the Rutgers game, they should be able to move the ball. Like they showed against Michigan, they might be one of those teams that just finds a way to make things happen when needed, but …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Iowa Will Win

This is one desperate Iowa team that’s a whole lot better than it showed so far.

It was fine against Purdue, and lost by four. It was fine against Northwestern, and it lost by one. There are only so many bowl slots this year for the Big Ten, and lose this for an 0-3 start, and it’ll be a tough run to make this a decent season.

The offensive line has been good in pass protection, but the running game wasn’t able to get rolling against the Wildcats, and the passing attack has been off. QB Spencer Petras has only hit 54% of his throws with nothing happening down the field, but Michigan State will give up yards on midrange passes.

It’s just a matter of moving the chains. This has looked and played like a team that needed a few tune-ups, and it’s possible they’re out of the way now.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

Just like it wasn’t like the Spartans weren’t all that bad in the loss to Rutgers – the Scarlet Knight offense didn’t work at all – they weren’t totally wonderful against Michigan. Getting the win, though, as a massive underdog works no matter what.

Iowa is overdue for a good offensive performance after the sub-300-yard day against Northwestern, but Michigan State’s D will rise up and make it yet another tough outing. The Hawkeyes will be on the right side of a close game this time thanks to a good day from the defense, but it won’t be pretty.

Iowa at Michigan State college basketball odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s Iowa Hawkeyes at Michigan State Spartans sports betting odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks and tips.

The Iowa Hawkeyes (19-8, 10-6 Big Ten) travel to the Great Lake State on Tuesday to play the Michigan State Spartans (18-9, 10-6) in the Breslin Center at 7 p.m. ET. We analyze the Iowa-Michigan State odds and betting lines, with college basketball betting advice and tips around this matchup.

The Hawkeyes are No. 17 and the Spartans No. 24 in the USA TODAY Sports men’s basketball coaches poll.

Iowa at Michigan State: Three things you need to know

1. The Spartans have had a bumpy February. Michigan State did smack up Nebraska 86-65 in its last game (Thursday), but is just 2-4 overall this month.

2. Iowa’s 10-6 Big Ten record puts them in a five-way tie for second place in the conference. The Hawkeyes have won back-to-back games, beating No. 23 Ohio State Buckeyes 85-76 Thursday and the Minnesota Golden Gophers 58-55 Feb. 16.

3. The matchup to focus on is Iowa C Luka Garza against Michigan State F Xavier Tillman. Garza has caused matchup nightmares for opponents all season and will need to be the focal point of the Spartans defense. He should be a finalist for Big Ten Player of the Year since he leads the Big Ten in points per game, PER and Win Shares.

Prediction

Iowa 80, Michigan State 77

Moneyline (ML)

This is their first meeting of the season, but Michigan State won four straight in the series, three of which by double-digits. However, I give the Hawkeyes a chance to pull off an upset because this Spartans team isn’t as offensively explosive as the previous teams that rolled Iowa. The Hawkeyes have two upperclassmen big men in their starting lineup — Garza and F Ryan Kriener — that both stand taller than any of the Spartans starters. That size advantage could pay dividends for Iowa. Take a flyer on IOWA +310 to win outright.

Against the Spread (ATS)

Iowa has the best ATS in the Big Ten at 16-8-3. Michigan State is near the bottom with a 12-15 ATS record. The Hawkeyes have been a much better ATS vs. good teams than the Spartans; Iowa is 5-2-2 ATS against ranked opponents, while Michigan State is 1-6 ATS. Bet IOWA +7.5 (+100).

Over/Under (O/U)

Let’s go with the OVER 151.5 (-110) since it correlates with our ML and ATS handicaps. Their combined O/U record is 23-29-2, but Iowa has a 9-7 O/U record in Big Ten games. Also, the Hawkeyes are 6-3 O/U against ranked opponents and the Over has cashed in four of their last five games.
