Sooners center Troy Everett to have surgery, miss significant time

Brent Venables confirmed Tuesday night that projected starting center Troy Everett suffered an injury that would require hime to miss significant time.

The Oklahoma Sooners offensive line has been under the microscope this offseason. They’re working to replace all five starters up front, including a projected first-rounder at tackle, [autotag]Tyler Guyton[/autotag].

The Sooners have a good amount of competitive depth to work within their position battles this spring, but that depth took a hit at practice last week. It was reported by several outlets that center [autotag]Troy Everett[/autotag] went down in practice and didn’t return. At the time it was speculated to be a knee injury, though the severity was unknown.

At last night’s media availability, Oklahoma head coach [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] revealed that the injury would require surgery. Venables shared that Everett would have surgery on Wednesday and miss significant time this offseason.

“We got some bad news with Troy Everett. He’s going to have a surgery,” Venables said. “But we’re hoping to see him back by the end of fall camp or so. And if anybody can do it, he will. We’ve got great doctors and a great plan for him.”

According to reports, Everett had been working with the first-team offense, but now the Sooners will turn to their depth to prepare for 2024.

[autotag]Josh Bates[/autotag] is expected to get the first crack at taking over for Everett. He hasn’t played much for the Sooners to this point, but the coaching staff are high on his potential.

“And we got a tougher guy out here than Josh Bates, man,” Venables said. “He’s just a football player.”

Edmond Santa Fe 2024 signee [autotag]Josh Aisosa[/autotag] and Washington transfer [autotag]Geirean Hatchett[/autotag] will also get some opportunities as well.

Oklahoma expects Everett to be back by the end of fall camp, but competition this spring could provide another answer at center for the fall if Everett isn’t ready to go for week one of the season.

Wisconsin veteran outside linebacker Aaron Witt returns to practice

Remember Aaron Witt?

Wisconsin veteran outside linebacker Aaron Witt is back on the practice field as the Badgers’ spring session continues.

WOZN’s Zach Heilprin was in attendance at the team’s practice on Tuesday. He wrote on X that “today was the first time I’ve seen [Witt] actually practice. Ton of energy from him, especially after he crushed the move TE on a run play. Got some work with 2nd-team defense.”

Related: Wisconsin football’s starting offense and defense begin to take shape at spring practice

Witt appeared in two games in 2023 after being out since Wisconsin’s 2020 Duke’s Mayo Bowl victory over Wake Forest. He returned to practice in a limited capacity in the Badgers’ preparation for the ReliaQuest Bowl in December 2023, but he appears to be full-go for the first time in nearly four years.

Witt registered two tackles for loss and one sack in two games of action as a freshman in 2020. His sack on Sam Hartman in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl had Badgers fans excited for what was to come, though injuries unfortunately derailed the next three years of his career.

Predicting Witt to be a starter or play consistent snaps may be a stretch. But he still has a ton of potential if he can just stay on the field once the season begins.

For more spring practice preview, we’ve analyzed the spring position battles, the biggest questions entering the period and Wisconsin’s possible breakout candidates — plus predicted Wisconsin’s depth chart on offense and on defense.

Ricky Council IV, Terquavion Smith and Jeff Dowtin Jr. are on G League assignments.

Florida infielder Cade Kurland playing injured since Columbia series

What was originally thought to be a bone bruise for Florida second baseman Cade Kurland is actually a fracture, but he’ll continue to play.

Florida second baseman [autotag]Cade Kurland[/autotag] has been playing injured since he took a ball off his hand during the series opener against Columbia a few back.

What was first believed to be a bone bruise is actually a fracture, Kurland revealed on Friday night after hitting a walk-off single against Mississippi State.

“I had an MRI on Monday and it turns out that for the past five weeks, I’ve been playing with a fractured hand,” Kurland said. “It’s been hard, but I’ve kind of just been doing the best I can to play through it and here we are.”

Kurland said he adjusted his batting grip to leave two fingers off the bat. He only recently moved back to nine now that the pain is becoming manageable. A lot of time spent in the training room makes it possible for him to take the field every day, but there is risk in playing with a crack in a bone.

“The way I work, I hit and I hit and I hit,” he said. “That’s my routine. That alone, my routine has changed. I’ve had to be much more conservative with my routine, which obviously isn’t favorable to me… It’s been hard but it’s one of those things where you put the team first and I’m just doing the best I can.”

The injury explains some unusual performances from Kurland throughout the season. A five-strikeout day against Miami was the first sign something wasn’t right. At the time, Kevin O’Sullivan told Gators Wire that it wasn’t much of a concern because “he doesn’t have many days like that.”

Sully was right. Kurland put together a nine-game hitting streak, but his average continued to drop and the strikeouts came in bunches. Kurland’s defense has been the bigger problem, though. He’s struggled to make certain throws, likely because he can’t get the grip on the ball that he’s used to.

“I’m throwing with my palm,” Kurland said.

There is no timeline for recovery from this injury, especially because Kurland is playing with it. He said he didn’t feel anything running to first after the walk-off, though.

Warriors’ Klay Thompson late scratch on Friday vs. Hornets

The veteran shooter will miss Friday’s game against the Hornets after being a late scratch due to right knee tendinitis.

With Jonathan Kuminga already out for Friday’s road contest against the Charlotte Hornets, another key member of the Golden State Warriors was lost before the opening buzzer.

Before the tip, veteran sharpshooter Klay Thompson was scratched due to right knee tendinitis.

Via @MontePooleNBCS on X, formerly known as Twitter:

Thompson has been heating up of late, scoring 15 or more points in each of the Warriors’ last seven games. During that span, Thompson is averaging 20.4 points on 47.7% from the field and 40.5% from beyond the arc.

Without Thompson, veteran point guard Chris Paul will enter the starting lineup. Moses Moody and rookie Brandin Podziemski could see an increased role against the Hornets with both Kuminga and Thompson set to miss the game on Friday.

The Warriors will tip off against the Hornets at 4 p.m. PT in Charlotte on Friday.

Latrell Wrightsell ruled day-to-day ahead of Sweet 16

Will Alabama have its sharp-shooting senior back for the Sweet 16?

On Thursday night from Los Angeles, [autotag]Nate Oats[/autotag] will lead the Alabama Crimson Tide men’s basketball team in a Sweet 16 matchup against the North Carolina Tar Heels. The winner will earn a spot in the Elite Eight, a feat the Alabama program has only accomplished once in its history.

Tide fans have been curious since Sunday night if Alabama would have starting guard Latrell Wrightsell in the lineup against the Tar Heels and Coach Oats provided the latest on Wednesday afternoon following the team’s practice.

In short, Wrightsell’s status remains uncertain for tomorrow night’s matchup as Coach Oats ruled the sharp-shooting senior as “day-to-day”.

“Latrell is being reevaluated by the medical staff every day”, Oats told reporters. “He’s basically on a day-to-day basis now. I’m not sure if he’ll be available or not.”

Wrightsell’s availability will be critical for Alabama’s success against the top-seeded Tar Heels.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to monitor the status of Wrightsell leading up to tipoff tomorrow night.
