Commanders Week 17 injury news: Latest updates on Marshon Lattimore, others

What’s the latest on Marshon Lattimore and others?

The Washington Commanders (10-5) will host the Atlanta Falcons (8-7) on Sunday at Northwest Stadium in a pivotal NFC matchup.

A current look at the NFC playoff field has the Falcons and Commanders in. Atlanta is the No. 4 seed, while Washington is the seventh seed. The Falcons lead the NFC South but must continue to win as they are tied with the Buccaneers. The Commanders will clinch a playoff berth with a win or if Carolina beats Tampa Bay earlier in the day.

So, what is the status of some injured players ahead of Sunday’s showdown between the Commanders and Falcons?

Washington was without starting cornerback Marshon Lattimore (hamstring) and right tackle Andrew Wylie (groin) on Thursday. Lattimore reinjured his hamstring late in last week’s win over the Eagles. If he doesn’t practice on Friday, he’ll likely miss Sunday’s game, which would be a tough blow for the Commanders.

If Wylie can’t go, Washington has Cornelius Lucas.

Wide receiver Dyami Brown injured his hamstring on a deep catch last week. Brown has become more involved in the offense in recent weeks, and he’d be a bigger loss than some realize. Brown gives the Commanders another player, outside of Terry McLaurin, who can make plays down the field.

Atlanta had several players limited, including wide receiver Drake London (knee). However, London was limited last week, too, and played on Sunday.

We’ll continue to monitor Washington’s injury situation ahead of Sunday Night Football.

Commanders DT Jonathan Allen ‘ready to play’ in Week 17 vs. Falcons

Jonathan Allen is ready to return on Sunday.

Could Jonathan Allen play this week for the Washington Commanders? The two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle believes he’ll be ready for a return after missing the past nine games with a partially torn pec.

Allen met with the media after Thursday’s practice and was asked if the plan was for him to play on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.

“To my knowledge, it is, but I don’t wanna speak for them,” Allen said. “Obviously, we’ll see moving forward, I’m preparing as if I’m playing, so we’ll go from there.”

The Commanders are currently 10-5 and playing meaningful football in December. Allen, who is in his eighth NFL season — all with Washington — has been a part of several losing teams. So, was it hard for to miss this time when the team is actually good?

“Whenever you’re not out there with the team, it’s always tough,” Allen said. “But knowing all the guys in the locker room, it’s exciting for them and I knew there was going to be an opportunity for me to come back.”

The Commanders host the Falcons on Sunday Night Football and could clinch a playoff berth before the game kicks off.

G Jordan Meredith injury update

Meredith injured his ankle in the team’s loss to the Falcons in Week 15. He missed last week’s game against the Jaguars and did not practice Thursday.

Should he not be able to go again, Jackson Powers-Johnson would again line up at left guard and Andre James would start at center.

G/C Jackson Powers-Johnson injury update

JPJ injured his quad and his ankle last Sunday. He was replaced briefly at left guard by Cody Whitehair and then returned to finish the game. He was limitd today.

RB Dylan Laube injury update

Laube showed up on the injury report today, missing practice with an illness. He is primarily a return specialist.

QB Derek Carr injury update

Carr fractured his left hand on December 8 and has been trying to return to face his former team this week. Though he did not practice today, his head coach is still hopeful there is a chance Carr could play this week.

Saints head coach hoping Derek Carr can play vs former team Raiders Week 17

Derek Carr is trying to play Week 17 when his former Raiders team comes to New Orleans to face the Saints.

Back on December 8th when Derek Carr broke his left hand in a game against the New York Giants, most thought his season was likely over. Which would have meant he wouldn’t get the opportunity to face his former Raiders team when they come to New Orleans in Week 17.

Now just three weeks later, Saints head coach Darren Rizzi has opened up the possibility that Carr could play after all.

“You know I’m hoping so,” said Rizzi of the possibility of Carr playing. “We came out of the last few days with him getting a little bit better. So I think at some point this week, we’re going to try to simulate what it would be like in a game and see if he’s able to function and . . . if he’s able to do it then we’ll do it.”

Rizzi added that Carr wants to get back and he’s been working hard to try and make that happen. As you can understand considering it would be his first — and possibly only — chance to face the team with which he spent the first nine years of his career.

But in order for that to happen, he must be able to use the hand to protect himself, protect the ball, and the Saints will have to be able to run their offense as well with his limitations as they would with one of their other QB’s in order for it to make sense.

If Carr isn’t able to prove he is ready to return, then it will be rookie Spencer Rattler who will get his fifth start of the season. Though the Saints have no won with Rattler at QB, including Monday becoming the only team in the NFL to be shut out.

That performance has some wondering if perhaps second year QB Jake Haener might get a shot at starting. The uncertainty means the Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham has his work cut out for him preparing for all three quarterbacks.

“We’ll have more information with the injury reports and things of that nature,” said Graham. “And then from there, in terms of how we allocate the time and practice if there is a change in scheme, I got to take an educated guess as the defensive coordinator in terms of what we’re going to practice and be ready to adjust. But I think they all have three specific toolsets that provide challenges for us as a defense.”

The Saints held a walk-thru this week, so their first injury report was an estimate. We will know more about Carr’s potential availability when today’s injury report comes out.

Doug Pederson: Jaguars OT Walker Little likely out for season

Doug Pederson: Jaguars OT Walker Little likely out for season

Jaguars starting left tackle Walker Little’s 2024 season is likely over due to a high-ankle sprain, Jacksonville head coach Doug Pederson told reporters on Thursday.

Pederson on Monday deemed Little out of Jacksonville’s Week 17 matchup with the Tennessee Titans. He hurt his ankle against the New York Jets in Week 15 and aggravated the injury against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 16.

“Walker Little will be out with the ankle, he’ll probably miss the rest of the year,” Pederson said Thursday.

Pederson said third-year Jaguars offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen will fill in for Little at left tackle for the rest of the season.

Little started eight games at left tackle and made 15 appearances with the Jaguars in 2024, his fourth season with the club. He took over as Jacksonville’s starting left tackle in Week 8; former starter Cam Robinson was traded to the Minnesota Vikings the next week.

Little received a three-year, $45 million contract extension from the Jaguars on Dec. 1., roughly one month after taking over the first-team role.

Jacksonville’s second-round, No. 45 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, Little has made 55 appearances and 25 starts with the Jaguars.

Commanders coach Dan Quinn gives encouraging injury update on RB Austin Ekeler

Some potentially good news concerning Commanders RB Austin Ekeler.

Washington Commanders running back Austin Ekeler is eligible to return from injured reserve ahead of next week’s regular-season finale against the Dallas Cowboys. It’s fitting that Ekeler could potentially return against the Cowboys as it was at the end of the game against Dallas in Week 12 when Ekeler suffered his second concussion of the season.

Before Ekeler was injured, he was among Washington’s top receivers and rushers. Early this season, Ekeler was a critical part of the Commanders’ passing game with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Washington was in a bit of an offensive tailspin at the time of Ekeler’s injury. However, the Commanders have won all three games that Ekeler has missed.

Shortly after his injury, Ekeler offered a scary update on his second concussion this season.

“I think it’s important to kind of diagnose the magnitude of the situation – like, I didn’t even remember how I got off the field,” Ekeler said earlier this month in an appearance on “Grant and Danny” of 106.7 The Fan in Washington, D.C.

“I remember kind of coming to, but I had some short-term memory loss, and all I remember was my wife was sitting in the room, and I was getting evaluated by our medical staff in the back room.”

The Commanders host the Falcons this week with a chance to clinch a playoff berth. Is it possible for Ekeler to return next week?

“Absolutely possible,” head coach Dan Quinn said Wednesday. “Yeah. So, Austin is definitely trending in the right way. Workouts are going great. He’s in meetings; he’s doing all the stuff with us. So yeah, we’re certainly optimistic, and we’ll just play the whole thing out. But like you said, the earliest that he would begin is next week. But, it’s been encouraging to see the progress that he’s made.”

That’s excellent news for the Commanders. If Ekeler is cleared ahead of next week and Washington clinches on Sunday, would the team sit him for Week 18 or hold him out until the playoff opener?

Regardless, the Commanders could be getting some key players back from IR, such as Ekeler and defensive tackle Jonathan Allen.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid reveals the injury status of Pro Bowlers before Christmas Day

Kansas City #Chiefs head coach Andy Reid reveals the injury status of Chris Jones, Patrick Mahomes and more before Week 17 | @EdEastonJr

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid addressed the numerous injuries on his roster during Monday’s press conference, including lingering issues with Pro Bowlers ahead of the Christmas Day matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“Alright, so the guys that won’t practice today are (Chamarri) Conner,(D.J.) Humphries and Chris Jones.” said Reid. (They’re) all making improvement, but again, quick turnaround here, so we’ll just keep evaluating throughout here.”

Conner missed Week 16 after suffering a concussion in Week 15 against the Cleveland Browns, and Jones went down with a calf injury during Saturday’s victory over the Houston Texans. The All-Pro defensive tackle leads the NFL in pressures this season with 74, according to Pro Football Focus, and the Chiefs are the only team with multiple players in the top 11, with George Karlaftis having 58.

The high ankle sprain that has affected Patrick Mahomes since he injured it against the Browns is improving, according to Reid.

“He (Patrick Mahomes) did good,” said Reid. “Yeah, it’s sore, but he did well. (He’s a) pretty tough kid, man. That was an amazing thing he did.”

D.J. Humphries is still dealing with a hamstring injury and has yet to practice since injuring it in Week 14. Joe Thuney has started at left tackle in his place over the last two weeks.

Commanders’ injury updates after Week 16 win over Eagles

Commanders suffered a few injuries in win over Eagles.

We are at the point in the NFL season when injuries are piling up. Over the past few weeks, the Washington Commanders have dealt with injuries and lost multiple key players.

Heading into Sunday’s showdown with the Philadelphia Eagles, safety Jeremy Chinn and tight end Zach Ertz were listed as questionable. Chinn and Ertz were in the NFL’s concussion protocol but played against the Eagles.

It was a wild game, with Washington turning the ball over five times, but rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels willed the Commanders to an impressive come-from-behind win over the Eagles.

But that win could prove costly as Washington deals with more injuries.

The most concerning injury is that of cornerback Marshon Lattimore. Last month, he was traded to Washington at the NFL trade deadline. However, Lattimore missed the first four games with his new team due to a preexisting hamstring injury.

Lattimore debuted last week against his former team, the Saints, and was outstanding. On Sunday, he was matched up with Eagles star A.J. Brown, and the pair battled all day.

Late in Sunday’s win over the Eagles, Lattimore left the game with a hamstring injury. He did not return. With two games remaining in the regular season and the Commanders closing in on a playoff spot, Washington needs a healthy Lattimore.

What did head coach Dan Quinn say about Lattimore afterward?

“Yeah, I don’t have an update from an injury standpoint,” Quinn said. “Both he and [LB] Jordan Magee and [T] Andrew Wylie all were injured in the game, so I don’t have an update there.”

Did Quinn not offer an update because he fears the worst for Lattimore? Or was this a case of “We’ll see tomorrow.”

Magee plays mostly special teams, while Wylie is Washington’s starting right tackle. The Commanders have played without Wylie this season, and if he misses more time, Cornelius Lucas would likely take over.

Quinn didn’t mention wide receiver Dyami Brown, who suffered an injury in the third quarter and was ruled out. It was also a hamstring issue.

The Commanders host the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday Night Football next week. We’ll continue to monitor the health of Washington’s key injuries throughout the week.

Falcons WR Drake London questionable to return vs. Giants

Drake London is questionable to return vs. the Giants due to a hamstring injury

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Drake London is questionable to return against the New York Giants after he suffered a hamstring injury in the second half.

While he is listed as questionable, there is some doubt as to whether the wideout will be able to return with time winding down in the fourth quarter.

This marks one of multiple injuries in this game after the Falcons had largely evaded the injury bug for some time now. In addition to inciting an in-game scuffle, London had totaled five receptions for 59 yards as the team’s leading receiver when he went down.

He is now second to Darnell Mooney, who has reeled in four receptions for 70 yards. The Falcons lead the Giants, 34-7 with just over 10 minutes left to play in the fourth quarter.

No team in NFL more injury depleted than Raiders

A study shows the Raiders have more of their starting lineup either on injured reserve or OUT than any other team in the NFL.

Recently we did a dive into the injury issues that have occurred on the Raiders defense. And how more than half their defensive starters are either on injured reserve or have spent significant amounts of time sidelined by injury.

The question is, however, is whether the Raiders have had it worse than other teams in the NFL this season. Well, we have the answer. And with nearly 32% of their starting lineup OUT or on IR, it’s a decided YES.

According to a study by JPA Football, the Raiders are tied for the most week one starters either on IR or OUT this week. Take a look for yourself at the Raiders week one starters with the players not playing right now:

*Injured and then replaced in the starting lineup.

Adams, of course, was injured, then traded, but the result for the Raiders is the same.

The thing is, it’s probably for the best, honestly. Minshew was benched prior to getting injured and this team wasn’t going anywhere without a quarterback.
