Saints upgrade Alvin Kamara, list other new ailments on updated injury report vs. Colts

Saints upgrade Alvin Kamara, list other new ailments on updated injury report vs. Colts

Let’s start with the good news. The New Orleans Saints upgraded running back Alvin Kamara (illness) and right tackle Ryan Ramczyk (concussion) to full reps at practice on Thursday, signaling that they’ll be full-go on Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts

Now the other shoe drops. Three players were added as limited participants on Thursday — cornerback Alontae Taylor has a hip injury while offensive guard Max Garcia and tight end Jimmy Graham were dealing with illnesses. Safety Marcus Maye was already limited with a hamstring issue but he’s also now listed with an illness. On top of that, safety J.T. Gray (hamstring) was downgraded and didn’t practice Thursday after being limited Wednesday. That hamstring issue has sidelined him for a few weeks now.

Other than that, everything else was unchanged for the Saints. Offensive lineman James Hurst (ankle) isn’t practicing. Limited participants included tight end Juwan Johnson (calf), offensive tackle Landon Young (hip), linebacker Demario Davis (knee), safety Tyrann Mathieu (foot), and quarterback Taysom Hill (chest). We’ll get game statuses for everyone on Friday’s final injury report, so stay tuned.

Zach Johnson says U.S. team dealing with ‘unforeseen things’ in terms of health at 2023 Ryder Cup

“We have got some congestion and some just signs of things that are unfortunate.”

Zach Johnson tried his best Friday evening to squash any notion he was disappointed in his team’s showing during the opening day of matches at the 2023 Ryder Cup.

The United States captain said he was proud of how his team fought, even considering the Americans are in a 6½-1½ hole against the Europeans at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, Italy. The U.S. didn’t win one match on Friday and was swept in the morning session of foursomes but managed to halve three fourball matches in the afternoon.

However, Johnson hinted the Americans may not be 100 percent in the health department. He was asked whether the afternoon lineup was scripted and answered there were things they could and couldn’t control, and then he said this to a follow-up question.

“The bottom line is there’s been some unforeseen things that we’ve had to navigate around, which is really unfortunate, in the sense of health,” Johnson said. “It’s not an excuse, because we have depth, but I’ll just say, I’m grateful we have a team doctor.

“We’re just fighting things, I mean, internally. It’s kind of passed around a little bit, caddies, players. It is what it is. But it’s nothing more than that. Guys are fighting and playing regardless. I mean, it’s not anything that’s kind of weighed us down because of the depth we have and because of the many options we think we have.”

That’s certainly not anything American fans want to hear after what transpired on the course Friday. Some may view it as the U.S. making excuses. Others may look at it as an actual crutch to the limping American team after the first day of play.

Later in his press conference, Johnson elaborated more on the illness.

“We have got some congestion and some just signs of things that are unfortunate,” Johnson said. “It’s one of those where sometimes the energy is probably a little low, but the ability and desire to go out and play is still there. That’s what we are weighing. Every one of them still wants to play every match, which is encouraging.

“It kind of has, yeah, I’m being honest, yes, it has. It has spread through my team.”

Sounds like the Americans need some Benadryl and NyQuil before Saturday’s play begins.

Cowboys make late add to injury report; Malik Hooker says he’ll ‘absolutely’ go

From @ToddBrock24f7: Hooker was added to the report with an unspecified illness but is expected to play. The safety himself confirmed it with a famous GIF.

Cowboys safety Malik Hooker was a very late add to the team’s Week 1 injury report, showing up Saturday afternoon with an unspecified illness designation that left him classified as questionable to play.

On the surface, that news would be quite concerning, considering that fellow safety Donovan Wilson is already listed as doubtful for the season opener against the Giants.

Nevertheless, the team called the move “procedural,” stating that Hooker, the seventh-year veteran, was still expected to go versus the divisional rivals from New York.

Hooker himself made a more ironclad promise to Cowboys fans via social media.

The GIF, of course, comes from Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals, when Bulls superstar Michael Jordan played through a nasty bout of… something… to score 38 points in 44 minutes, including the tie-breaking three-pointer in the waning seconds. His heroic performance in the win has gone down in history as “The Flu Game,” although it’s been revealed recently that it was more likely a case of food poisoning.

Either way, it’s become the go-to inspiration for every athlete who’s feeling under the weather on gameday yet hopes to soldier on and help deliver a win anyway.

Hooker left no doubt about the meaning of his post shortly thereafter.

“Absolutely” was his one-word response to Dallas Morning News reporter Michael Gehlken’s post in which Gehlken offered, “Have a feeling we’ll see Cowboys S Malik Hooker on Sunday night…”

In a bit of fortuitous scheduling, the Cowboys’ primetime Sunday night kickoff even gives MH several extra hours to rest up and channel his inner MJ.

Chiefs DT Chris Jones ‘under the weather’ ahead of Super Bowl LVII

According to a report, #Chiefs DT Chris Jones is feeling a bit “under the weather” ahead of #SuperBowlLVII

As we await the first injury report for the Chiefs in the week ahead of Super Bowl LVII, there are some illness concerns for Kansas City.

According to NFL Network’s James Palmer, Chiefs DT Chris Jones told him that he’s “under the weather” and dealing with both congestion and a sore throat. Palmer added that it seemed like a few players for K.C. were battling something today.

On Tuesday, many made observations that star QB Patrick Mahomes sounded nasal and stuffed up during his interviews, including our friend Devon Clements of HeavyOnChiefs.

This, of course, could be entirely unrelated. He could simply be nasal and hoarse from all the talking he had to do during Super Bowl opening night.

It’s unlikely that this illness causes any significant problems during Super Bowl LVII, but it’s certainly worth monitoring during the course of the week. Jones was instrumental in the AFC Championship Game win over the Cincinnati Bengals. He’s undoubtedly the most important player on the defensive side of the ball for Kansas City, boasting 15.5 sacks during the course of the season. He’s someone that you want as close to 100% as possible ahead of the big game.

Cowboys return ace KaVontae Turpin questionable for Week 18; who is Plan B?

Turpin did not practice Friday with an illness; Peyton Hendershot is the only other Cowboy who’s returned either a punt or a kick this year. | From @ToddBrock24f7

The seasonal virus that has worked its way through the Cowboys locker room for nearly two months running could make things interesting right up to and including the final game of the regular season.

KaVontae Turpin popped up on Friday’s practice report, sitting out the day’s walkthrough with an illness. He is officially listed as questionable for the team’s Week 18 contest in Washington.

The rookie was voted to the Pro Bowl Games as the NFC’s return specialist, but if Turpin is still under the weather come Sunday, the Cowboys may have to go Plan B.

Problem is, who that would actually be isn’t immediately obvious.

Turpin is the only player to have returned a punt for Dallas this season, recording 290 yards on 25 returns. Of the team’s 20 kick returns, Turpin has 19 of them. Rookie tight end Peyton Hendershot ran one back for 18 yards in Week 10 against Green Bay.

Running back Tony Pollard is listed on the team’s official depth chart as the second-string return man behind Turpin, but with the almost-1,000-yard rusher playing such a vital role in the Cowboys offense and just returning from a thigh bruise, it’s difficult to imagine the team putting him in such a high-risk situation, especially with with the playoffs looming.

Looking back at last season doesn’t provide an obvious answer, either. In 2021, CeeDee Lamb led the team with 14 punt returns and Trevon Diggs had two; both also have to be considered too valuable to suddenly expose to that kind of risk for the first time all year. Cedrick Wilson (11 punt returns) is gone; Nahshon Wright returned one punt for zero yards last season.

Pollard was still handling kick returns in 2021, with the now-jettisoned Corey Clement and JaQuan Hardy spelling him.

So who on the current roster could get the call if Turpin can’t go?

C.J. Goodwin is already a special teams ace. So is Luke Gifford. Would John Fassel turn to a current ball-carrier with collegiate return experience? Like Malik Davis? He returned a handful of kicks at Florida. Noah Brown returned one, too, at Ohio State… back in 2014.

Or is there someone else on the practice squad that the coaching staff has that kind of trust in? Wide receiver Antonio Callaway has seven punt returns and eight kick returns on his pro resumé. Cornerback Kendall Sheffield handled six kick returns for Atlanta in 2019.

Heck, Micah Parsons has probably already put in his request.

Only time will tell if Turpin can be ready for Sunday’s kickoff. But the 26-year-old rookie can’t really be blamed for being a bit run down; between his spring season as MVP of the USFL and his electrifying full first season in the NFL, Turpin played an incredible 30 professional football games in the calendar year 2022.

The Cowboys are hoping to get just about five more out of him before a well-deserved break.

Seahawks hope Shelby Harris can pull through illness to play Thursday night

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Shelby Harris was inactive Week 14 with an illness but is hopeful to return Thursday night to face the 49ers.

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Shelby Harris was inactive Week 14 against the Carolina Panthers with an illness but the hope is that he is able to return in time for Thursday Night Football and the San Francisco 49ers.

During his Monday press conference, coach Pete Carroll said that Harris is still sick with what is assumed to be the same illness that has been circulating throughout the Seahawks locker room.

“Most all of the guys, it has been a 48-hour deal and he’s kind of at the tail end of it,” Carroll told reporters. “We’ve had a number of guys get sick and he’s one of the last guys getting it, hopefully, but we will see. I don’t know, each guy has been individually tasked with it.

“We will see if he can get through.”

Harris was listed as “did not participate” on the Seahawks’ estimated practice report for Monday.

Seahawks QB Geno Smith on the mend after battling illness

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith is recovering from the cold he was fighting in Week 13 when he faced off against the Rams in Los Angeles.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith was listed as a limited participant in practice on Thursday due to a shoulder injury but still made his weekly appearance at the podium to speak to the media.

Smith discussed his status last from Sunday when he faced off against the Rams while battling an illness he confirmed was “a little bit of a cold.”

“I’m feeling a little better, obviously, my voice isn’t there yet,” Smith told reporters. “I’m a still a little stuffy. When you get your adrenaline going and you are in the middle of the game, you rarely think about anything else, any illnesses, or any type of injuries, and things like that.”

Whether it’s some sort of virus or physical injury, by this point in the NFL season, many players are battling something each week.

“Everyone is playing out there a little nicked up and for me, which was a little bit of a cold, but I was able to fight through it,” Smith explained. “It’s good to be able to do that, but I’m trying to get back healthy and get all the way back to 100%.”

The Seahawks final injury report of the week indicating the game-day designations will be released later Friday afternoon following the team’s walkthrough.

Chiefs add DE Frank Clark to injury report with illness ahead of Week 13 vs. Bengals

#Chiefs DE Frank Clark is questionable to play against the #Bengals on Sunday after being added to the injury report with an illness.

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”OrH7xUHKQW-2394770-7498″]

The Kansas City Chiefs have made another change to their injury report ahead of the team’s Week 13 game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

After downgrading LG Joe Thuney to questionable on Saturday, the team has now added DE Frank Clark to the injury report with an illness. He’ll be listed as questionable to play on Sunday afternoon as a result.

It’s unclear if this illness is related to the stomach issues that he’s been dealing with persistently in recent years or whether he’s got whatever is going around this holiday season. Whatever the case, the issue is significant enough that it cast some questions on his status for the game.

Clark practiced all week long and there is a chance that he plays otherwise the team would have simply ruled him out. He’ll be evaluated by the training staff during pregame warmups.

If Clark is unable to play on Sunday, expect DE Malik Herring to be made active for the first time since Week 10. The team has six edge rushers on the roster, so they should be able to handle a last-minute absence for a player at the position.

Illness circulating Seahawks locker room ahead of Rams matchup

An undisclosed Illness has been circulating around the Seattle Seahawks locker room, with eight players sitting out Thursday ahead of Rams.

The Seattle Seahawks have a relatively light injury report heading into Week 13 against the Los Angeles Rams if you are only counting actual injuries. Numerous players, however, have been sidelined this week due to an undisclosed illness that appears to be circulating around the locker room.

On Wednesday, four players did not participate due to illness. By Thursday, eight Seahawks players were sitting out practice due to illness:

Guard Damien Lewis
Running back Travis Homer (also listed with knee)
Defensive end Quinton Jefferson
Linebacker Jordyn Brooks
Safety Josh Jones
Running back Tony Jones Jr.
Defensive end Myles Adams
Wide receiver Marquise Goodwin

Guard Phil Haynes and defensive tackle Al Woods had missed Wednesday’s session due to illness but both returned to full participation on Thursday.

The final injury report of the week will be released Friday after the walk-through so check back in the afternoon for the latest game-day designations.

Cowboys without Diggs, Gallup due to illness; Terence Steele also misses Thursday

Cold and flu season continues to wreak havoc as 2 key Cowboys miss practice again. Both participated virtually, hoping to be good by Sunday. | From @ToddBrock24f7

The Cowboys’ mini-bye following their Thanksgiving Day game was supposed to give everyone a chance to rest up and be feeling in top shape heading into December, a time of year when head coach Mike McCarthy has told the team they should be playing their best football.

Despite the extra time, though, two of the team’s key playmakers are still under the weather as the Cowboys prepare to host Indianapolis on Sunday night.

Wide receiver Michael Gallup and cornerback Trevon Diggs missed practice for the second day in a row, both listed on the Thursday practice report as having an “illness.”

Offensive lineman Terence Steele was also a DNP, though his official designation was for “non-injury/personal” reasons after being a full participant on Wednesday.

The team website reported that Steele’s absence was also due to illness.

In his press conference Thursday, McCarthy declined to get into specifics about what has gone through the locker room dating back to Week 11’s matchup in Minnesota.

At one point before the Nov. 24 game versus New York, as many as seven Cowboys defensive players were on the team’s sick list together.

“There are, I think, three different things we’ve been dealing with as far as what’s going around,” the coach told reporters at The Star.

Gallup and Diggs did go virtual on Thursday, in an attempt to stay up to speed in terms of the game plan and in hopes they’ll be feeling better by kickoff against the Colts in primetime.

The Cowboys had considered having the entire team go virtual on Monday, but scrapped that plan the day prior because they felt they had gotten the seasonal bug under control.

McCarthy had expressed hope that things would be back to normal for everyone by Wednesday, until Diggs and Gallup joined the long list of Cowboys who have been hit this cold and flu season.

It’s also worth noting that COVID cases are seeing a spike in many regions of the country, including North Texas. Though the coach wouldn’t give a label to what any of his players are experiencing, he did admit that the past two-plus years have made it somewhat easier for those who may be sick to attend meetings remotely.

“We’re playing the game of mathematics, and we’re just being very cautious,” McCarthy explained. “If a guy is not feeling well, we’re not just saying, ‘Come on in.’ He’s got to be evaluated. Going through the pandemic has obviously been an education for all of us, and I think that experience really serves us well.”
