The Illinois Fighting Illini (3-0) travel to meet the Nebraska Cornhuskers (3-0) Friday at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln for the Big Ten opener for both teams. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET (FOX). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s college football odds around the Illinois vs. Nebraska odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The Fighting Illini have fired out of the chute with 3 consecutive victories to start the season, including a 23-17 win over the previously ranked Kansas Jayhawks on Sept. 7 as a 5-point underdog.

Defense has been a major reason for the success of the Illini, as they’ve allowed just 26 total points, with 13.0 points per game allowed (PPG) against 2 FBS opponents. The Under is 3-0 in 3 games for Illinois.

The Cornhuskers are also playing good football under coach Matt Rhule, as they’ve finally turned the corner after numerous disappointing seasons. Nebraska is not only 3-0 straight up (SU), but also against the spread (ATS). The Under is 3-0, too, allowing just 8.5 PPG in 2 games against FBS foes.

Nebraska is No. 22 in the US LBM Coaches Poll, conducted by the American Football Coaches Association and USA TODAY Sports

Illinois at Nebraska picks and predictions

Prediction

Nebraska 24, Illinois 17

Moneyline

Nebraska (-350) will set you back 3 1/2 times your potential return, and that’s way too much risk for not nearly enough reward.

This should be a very good game, with plenty of defense, and somebody is going to come out of this with a 4-0 SU record.

PASS.

Against the spread

Play ILLINOIS +8.5 (-115), as it should be able to keep this within 1 score in a tough conference opener for both.

The Fighting Illini are looking to pay the Huskers back for a 20-7 loss in Champaign last Oct. 6. However, Illinois has won 3 of the past 4 meetings, including the past 2 trips to Lincoln. That includes a 41-23 win on Nov. 21, 2020, as a 17-point underdog. The Illini is 4-1 ATS in the past 5 meetings, too.

Over/Under

UNDER 42.5 (-105) is worth playing lightly based on the defense and trends for both of these teams to date.

Illinois has allowed just 151.7 passing yards, and 277.3 total yards per game (YPG), while conceding 8.7 points per game (PPG).

Nebraska has been slightly better on D, allowing just 70.3 rushing yards per game, 255.3 YPG and 6.7 PPG. The Illini have been rather mediocre on offense, and it should have trouble getting things going against the Huskers, especially on the road.

Illinois at Nebraska odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Illinois at Nebraska odds and lines, with college football expert picks and predictions.

The No. 18 Illinois Fighting Illini (6-3, 3-1 Big Ten) and Nebraska Cornhuskers (3-4, 2-2) meet Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET (ABC). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Illinois vs. Nebraska odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Illinois leads the Big Ten West with its 3-1 mark. The Illini lead the conference in scoring defense with 8.9 points allowed per game. They enter on a 5-game win streak and haven’t allowed more than 14 points in any single game along that span.

Nebraska was railroaded 43-37 as a 14-point underdog by the Purdue Boilermakers Oct. 15. The Cornhuskers coughed up 608 total yards. Nebraska ranks 14th in the Big Ten in all 3 defensive yardage categories (rushing, passing and total yards allowed per game). Among power-5 programs, only Colorado and North Carolina have yielded more total yards on average than UN’s 471.7.

Illinois at Nebraska picks and predictions

Prediction

Illinois 27, Nebraska 17

Moneyline

The visiting Illini (-320) are the lean in this game, but there is no need to tangle with all this juice for a short payout. PASS.

Against the spread

Illinois has won its last 2 games in this series straight up and covered its last 3 against Nebraska. The upstart Illini are 8-2 ATS since last Nov. 6.

Look for UI’s slightly better-than-average offense to find success against a porous Nebraska defense. The early-downs defense for these two Big Ten foes presents a major line of demarcation, and Illinois is on the right side of that line.

The UI defense excels near the line of scrimmage, in creating havoc, and in keeping opposing offenses behind the chains and scrambling.

The Illini offense may be a tad overrated, but it should still find success in coming up with solid drives more often than not. The UI ground game should be able to clock a lead late. Peg that lead as a double-digit one.

TAKE ILLINOIS -7.5 (-105).

Over/Under

The Under has gone 1-4-1 across Illinois’ last 6 games.

The expected game flow in this one, UI’s 56-44 run-pass mix, and perhaps a couple or 3 field goals put this total in a low-to-mid-40s range.

BACK THE UNDER 49.5 (-107).

Illinois at Nebraska: Three things to know

  1. After losing its first three games by a combined 72 points, Illinois (+5.5) claimed its first win of the season with a 23-20 victory at Rutgers last week. PK James McCourt‘s 47-yard field with 3 seconds left won it as the Illini rallied from a 20-10 deficit in the third quarter. Backup QB Isaiah Williams – starting in place of Brandon Peters, who has been out because of COVID-19 – threw for only 104 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions, but he ran for 192 yards with a TD on 31 attempts. RB Chase Brown added 131 yards on the ground.
  2. Nebraska (+2.5) also won its first game of the season last week, beating Penn State 30-23 at home. Making his starting debut, redshirt freshman QB Luke McCaffrey – whose brother is NFL star Christian McCaffrey – threw for 152 yards with a TD and a pick, while running for a team-high 67 yards with a score. The Cornhuskers led 27-6 at the half but had to hold on late as the defense came through, stopping two Nittany Lions drives inside Nebraska’s 15-yard line in the final 4 minutes.
  3. Nebraska has won the last 4 in the series, including last season when it overcame a 14-point, third-quarter deficit in a 42-38 win at Illinois. The ‘Huskers lead the all-time series 13-3-1, including 4-0 at home since joining the Big Ten.

Illinois at Nebraska: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Nebraska 30, Illinois 17

Money line (ML)

PASS. One has to wager more than six times their return on Nebraska (-625). It’s not worth the risk.

Against the spread (ATS)

Back ILLINOIS +14.5 (-110). McCaffrey gives life to a Nebraska offense that needed a boost; however, this is just his second start, so there’s still some “figuring it out” going on. Nebraska is 1-2 ATS; Illinois is 2-2.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 59.5 (-115) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1.5 times your usual wager. Illinois, 1-3 O/U, averages just 17.0 points per game and allows 34.3 PPG. Nebraska is 0-3 O/U, averaging 20.0 PPG and yielding 32.0 PPG.
