These schools last met on the hardwood Nov. 28, 2018 in Champaign with the Cyclones coming away with an 84-68 win. The Cyclones have won the past 2 meetings vs. the Illini with the Under going 2-0.

This will be the 1st time these 2 meet in an NCAA Tournament game.

Iowa State is making its first trip to the Sweet 16 since 2022 and 7th in program history. The Cyclones last advanced to the Elite 8 in 2000 — before that, they made their only other Elite 8 appearance in 1944.

Illinois pulled off an upset win at Minnesota two Saturdays back. And now – after a bye week –  the winners of two straight road games head to Iowa City. The Illini tote an improving defense with them. U of I has yielded just 4.4 yards per play over its last three contests.

The Hawkeyes defeated Minnesota, 27-22, Saturday. In a game that was close throughout, Iowa was outgained 409 yards to 277. The Hawkeyes were perhaps fortunate to score even 27 points, and they have now averaged just 16.2 points per game since Oct. 1.

Going by total yardage, both of these teams rank in the bottom-15 in FBS offensively.
