WATCH: Magic Johnson plays a game of HORSE with Conan O’Brien

An old clip of Magic taking on O’Brien in HORSE is making the rounds on the internet today.

How about a six-minute distraction from your day?

I’m not sure how this got missed at the time, but back in 2018 Michigan State legend Magic Johnson appeared on the Conan O’Brien show to play a game of HORSE with the late-night talk show host.

Sure, this clip is from 2018 and not technically news. But it’s still a really fun video and to be honest, we could all use a little bit of Magic Johnson-induced fun at the moment. Magic is appearing on Rob Lowe’s podcast “Literally” to talk about the Showtime Lakers era, so Conan is using this clip to help promote that.

Check it out.

Chris Paul loses to Allie Quigley in HORSE competition’s quarterfinals

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Chris Paul lost to the Chicago Sky’s Allie Quigley in the NBA’s HORSE challenge.

Though the sports world is currently on pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some of basketball’s best current and former players got together to see whose jumper could prevail in the NBA’s HORSE challenge.

The competition was televised Sunday on ESPN, and Oklahoma City Thunder star Chris Paul was one of the contestants. He went up against Chicago Sky guard Allie Quigley and lost the quarterfinal, with the game-clincher coming on a free throw bank shot; Quigley only finished with H-O-R.

With the win, Quigley advanced to the semifinals, and she will face Chicago Bulls guard Zach LaVine in the semifinals. The semifinals will be televised Thursday on ESPN.

Paul shot outside at his home in California, and Quigley shot outside in Illinois. With both players being some of basketball’s top shooters, Paul and Quigley opened the game with some makes.

The first letter wasn’t earned until Paul missed a corner jump shot from the right side. Paul then quickly picked up an “O” after Quigley banked in a shot from the left side while sitting down.

Paul got Quigley to pick up her first letter with a regular free throw. Still, Quigley maintained her lead.

She extended her lead when she sank a right-handed stepback from the right wing. Quigley put even more pressure on Paul when she made a bank shot from the right elbow. Paul missed, and he had H-O-R-S.

One of Paul’s most creative shots gave Quigley an H-O. He faced away from the hoop, and he held his left leg up in his hand. He then slightly turned to the hoop and made the shot with one hand.

Paul is a solid shooter, as he’s hit at a 36.2% clip from the 3-point line this season. Quigley is one of the WNBA’s top shooters, as she shot 44.2% from the 3-point line during the 2019 season. That was the third-highest mark of her career.

With the country still engaging in social distancing, having this competition was a cool way for fans to see some of their favorite players show their shooting strokes and shot creativity.

LaVine sweeps Pierce at NBA’s HORSE Competition while Billups advances

Former Boston Celtic Paul Pierce was swept by the Chicago Bulls’ Zach LaVine in the NBA’s HORSE Competition, while ex-Boston guard Chauncey Billups advanced.

It’s safe to say things could have gone better for the Truth.

Former Boston Celtic Paul Pierce was swept by Chicago Bulls shooting guard Zach LaVine in the ESPN broadcast of the NBA’s first-ever H-O-R-S-E Competition.

LaVine used an array of trick shots to keep the 10-time All-Star off balance from the start, the Celtic champion eliminated without getting a letter on his younger opponent.

Drawing on his athleticism, the UCLA product unleashed shots like touching the backboard, then making a reverse layup on the right that 42-year-old Pierce just didn’t have the hops to finish.

Ex-Celtics guard Chauncey Billups upset current Atlanta Hawk Trae Young however, coming from behind a 3-letter lead built by Young early.

While neither was exactly riveting entertainment, it’d be a lie to say the laggy, often-grainy production was all bad television despite the slow pace.

The defeat of Chris Paul by Allie Quigley was pretty compelling, and the other matches all had moments.

For now, Tamika Catchings, Paul, Young, and Pierce “go home” (a technicality, as they were already there) while Quigley, LaVine, Billups and Mike Conley advance to the semifinals.

Conley will face Billups, and Quigley LaVine in the Semifinals, which, along with the Finals, will be broadcast by ESPN and the ESPN app on Tuesday at 9pm ET.

NBA fans quickly realized that the HORSE Challenge was just terrible TV

The thought was nice.

Well, it was worth a try, I guess.

With the sports world at a complete standstill amid the coronavirus pandemic, the NBA, WNBA and ESPN had the idea of getting star players (from past and present) to compete in a HORSE tournament for charity.

The HORSE Challenge would take place at each player’s respective courts at their homes and driveways. The footage would be shot with cellphones and sent to ESPN for editing a few days later.

We’re all desperate for sports, so the idea was cool in theory. Fans were actually excited about it.

But when it came time to see the actual broadcast on Sunday, the HORSE Challenge was a huge letdown with laughably poor video quality. The first 30-plus minutes were Trae Young and Chauncey Billups in a battle of pixelated video.

NBA fans had plenty of jokes.

And that’s not all: ESPN plans to stretch the HORSE Challenge out to a multi-day tournament. Just end it now.

Ex-Celtics Pierce, Billups tied for 5th-best odds to win HORSE tourney

Online bookmakers see former Boston Celtics Paul Pierce and Chauncey Billups as fifth-most likely to win today’s HORSE tournament.

The NBA and ESPN will air first round matchups of the televised H-O-R-S-E tournament today, Sunday April 12th at 7pm ET.

Fans will be able to watch the two hour, single-elimination shooting contest on ESPN and on the ESPN app, with the semifinals and finals airing on the 15th at 9pm via the same outlets.

The event will feature WNBA stars Allie Quigley and Tamika Catchings, retired Celtics alumni Paul Pierce and Chauncey Billups, and current NBAers Chris Paul, Mike Conley, Trae Young and Zach LaVine.

Online bookmakers are rating former Celtics Pierce and Billups as having a tie for fifth-best odds to win the contest, and current Atlanta Hawk Young the best odds overall.

Individual performances will be filmed at the home of each respective player which may feature indoor or outdoor courts, with each player declaring their shot ahead of the attempt for it to count — no dunking allowed.

Missed shots on the match will give a player one of the letters of “HORSE” — thus the name — with all five letters forcing a loss.

Chris Paul will join Trae Young for televised game of H-O-R-S-E

Based on his tweets, Trae Young is excited to be competing against Chris Paul and Zach LaVine in a televised H-O-R-S-E competition.

With the NBA endorsing and promoting an NBA 2K20 matchup featuring its players, it became abundantly clear that the league wanted to do what it could to provide entertainment to its fans during its extended suspension of play.

Last week, rumors began circulating that, along with the NBPA, the league was exploring the viability of having a televised H-O-R-S-E competition featuring some of its stars and, potentially, WNBA stars, as well.

The main obstacle in the way of putting the competition together is the fact that the league has suspended team gatherings and practice facility usage. Any competitions would need to be contested remotely, which essentially meant that only players who had access to a private hoop could participate. That’s not something that every NBA player has.

Fortunately, Chris Paul does.

On Wednesday, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the NBA has come to a tentative agreement with Paul, the Hawks’ Trae Young and the Bulls’ Zach LaVine wherein the three would compete in a televised match of H-O-R-S-E.

According to the Wojnarowski report, the competition is also expected to feature participants from the WNBA, as well as some recent NBA alumni.

The NBA and ESPN are finalizing plans to televise a H-O-R-S-E shooting competition, with stars Chris Paul of Oklahoma City, Trae Young of Atlanta and Zach LaVine of Chicago among those expected to participate, sources told ESPN on Wednesday…

Players would be filmed competing at home locations — on indoor or outdoor courts — and compete shot for shot in the traditional playground game, sources said.

At this time, it is not known when the competition will take place or when it will be televised, but it is likely to be prerecorded.

Deer hunter arrested after family’s pet horse is shot

An arrest has been made in the case involving a Virginia deer hunter suspected of shooting a family’s pet horse.

An arrest has been made in the case involving a Virginia deer hunter suspected of shooting a family’s pet horse.

Jeffrey Mayo, of Mineral, was charged with reckless handling of a firearm and discharging a firearm within 100 yards of an occupied dwelling, the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday.

“It was determined through the investigation that the suspect was hunting and had fired three shots at a deer while it was running,” the agency stated in a news release.

ABC 8 News reports that the 24-year-old quarter horse, named Penny, suffered wounds to her chest and lung during the Nov. 27 incident in Ashland.

Alexander Gaudino, Penny’s caretaker, said that after seeing the horse bleeding from her side he initially thought she had been injured by barbed wire. “We walked over there and she wouldn’t move; we were in complete shock,” Gaudino said.

A GoFundMe page was created two days later, with Kim Boyd Gaudino writing, “Our family pet of 20 years was shot in the yard the night before Thanksgiving. We are asking for help with medical expenses.”

On Nov. 30 the post was updated to reveal that Penny was “fighting to live” but the next day Penny was said to be “doing amazing well.”

Penny, who received care from the family’s veterinarian, has since recovered.

The investigation was conducted in conjunction with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
