Costa Rica vs. Honduras: How to watch Copa America playoff, live stream

The winner moves on to the 2024 Copa America, while the loser is eliminated

Costa Rica will face Honduras on Saturday with a spot at the Copa América on the line.

The winner of the one-game playoff at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas will advance to the Copa América this summer, while the loser is eliminated.

Honduras nearly qualified directly to the Copa América, but fell to Mexico on penalties in a wild Nations League quarterfinal tie in November.

Costa Rica did not come nearly as close in its quarterfinal, as it was hammered 6-1 on aggregate by Panama.

Marathon defender wrecks two players at once with insane tackle

Andre Orellana at least got his money’s worth

Andre Orellana at least got his money’s worth.

The CD Marathón defender was sent off late in Sunday’s Honduras league defeat to Olimpia, as his flying karate kick took out not one, but two players from his team’s rivals.

Just minutes after Kevin López scored what would prove to be the game’s only goal, Orellana charged at two Olimpia players and flew high off the ground, dangerously exposing his studs before clearing out both Carlos Pineda and German Mejia.

The announcers were clearly horrified. The referee could hardly pull his red card out fast enough.

Orellana, who ironically enough is on loan at Marathón from Olimpia, apologized for his tackle after the game.

“The truth is I was wrong and I apologize to everyone, you are human and you learn from mistakes,” he told DIEZ.

“I think it was a play where the momentum and courage for the game overcame me, it is not correct at all.

“[Olimpia midfielder] Germán Mejía told me that it was OK, that he loves me and that it was part of the game. He said I should not lose my DNA and that I should continue working, that I have a lot to continue growing.”

He added: “This is part of football, all that remains for me is to correct and know how to control each impulse. I have to know how to have a balance. I tell you that this will not happen again.”

U.S. U-17 star Keyrol Figueroa explains why he picked the United States

His father is an all-time Honduras great, but the teenager has opted for the U.S.

Keyrol Figueroa has spoken out about his decision to represent the United States amid a standout CONCACAF U-17 Championship performance.

Figueroa is the co-leading scorer at the tournament with six goals, scoring a brace earlier this week as the U.S. defeated Guatemala 5-3 to clinch a spot at the U-17 World Cup later this year.

There has been plenty of attention of late around Figueroa, who is the son of former Honduras great Maynor Figueroa.

Keyrol Figueroa was born in Honduras but moved to England at a young age when his father transferred to Wigan — then in the Premier League. Keyrol would eventually return to England when he signed with Liverpool, where he currently plays for the club’s U-18 side.

Though his father has the most caps in Honduras history with 181 and he’s also eligible to represent England, Keyrol has opted to represent the United States at international level.

In a video posted on U.S. Soccer’s Twitter, he explained that having family all across the United States influenced his decision.

“I was questioning which team I was going to represent,” he said. “But what made me pick the U.S. is the fact that all my family are spread across the U.S. I think every little person represents me. So I thought the U.S. was a perfect choice. I want to represent them and make them proud. I want to make everyone close to me proud because I think it’s not just my dream, it grew into everybody’s dream.”

Maynor Figueroa only recently retired after he played in MLS from 2015 to 2021 with Colorado, FC Dallas and Houston. He also played for Honduras in the most recent World Cup qualifying cycle, starting both games against the USMNT.

Keyrol Figueroa said that his father has taught him plenty about being a striker, despite spending his career as a defender.

“He was a defender, and he knew what he hated about strikers that he played against,” the 16-year-old said. “So he’d always teach me. He taught me how to beat players one-v-one, or even where to put [the ball] in the back of the net. Because sometimes when I was younger, I used to love to kick the ball hard, but he actually taught me how to compose myself and slow myself down and where to put it.”

Canada loses to Honduras in Nations League amid absurd conditions

Things went extremely CONCACAF for Canada

Canada slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Honduras in CONCACAF Nations League play Monday night, and we do mean slipped.

Torrential rain soaked the pitch at the Estadio Olímpico Metropolitano, and if anything the downpour got stronger as the match went on. Kevin Lopez and Kervin Arriaga struck for Honduras, and Jonathan David’s late goal (scored with standing water visible elsewhere on the field) didn’t spark a comeback. Alistair Johnston got a second yellow card deep into second-half stoppage time, all while Canada Soccer says fans got onto the pitch as well.

“It’s like trying to put a Formula 1 car on an off-roading track,” coach John Herdman told Canada Soccer’s official Twitter account after the match. “Every time we looked to play in certain areas, that we could get our best players moving, [the ball] would either hold up or slide off the pitch.”

“This is CONCACAF,” said Herdman. “Sometimes you’ve just got to grind a result out, and we didn’t do that tonight.”

Herdman also addressed security issues in San Pedro Sula, as multiple fans ran onto the field during the game (including one who got a selfie with a bemused Alphonso Davies).

“I just worry about the players’ safety,” said Herdman. That’s a big concern for me, when you see those players on the field, they’re putting their careers on the line. And fans, not once, not twice, not four times, maybe five times, are on the field doing what they want.” Herdman admitted that Canada “had our fans running on the pitch in Edmonton (after clinching a World Cup spot in qualifying), so we can’t complain about that.”

The game included a particularly CONCACAF-y ending, with the benches from both teams engaging in a shoving match at full time.

Honduras is now three points clear of Canada in Group C, though Canada has two games left to play while los Catrachos have just one, a visit to Canada in March 2023.

“I couldn’t believe you’re going out on the pitch with $80 million players, and they’re allowed to play in puddles” said Herdman when asked about whether the game should have been postponed. “But, it’s football. It’s CONCACAF. You’ve got to get on it.”
