Wisconsin announces their two ‘Athletes of the Year’

Wisconsin announced their two ‘Athletes of the Year’ earlier today

When you think of Wisconsin athletics, the first things that come to mind include a packed Camp Randall Stadium, an old-school style of football, battles at the Kohl Center and a general excellence across a large variety of sports.

The first thought isn’t normally about the men’s and women’s hockey teams, though the two programs are some of the school and the country’s best.

Earlier today, Wisconsin announced their ‘Athletes of the Year’ are former men’s hockey star and current Montreal Canadien Cole Caufield and women’s hockey star Daryl Watts.

The pair will now serve as Wisconsin’s nominees for the Big Ten Conference Athlete of the Year award.

The list of accolades for both skaters is extremely long, though highlights include Caufield’s 2021 Hobey Baker Memorial Award for the nation’s top men’s hockey player and Watts’ first-team All-America honors and National Championship-winning goal.

Oh, and Caufield has done quite a bit since stepping foot on NHL ice.

Notre Dame adds defenseman Chase Blackmun

Notre Dame hockey has added yet another grad-transfer for 2021-22.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Notre Dame hockey head coach Jeff Jackson has announced the addition of graduate transfer Chase Blackmun for the 2021-22 season. A defenseman, Blackmun played his first three seasons at UMass Lowell.

“Chase is an experienced college defenseman with some offensive upside,” Jackson stated. “His mobility and instincts will make him a valuable asset on both sides of the puck. He should compete to be in our top four defensemen immediately.”

Blackmun has played 85 career games while scoring 16 goals and adding 26 assists for 42 points.

In 2020-21 Blackmun skated in 19 of Lowell’s 20 games, notching six goals and five assists for 11 points. His six goals were the most by a defenseman on the team, with two of the goals coming on the power play.

During the 2019-20 season, Blackmun had a career-high 17 points on five goals and 12 assists, leading all River Hawk defensemen in scoring while playing all 34 games. He notched two game-winning goals, including the overtime winner against Penn State in the Turkey Leg Classic Championship Game at the Tsongas Center (November 30).

As a freshman in 2018-19, the Hudson, Wisconsin native played in 32 of 37 games and posted 14 points on five goals and nine assists to go along with a +9 plus/minus rating. His 14 points ranked second-most among River Hawk rookies and was the third highest total among Hockey East rookie blueliners. Seven of his nine assists came on the power play. He earned Hockey East Rookie of the Week honors on Feb. 25 after a four-point (2g, 2a) series versus Merrimack. Blackmun dressed in the last 28 contests for the River Hawks.

Prior to joining Lowell, Blackmun skated for the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders (USHL) during the 2017-18 season. A two-time Hockey East All-Academic Team honoree, he also won a Wisconsin state championship with Hudson High School during his senior season.

Canadian Teams Face Long Odds To End Stanley Cup Title Drought

Alice Cooper debuts new Red Wings-inspired track, and it’s actually not bad

To Alice Cooper, no sport resembles rock and roll more than hockey.

Alice Cooper is debuting a new song inspired by the Detroit Red Wings fittingly titled, “Go Wings Go,” which is getting a national premiere when Detroit takes on the Tampa Bay Lightning Sunday afternoon on NBC.

Cooper has been a hockey buff since he was a young boy growing up in Detroit. To him, no sport resembles rock and roll more than hockey.

Cooper, a longtime resident of Arizona, has gone to countless Coyotes games every year. But while he’s rooted for the Coyotes, he grew up a Red Wings fan.

“I grew up in Hockeytown and when I was ‘this tall,’ my dad would take me to see Gordie Howe and Terry Sawchuk and Ted Lindsay and those guys,” Cooper said back in 2012. “Those were rough guys; there was blood on the ice every night.”

Take a look at a sneak peek of Cooper’s new track, which is actually quite catchy, at least to this Red Wings fan.

The reaction, as expected, was mixed. Some fans loved it…

While others weren’t a fan, which could have something to do with the fact it’s a song about the Red Wings.

While it might feel a little random that Cooper debuted a Red Wings-themed song, remember that, to him, hockey is the rock and roll of sports.

Notre Dame adds All-American goaltender

The Irish added a good one today

The following release is courtesy of Notre Dame athletics:

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Notre Dame hockey head coach Jeff Jackson has announced the addition of graduate transfer goaltender Matthew Galajda for the 2021-22 season. The 2018 First Team All-American played his first three seasons at Cornell.

“We’re excited to add Matthew to our program,” Jackson said. “He has a very impressive resume both academically and athletically from his career at Cornell and not only is he a great goaltender but also a tremendous young man. He’s a great fit for Notre Dame and for our team culture.”

For his career, Galajda boasts a 60-15-9 record to go along with a .930 save percentage and a 1.64 goals against average.

As a freshman in 2017-18, he led the nation with a 1.51 goals against average — the lowest in Division I since UMass-Lowell’s Connor Hellebuyck’s mark of 1.37 (2012-13). He posted a 21-5-2 record to lead the nation in victories by a freshman and his .939 save percentage ranked third in the country. He became the first freshman to ever be named among 10 finalists for Hobey Baker Memorial Award, given annually to the best player in all of college hockey. Former Notre Dame captain nets first career NHL goal

Props to Steven Fogarty for his first NHL goal!

Former Notre Dame hockey star Steven Fogarty played for the Fighting Irish from the 2012-13 season through 2015-16 and captained the team for his final two years.

Since graduating from Notre Dame, Fogarty played in the New York Rangers system and skated in 18 games over the past three seasons.  Fogarty signed a free-agent deal with the Buffalo Sabres last fall and was recently brought up to the big-squad.

On Wednesday night with the Sabres taking on the Philadelphia Flyers, Fogarty did something he never had previously in his NFL career:

Scored a goal.

Check it out below:

It’s been a forgettable season for the Sabres who entered play Wednesday just 6-23-5, but it was a memorable moment for the former Notre Dame star.
