Notre Dame falls late to Ohio State in series finale

Despite outplaying Ohio State for five periods this weekend, Notre Dame took just one of two games after a third period collapse Sunday.

Notre Dame’s hockey was 20 minutes from a weekend sweep of Ohio State and four minutes into Sunday’s third period appeared to be extending their lead to 3-1 on the Buckeyes.

Charlie Raith’s would-be goal was called off however due to a hit from behind delivered Notre Dame’s Ryder Rolston.

Quinn Preston then answered with the game-tying goal for Ohio State moments later before netting another goal to give the Buckeyes the lead just 45 seconds later.

It’s a disappointing end to a weekend where the Irish appeared in control for five of six periods but everything changed when Raith’s goal was called off.

Notre Dame falls to 4-4-0 on the year and return to action Saturday night when they host Michigan State in a game that can be seen on NBCSN.

Notre Dame shuts out Ohio State

Notre Dame shutout Ohio State to open the weekend series with the 14th ranked Buckeyes on Saturday.

The 15th ranked Notre Dame hockey team was a rude host to No. 14 Ohio State on Saturday night as the Irish skated their way to a 3-0 victory in the opener of the two game series.

Dylan St. Cyr stopped all 20 Buckeyes shots to pitch the shutout in net while a Graham Slaggert goal gave the Irish the only goal they’d need just before the midway point of the second period.

After St. Cyr turned away three shots on a Buckeyes power play in the third, Michael Graham found the back of the net to increase the Notre Dame lead to 2-0 with under 13:00 to play in the final frame.

Alex Steeves added his third goal in four games to extend the Notre Dame lead to 3-0, which would end up being the final score.

The shutout was the third in the career of St. Cyr and Michael Graham’s goal Saturday made him the 12th different Fighting Irish player to score so far this season.

The Irish improve to 4-3-0 on the season while Ohio State falls to 2-3-0.  The two meet again late Sunday afternoon for the series finale.  The puck drops at 5 p.m. ET and can be seen live on NBC Sports Net.

Notre Dame stuns Arizona State with epic comeback

Notre Dame hockey bouned back to .500 on Friday after stunning Arizona State. See the story and highlights here. College hockey.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Facing a 4-2 deficit midway through the third period, goals by Jake Pivonka, Solag Bakich and then Nick Leivermann with five seconds left in the third lifted No. 13 Notre Dame to a 5-4 comeback victory over No. 20 Arizona State on Friday night at the Compton Family Ice Arena. It was Leivermann’s first career game-winning goal.

The back-and-forth affair included a 2-0 Fighting Irish lead early in the first period and then four consecutive Arizona State goals, including three in the middle frame, to set the stage for the Notre Dame comeback.

Pivonka finished with a goal and an assist and Max Ellis added a pair of assists while Alex Steeves and Landon Slaggert (first of his career) also scored for Notre Dame. Arizona State’s Matthew Kopperud had two goals and an assist to pace the Sun Devils.

Notre Dame outshot Arizona State, 47-37, with Dylan St. Cyr making 33 saves in the win and ASU’s Cole Brady stopping 42 shots.

Arizona State was 1-for-4 on the power play, while Notre Dame was 0-for-1.

How It Happened
The Irish jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 5:10 of the first period when Alex Steeves notched his second goal of the season. He blocked a shot at the defensive blue line and skated into Arizona State’s zone on a two-on-one with Colin Theisen, burying his chance with ASU taking away the pass.

Just 13 seconds later, Landon Slaggert scored his first career goal. Following the Steeves goal, Trevor Janicke won the faceoff back to Nate Clurman, who flipped the puck into the offensive zone. Slaggert deflected the bouncing puck and batted it from midair past Cole Brady from just outside the goal crease.

Notre Dame killed off back-to-back Arizona State power plays later in the first, including 1:28 of a 5-on-3.

St. Cyr then flashed his right pad to stop Benji Eckerle with just under seven minutes remaining in the first. But Jordan Sandhu was able to score at 19:05 to make it a 2-1 game after the first 20 minutes of play.

Notre Dame killed off an Arizona State power play to start the second and just after returning to full strength, Theisen beat Brady but his shot rang off the post.

The Sun Devils were able to tie it up, 2-2, when Sandhu found Kopperud at the back post at 12:51 of the second period. Kopperud added a power-play goal at 17:24 of the second for Arizona State’s first lead of the night. Exactly one minute later, Ryan O’Reilly made it a 4-2 game, which is how the second period would end.

Pivonka took the rebound off a Stasney shot and fired the puck on goal. Arizona State netminder Cole Brady reached for the save, but Pivonka grabbed his own rebound and fired home his first of the season to get the Irish within one.

With just over seven and a half minutes left on the clock, Pivonka sent the puck across the crease to find sophomore Solag Bakich, who buried it on the short side to knot the game at 4-4.

With time winding down in the third, Leivermann held a Sun Devil clearing attempt at the blue line. He moved toward the high slot and got a shot off, but it was blocked. The puck fell back to Leivermann, whose second attempt sent the Irish home with a victory.

Notre Dame falls in hockey to Arizona State

Notre Dame’s hockey team fell to 2-3 on the season as they simply couldn’t keep Arizona State from lighting the lamp Thursday night.

Fresh off a weekend sweep at previously No. 3 Michigan, Notre Dame welcomed No. 20 Arizona State to campus for the first of a two-game series on Thursday night.

The Irish dropped the opener of the series to the Sun Devils, 6-3, and fell to 2-3 on the young season.

Trevor Janicke, Graham Slaggert, and Nate Clurman all scored goals for the Irish but it was a tough night for the netminding as Notre Dame allowed six goals on just 28 Arizona State shots.

Ryan O’Reilly and Matthew Kopperud got it started earlier for Arizona State, both scoring in the first 1:55 of the game.

Notre Dame answered just over 10 minutes later to cut the deficit to one but a quick answer by Arizona State’s Jax Murray again made it a two-goal advantage just 55 seconds later.

Slaggert then found the back of the net for the Irish in the closing moments of the first period to again cut the Arizona State lead to 3-2.

Just under seven minutes into the second period Michael Mancinelli scored yet another goal for Arizona State to make it 4-2 before Clurman netted his goal six minutes later to again cut the Sun Devils lead to one.

Kopperud scored his second goal of the night just over nine minutes into the third and this time Notre Dame was unable to respond, eventually allowing an empty-net goal for the final 6-3 score.

Notre Dame and Arizona State wrap-up their two-game series Friday night at Compton Ice Arena as the puck drops at 7 p.m. ET and can be seen on NBCSN.

Notre Dame releases attendances policies for basketball and hockey

Notre Dame has announced it’s the attendance policy for basketball and hockey this winter and if you don’t know someone, you won’t be getting in

How quickly it seems to have snuck up on us all, but basketball season is right around the corner as both Notre Dame’s men’s and women’s teams have been preparing for a season that both hope to return them to the NCAA Tournament.

With those and hockey in mind, the University of Notre Dame today released their guidelines for attendance during the 2020-21 seasons.

They were made in conjunction with the campus, local, and conference health and safety guidelines.

The basketball and hockey seasons will begin with the only fans in attendance being guests of the student-athletes and coaches from both participating teams.

No other students, no other faculty or staff will be allowed to purchase tickets like was the case for football.

This is all being done while the campus is keeping with their masks and distancing policies for all guests.

Per the University release as well, as the seasons progress, the University, the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Big Ten Conference will continue to monitor the conditions and evaluate the possibility of welcoming additional audiences. If Notre Dame decides to extend invitations beyond the campus community, season ticket members will receive priority to purchase single-game tickets.

Notre Dame men’s basketball tips off Saturday night at No. 13 Michigan State while the Irish open their home schedule on December 2 by welcoming Western Michigan.

The women’s basketball team is set to start their season against Ohio on Friday before opening their home slate by welcoming Georgia Tech on December 13.

The hockey team returns to action with two games at Michigan this weekend before their first home series of the year December 3 and 4 against Arizona State.

We want to thank Commissioner Warren and the league’s head coaches and administrators for helping us find a safe way to return.”

NHL to Wrap up Season With 24-Team Playoff

NHL to Wrap up Season With 24-Team Playoff The news was announced by
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman. The NHL suspended the
2019-20 season on March 12. According to ‘USA Today,’
the top 12 teams in both the Western
and Eastern Conferences have qualified. Seven squads whose records placed them at the
bottom of the standings are done for the year. In both conferences, the top four teams
automatically head to the next round. To advance, the rest of the
qualifying teams will have to play. ‘USA Today’ adds that proposals see a best-of-five series determining who gets past the opening round. The top four squads will play
in-conference round-robin games
to decide postseason rankings. In a vote late last week, the new
schedule was approved by the
NHL Players’ Association. Bettman adds that two cities will host
East and West playoff games,
respectively. Among the areas being considered for
the playoffs are Vancouver, Los Angeles,
Pittsburgh and Toronto.
