This Malcolm Roach play has to be a first in NFL history

This has to be a first, right?

During the Denver Broncos‘ game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, defensive lineman Malcolm Roach lost his helmet during a play.

Typically that wouldn’t be a problem, he could simply retrieve it and put it back on before the next play. In this particular instance, however, the Raiders were rushing up to the line to snap the ball so they could spike it and stop the clock. Roach couldn’t go back across the line to retrieve his helmet and risk being penalized for lining up offsides at the snap.

So the lineman waited at the line while a teammate — it appears to be linebacker Justin Strnad — grabbed his helmet and ran back across the line. Strnad tossed the helmet to Roach and he got it on just before the snap.

Vic Lombardi of AltitudeTV captured the moment and shared it on his Twitter/X page:

Losing his helmet was incidental and he got it back on before play resumed, so Roach was not penalized for the incident. Roach finished the day with three tackles and a sack in a 29-19 win.

Saints share update on Chris Olave injury vs. Panthers

The Saints issued a positive health update on Chris Olave after he sustained a concussion in a big hit against the Panthers:

New Orleans Saints wide receiver Chris Olave has movement in his extremities and is being evaluated at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center after being diagnosed with a concussion against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, the team announced on social media.

Olave briefly lost consciousness on the field after a big hit from Panthers safety Xavier Woods, who drew a foul for unnecessary roughness on the  play. He was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the game.

This would be the fourth concussion in a series of brain injuries for Olave. The young pro has switched helmets and considered wearing a Guardian cap into games to better protect himself, but it’s something that must be handled seriously. We may be entering the point where his NFL future should be contemplated. For now, though, here’s to a full recovery.

Chiefs gave Joe Biden a helmet during their White House visit

Andy Reid and Clark Hunt presented President Joe Biden with a #Chiefs helmet during their visit to the White House on Friday. | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chief officially had their second-consecutive White House visit as Super Bowl champions on Friday, May 31st.

After a speech from President Joe Biden congratulating the team for their Super Bowl LVIII victory, there was an emphasis to remember the many affected by the parade shooting in Kansas City.

The president called upon Travis Kelce to have an opportunity to finally address the nation after the All-Pro tight end was interrupted by Patrick Mahomes during last year’s ceremony.

“My fellow Americans, it’s nice to see you all again,” Kelce started. “I’m not going to lie, President Biden. They told me if I came up here, I was going to get tased, so I’m going back to my spot.”

Team owner Clark Hunt and head coach Andy Reid would present President Biden with a Chiefs helmet instead of a jersey, which they had already given him last year. At the end of the ceremony, with encouragement from Kansas City’s players at the podium, President Biden took time to try on the helmet, officially making him a team member.

The ceremony seemed to be fun for the Chiefs, who continue to raise the bar on their Super Bowl celebrations. A three-peat has been the talk of the offseason and would present Kansas City’s players another reason to visit the White House in 2025.

NFL will allow all teams to have three different helmets starting in 2025

The Detroit Lions will unveil their new uniforms next week, and another new helmet design could be on the way too

Last year, the Detroit Lions debuted their blue helmets to wildly favorable reviews. It was the first time the team had an alternate helmet design since playing with the blank silver ones, which are the same helmet but without any logos or stripes.

Now the Lions, as well as all other NFL teams, can add another helmet design into the mix. The NFL approved a third game-eligible helmet design with some restrictions on usage.

Like the alternate blue helmets for the Lions last year, the new design must match the team’s historical color scheme if worn with the standard uniform combinations. In other words, if the Lions adopt a black helmet design for their third style, it may only be worn with the color rush (the grey jerseys/pants) or a specific alternate uniform (like Detroit’s all-white combination). No mixing and matching

Perhaps someday if the NFL allows three helmets …

The NFL recently loosened up its one-helmet rule, allowing teams to have two. This has led teams to adopt alternate helmets, or in the case of the Seattle Seahawks, to complete their iconic throwback looks.

Although the Seahawks are set with their navy helmet for their usual uniforms and the silver helmets for throwbacks, this won’t stop creatives from coming up with fun concepts. Such as the one below, an all-white alternate helmet.

Now normally, I am not much of a fan of an all-white uniform. But these do look pretty fresh.

Perhaps what makes these look fine is the fact the Seahawks uniforms have plenty of blue still in the white to break it up. There is still variation and contrast, and the logo helps the helmet.

However, while these do look fantastic, I’m hard-pressed to say the Seahawks should scrap the throwback look for a white alternate helmet.

Still, these do look great. Perhaps someday if the NFL allows three helmets …

LOOK: Las Vegas Sphere lit as Chiefs helmet ahead of Super Bowl LVIII

The Las Vegas Sphere was lit to resemble a #Chiefs helmet ahead of Kansas City’s matchup against the #49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.

Las Vegas is known for its wide array of entertainment options as an oasis in the Nevada desert, but with the Kansas City Chiefs in town to face the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII, it has become clear that the championship matchup on February 11 is the main attraction.

The vaunted Sphere, a round edifice located in the heart of Paradise, Nevada near the strip in Sin City, was seen lit up as a Chiefs helmet ahead of Kansas City’s highly-anticipated contest against San Francisco

This image is sure to enrage Las Vegas Raiders fans and may serve to add fuel to the ever-hot fire of rivalry between their underachieving team and the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs.

While the Sphere’s lighting arrangement changes with regularity, Kansas City’s dominance in Las Vegas is unwavering. The Chiefs have never lost a game at Allegiant Stadium and will look to add to their perfect record when they face the 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes explains his broken helmet situation vs. Dolphins

Kansas City #Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes explains the situation with his broken helmet against the Miami #Dolphins

The frigid cold didn’t hamper the Kansas City Chiefs offense as they found a groove in front of the faithful Arrowhead Stadium crowd. The chill in the air had the Miami Dolphins frozen and broken offensively, as the latter had a unique effect on a member of the Chiefs.

The competitive mindset of Patrick Mahomes has shown its face for better and worse this season as another chapter was added to his legacy on Saturday. Mahomes explained to reporters after the game for the broken helmet he suffered after a red zone scramble.

“I’m sure it had to do with it being really cold,” Mahomes said. “I didn’t know what had happened at the moment. But I got in the huddle, and everybody was telling me I was like, I got y’all, but I’m not coming out the game. We could figure out on the sidelines and hoping we scored obviously, we didn’t get in the endzone. But yeah, it was a first for me.”

Mahomes would discuss the complicated process on the sidelines to find a suitable replacement helmet. He was shown on television visibly frustrated while trying on several helmets.

“They have a backup out there; we’ll talk about where we store the backup because it was frozen,” Mahomes explained. “So when I tried to put it on, it was completely frozen. I couldn’t get it on. I think we got a picture of it; it didn’t look great, but we were able to adjust it on the sideline, get it warmed up a little bit, and get rolling from there.”

The new helmet replacement worked well the rest of the game as the Chiefs successfully put away Miami to punch their ticket to the divisional round next week.

Twitter reacts to Patrick Mahomes’ broken helmet after tough run vs. Dolphins

Twitter went crazy after #Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes broke his helmet on a gritty run against the #Dolphins.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ playoff matchup against the Miami Dolphins has been full of intrigue. Frigid conditions and a frozen mustache stole the show early in the game, but Patrick Mahomes gave fans something else to talk about early in the second quarter as he drove the Chiefs downfield.

Mahomes ran the ball on a broken red zone play that put Kansas City into scoring position and shoved a defender before hitting the turf near the end zone.

When he made contact with the Dolphins defender, his helmet broke, sending a large piece of plastic onto the frozen playing surface. The reigning MVP played with the broken helmet before officials eventually stopped the action to let the Chiefs signal-caller swap out his gear.

Users on social media went crazy for this second-quarter-sequence and shared their thoughts about what transpired.

Chiefs TE Travis Kelce addresses sideline helmet throw vs. Raiders

#Chiefs TE Travis Kelce addressed his sideline helmet throw incident against the #Raiders on his “New Heights” podcast.

Tempers flared on the Kansas City Chiefs sideline during their Christmas day loss to the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 16. Star tight end Travis Kelce was seen throwing his helmet during a particularly frustrating moment in the game that stood out among other signs of discontent on Kansas City’s bench.

Kelce addressed the helmet-toss incident on his New Heights podcast with his brother, fellow NFL veteran Jason Kelce. The All-Pro pass catcher didn’t make any excuses for his behavior and was apologetic in responding to Jason’s question about what happened.

“I didn’t go back out there and play good,” Travis explained. “He [head coach Andy Reid] wanted to see the fire in me, and I reacted in a bad way. He wanted to get the best out of me. Right now, I’m not playing my best football… As a leader on this team, that’s not how you switch momentum.”

Fans will certainly appreciate Travis’ frustration with the Chiefs’ performance against the Raiders on Monday, and his contrite response to the incident on the sideline.

With just two weeks of the 2023 regular season remaining, the time for Kansas City and Travis Kelce to clean up their acts is now, lest they lose out and squander their opportunity to compete in January’s playoffs.

Broncos will wear alternate white helmet on Christmas Eve

The Broncos will wear their alternate “snow-capped” white helmet against the Patriots on Christmas Eve.

The weather forecast is calling for a white Christmas in Denver this year, and fittingly, the Broncos are breaking out their “snow-capped” alternate helmets for a festive Christmas Eve showdown with the Patriots in Week 16.

Denver will wear its orange Color Rush uniform and a white alternate helmet against New England on Sunday night. The game will mark the third time the Broncos have worn an alternate uniform in 2023.

Denver previously wore its new white helmet in Week 5 against the New York Jets, a 31-21 loss. The Broncos then wore an all-blue alternate uniform in Week 11 against the Minnesota Vikings in a 21-20 win.

Going up against the Patriots on Sunday, Denver will aim to improve to 2-1 wearing alternates this season.

Eventually, the Broncos will have new primary uniforms. Team president Damani Leech confirmed in July that Denver is working on a new uniform. Whether or not that new design arrives in time for the 2024 season remains to be seen. In the meantime, Broncos fans can enjoy the new alternate look.
