Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes explains his broken helmet situation vs. Dolphins

Kansas City #Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes explains the situation with his broken helmet against the Miami #Dolphins

The frigid cold didn’t hamper the Kansas City Chiefs offense as they found a groove in front of the faithful Arrowhead Stadium crowd. The chill in the air had the Miami Dolphins frozen and broken offensively, as the latter had a unique effect on a member of the Chiefs.

The competitive mindset of Patrick Mahomes has shown its face for better and worse this season as another chapter was added to his legacy on Saturday. Mahomes explained to reporters after the game for the broken helmet he suffered after a red zone scramble.

“I’m sure it had to do with it being really cold,” Mahomes said. “I didn’t know what had happened at the moment. But I got in the huddle, and everybody was telling me I was like, I got y’all, but I’m not coming out the game. We could figure out on the sidelines and hoping we scored obviously, we didn’t get in the endzone. But yeah, it was a first for me.”

Mahomes would discuss the complicated process on the sidelines to find a suitable replacement helmet. He was shown on television visibly frustrated while trying on several helmets.

“They have a backup out there; we’ll talk about where we store the backup because it was frozen,” Mahomes explained. “So when I tried to put it on, it was completely frozen. I couldn’t get it on. I think we got a picture of it; it didn’t look great, but we were able to adjust it on the sideline, get it warmed up a little bit, and get rolling from there.”

The new helmet replacement worked well the rest of the game as the Chiefs successfully put away Miami to punch their ticket to the divisional round next week.
