A tired Jon Rahm hopes to avoid Masters hangover at RBC Heritage, already thinking Champions Dinner

“If I was one of the kids, I would want to see the recent Masters champion play good or bad, just want to be there.”

Shortly after winning the Masters on Sunday and concluding his press conference, Jon Rahm was whisked away to Butler Cabin where his family was waiting to toast his four-shot victory over Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson.

“It was a very enjoyable 20 minutes (before a dinner in his honor in the clubhouse) to just be with my family over there in such a special cabin just by ourselves for a little bit was very nice,” said Rahm, speaking on Wednesday during his pre-tournament press conference ahead of the RBC Heritage.

Among those to congratulate Rahm on his second major championship and 11th PGA Tour title was fellow Spanish star and winner of 22 majors in tennis, Rafael Nadal, who left a poignant voicemail. Rahm also noted he didn’t celebrate as hard as some might imagine.

“That will take part next week,” he said.

Nevertheless, Rahm said he didn’t sleep well, observing that whenever he wins, whether it is the adrenaline rush he enjoys or something else, he finds it difficult to come down from the victory buzz.

“Monday night, I slept great and still woke up tired,” he said.

Yet, Rahm is scheduled to play this week at the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, where a star-studded field in one of the PGA Tour’s designated events is set to compete for $20 million, an even larger purse than last week’s Masters. He spent an extra day in Augusta, Georgia, on Monday with his family to give his body some extra rest before he shifted into competition mode. (He was on the practice-putting green at Harbour Town by early Tuesday afternoon and played nine holes in the pro-am on Wednesday morning.)

The field counts 41 of the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Ranking and 29 of the top 30 players in the FedEx Cup standings are in the field, with one notable absence: Rory McIlroy. After missing the cut at the Masters, McIlroy withdrew from the tournament on Monday and is skipping his second designated event. Did Rahm, who returned to World No. 1 on Monday, consider withdrawing from the RBC Heritage after playing 30 holes on Sunday and feeling both physically and mentally exhausted?

“It did cross my mind, but I made a commitment earlier in the year, and I want to honor that commitment,” said Rahm, who is seeking his fifth Tour title of the season. No player has won five times in a season on Tour since Justin Thomas in 2016-17. “I also, talking to (wife) Kelley, I put myself in the shoes of not only the spectators, but the kids as well. If I was one of the kids, I would want to see the recent Masters champion play good or bad, just want to be there.”

[pickup_prop id=”33014″]

Rahm is the first reigning Masters champion to play the following week on Tour since Jordan Spieth in 2015. Rahm confirmed that the green jacket awarded to the Masters champion is with him this week, but he’s focused on donning the tartan jacket awarded to the Heritage champion on Sunday. This week marks his second start at the RBC Heritage, his first since 2020, when he finished tied for 33rd.

“I can promise you that every time I tee it up in a tournament, it’s going to be to win. It may feel better or worse, but I intend to try my hardest to win,” he said. “I still intend to hopefully do the jacket double and taking this one home.”

He added: “I feel like I’m going to be feeling better every day. So I think it could be a little challenging early on, but if I can get through the first two days, I think on the weekend I’ll feel back to normal.”

Rahm also was asked by Jimmy, a Make-A-Wish Foundation heart-transplant recipient, if he had given thought to his menu for next year’s Champions Dinner on the Tuesday of Masters week, which is hosted by the defending champion.

“I think this is the part of the week that I’ve given the most amount of thought already,” Rahm said. “I don’t know exactly. Chef Jose Andres is a really good friend of mine, so I’ll be working with him. I also want to talk to Ollie (two-time Masters champ Jose Maria Olazabal), because we’re from the same part of Spain, to see what he did in his dinner, see if I can go a different route.

“I think I have one of the appetizers down, which would be jambon, Spanish ham, the dessert, which I won’t be disclosing, and the wine. Everything in between is still up in the air. Those three things, I think I have down for now.”

5 prop bets for the 2023 RBC Heritage including Justin Thomas or Max Homa to win at 14/1

A few of these are too good to pass up.

The annual Masters hangover is a bit more bearable this year thanks to the new designated events on the PGA Tour, as world No. 1 Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, defending champion Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa lead the best field in the history of the RBC Heritage.

Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, is different than the other venues we’ve seen host these star-studded events so far this season. It demands precision, patience and does a fantastic job of minimizing the advantage bombers have off the tee.

Let’s jump onto five prop bets for the RBC Heritage, starting with a triple chance to win that includes two names we mentioned in our expert picks story on Tuesday.

Watch: J.T. Poston holes tee shot on par 3 at RBC Heritage … with his second shot

Imperfect timing at Harbour Town.

J.T. Poston hit a great shot during his Tuesday practice round on the 17th hole at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

His caddie, Aaron Flener, posted video on Twitter showing Poston’s ball in the hole on the tough par-3 down the closing stretch of the host site for the RBC Heritage.

“Hey, J.T., where’s your ball?” Flener asked his player. Poston proceeds to point at the hole, and Flener turns the camera to show the ball in the cup.

Sweet, an ace in a practice round.

Not so fast.

Flener asked, “What shot was that from the tee?” Poston responded, “My second one.” The duo began laughing before the video cuts off.

The chances of an average player making a hole-in-one are 12,500 to 1, according to the PGA of America – it’s not quite as large a surprise for a Tour pro. Unfortunately for Poston, this one doesn’t really count.

What happened to his first tee shot? We may never know.

Davis Love III gets new plaid jacket ahead of special week at 2023 RBC Heritage

“I get inspired when I get here, so hopefully things will come together for the weekend,” said Love.

The RBC Heritage means a little more to Davis Love III, especially this year.

A five-time winner of the event, Love was 5 years old when his father competed in the inaugural RBC Heritage in 1969 (won by Arnold Palmer). The tournament will be held for a 55th time this week at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, with Love as its honorary chairman.

“This has been such a big part of my family’s golfing life, and the Heritage means a lot to me, not just because of winning it but being able to play in it for so long, so close to home,” said Love, a resident of St. Simons Island, Georgia. “My kids grew up coming here, now my granddaughters are growing up coming here, and just a big part of my life. It’s great to be the honorary chairman.”

In March of 2020, Love’s three-story, 12,000-square foot plantation-style home of more than 20 years caught fire, and his family lost a lifetime of mementos and memories.

“Three years ago, we lost our house in a fire. (Tournament director Steve Wilmot) gave me a new trophy with all five years of winning the Heritage on it, and one thing I was missing was a plaid jacket,” explained Love on Tuesday. “It’s nice — I asked the first thing when he said would you be the honorary chairman, I said, ‘Yeah, can I get a jacket?’”

Love has played the Heritage a tournament record 33 times and was just 23 years old when he won in 1987 for his first PGA Tour win. To this day, he still holds the mark as the event’s youngest champion. He’ll celebrate his 59th birthday with more than just a new plaid jacket. On Thursday, he has an opening-round tee time alongside Si Woo Kim and Kevin Kisner.

“I’d like some birdies for my birthday this year since it’s on Thursday, the first round, and I’d like to get off to a good start on my birthday,” said Love.

With its new status as a designated event for 2023, seven of the top-10 players in the Official World Golf Ranking (and 38 of the top 50) are heading to Hilton Head. While that’s great for the tournament and the area, it’s tough for long-time competitors like Love.

“I’m going to have to play really well to get in again,” explained Love. “It’s a little bit sad for me, but I’m excited for the growth of the tournament.”

Love has 10 top-five finishes over the years at the Heritage, but has only made the cut twice in his last eight appearances.

“It’s not ready yet. Maybe something will happen between now and Thursday,” said Love of his game. “But coming off a lot of injuries. I haven’t really been able to get a lot of rounds in. You know, like Freddy Couples at the Masters, I get inspired when I get here, so hopefully things will come together for the weekend.”

Jordan Spieth says the RBC Heritage has the ‘potential to be as exciting an event as we’ve seen this year’

“It could be just such a massively bunched leaderboard of such big names.”

The RBC Heritage is going to be different in 2023.

It’s one of the PGA Tour’s designated events — seven of the world’s top 10 are set to tee it up Thursday — creating one of the best, if not the best, field Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, has ever seen.

But what makes it even more intriguing is that the golf course forces players to prioritize accuracy over brute distance.

It’s no secret that many residents of the Official World Golf Ranking’s top 20 are long-ball hitters and have dominated the designated events early this season.

Jon Rahm (Sentry Tournament of Champions, Genesis Invitational, Masters), Scottie Scheffler (WM Phoenix Open, Players Championship), Sam Burns (WGC-Dell Match Play) and Kurt Kitayama (Arnold Palmer Invitational) have conquered the loaded fields in 2023. What do they have in common?

All four players are ranked inside the top 35 in driving distance: Rahm (ninth), Burns (19th), Scheffler (20th) and Kitayama (35th).

RBC Heritage: Expert picks | Sleepers | Photos

But, according to defending champion Jordan Spieth, Harbour Town Golf Links could produce a more diverse leaderboard.

“I think on a course like this, it’s going to be more unique than any of the ones that we’ve experienced in any of the elevated events so far because you have a course where it doesn’t matter about length,” he said Tuesday after the ceremonial cannon shot. “You just have to golf your ball around. It’s an advantage if you hit it far and straight, but you’ve got to take risk on more than you do other places if you want to try and keep hitting driver.

“It could be just such a massively bunched leaderboard of such big names, it’s got the potential to be as exciting an event as we’ve seen this year.”

Pete Dye’s design has crowned an assortment of winners over the years. Spieth, Stewart Cink, Webb Simpson, C.T. Pan, Satoshi Kodaira, Wesley Bryan, Branden Grace and Jim Furyk are among those who have donned the tartan jacket going back to 2015.

[afflinkbutton text=”Book your trip to Harbour Town today” link=”https://www.golfbreaks.com/en-us/vacations/hilton-head/sea-pines-resort/harbour-town-golf-links/?cid=999740052&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=golfweek&utm_campaign=pgat_tournament_courses_q3_22_gw”]

Tough to classify any of those guys as bombers.

On top of the required accuracy off the tee, most of the routing demands working the ball both ways.

“I’m sure there’s plenty of winners here who have only had to move it the other way once or twice, but yes, in order to get to all the pins and really position yourself the right way, it requires pretty much both ball flights,” said Spieth, one of the true artists on Tour when it comes to playing the required shot.

If you’re looking for an analogy for the 2023 RBC Heritage, think of it as putting 15-20 Lamborghinis on a Driver’s Ed practice track. Speed and horsepower are canceled out and all of a sudden those drivers are forced to parallel park, avoid cones and keep both hands on the wheel at all times.

If they don’t, they’ll fail.

After the year’s first major championship, the PGA Tour heads to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, for another designated event. The 2023 RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links welcomes a loaded field that includes newly-crowned Masters champ Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, defending champion Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa and Patrick Cantlay.

Harbour Town Golf Links is a par-71 track that measures 7,213 yards. The Pete Dye design requires accuracy off the tee and into the greens.

World No. 3 Rory McIlroy was originally in the field but withdrew Monday. He missed the cut at the Masters last week.

2023 RBC Heritage odds: 3 sleeper picks to win including Justin Rose (75/1)

Rose is coming off a top 20 at the Masters and finished 14th at Harbour Town in 2020.

After the year’s first major, the PGA Tour is headed to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, for yet another designated event. The RBC Heritage is boasting one of the best —if not the best — fields it’s ever had.

World No. 1 and green jacket-wearing Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, defending champion Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa and more are all set to tee it up come Thursday morning.

The third-ranked player in the world, Rory McIlroy, withdrew from the field on Monday. He missed the cut at the Masters last week.

Here are three sleepers to keep an eye on at Harbour Town, starting with a player who has already won on Tour this season.

2023 RBC Heritage odds, course history and expert picks to win

Let’s grab a winner in Hilton Head.

The week after the Masters is usually a letdown, but thanks to the new designated events on the PGA Tour, the RBC Heritage field is loaded.

World No. 1 and Augusta National champion Jon Rahm leads the way in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, as he’s joined by Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay, last year’s RBC Heritage winner Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa.

Rory McIlroy, who disappointedly missed the cut last week in Georgia, withdrew from the event Monday. In one start at Harbour Town Golf Links, McIlroy finished T-41. Will Zalatoris, who was originally in the field, had season-ending back surgery after withdrawing from the Masters. Jason Day withdrew Sunday after finishing the year’s first major with an 80.

Check the yardage book: Harbour Town Golf Links for the 2023 RBC Heritage on the PGA Tour

StrackaLine offers hole-by-hole maps for one of the most recognizable courses on the PGA Tour.

Harbour Town Golf Links – site of the 2023 RBC Heritage on the PGA Tour – was designed by Pete Dye with an assist from Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1969 on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Part of Sea Pines Resort, Harbour Town ranks No. 2 in South Carolina on Golfweek’s Best list of public-access layouts in each state. It also ranks No. 21 among all resort courses in the U.S., and it comes in at No. 54 on Golfweek’s Best list of all modern courses in the U.S.

Harbour Town will play to 7,191 yards with a par of 71 for the RBC Heritage. With tree branches frequently dangling into playing corridors, the layout tends to favor control over brute strength as players must navigate sometimes tight fairway lines on the interior holes before the course moves to Calibogue Sound for the final two holes. The par 3s are considered by many to be among the best sets of 1-shotters in the game.

Thanks to yardage books provided by StrackaLine – the maker of detailed yardage books for thousands of courses around the world – we can see exactly the challenges the pros face this week.
