PGA Tour caddie has hilarious interaction with fan, says be quiet in the most polite way possible

“We’re playing golf over here.”

Professional caddies have a nearly impossible job, even when done right.

Although they’re not the ones hitting the shots, they’re in charge of helping players dial in a yardage, figure out where the wind is coming from and how a certain slope is going to affect ball flight.

And sometimes, caddies have to perform crowd control.

Enter Aaron Flener, caddie for two-time PGA Tour winner J.T. Poston, who is in the field at this week’s 2024 American Express in La Quinta, California. Poston carded a 5-under 67 on Thursday, but on his final hole of the day at PGA West’s Pete Dye Stadium Course, he found the bunker on the par-4 18th.

As Poston lined up for his second shot, cameras panned to him waggling in the bunker, but a fan close by was having a phone conversation. That’s when Flener put a swift end to it in the most polite way possible.

“Sir, can you hang up the phone, please? We’re playing golf over here.”

The comments brought a chuckle from the announcers, and even Poston stepped off his ball and put his hand up to his ear, making a phone gesture with his fingers.

No need to fret, however. Poston was able to get out of the bunker and make par to finish his day strong.

And for Flener, it was just another day on the job.

SAXX Underwear announces partnership with PGA Tour caddies to support cancer research with hilarious video

For every birdie a caddie’s player makes, SAXX Underwear will donate $100 to the Testicular Cancer Foundation.

Golf caddies are tasked with taking care of their players week in and week out, but the boys on the bag need some support, too.

That’s why the folks at SAXX Underwear have stepped in and partnered with a handful of PGA Tour caddies to help with their own equipment and make a positive difference along the way.

Tour caddies Geno Bonnalie (Joel Dahmen), Aaron Flener (J.T. Poston), John Limanti (Keith Mitchell) and Joel Stock (Will Zalatoris) will wear SAXX underwear, shorts and polos on and off the course, and for every birdie their players make, SAXX will donate $100 to the Testicular Cancer Foundation.

“The Ball Masters” will also have their own caddie house when the U.S. Open heads to Los Angeles Country Club, June 15-18, 2023.

As Bonnalie likes to say, “every set of balls deserves a proper caddie.”

Watch: J.T. Poston holes tee shot on par 3 at RBC Heritage … with his second shot

Imperfect timing at Harbour Town.

J.T. Poston hit a great shot during his Tuesday practice round on the 17th hole at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

His caddie, Aaron Flener, posted video on Twitter showing Poston’s ball in the hole on the tough par-3 down the closing stretch of the host site for the RBC Heritage.

“Hey, J.T., where’s your ball?” Flener asked his player. Poston proceeds to point at the hole, and Flener turns the camera to show the ball in the cup.

Sweet, an ace in a practice round.

Not so fast.

Flener asked, “What shot was that from the tee?” Poston responded, “My second one.” The duo began laughing before the video cuts off.

The chances of an average player making a hole-in-one are 12,500 to 1, according to the PGA of America – it’s not quite as large a surprise for a Tour pro. Unfortunately for Poston, this one doesn’t really count.

What happened to his first tee shot? We may never know.

Since J.T. Poston won John Deere Classic, caddie Aaron Flener says there’s now time to ‘wash our underwear’ before heading to Open Championship at St. Andrews

Aaron Flener says J.T. Poston never gets too high, never gets too low and that suits him just fine.

“Conversations with Champions, presented by Sentry” is a weekly series from Golfweek in collaboration with The Caddie Network, where we take you behind the scenes for a chat with the winning caddie from the most recent PGA Tour event. This week: Aaron Flener, caddie for J.T. Poston at the 2022 John Deere Classic.

J.T. Poston is dialed in.

Poston, a wire-to-wire winner at the 2022 John Deere Classic, came into the tournament with a tie for second the week before at the Travelers Championship. So things are definitely looking up.

Way up, in fact, from the start of the 2021-22 season, when Poston opened the campaign with six straight missed cuts. He’s missed 14 of 24 cuts in all this season, but that’s all in the rearview mirror now.

“He got off to a slow start in the fall, missed every cut and just had a couple top 25s here and there at the start of the year, but nothing great,” Flener told John Rathouz from The Caddie Network.

Consistent work with his swing coach though has paid off.

“Finally his golf swing has just clicked in and he doesn’t have to think about that anymore, he can just go play golf,” Flener said.

An even-keel mindset is one of Poston’s best attributes.

“He never gets too high, never gets too low so it’s so it’s nice to work for a guy like that,” Flener said. “I’m kinda like, too, so we kinda have similar personalities, similar, you know, just the way we operate.”

It’s not just his caddie though, that sees the cool, calm demeanor.

“I think the beauty of J.T. is never gets too high with the highs or too low with the lows. He just kind of stays pretty steady,” two-time major champion Zach Johnson said.

Poston’s second PGA Tour win earned him one of the last remaining spots in the 150th Open Championship next week. It also got him into a couple of other important events.

“When we were playing on Sunday, I wasn’t thinking about any of that stuff,” Flener said. “I thought about the Open during the week because I know there were three spots, so I was thinking about that. And once we got done Sunday I was like ‘We’re in the Masters. And oh year, the Tournament of Champions’, which is awesome.”

Poston is not in the field at the Genesis Scottish Open this week, nor is he playing the opposite-field event in Kentucky, the Barbasol Championship. That has freed up Flener to take care of some chores before hitting the road.
