GFL draft results: Former UFC champions surprise with unexpected entries

Check out the GFL Draft results and see which of the hottest free agents and MMA legends were selected to compete in the inaugural year.

It’s not every day there’s an MMA draft, but Friday there was

The 2025 GFL Draft took place virtually with a live stream on MMA Junkie. Six teams, each representing a major city, drafted from a pool of approximately 500 fighters, including big-name free agents and rising prospects.

One-hundred-twenty athletes were be selected across 10 weight classes (heavyweight, light heavyweight, middleweight, welterweight, lightweight, featherweight, bantamweight, women’s bantamweight, women’s strawweight, and women’s atomweight). However, the weight classes are divided slightly differently than the traditional weight classes. The promotion says it’s an effort to combat weight cutting.

Click here to see which fighters are eligible for the draft.

The six teams are managed and coached by MMA notables, as follows: Dubai (manager Cain Velasquez and coach Javier Mendez); London (manager Luke Barnatt and coach Carl Prince); Los Angeles (manager Wanderlei Silva and coach Rafael Cordeiro); Miami (manager Thiago Alves and coach Conan Silveira); New York (manager TBA and coach Ray Longo); and Sao Paulo (manager Lyoto Machida and coach Andre Pederneiras.

With a whopping 55 fighters signed in the months of September and October combined, the UFC has parted ways with nearly a dozen fighters in recent days including a former women’s flyweight title challenger.

Algorithm-based Twitter account UFC Roster Tracker first published the transactions when the promotion removed the fighters from official rankings eligibility.

Check out the recent batch of UFC departures below. The means of each fighter’s departure (release, end of contract, etc.) is not known, unless denoted otherwise.

Check out all the facts from UFC Fight Night 228, including the end of Michelle Waterson-Gomez’s more than 14-year run without a TKO loss.

The UFC put a bow on its September schedule and a run of 17 straight weeks of events on Saturday with UFC Fight Night 228, which took place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

After a card with a handful of highlights, the lightweight main event ended in disappointing fashion when Rafael Fiziev (12-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC) suffered a knee injury that ended the fight prematurely, giving Mateusz Gamrot (23-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC) the TKO victory.

UFC Fight Night 208 post-event facts: Molly McCann’s second spinning elbow makes history

Molly McCann owns two of six spinning elbow knockouts in UFC history after UFC Fight Night 208.

The UFC’s encore in London did not live up to the standards of its visit to the city earlier this year. Nine of the 14 bouts at UFC Fight Night 208 on Saturday at The O2 went to a decision.

The heavyweight main event capped off in disappointing fashion when [autotag]Tom Aspinall[/autotag] (12-3 MMA, 5-1 UFC) suffered a knee injury just 15 seconds into the fight, giving [autotag]Curtis Blaydes[/autotag] (17-3 MMA, 12-3 UFC) a TKO victory.

UFC Fight Night 208 results: Molly McCann lights up Hannah Goldy with another elbow, then lights up London

Molly McCann’s star kept rising Saturday in front of her home British fans at UFC Fight Night 208.

[autotag]Molly McCann[/autotag]’s star kept rising Saturday in front of her home British fans at UFC Fight Night 208.

McCann (13-4 MMA, 6-3 UFC), from Liverpool, took out [autotag]Hannah Goldy[/autotag] (6-3 MMA, 1-3 UFC) with a first-round TKO in their women’s flyweight bout and set the fans at The O2 in London into a frenzy. Ahead of McCann’s finish, those fans had endured eight decisions in the first nine fights.

“I don’t know if I’ve ever seen this before in combat sports in the U.K. – getting behind a female athlete,” McCann said. “To see everyone else on this card who let you down, I won’t let you down.”

McCann threw first and missed, then tried to get inside with a combination a few seconds later. Just 30 seconds in, they nearly tied up and Goldy landed a solid knee. But seconds later, McCann landed a one-two, then pushed Goldy back with a right hand.

Goldy faked a takedown, then 90 seconds in made good on an attempt and drove McCann to the fence. She kept her tied up there for a while before McCann finally broke away just past the midway point of the round. Goldy went after a takedown again right after that, but ate a punch from McCann. McCann landed a solid right counter, then pushed Goldy to the canvas with 90 seconds left.

McCann let Goldy up quickly, then made her pay the price.

McCann landed a big right hand, then a spinning back elbow and hurt Goldy. The elbow was a quick reminder of McCann’s March win in London, which she finished with the same move.

After the elbow, McCann pounced. With several quick punches, Goldy hit the canvas. A few punches more were all Herb Dean needed to see to stop the fight.

McCann tore to the fence and went over the top of it and out into the crowd to celebrate her TKO, which came at the 3:52 mark of the opening round.

McCann has won three straight. In March at UFC Fight Night 204 in London, she picked up a post-fight bonus for a spinning back elbow knockout of Luana Carolina. That win came on the heels of a Fight of the Night decision win over Ji Yeon Kim in September 2021. Goldy has lost three of her past four.

The UFC is back in London just four months after its highly successful event there in March, and heavyweights are at the top of the lineup.

UFC Fight Night 208 takes place Saturday at The O2 in London. The card streams on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, [autotag]Curtis Blaydes[/autotag] (16-3 MMA, 11-3 UFC) takes on [autotag]Tom Aspinall[/autotag] (12-2 MMA, 5-0 UFC) at heavyweight. Aspinall, from England, is a slight -145 favorite at Tipico Sportsbook; the comeback on Blaydes is +115. But our 11 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers mostly see it the other way. Blaydes has a big 9-2 advantage in the picks.

In the middleweight co-feature, [autotag]Jack Hermansson[/autotag] (22-7 MMA, 9-5 UFC) meets short-notice replacement [autotag]Chris Curtis[/autotag] (29-8 MMA, 3-0 UFC), who stepped in for the injured Darren Till. The fight nearly is a pick’em at the betting window, but it’s Curtis with a 7-4 edge from our staff members.

Also on the main card, rising British star [autotag]Paddy Pimblett[/autotag] (18-3 MMA, 2-0 UFC) fights [autotag]Jordan Leavitt[/autotag] (10-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) at lightweight. Pimblett is a -270 favorite and has a big 9-2 picks lead.

Three-time light heavyweight title challenger [autotag]Alexander Gustafsson[/autotag] (18-7 MMA, 10-7 UFC) is back in the division after a one-fight stint at heavyweight in 2020. He is a +160 underdog against -210 favorite [autotag]Nikita Krylov[/autotag] (27-9 MMA, 8-7 UFC). But despite the betting odds in Krylov’s favor, Gustafsson is a near-unanimous pick at 10-1.

Our lone unanimous pick on the main card is another British fan favorite, Pimblett’s teammate [autotag]Molly McCann[/autotag] (12-4 MMA, 5-3 UFC). She’s the main card’s biggest favorite at -420 for her women’s flyweight bout against [autotag]Hannah Goldy[/autotag] (6-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC), and she has a shutout in the picks at 11-0.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Paul Craig[/autotag] (16-4-1 MMA, 8-4-1 UFC) takes on former light heavyweight title challenger [autotag]Volkan Oezdemir[/autotag] (17-6 MMA, 5-5 UFC), who is a -155 favorite. But despite that, +120 underdog Craig has a big 9-2 lead in the picks.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Aspinall (65 percent), Curtis (60 percent), Pimblett (76 percent), Gustafsson (63 percent), McCann (83 percent) and Craig (69 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.

Molly McMann gets another UFC London home fight vs. Hannah Goldy

“Meatball” Molly McCann will fight in London for the second time in as many fights.

[autotag]Molly McCann[/autotag] will fight in her home country for the second time in a row when the UFC returns to London on July 23.

One of the first additions to an event expected to be a UFC Fight Night card, McCann (12-4 MMA, 5-3 UFC) will face off with American [autotag]Hannah Goldy[/autotag] (6-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) in a flyweight bout, the promotion announced Tuesday. The event takes place at The O2 and streams on ESPN+.

McCann most recently competed in London in March, when she blew the roof off The O2 with a violent spinning backfist knockout of Luana Carolina. With the victory, McCann made it back-to-back victories after a unanimous decision win over Ji Yeon Kim in September.

Goldy is coming off her first UFC victory. In September, she snapped a two-fight skid when she submitted Emily Whitmire with a first-round armbar. The win was her first pro submission and second pro finish overall.

With the addition, the UFC London lineup includes:

  • Curtis Blaydes vs. Tom Aspinall
  • Jack Hermansson vs. Darren Till
  • Charles Johnson vs. Muhammad Mokaev
  • Alexander Gustaffson vs. Nikita Krylov
  • Hannah Goldy vs. Molly McCann
