Steelers to wear throwback jerseys in honor of Super Bowl IX 50th anniversary

In Week 7 against the New York Jets, the Pittsburgh Steelers will wear throwback uniforms inspired by their Super Bowl IX win in the 1974 season.

The Pittsburgh Steelers will wear throwback jerseys, inspired by their Super Bowl victory 50 years ago, against the New York Jets in Week 7. Super Bowl IX holds a special place in the hearts of all Pittsburgh fans because it was when the Pittsburgh Steelers earned their first Lombardi Trophy, kicking off a journey to become arguably the greatest NFL franchise of all time.

The 1974 season not only resulted in winning the greatest trophy in all of professional football, but it was also responsible for perhaps the greatest draft class in Pittsburgh sports history, producing five Pro Football Hall of Famers: WR Lynn Swann, LB Jack Lambert, WR John Stallworth, C Mike Webster and SS Donnie Shell.

In that Super Bowl, played at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans on Jan. 12, 1975, the Steelers defeated the Minnesota Vikings 16-6. Pittsburgh’s Steel Curtain defense held quarterback Fran Tarkenton and the Vikings to 119 total yards, which is still a Super Bowl record low.

The beloved block-number-style jerseys are coming back in Week 7, and along with the classic look, gray face masks will also return, which were part of the iconic look of this phenomenal team. The Steelers will look to dominate the Jets in classic Steel Curtain fashion, not only to improve their record to 5-2 on the season but to perform at a level the 1974 Steelers would be proud of.

Champ Bailey dubs Pat Surtain best cornerback in the NFL

“This kid is the best in the game right now,” Champ Bailey said of Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain.

Before Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain was rewarded for his elite play with the richest deal for a defensive back in NFL history earlier this week, he was lauded by Hall of Fame cornerback and Broncos legend Champ Bailey.

“This kid is the best in the game right now,” Bailey said during a recent interview with Zach Gelb of Infinity Sports Network. “When he came out of college, I said he has Pro Football Hall of Fame potential. … There is no doubt in my mind he will continue to excel.”

The Broncos certainly think highly of Surtain as well. On Wednesday, Surtain was given a history-making, four-year, $96 million contract extension that ties him to the team through 2029.

Bailey is no stranger to being a star cornerback. During his 15-year career, Bailey was always on the opponent’s best receiver, as Surtain is today.

Denver solidified its defensive cornerstone for the foreseeable future and hopes that Surtain can continue to play at the elite level he is performing at. He is already a two-time Pro Bowler and a one-time first-team All-Pro, three years into his career.

Surtain will be one of the faces of a youth movement in Denver, hopefully to become one of the foundational pieces in what fans hope to be a team built for many years of success down the road.

Patrick Mahomes praises Travis Kelce’s leadership at Chiefs training camp

QB Patrick Mahomes praised TE Travis Kelce’s leadership ability during a press conference at Chiefs training camp this week.

The Kansas City Chiefs have concluded their challenging training in St. Joseph this morning, afterward Chiefs Super Bowl champion quarterback Patrick Mahomes spoke to the press about the work the team did in their yearly stint at Missouri Western State University.

Mahomes had no shortage of glowing praise for his colleague tight end Travis Kelce and told reporters about the All-Pro pass-catcher’s role as a leader in Kansas City’s locker room after workouts this week.

“It’s remarkable, honestly I mean you see him every day at practice, he’s working, he’s in there getting the reps,” Mahomes explained of Kelce. “He actually gets mad when they take him out. I mean he has all the right in the world to be on the sidelines there coaching because he knows the stuff, and he doesn’t necessarily need the reps but he loves it, he loves working.”

“It makes my job easier as a leader to push other guys because I can just say, ‘Look at the Hall of Famer who’s out here practicing harder than anybody.'” The veteran QB expressing appreciation for his teammate continued, “That’s what makes him so special man, is he enjoys the process of being great”

Mahomes shared his overall takeaway from this training camp, explaining the practice was a daily competition for excellence between the Chiefs’ defense and offense.

“I thought it was a competitive camp,” Mahomes said, “You know it was the best thing, more than just standouts, I thought every day you just didn’t know if the offense or the defense was gonna win and that’s what makes it a great camp is that you wanna compete.”

“There’s days the defense gets after us, there’s days that I feel like we have the advantage. So I think that was the most positive thing I took from camp, and obviously players, they have days and stuff like that but I think the competitive nature of the camp was the best part about it”

The Chiefs will continue to improve their game back home, readying themselves to face the Detroit Lions this Saturday when the next preseason match will be held at Arrowhead Stadium.

Wagner will be remembered as a first-ballot Hall of Famer and Seahawks legend when all is said and done, as will Wilson himself.

In the aftermath of the somewhat expected release of the Seattle Seahawks’ defensive mainstay of the Legion of Boom era, Russell Wilson sent Bobby Wagner some words of praise and encouragement via Twitter.

Calling Wagner the greatest player he has ever played with is a mighty-big thing for Wilson to say considering he has played with some who would rank among the best to ever do it at their respective positions, but it also holds significant merit. Wagner will be remembered as a first-ballot Hall of Famer and Seahawks legend when all is said and done, as will Wilson himself.

Wagner, who recently expressed surprise at the Seahawks’ front office not informing him of his release, is still a free agent at this time. There have been rumors that he could join Wilson with the Denver Broncos, but numerous teams will undoubtedly be interested in his services despite his age.

Report: Strangers tried to help Pernell Whitaker after he was struck

A 911 recording obtained by TMZ Sports indicates that strangers tried to help Pernell Whitaker after he was hit by a car.

Strangers tried to help Pernell Whitaker after he was struck by a car, according a 911 recording obtained by TMZ Sports.

The Hall of Famer was hit crossing a street in Virginia Beach, Virginia on July 14, after which a woman on the scene called for emergency help and reportedly tried to recruit others in the area to help Whitaker.

“He is on the ground right now,” the woman tells the 911 operator. … “I’m not sure if he is alive.”

After she is asked whether she would administer CPR: “He’s not alive. OK, we have to roll him over. I want to do it.”

“Oh, there’s a lot of blood!” she says. A man on the audio adds, “There’s a whole bunch of f—ing blood.”

The woman, evidently still determined to administer CPR, then says, “OK, let’s do it. Come on. Let’s just try it … if there’s any way we can help him.”

Paramedics soon arrived and pronounced Whitaker dead at the scene. He was 55.
