Sean Payton surprised Drew Brees at QB’s Saints Hall of Fame ceremony before ‘TNF’

“He wanted it to be this game, and that means something,” Sean Payton said of Drew Brees being honored with his old coach in attendance.

The New Orleans Saints added former quarterback Drew Brees to their Hall of Fame on Thursday with a special guest in attendance.

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton as well as fellow ex-Saints assistants Joe Lombardi, Zach Strief and Pete Carmichael surprised the former quarterback and attended the ceremony on Thursday afternoon, according to The Times-Picayune‘s Jeff Duncan.

Payton and the Broncos are preparing to face the Saints on Thursday Night Football tonight in New Orleans. Saints owner Gayle Benson was the only one who knew Payton would attend Brees’ ceremony.

Payton received a standing ovation at the ceremony and then turned his attention toward TNF as he left:

The Saints will also recognize Brees at halftime of tonight’s game.

https://twitter.com/Saints/status/1846978503407030787

It’s a fitting game for the team to honor Brees because it marks Payton’s return to New Orleans. Brees, of course, played 15 years under Payton, helping the Saints win Super Bowl XLIV following the 2009 season.

Payton will be busy when Brees is honored at halftime tonight, but he was able to stop by the ceremony this afternoon.

I’m sure there will be the right moment to reach out to him,” Payton said earlier this week when asked about Brees. “He’s going into their Hall of Fame, and then they also have a Ring of Honor. I don’t know what year it is now [for Pro Football Hall of Fame eligibility], but this will be the beginning of a number of [honors for Brees]. He wanted it to be this game, and that means something, but the focus for us still and our team.”

Payton is obviously happy for Brees, but he attempted to keep the focus on the game leading up to TNF.

“I told them this [Tuesday] morning, is we’re in the business of collecting wins, and this is the next one we have to get. The preparation and all of it. Years later, we’ll be able to look back on it, but right now [it’s] focused.”

Brees will be eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2026.

Mike Shanahan, Dan Reeves among coach candidates for Hall of Fame

Mike Shanahan and late former Broncos coach Dan Reeves are among 12 coach candidates for the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame class.

Mike Shanahan and late former Denver Broncos coach Dan Reeves are among 12 coach candidates for the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame class, the Hall of Fame announced Thursday.

Shanahan and Reeves are joined by Bill Arnsparger, Tom Coughlin, Jeff Fisher, Alex Gibbs, Mike Holmgren, Chuck Knox, Richie Petitbon, Marty Schottenheimer, George Seifert and Clark Shaughnessy.

The selection committee will narrow the list of 12 candidates down to one finalist in the coming weeks.

Reeves, who died at age 77 in 2022, reached nine Super Bowls as a player and coach, representing the third-most in NFL history only behind Bill Belichick (12) and Tom Brady (10).

Shanahan, 72, won a Super Bowl as an assistant with the San Francisco 49ers and later won back-to-back Super Bowls as a head coach with the Broncos.

Denver had 11 senior candidates named earlier this year who did not advance in the voting. The Broncos still have 19 modern-era candidates for the 2025 class, with Shanahan and Reeves now added to the pool of candidates.

Drew Brees ahead of team HOF induction: ‘I still feel like I’m a New Orleans Saint’

Drew Brees reflected on his time with the Saints ahead of his induction into the team Hall of Fame, and he says he’s a lifer: ‘I still feel like I’m a New Orleans Saint’

Drew Brees will be inducted in the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame Thursday night. It’s a celebratory moment for the greatest player in Saints history. Brees is the best quarterback in franchise history and one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play in the NFL.

He may have started his career as a member of the Chargers, but Brees says he’s a Saints lifer. He still says “we” when talking about the team casually, and spelled out his intentions: “I still feel like I’m a New Orleans Saint.” He’s synonymous with the Saints after spearheading their greatest era alongside Sean Payton.

For Brees, “So many emotions come back every time (he) steps foot in the Dome.” Brees not only rose to prominence with the team, but also became a part of the city. The tie between the Saints and their city runs deep. After 15 years at the helm, Brees is intertwined in that fabric too.

Brees added, “I think we have the reputation for being one of the greatest fanbases in the country, being one of the greatest game day atmospheres in the country.” That reputation isn’t built without Brees. The fanbase and game day atmosphere reached a broader range and was amplified by the sustained success of the Brees-Payton era.

PHOTOS: Wisconsin basketball legend Bo Ryan through the years

A look at Bo Ryan’s career with the Wisconsin Badgers

Wisconsin basketball legend Bo Ryan was enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Sunday.

The longtime Badger coach received his induction back in April. Sunday’s event made his enshrinement official, as he and the rest of the Naismith Hall of Fame Class of 2024 received their jackets and were immortalized among the sport’s all-time greats. Other members of that class include NBA greats Vince Carter, Chauncey Billups and Walter Davis.

“I’m still pinching myself,” the Wisconsin Badgers legend said before the ceremony. “When I got the word, all the memories, all the players, all the camaraderie of the teams that were cohesive…those are the things that flashed into my head. Boy, do I have a lot of people to thank.”

Here is a clip from Ryan’s speech, specifically about his players and program at Wisconsin:

Ryan coached for the Badgers from 2001-2015. His Hall of Fame tenure with the program included four Big Ten Coach of the Year awards (2002, 2003, 2013, 2015), four Big Ten titles, two Final Four appearances and a final record of 364-130.

To say that there are Wisconsin program ‘greats’ discounts Ryan’s substantial individual impact and importance. He is the embodiment of Wisconsin basketball and is a significant reason the program is where it is today.

As Ryan’s coaching career is celebrated by the basketball world, here is a look at his time at Wisconsin, through photos:

Broncos CB Pat Surtain an early contender for Defensive Player of the Year

Broncos CB Pat Surtain has been shutting down star receivers. Now he has two interceptions and a 100-yard pick-six. DPOY!

Denver Broncos star cornerback Pat Surtain continues to dominate.

After grabbing two interceptions and recording a 100-yard pick-six in a 34-18 win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, Surtain is well on his way to plenty of accolades this season.

“Pat’s got my vote for Defensive Player of the Year,” defensive lineman Zach Allen said after Sunday’s victory.

Through the first four weeks of the season, Surtain covered DK Metcalf, George Pickens, Mike Evans and Garrett Wilson and he allowed just eight receptions for 88 yards and no touchdowns.

Raiders star wide receiver Davante Adams missed Sunday’s game with a calf injury (and trade demands), but Surtain still had a big impact on the game, helping cover tight end Brock Bowers.

Surtain’s pick-six against the Raiders stopped Las Vegas from at least scoring a field goal, which would have given them a 13-3 lead.

“He made a good play,” coach Sean Payton said after the game. “He made a real good play. The significance of the play is it is a 10-point play because they are probably at a minimum going to kick a field goal from where it happened at.

“That was a huge play for us. At that point, all of a sudden now it is 10-7. This game constantly goes back and forth. When you score on defense, you win 80 percent of the time, and then three turnovers to none. Certainly, it was a huge play, at least a 10-point play.”

It was a game-altering play from the 24-year-old cornerback.

“That was huge,” quarterback Bo Nix said. “That was probably the play of the game, a big momentum shifter. I was sitting right there with Davis [Webb] and the guys on the bench. [I] saw him catch it and kind of how their offense was set up, I didn’t think anybody was going to make a tackle, so I kind of just stayed put, and watched it from the jumbotron and enjoyed everybody celebrating.”

Later in the game, Surtain grabbed a second interception.

Fittingly, Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback Champ Bailey was in the house for Alumni Weekend, so he got a front-row seat to PS2’s performance.

“That was pretty legendary to say the least,” Surtain said of meeting Bailey during pregame. “Having a guy like Champ come out there and watch and bring such good energy. It’s expected out there when you have a Hall of Fame player like that come and watch you.

“I had to capitalize on the opportunities I could get. I had to make that pick-six happen and got another blessing with another pick as well too, so that jersey swap was legendary. That’s something that I have always wanted to have.”

The Broncos hosted more than 120 former players at Empower Field at Mile High on Sunday as part of the team’s Alumni Weekend festivities.

“It means a lot,” Surtain said of playing in front of the team’s former greats. “Every time legends come through, we want to put out a good impression and we want to bring that winning culture that they brought to this organization. To have that energy and to have that aura that they brought is pretty amazing. It was a special day today seeing a bunch of legendary guys on the field cheering us on and I know we were poised for success.”

Surtain is well on his way to becoming a legend himself (Bailey has already said he expects Surtain to become a Hall of Famer). Winning a Defensive Player of the Year award would certainly improve PS2’s resume, and he appears to be a front-runner after five weeks of play.

Champ Bailey was in the house for Pat Surtain’s 100-yard pick-6

Of course Pat Surtain got two interceptions and a 100-yard pick-six with Champ Bailey in attendance!

Denver Broncos star cornerback Pat Surtain made a huge play against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday with a 100-yard pick-six to tie the game at 10-10 in the second quarter.

Fittingly, Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback Champ Bailey was in attendance on Sunday as the Broncos welcomed back former players as part of their Alumni Weekend. Before the game, Bailey and Surtain met up and exchanged jerseys:

Bailey has been full of praise for Surtain since the former Alabama cornerback was picked by Denver in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft.

“This kid is the best in the game right now,” Bailey said during a recent interview with Zach Gelb of Infinity Sports Network. “When he came out of college, I said he has Pro Football Hall of Fame potential. … There is no doubt in my mind he will continue to excel.”

The turnover marked Surtain’s second career pick-six. He previously returned an interception 70 yards for a touchdown as a rookie in 2021. Surtain added another interception in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game. The star cornerback had a huge day with Bailey in attendance.

Broncos honor Randy Gradishar, add 2 players to Ring of Fame during Raiders game

The Broncos honored Randy Gradishar, Steve Foley, Riley Odoms and the 1977 team against the Raiders on Sunday.

The Denver Broncos are throwing it back to 1977 for their AFC West showdown with the Las Vegas Raiders today.

In addition to wearing their beautiful throwback uniform, the Broncos painted their field to appear as it did against the Raiders in the 1977 AFC Championship game, and they updated their scoreboards and stadium signage to reflect the throwback design.

Denver is also playing 1970s-inspired music to complete the throwback atmosphere, and there was a nod to “Back to the Future” outside the stadium.

Before the game, the Broncos unveiled the Ring of Fame pillars for new Ring of Fame members safety Steve Foley and tight end Riley Odoms.

Denver also honored linebacker Randy Gradishar for his recent enshrinement in the Pro Football Hall of Fame before Sunday’s game.

At halftime, Foley and Odoms were officially recognized as the newest members of the team’s Ring of Fame. The Broncos also honored the 1977 team that reached the first Super Bowl in franchise history at halftime.

More than 120 former Denver players returned to Empower Field at Mile High as part of the team’s Alumni Weekend festivities.

“I’m just glad that they’re coming out and getting a chance to be honored,” coach Sean Payton said on Friday. “I think what Carrie [Walton Penner] and Greg [Penner] have done to embrace our history, not only in the building… If you went through the hallways this offseason, here’s the tight ends room and here are the [photographs of former Broncos] tight ends. It’s pretty impressive, and I know how important it is to our ownership, and I know how important it is to me. … I’m excited for those that are obviously getting honored, and then also those that can enjoy and be back for that experience.”

F1 driver and team co-owner Lewis Hamilton also attended Saturday’s walk-through practice.

To complete the throwback, the Broncos will need to beat the Raiders, just like they did in the 1977 AFC Championship game (20-17).

Karl Mecklenburg among ex-Broncos players snubbed by Hall of Fame voters

Karl Mecklenburg, Louis Wright, Lionel Taylor and eight other Broncos players were snubbed by Hall of Fame voters in the senior category.

Karl Mecklenburg and 10 other former Denver Broncos players were named senior candidates for the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame class last month. Voters have since narrowed the pool of 183 nominees down to 60 candidates, and no former Broncos players advanced in the voting.

Mecklenburg, linebacker Tom Jackson, safety Dennis Smith, wide receiver Lionel Taylor, returner Rick Upchurch, cornerback Louis Wright, receiver Bob Scarpitto, defensive lineman Michael Dean Perry, running back Sammy Winder, defensive lineman Lyle Alzado and defensive end Rich Jackson will all have to wait at least another year for a chance to reach Canton.

There is still a chance that the Broncos could be represented in the 2025 class. In addition to the 11 senior nominees, Denver also had 19 modern-era players nominated this year, and Mike Shanahan is expected to be a top candidate in the coach category.

Hall of Fame QB stunned by Saints’ second straight late-game collapse

Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner was stunned by the Saints’ second straight late-game collapse: ‘They should be sitting at 4-0 right now!’

It takes a lot to surprise a Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback, but the New Orleans Saints found a way. Kurt Warner was stunned to see the Saints lose two games the same way in as many weeks — blowing late leads to the Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles, dropping their record to 2-2 on the season so far.

“They should be sitting at 4-0 right now!” Warner wrote from his official Twitter/X account, pointing out that both losses came down to similar situations. Just like Saints fans in the stadium seats and at home, he’s seen too many big plays given up in man-to-man coverage in the game’s final minute.

Unfortunately, this has been a trend for the Saints under Dennis Allen. The team hasn’t closed many tight games over the last few years. They’re 0-4 when holding onto a narrow lead late in regulation since 2022. It’s something they must figure out, and quickly, or else it’ll bring Allen’s tenure to an end.
