HALFTIME REPORT: Alabama survives rough first half, defense has issues to resolve

Alabama has the lead, but must play a more consistent game to close out.

Alabama looks to continue the win streak over the Tennessee Volunteers, which has lasted well over a decade, but they must first play a more disciplined style of football.

At the half, the Crimson Tide leads 21-14, but at one point lost the lead and was down by seven for a few minutes.

Star quarterback Bryce Young has played a solid game with 20 completions on 24 attempts for 207 yards and a touchdown. He also added a rushing touchdown, which helped give Alabama the lead.

Alabama’s run game, headlined by Brian Robinson, has proven mildly effective, with Robinson accumulating 13 carries, 58 yards and a single touchdown.

John Metchie has taken over as the team’s top wide receiver for the game, a position that often goes back and forth between him and Ohio State transfer Jameson Williams. Metchie has totaled six receptions for 63 yards and a lone touchdown.

Williams has a had a unique first half that was highlighted by a fumble in Tennessee territory. Overall, he has 4 receptions for 44 yards.

The defense has limited the Volunteers’ ground game, holding three ball carriers to 19 yards on only 11 carries.

Hendon Hooker has completed 11 of 15 passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns.

The Crimson Tide secondary has not looked as disciplined as they have this season, missing assignments and not being properly aligned, especially in the red zone.

Nick Saban will look to have his team set up for success in the second half, and needs to have them play the remaining two quarters of football with a want to win.

Here are five major takeaways from the first half of the SEC title game

Florida trails Alabama by more than two touchdowns entering the halftime lockerroom but Kyle Trask and Kadarius Toney came to play.

The first thirty minutes of the Southeastern Conference Championship Game are in and the Alabama Crimson Tide lead the Florida Gators by a score of 35-17 after an offensive showcase by both teams.

So far, the game has been pretty much what was generally expected, with ‘Bama’s offense being absolutely unstoppable while Florida has also managed to move the chains and put some points on the board as well. It has certainly been a fun half of football but the hopes of the Gator faithful are quickly slipping away as the Tide appears to have no real weaknesses to exploit.

Here is a look at the five main points from the first half of the SEC title game.

Halftime Report: Gators come out flat against LSU, trail at half

The story of the first half was QB Kyle Trask’s subpar performance giving up three turnovers en route to a touchdown deficit at the half.

The first 30 minutes of play are officially in the books and the Florida Gators trail the LSU Tigers, 24-17, in a tightly contested matchup in The Swamp on Saturday night.

The story of the game so far has been quarterback Kyle Trask‘s subpar performance in the first half; add on some defensive failures, and you have the recipe for an upset in the making. It did not help that Florida was also without their star tight end Kyle Pitts.

Here is a look at the key takeaways from the first half of play in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

Iron Bowl Halftime: Alabama rolls over Auburn at the half

Alabama has an 18 point lead over the Auburn Tigers at the half. A handful of touchdowns by Mac Jones, and some stellar defense…

The Alabama Crimson Tide seem to have full control over Bo Nix and the Auburn Tigers, despite Nick Saban not being present.

Offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian has Alabama in a good position to finish out strong, as the contest’s first half comes to a close with a score of 21-3.

Mac Jones is having an amazing day, completing nine of 13 passing attempts for 174 yards and three touchdowns. All three passes to result in scores for Alabama were thrown to different receivers: DeVonta Smith, Malachi Moore and Jahleel Billingsley.

Najee Harris has been contained, only rushing five times for 25 yards, but has also seen a one reception for an additional 25 yards.

Pete Golding and the Crimson Tide defense have held Bo Nix to a very ineffective first half in the air, only allowing 12 completions for 96 yards and an interception to close out the half.

On the ground, Auburn has not had much luck, 20 total carries for 57 yards.

There’s still an entire half remaining in the game for Auburn to stage a comeback; however, the same argument could be made for Alabama to extend the lead, essentially ending the game far before the four quarters conclude.

The biggest star of the first half is true-freshman defensive back Malachi Moore, who has an interception and a handful of big-time plays to help Alabama on the defensive side of the ball.

Five halftime notes: Gators lead at the half but Vandy put up a fight

Florida Gators football faces the Vanderbilt Commodores on the road and after the first half hold a 17-10 lead. Here are five reasons why.

The opening half of the football game between the Florida Gators and the Vanderbilt Commodores did not go quite how UF fans expected, with Vandy leading the game at the end of the first quarter, 10-7, despite Kyle Trask setting a new SEC record with his touchdown throw.

In the second quarter, the two teams traded a pair of punts before Florida’s offense started to click. The Gators tied the game on a field goal with under four minutes left, then took the lead on a fantastic catch by Trevon Grimes to give them a 17-10 lead heading into the halftime locker room.

Now that the first half is complete, let us look at the five major points from the opening thirty minutes.
