UFC on ESPN 43 gets late addition: Hailey Cowan vs. Tamires Vidal for San Antonio

Hailey Cowan has a UFC debut back on the books after a health scare canceled her first booking weeks ago.

After a health scare left her unsure of her immediate future, budding women’s bantamweight [autotag]Hailey Cowan[/autotag] has a promotional debut back on the books.

At UFC on ESPN 43, Cowan (7-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) will fight [autotag]Tamires Vidal[/autotag] (7-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) in a late addition to the card. The event takes place March 25 at AT&T Center in San Antonio.

Two people with knowledge of the matchup recently informed MMA Junkie of the booking but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Cowan, 31, was expected to debut at UFC Fight Night 220 on Feb. 25. However, she withdrew from the bout hours prior to weigh-ins. After her scheduled opponent Ailin Perez criticized the withdrawal, Cowan revealed she suffered from an ovarian cyst rupture that landed her in the hospital. Cowan is a “Dana White’s Contender Series” signee with pro wins in Invicta FC and LFA among other promotions.

Vidal, 24, added a big-time highlight to her reel in her promotional debut at UFC Fight Night 214 in November when she scored a flying knee knockout of opponent Ramona Pascual. The victory extended her winning streak to six.

With the addition, the UFC on ESPN 43 lineup includes:

  • Holly Holm vs. Yana Santos
  • Maycee Barber vs. Andrea Lee

Hailey Cowan reveals ovarian cyst rupture forced withdrawal from UFC Fight Night 220

Hailey Cowan’s reason to pull out of her UFC Fight Night 220 bout with Ailin Perez sounds like a pretty serious one.

[autotag]Hailey Cowan[/autotag]’s reason to pull out of her UFC Fight Night 220 bout with [autotag]Ailin Perez[/autotag] sounds like a pretty serious one.

Cowan’s (7-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) withdrawal this past weekend was ruled as being due to illness by the promotion, but the Dana White Contender Series alum revealed that she experienced an ovarian cyst rupture the night before weigh-ins, which caused a lot of bleeding.

She explained what happened Tuesday night in an Instagram post..

“I had an ovarian cyst rupture in the night before weigh-ins. I lost a lot of blood and the doctors pulled me,” Cowan wrote. “I was on weight and ready to go. Super unfortunate but we will rebook ASAP. Apologies to the fans and my opponent, but this was beyond my control.”

Cowan was awarded a UFC contract when she scored a decision win over Claudia Leite in August through Dana White’s Contender Series. Her opponent Perez (7-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) fell short in her UFC debut this past September in Paris when she was submitted by Stephanie Egger.

In a recent interview with MMA Junkie, Perez expressed frustration at the last-minute fight cancellation after leaving her 5-year-old son in Argentina with her parents to train at MMA Masters in Florida.

Hailey Cowan isn’t sure what Dana White meant by ‘it factor,’ but she’s thankful for UFC contract

Dana White wasn’t thrilled by Hailey Cowan’s split decision win but decided to award her a UFC contract anyway.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Dana White[/autotag] wasn’t thrilled with [autotag]Hailey Cowan[/autotag]’s performance, but he decided to award her a UFC contract anyway.

Cowan (7-2) edged out Claudia Leite by split decision Tuesday at Dana White’s Contender Series 50 and had to listen to White’s tentative analysis of her fight before he decided that he liked everything about her.

The 30-year-old got to show off her clinch work, which is her comfort zone, but admits she was hesitant to hang out in the clinch for too long to not engage in a boring fight.

“I know what it means, but I also don’t know what that means, but I’m thankful for it,” Cowan told reporters, including MMA Junkie, of the term “it factor” that White used to describe her. “I’ll take the ‘it factor.’ They don’t like the clinch, and I love the clinch, and I do a lot of damage in the clinch. So even this fight, I wasn’t able to hang out in the clinch very long, because I was worried about impressing him, and I didn’t want him to consider that boring.

“But I’ve never even been warned in the clinch to get to work. I’m always very, very active, so I probably would have been able to get a finish if I would have gotten that clinch more and did the damage that I did in Round 1, but I was very, very worried that he was not gonna like that.”

As for what Cowan wants next, she hopes her next fight won’t be at the UFC Apex.

“I don’t like the silence,” Cowan said with a laugh. “I was a college athlete, and college sports is very loud. I love the loud arenas. I would love to fight in Texas. I’m a Texan. You cut me open, and I bleed little lone stars. I would love to fight in Texas. That would be the dream.”

Ex-champ Damon Jackson meets Mauro Chaulet in LFA 83 main event

A former champion will return to LFA in March to try to climb his way back to title contention.

A former champion will return to LFA in March to try to climb his way back to title contention.

Ex-featherweight champ [autotag]Damon Jackson[/autotag] (16-3-1) is set to headline LFA 83 against Brazil’s [autotag]Mauro Chaulet[/autotag] (14-6), the promotion announced Wednesday. In the co-feature, [autotag]Matt Dixon[/autotag] (8-0) puts his unbeaten record on the line in a welterweight bout against [autotag]Justin Patterson[/autotag] (11-5).

Plus, acrobatics All-American [autotag]Hailey Cowan[/autotag] (4-1) will be on the card against a bantamweight opponent still to be announced, [autotag]Emeka Ifekandu[/autotag] (6-3) meets [autotag]Austin Lingo[/autotag] (7-0) at featherweight, and [autotag]Austen Lane[/autotag] (6-2) takes on [autotag]Vernon Lewis[/autotag] (7-4) in a heavyweight bout.

LFA 83 takes place March 6 at The Bomb Factory in Dallas. The card streams on UFC Fight Pass.

“Damon Jackson is our former featherweight champion and he will be looking to gain a record-setting seventh LFA win in front of his home crowd, while Mauro Chaulet is looking to build off the momentum of his debut win for us in September by winning the biggest fight of career,” LFA CEO Ed Soares stated. “This is an exciting main event with a lot on the line for both men.”

Jackson vacated his featherweight title to take a shot at the PFL’s $1 million 2019 season. But that experiment lasted just 10 seconds. Jackson’s five-fight winning streak – all finishes – was snapped by Movlid Khaybulaev with a jumping knee in May 2019. The 10-second KO was the only PFL appearance for Jackson, who also had three fights in the UFC.

Chaulet has three straight wins. This past September, he made his promotional debut with a split call over Samson Phommabout in the LFA 75 co-main event. That was the Brazilian’s first fight in more than five years.

The LFA 83 card includes:

  • Damon Jackson vs. Mauro Chaulet
  • Matt Dixon vs. Justin Patterson
  • Hailey Cowan vs. TBA
  • Emeka Ifekandu vs. Austin Lingo
  • Austen Lane vs. Vernon Lewis
