Jay Johnson confirms top LSU baseball transfer pitcher addition suffered torn ACL

The Tigers could be without one of their top offseason additions for the 2025 season.

The LSU baseball team is still several months from the beginning of the 2025 season, but when the spring rolls around, it could be without one of its top offseason additions.

Transfer pitcher [autotag]Deven Sheerin[/autotag] has suffered a torn ACL, according to coach Jay Johnson. The injury is not new, as Johnson said it occurred during the summer, but it casts doubt on his availability for the 2025 season. Johnson said there currently is not a timetable for his return.

It’s a major loss for an LSU pitching staff that lost quite a few pieces from last season including starters [autotag]Gage Jump[/autotag], [autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag] and [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] as well as top bullpen arm [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag].

Sheerin, a native of Reading, Pennsylvania, earned MAAC Rookie of the Year and First Team All-MAAC honors as a freshman at Mount St. Mary in 2024. He finished the season with a 4.76 ERA and 6-5 record while striking out 109 batters compared to just 32 walks.

If Sheerin is not able to go by the start of the season, the Tigers will have to lean on other arms in a talented transfer pitcher class that also includes [autotag]Anthony Eyanson[/autotag], [autotag]Jacob Mayers[/autotag], [autotag]Chandler Dorsey[/autotag] and [autotag]Zac Cowan[/autotag].

Top LSU bullpen option Griffin Herring drafted by Yankees in 6th round

Jay Johnson previously said Griffin Herring would be a weekend starter if he returned to LSU in 2025.

With the 181st pick of the 2024 MLB draft, the [autotag]New York Yankees[/autotag] selected [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag], a left-handed pitcher from LSU.

After taking [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] in the third round of the draft, the Yankees double up on LSU pitchers as they take the player who was possibly the best pitcher on LSU’s roster last season, [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag].

Herring finished last season with a 6-1 record and a 1.79 ERA. He struck out 67 hitters and walked 13 over 50.1 innings of work. [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] stated that if Herring decided to come back next Spring he would be one of the Tigers’ starting pitchers.

That plan may have now gone out the window with the Yankees picking him in Round 6. The slot value for the 181st pick is $339,600. Herring still has the option to sign with New York or to stay in Baton Rouge. The ball is in his court.

LSU lands elite UC San Diego pitcher transfer Anthony Eyanson

The rich got even richer on Wednesday night as LSU added another prized pitcher to its No. 1-ranked class.

LSU fans who stayed up until the late hours on Wednesday night were treated to some huge news from the transfer portal front.

UC San Diego right-handed pitcher transfer [autotag]Anthony Eyanson[/autotag] committed to the Tigers out of the portal, adding a player with starter stuff to an already loaded haul of transfer pitchers. Eyanson visited LSU last weekend, and now he’s joining a transfer class that is already ranked No. 1 in America.

In 82 innings for the Toreros as a sophomore in 2024, he finished with a 6-2 record and 3.07 ERA while striking out 85 batters and walking just 24.

The Tigers are set to lose quite a few arms from this past season, including starters [autotag]Gage Jump[/autotag] and [autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag], in all likelihood. [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag] is also a pro prospect as is [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag], who entered the transfer portal and won’t be returning, regardless.

Eyanson could prove to be a Friday night starter for LSU, and he’s sure to be an instant impact player in 2025.

2 LSU Tigers earn D1Baseball All-American honors

Luke Holman and Griffin Herring earned Second Team All-American honors.

D1Baseball recently released its list of All-Americans for the 2024 season. Two LSU Tigers have been named second-team All-Americans and both of the players are pitchers.

[autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag] and [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag] are the two Tigers who have earned second-team All-American honors. Holman had his best year collegiately as he finished the season with a 9-4 record and a 2.75 ERA. He struck out 127 hitters while only walking 33 in that span. He has put himself in a position to hear his name called early in the 2024 MLB draft.

Herring was the best pitcher on the staff this season finishing with a 6-1 record and a 1.79 ERA. He struck out 67 hitters, walked 13, and had six saves. If Herring returns next season, he will be one of the starting pitchers on the roster but he finds himself as one of the top 250 players in the 2024 MLB Draft Prospect List.

Both of these guys were pivotal to LSU’s success this year and both of them have a bright future ahead of them.

Three LSU Tigers earn All-American honors from Baseball America

All three of these guys are likely to hear their names called in the 2024 MLB draft.

Baseball America has released its list of the 2024 baseball All-Americans. Three LSU Tigers have made the list.

[autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag], [autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag], and [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] are the three Tigers who have been named All-Americans by Baseball America. One Tiger was named a second-team All-American while the other two were both third-team All-Americans.

Herring earned second-team All-American honors after being the best pitcher on the pitching staff this year. He finished the season with a 6-1 record and a 1.79 ERA. In 50.1 innings of work, he struck out 67 hitters while only walking 13. In his last outing of the year, he pitched a gem against Wofford and earned a win.

Holman had a great season on the bayou as he finished with a 9-4 record and a 2.75 ERA. In 91.2 innings of work, he struck out 127 hitters and only walked 33. His last appearance of the season came in a loss to North Carolina in the [autotag]Chapel Hill Regional[/autotag].

White had a good season as he finished with a .330 batting average with 12 doubles, 24 homers, and 70 RBI. All three of these guys are likely to hear their names called in the [autotag]2024 MLB Draft[/autotag].

LSU pitcher Griffin Herring impresses during summer ball start

Griffin Herring finished the game after pitching 3.2 innings and allowing zero runs and zero hits as he struck out three hitters and walked two.

After an impressive season for Jay Johnson and the LSU Tigers this Spring, [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag] has transitioned to Summer ball where he is playing for the [autotag]Chatham Anglers[/autotag] in the [autotag]Cape Cod League[/autotag].

Today, he started for the Anglers against Yarmouth Dennis and he was impressive. Herring finished the game after pitching 3.2 innings and allowing zero runs and zero hits as he struck out three hitters and walked two.

Herring was used as a reliever last season for the Tigers and was a finalist for the Stopper of the Year Award. He participated in the MLB Combine to get some feedback on what his stock may be in the upcoming [autotag]MLB draft[/autotag].

LSU head coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] has already said that if Herring decides to come back to Baton Rouge next Spring he will be one of the weekend starters for the Tigers.

I believe Herring has the skills to be the ace for LSU if he comes back next year.

LSU baseball lands Indiana State RHP transfer Luke Hayden

LSU has now landed two transfers from Indiana State this offseason.

The pipeline from Terre Haute, Indiana, to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is not done providing for [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] and the LSU Tigers. LSU just landed another player from the Indiana State Sycamores thanks to the transfer portal.

[autotag]Luke Hayden[/autotag] is a 6-foot-1, 195-pound, right-handed pitcher from Bloomington, Indiana. He spent his first two collegiate seasons with the Indiana Hoosiers before transferring to Indiana State to play this Spring.

Hayden finished the season with a 7-2 record and a 3.81 ERA. He pitched a total of 78 innings and struck out 91 hitters while walking 47. He will join his former teammate [autotag]Luis Hernandez[/autotag] who transferred from Indiana State to Baton Rouge. Those two could form a battery in the same way they did for the Sycamores.

So far Johnson has done an incredible job landing some great players out of the portal. If he can get a guy like [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag] back as well next year could be special.

3 LSU baseball players named NCBWA All-Americans

Tommy White, Luke Holman and Griffin Herring all took home second-team honors.

It was a disappointing conclusion to the season for LSU baseball, which overcame an 0-5 start in SEC series to earn the No. 2 seed in the Chapel Hill Regional. The Tigers took host North Carolina to a decisive Game 7 but ultimately fell in extra innings and missed the chance to host a super regional.

In spite of that finish, LSU had several players turn in impressive performances this season. So impressive, in fact, that three of them were named to the NCBWA All-American teams. [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag], [autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag] and [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag] all earned Second Team honors.

White, a junior transfer from NC State who has been key to the Tigers’ success over the last two seasons, finished No. 5 in the SEC this season in hits, No. 6 in total bases (178), No. 7 in homers and No. 7 in RBI. He also has 75 career home runs, which ranks eighth all-time in Division I.

Holman, meanwhile, came from Alabama this season. Expected to be the ace, he settled into a Day 2 role but ultimately lived up to the hype, finishing with a 9-4 record and a 2.75 ERA in 2024 while appearing in 91.2 innings (16 starts) with 33 walks and 127 strikeouts. He held opposing batters to a .174 average.

Herring was one of the top bullpen arms this season, posting a 6-1 record and 1.79 ERA. He finished with six saves, 13 walks and 67 strikeouts while holding opponents to a .215 batting average.

White and Holman are likely first-round picks and should be moving on, while Herring is draft-eligible but could return, where he would likely earn a weekend starting spot in 2025.

Jay Johnson discusses LSU baseball’s upcoming draft decisions

LSU would get a big boost if players like Jared Jones and Griffin Herring elect to return.

Per usual, LSU baseball expects to have more than a few of its players selected when the MLB draft rolls around this summer.

Last year, [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] and [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] were the first and second overall picks. That high in the draft, the choice to go pro is easy. But as you get into the later rounds, players are faced with a choice — head to the minor leagues or come back to school.

“We’ll have as few as five and as many as 11, probably, that could get drafted from this roster,” [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] told the media, “I would guess the time the 2024 draft ends, we’ll have the most players drafted in the country over the last two years. We’re here to develop guys for professional baseball and no one does that better.”

LSU’s top three prospects are [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag], [autotag]Gage Jump[/autotag] and [autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag]. It would be a major surprise if any of those three returned to campus, but there are other names worth keeping an eye on.

[autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] is a draft eligible sophomore whose power tool is sure to grab the attention of some MLB organizations. According to MLB.com, Jones is the No. 119 ranked prospect in the draft.

There’s also pitcher [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag], who ranks No. 156 on the MLB.com draft board.

Herring excelled for LSU as a reliever in 2024, but Johnson said Herring would have a spot in next year’s weekend rotation.

Jones and Herring will have their chance to turn pro, but Johnson suggests you shouldn’t rule out a return for them and LSU’s other prospects.

“None of them are in a hurry to get out of here and I think they know their value here is strong,” Johnson said.

If key players return, along with LSU’s additions in the transfer portal, expect the Tigers to be back in contention for a trip to Omaha in 2025.

LSU baseball’s Griffin Herring nominated for Stopper of the Year

One of LSU’s best pitchers this season has been named a finalist for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year award.

One of LSU’s best pitchers this season has been named a finalist for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year award. That player is [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag].

Herring was phenomenal for the Tigers this season, finishing the year with a 6-1 record with a 1.79 ERA. He appeared in 21 games, pitched 50.1 innings, and struck out 67 hitters while only walking 13.

Herring is one of the final 10 players for the esteemed trophy. He joins Ben Abeldt (TCU), Evan Aschenbeck (Texas A&M), Ethan Bates (Louisiana Tech), Charlie Beilenson (Duke), Mason Burns (Western Kentucky), Bridger Holmes (Oregon State), Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman (East Carolina), Izaak Martinez (UC San Diego) and Connor Thurman (San Diego).

[autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] has gone on record saying Herring will likely be a starting pitcher for the Tigers next Spring but there is a chance Herring could leave for the MLB Draft. His draft stock skyrocketed this season and he could easily find himself as a draft pick in the earlier rounds.
