Greg Studrawa out as Ohio State offensive line coach

ICYMI – Greg Studrawa has been relieved of his duties as O-line coach at Ohio State.

Ryan Day continues to make moves on the Ohio State coaching staff. First, he hired Jim Knowles away from Oklahoma State to be the Buckeye’s defensive coordinator. Then news broke that Matt Barnes was leaving OSU to become the Memphis Tigers defensive coordinator. And now, Day has relieved offensive-line coach Greg Studrawa of his duties.

Studrawa has been with the Buckeyes since 2016 and has had a pretty good run in Columbus. In six years time, he produced two Remington Trophy winners in Billy Price and Pat Elflein, as well as All-Americans Wyatt Davis and Michael Jordan.

With a plethora of talent, Studrawa went a little out of the box this year and started four tackles on the offensive line in an attempt to get the best players on the field. Some would question if the strategy worked or not as it seemed OSU struggled to run the ball from time to time and were exposed in Ann Arbor on Nov. 27.

Newly committed lineman, Carson Hinzman, said that his pledge to the Buckeyes has not swayed. He seems to be all in with Ryan Day And Ohio State.

Many believe current UCLA offensive coordinator, Justin Frye, is the front runner to replace Studrawa. He has been on staff with Ryan Day in stops at Temple and Boston College.

Would Frye leave an offensive coordinator title at a power five school to become a position coach? We all know money talks and friendships can go a long way in this business. Kevin Wilson has also been rumored for head coaching jobs at other programs, so it’s certainly possible that the coordinator position could come open in the coming years.

Ryan Day clearly wasn’t happy with how the season turned out and is making some moves to address the frustration. Studrawa did a fine job in Columbus, but it was probably time for a change. I doubt he’ll have a hard time landing somewhere else.

We’ll let you know when Day makes a move on a new offensive line coach.

Ohio State offensive line coach Greg Studrawa provides update on the trenches

Ohio State offensive line coach Greg Studrawa met with the media today on a Zoom session to preview the guys in the trenches for 2020.

It’s game week folks and that means we’ve got plenty of media opportunities coming out of Ohio State. Earlier on Tuesday, head coach Ryan Day jumped on a Zoom call to answer a myriad of questions from reporters. But Day wasn’t alone. Offensive line coach Greg Studrawa also made himself available to provide updates on what he sees from the guys in the trenches.

It was an honest and revealing update with a couple of players being named starters on the line. And in case you want to get caught up, you can visit the below tweet sent out by the Ohio State Football Twitter account where it links to the full interview on OhioStateBuckeyes.com.

In it, you’ll hear Studrawa talk about the needed depth on the line, what’s impressed him most about some of the players that have stepped up, comparisons between this year and last year’s offensive line, what’s challenging about facing Nebraska, and more.

With Harry Miller and Nicholas Petit-Frere being named starters, Ohio State’s offensive line is set

With the naming of Harry Miller and Nicholas Petit-Frere as starters Tuesday, the offensive line is now set and ready to maul opponents.

A football team will only go as far as its offensive line takes it. The Buckeyes are projected to have one of the best groups in the country this year, but there were a couple of positions still up for grabs with right tackle and the left guard spots open.

Now, however, according to offensive line coach Greg Studrawa, those spots have been nailed down by Nicholas Petit-Frere at right tackle and Harry Miller at left guard.

Studwara appeared with head coach Ryan Day in a Zoom session with reporters Tuesday and had glowing things to say about both men with the announcement. He was especially impressed with the development and added strength of former five-star talent Petit-Frere.

“He’s done a great job during this pandemic,” Studrawa said. “He has really changed his body. He’s bigger, he’s stronger, he’s 315 pounds. He’s as strong as he ever was, and his offseason, his development, really pushed him to the top of that position.”

As for Miller, he moves over from the center position to get the five best guys on the field. He too has shown offseason growth and is reaching the potential of the accolades that preceded him. He was a monster in the weight room, with Studrawa saying his strength “blew the numbers away” from what he was doing in the weight room before the pandemic hit.

“His development during this time was just critical,” Studrawa continued.

So, if you’re keeping track, the starting five offensive line group consists of the following:

Left Tackle – Thayer Munford
Left Guard – Harry Miller
Center – Josh Myers
Right Guard – Wyatt Davis
Right Tackle – Nicholas Petit-Frere

That’s exactly the starting five we pegged when we published our version of what the entire starting team could look like just recently.

Get ready for the mauling of opponents to begin.
