B/R: Greg Rousseau is Bills’ ‘most promising building block’ in 2024

B/R: Greg Rousseau is #Bills’ ‘most promising building block’ in 2024:

The Buffalo Bills believe in Greg Rousseau. So does Bleacher Report.

The Bills took the fifth-year option on Rousseau’s rookie contract which he will be playing on next season. The team’s first-round selection at the 2021 NFL draft has shown promise in his career, recording eight sacks in 2022 and adding another five a year ago.

The hope in Buffalo will be another big step forward next season when Rousseau is playing on that part of his contract. Fellow defensive lineman Ed Oliver previously did that.

In terms of B/R, the outlet named every NFL team’s “most promising building block” ahead of next year. Rousseau was the choice.

B/R’s breakdown on Rousseau can be found below:

Tight end Dalton Kincaid deserves a mention, but Greg Rousseau is a rising player at a premium position. The edge-rusher has collected 17 sacks with 67 pressures through three seasons on the Bills. Buffalo recently picked up Rousseau’s fifth-year option, tying him to the organization into the 2025 season. Based on his current trajectory, Rousseau will deserve an extension in the near future.

ESPN: Bills should lock up Greg Rousseau before training camp

ESPN: #Bills should lock up Greg Rousseau before training camp:

The Buffalo Bills underwent a significant roster turnover during the 2024 offseason, with many familiar faces heading to other NFL teams and new ones suiting up in Orchard Park.

With most of the Bills’ needs having been addressed in free agency and the draft, ESPN had named which addition might still remain ahead of the 2024 season.

In it, ESPN writer Aaron Schatz suggests one final move for all 32 NFL teams that each can make in late June or early July that will put them in a better situation for the upcoming season and/or the ones beyond.

This includes contract extensions and last-minute signing or trade suggestions.

So which does he pick for the Bills? Does it involve talent on offense or defense? A stop-gap veteran on a short-term deal or a multi-year pact type of player? A familiar face or someone new?

Here’s the player and move that ESPN  picked for Buffalo ahead of their 2024 campaign…

Buffalo Bills

Extend edge rusher Gregory Rousseau

The Bills’ roster doesn’t have many clear holes, so it’s time to lock up some players in their primes. Rousseau is an important part of the Bills’ pass rush, with five sacks and 34 pressures last season. He is excellent against the run, ranking ninth among edge rushers in average yards per run tackle.

This would be a shrewd move for the Bills, Rousseau’s development has been steady year-to-year, he’s an impact player and a key part of their defense and pass rush.

He hasn’t had a monster year yet, but he could this season or in those that lie ahead in his young career. An extension now that Buffalo has reworked its cap space for the future would lock him into a sensible deal for both sides without overpaying.

Rousseau also appears to be part of the team’s long-term plans on defense, so getting a deal done with the 24-year-old ahead of the season to extend his deal through more of the prime years of his young career makes sense.

The team picked up the fifth-year option on his rookie deal in April to already extend his pact and buy them time to get a new agreement done.

Under those terms, Rousseau would make $2.3M this upcoming season and $13.4 million in 2025. Suffice it to say Buffalo will look to extend him to a new multi-year deal.

He had eight sacks as a rookie and five last season and will look to help put up or increase those numbers to replace the productivity in the pass rush filled last season by Leonard Floyd who had 10 sacks but departed in free agency.

Bills pick up fifth-year option on Greg Rousseau

#Bills pick up fifth-year option on Greg Rousseau:

The Buffalo Bills have officially picked up the fifth-year option on the rookie contract for defensive end Greg Rousseau.

The update comes after general manager Brandon Beane stated during the NFL’s annual owners meetings in March that the team planned on doing so.

“I don’t see any reason why we wouldn’t do it,” the GM said.

The deadline for Buffalo to pick up the option on Rousseau was on Thursday. However, the option year is not until 2025.

Rousseau will make $13.4 million in 2025. Under the usual parameters of his rookie deal, Rousseau will make $2.3M this upcoming season.

Rousseau, 24, was Buffalo’s first-round pick in 2021. Only prospect selected in the first round during each year’s draft have the fifth-year team option attached to their contract. All other rookie deals are four-year contracts.

Leonard Floyd led the Bills with 10 sacks in 2023, meanwhile Rousseau put up five after an eight-sack rookie year.

Floyd left Buffalo for the San Francisco 49ers in free agency this offseason. Rousseau, Von Miller and AJ Epenesa, after he re-signed this offseason, will be tasked with leading the line for the Bills off the edge next season.

How much will it cost the Bills to pick up fifth-year option on Greg Rousseau?

How much will it cost the #Bills to pick up fifth-year option on Greg Rousseau?

The Buffalo Bills have until May 2 to decide what their next move with Greg Rousseau will be.

The pass rusher was the team’s first-round pick at the 2021 NFL draft. In 2024, he’s entering the final year of his four-year rookie contract.

However, the Bills have until early May to decide whether or not the team will exercise the fifth-year option on his rookie contract. Doing so will keep Rousseau around through the 2025 season and will give the player a nice pay day as well.

That total pay day varies on a position-by-position basis. A quarterback would naturally make more than a specialist. The number of Pro Bowl honors for a player (Rousseau had none) also factors in.

So that begs the question, what about a defensive end like Rousseau? Every position’s option total for teams can be found below:

Report card: Bills top Steelers, 31-17

Report card: #Bills top #Steelers, 31-17:

The Buffalo Bills have worked their way through the Pittsburgh Steelers and are now onto the Divisional round of the AFC postseason.

Buffalo put together an effort that was strong throughout the contest. But not all three phases. While not a team that has covered the spread often this season, Pittsburgh was behind it throughout most of the game because of a strong effort up-and-down the Bills roster.

With that, here’s Bills Wire’s report card following the team’s 31-17 Wild Card win:

Stock up, stock down following the Bills’ AFC Wild-Card win over the Steelers

Here is Bills Wire’s stock report following Monday AFC Wild Card win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Buffalo Bills made it back to the AFC playoffs in one of the more unlikely fashions as they finished the season with five-straight victories to clinch the AFC East title.

The season didn’t stop there as they still had to keep winning as their main goal is getting to the Super Bowl. That started with Monday’s AFC Wild Card game against the Pittsburgh Steelers via a 31-17 win.

To make this game more interesting than it was already as a win-or-go-home scenario, this contest was originally supposed to take place on Sunday. However, due to the dangerous conditions in Buffalo over the weekend, the NFL postponed the game until Monday.

The change in schedule didn’t seem to affect the Bills in a negative way as they took it to the Steelers from the beginning with a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.

Here is the stock report following the playoff win over Pittsburgh:
