CB Greg Newsome II hires Drew Rosenhaus as agent, happy in Cleveland

Despite hiring Rosenhaus, Newsome is happy in Cleveland

Usually, the hiring of super agent Drew Rosenhaus has been bad news for the Cleveland Browns. And this is what third-year cornerback Greg Newsome II did today. There was speculation that Newsome II wanted out of Cleveland after being forced into the slot in 2022, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter has reported that Newsome is excited to play for new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz and is happy in Cleveland.

Newsome II will be in attendance as the Browns begin their offseason programming on Monday as well, Schefter reports. The Browns have never met a trade request of any player under Andrew Berry, and they certainly are not going to trade away secondary talent.

Newsome’s rookie season was Pro Bowl-worthy, and under Schwartz, there is hope he can return to those heights in year three.

Who could be the first Browns player to wear the number 0?

Who will be the first Browns player to sport the number 0?

The NFL owners voted to allow players to be able to wear the number 0 on the playing field, beginning this season. So now the question has to be asked: which player for the Cleveland Browns will look the best wearing the new digit? New additions to the roster, like wide receiver Elijah Moore, have the obvious advantage, as they do not have to buy out their remaining jerseys the way that current players do.

However, there are current players on the roster for the Browns that would look phenomenal wearing the number 0 in the brown and orange. Here are four players that would look phenomenal sporting the newly allowed number for the Browns.

Report: Broncos not asking for CB Greg Newsome in return for Jerry Jeudy

Greg Newsome II has not been included in any trade talks for Jerry Jeudy

The talk surrounding the Cleveland Browns and wide receiver Jerry Jeudy has been all of the talks the past few days as the team continues to pester the Denver Broncos. And now it has others speculating about what a potential trade package could look like for the former first round wide receiver. One consistent theme is to include third-year cornerback Greg Newsome II in trade talks. However, according to The OBR’s Brad Stainbrook, there have been no talks involving the cornerback.

The most common sense move is to package a couple of picks from this year’s draft, including the 42nd overall pick. With six day-three picks, it makes sense to throw in one of their extra fourth or fifth rounders to sweeten the pot for the Broncos.

Young and promising core defenders want their leader back in free agency

A couple of promising third-year defenders want their leader back.

As NFL free agency treks along for the active Cleveland Browns, a couple of young and promising core members of their defense are advocating for the team to re-sign Anthony Walker Jr. Both cornerback Greg Newsome II and linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah have taken to Twitter to make their feeling known on their desire to see their leader return to the Browns in free agency.

Walker Jr. has been known as a glue guy in the locker room and one of the team’s best leaders. As the Browns look to transition to a new regime under defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, bringing back a positive voice is a necessary idea for the team to have as they look to add another linebacker.

Beyond free agency: Browns must get leap out of young talent already on the roster

Developing the young players currently on the roster is more important long term than finding new guys in free agency.

With little doubt, the Cleveland Browns have to capitalize this offseason to improve their roster, specifically on the defensive side of the football. Both through free agency and the 2023 NFL Draft, the Browns have an opportunity to add talent, both veterans and rookies, to their roster as they look to scratch and claw back to the playoffs in 2023.

However, beyond the players they may look to add to their roster this offseason, a bigger question mark and priority for the Browns will be the development of the young players already on their roster. They got a great rookie season out of rookie cornerback Martin Emerson Jr., second-year players Greg Newsome II (even while playing out of position) and Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah continued to flash, but the Browns need more from their youngsters on rookie contracts to capitalize on their window.

The Browns need to overhaul their defensive line. This is no secret to anyone who was even a bystander to Cleveland football last year. However, if they can get progression out of the likes of Alex Wright, Perrion Winfrey, and Isaiah Thomas in their defensive trenches, this will go a long way toward solidifying that unit long-term.

At this point, the Browns cannot afford to go into the 2023 season banking on the development of Wright, Winfrey, and Thomas along their defensive line. However, as they inevitably sign a few veterans this offseason in free agency, having the ability to sign them to just one-year deals as a stopgap would do wonders for their books as their cap number will continue to shrink into the future.

As Jim Schwartz now takes over as the defensive coordinator, and as these young players will get new position coaches this season, there is a hope that a new perspective and angle in coaching can jumpstart the development of the underachieving youngsters. This is a premise of the Browns’ age guardrail: draft young players so you have more time to develop. But this hinges on the coaching staff’s ability to develop.

Free agency is important. The NFL Draft is important. But being able to rely on their young players beyond 2023 to take over significant roles will be the biggest key to the long-term health of the Browns’ roster. And hopefully, the changes in leadership on the coaching staff can shock new life into these key pieces.

Greg Newsome II was lock-down in man coverage for the Browns in 2022

Newsome remained great in man coverage.

In 2022, second-year cornerback Greg Newsome II had a tough task as he transitioned to playing as the slot corner. There were some growing pains here and there but by the end of the season, he looked good. However, there was one thing that remained constant all season long and that’s his ability to lock down in man coverage.

Cleveland has a good problem on their hand with three talented corners on the roster. Newsome seems to not want to play in the slot and is clearly a better outside corner. It is clear that in man coverage is where Newsome thrives and with Jim Schwartz’s scheme he has a chance to really shine.

The team could end up moving one of their young players at the position but it is clear there isn’t anything wrong with Greg Newsome. Some think he had a down year and was trending in the wrong direction but the tape shows he has plenty of talent.

Greg Newsome II does not appear to like playing in the slot

Greg Newsome II does not want to play in the slot anymore.

The Cleveland Browns have a wealth of depth at the cornerback position, and as a result, they played Greg Newsome II in the slot to get Martin Emerson Jr. on the field in nickel and dime sets. It appears, however, that Newsome is not a fan of playing inside and would like to move back outside in 2023 under new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz.

Responding to a highlight video of his performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Newsome II left just a one-word quip of “outside.” The problem? The Browns have three talented cornerbacks, and one would get phased out if they were to bring on a full-time nickel. This means either Newsome II or Emerson could be flipped for a pick or another position of need, or the Browns could let them battle it out for reps. It will be an interesting offseason.
