Ravens take a step back in shocking 29-24 loss to the Browns in Week 8

Ravens take a step back in shocking 29-24 loss to the Browns in Week 8

Baltimore has a penchant for blowing late fourth-quarter leads, but on Sunday, the Ravens took a step back toward the inconsistent unit that lost two straight to start the season.

In what can only be described as a shocking loss, the Cleveland Browns had their most impactful performance without Deshaun Watson in a 29-24 victory over first-place Baltimore in Week 8.

Lamar Jackson started the game 6-6 passing but finished 23-38 passing, for 289 yards (7.6 avg), two touchdowns, and zero interceptions with a 101.8 rating. Just like Baltimore had their five-game winning streak snapped, star running back Derrick Henry came back to earth, rushing for only 73 yards (6.6 avg) and one touchdown on 11 carries.

After missing two practices during the week with an ankle injury, second-year wideout Zay Flowers posted another 100-yard game, logging seven catches for 115 yards on the afternoon.

Zach Orr’s defense played without two starters at cornerback, and Jameis Winston carved up the Ravens. The former Heisman Trophy winner went 23-38 passing for 334 yards and three touchdowns.

The Browns took the lead when Winston threw a 38-yard touchdown pass — his third of the game — to Cedric Tillman with 59 seconds left as Cleveland erased weeks of frustration.

Baltimore will now look to regroup with Bo Nix and the upstart Broncos heading to M&T Bank Stadium in Week 9.

What is Greg Newsome II hinting at?

The Browns are set to take on the Cowboys in Week 1, and it looks like they’ll be getting Greg Newsome II back on the field.

As the Cleveland Browns get set to take on the Dallas Cowboys in their Week 1 matchup, cornerback Greg Newsome II seems to be hinting at his return to the field.

Suffering a groin injury away from the facility, Newsome II was placed on the Non-Football Injury list at the start of training camp and did not practice all summer long. Slated to enter his third season as the starting nickel cornerback in Cleveland, the Browns need to get him on the field against the talented wide receivers the Cowboys will throw against them.

As the Browns are making decisions to trim their roster, Newsome II tweeted out a gif including some exciting dance moves. This seems to indicate his return is near.

However, the timing as the Browns are looking to get their roster down from 90 players to 53 is a bit concerning as well. There were rumors that teams like the Detroit Lions had called about potentially acquiring Newsome at the start of the new league year. Could the Browns have traded their former first round pick to clear a space in a crowded cornerback room?

What hinders this thought, however, is that Newsome II cannot be traded while he is on the NFI list. More than likely, Newsome II is hinting at his return to the field after having surgery on his groin at the start of training camp.

Browns: Greg Newsome II, Dalvin Tomlinson start training camp with surgery

Two defensive starters will begin training camp under the needle.

Prior to the start of training camp, the Cleveland Browns placed seven players on their injured lists (either PUP or NFI). Two of those players were defensive starters in cornerback Greg Newsome II and defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski announced after their first training camp practice on Thursday that both players had started their offseason with surgery. Newsome had surgery on his hamstring, while Tomlinson was scheduled to have a knee scope on Thursday.

The head coach is hopeful both players will be ready for Week 1 when the Dallas Cowboys come to town.

It’s a great thing the Browns have stacked up depth at both the defensive tackle and cornerback positions. In the absence of Tomlinson, Shelby Harris, Maurice Hurst, and second round rookie Mike Hall Jr. will get the chance to step up. Second-year cornerback Cameron Mitchell and the plethora of cornerbacks will have an opportunity for more snaps until Newsome returns to the field.

All 32 NFL teams (including Denzel Ward, Martin Emerson Jr., and the Browns) ranked by their cornerbacks

The Browns have a dynamic trio of cornerbacks, but where do they rank among the rest of the league?

Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz came in and transformed the defense of the Cleveland Browns into the top unit in the NFL in just one season. And a big reason for that is due to the trust he can put into Denzel Ward, Martin Emerson Jr., and the rest of the secondary to line up and do their job.

The Browns run more cover-1 than any team in the NFL, and they can do that because Ward and Emerson are not afraid to line up at the line of scrimmage and punch the man across from them in the face. They even have another first round pick in Greg Newsome II patrolling the nickel, giving them a formidable alliance of cornerbacks to put their trust in. This allows for pass rushers to get home as well.

Where does ESPN’s Mike Clay have the Browns’ cornerback room ranked among the rest of the NFL, however? We take a deep look now:

Browns host girls high school flag football championship in Cleveland

The event took place in Cleveland Browns Stadium

The high school girls’ flag football championships took place in Cleveland Browns Stadium this year, with 28 teams participating in the competition. Greg Newsome II was among the group from the Browns that helped run the event, and he spoke about it afterward.

Newsome talked about how the event has grown this year, with more teams than last year with multiple teams returning to play again. He talked about how great it is to be a part of something like this and how much fun the participants had with Mayfield taking home the championship.

Also in attendance for the Browns were head coach Kevin Stefanski, special teamer Justin Hardee Sr., and assistant coaches Duce Staley, Callie Brownson, and Ashton Grant.

It’s great to see the Browns put on events like this to encourage kids to get active and enjoy the sport at a young age. The Browns are back in action this weekend with rookie minicamp in Berea.

Browns pick up fifth-year option of CB Greg Newsome II

Newsome II is locked in Cleveland through 2025.

The Cleveland Browns have locked in cornerback Greg Newsome II through 2025, officially picking up his fifth-year option.

The price tag on Newsome’s fifth-year, which will hit the books in 2025, is set at $13.37 million. The Browns now have all three of their starting cornerbacks, Newsome, Denzel Ward, and Martin Emerson Jr., under contract through 2025.

General manager Andrew Berry values defensive back depth more than any other position. While Newsome II was a favorite trade target this offseason from many in Cleveland, shipping off a starting defensive back is not something Berry was eager to do.

Even Ward came out and spoke in favor of keeping the Browns’ cornerback room together earlier this month. The Browns continue to add young talent to the room as well, drafting Cameron Mitchell last year (who played valuable snaps as a rookie) and South Dakota defensive back Myles Harden this year.

Running back the best defensive unit in the NFL a year ago, the Browns maintain continuity in their cornerback room as well.

Browns will not trade CB Greg Newsome II, set to pick up his fifth-year option

The Cleveland Browns were not interested in trading Greg Newsome II during the 2024 NFL draft. The team will pick up his fifth-year option.

Andrew Berry and the Browns had no interest in trading cornerback Greg Newsome II during the NFL draft. Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reported the Browns will be picking up the former first-round pick’s fifth-year option.

Newsome was a popular trade candidate for fans and other off-season speculators heading into the draft. The Browns have three great cornerbacks, but Newsome is cast as the odd man out. Newsome is an outside cornerback forced to play the slot role. He lacks the physicality when fitting the run to be an elite cornerback in that role. Newsome is a premiere coverage corner and his potential will never be reached in the slot role. Naturally, people thought the Browns would part ways with the cornerback and recoup draft capital lost in other trades.

It became clear the Browns would not trade Newsome after the Chiefs failed to get more than a third-round pick for their talented cornerback L’Jarius Sneed. The league was not interested in the cornerback trade market this season. This was primarily due to a deep cornerback draft class.

The Browns were never going to trade Newsome on a discount. The team knows he’s an extremely valuable cornerback and they need him. Newsome is a talented cornerback who has top-notch production. Finding a replacement at Newsome’s level would not be easy for the team. His stats aren’t as impressive as Denzel Ward and M.J. Emerson but he can hold his own against most receivers. To avoid Ward and Emerson teams will always target the slot position on the defense. However, most cornerbacks cannot hold their own as Newsome can. After all, the Browns had the best defense in NFL history last season.

The Browns will eventually have to pay the bill for Newsome and Emerson, but the team is in no rush to break up the trio of cornerbacks.

CB Greg Newsome II not worried about his future with Browns

Newsome has no desire to play elsewhere.

Despite an offseason of being named in trade rumors, cornerback Greg Newsome II is not worried about his future with the Browns.

Speaking at the Midpark Titans’ girls’ flag football practice where he and linebacker Tony Fields II made an appearance, Newsome had this to say about being constantly named in trade rumblings:

“I feel like I’m comfortable here. I feel like AB and the ownership and all my coaches know what I’m capable of, they know what I bring to this team..being one of those glue guys..I feel like they know my value.” (via Camryn Justice)

The Browns had the best defense in the NFL last year, so looking for an upgrade to that unit may be a bit of a futile task. While Newsome II has room to get better still, there is no rush for him to burn through the last two seasons of his contract in Cleveland.

Newsome II, Denzel Ward, and Martin Emerson Jr. make up a great trio of cornerbacks in a system that runs predominantly nickel sets, so why shake that up now?

Browns might be open to trading one of their top cornerbacks

Cleveland could move on from a talented cornerback this year

NFL free agency is nearly here with legal tampering beginning on Monday, March 11 at noon Eastern. Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry is already hard at work doing what he does best, manipulating the salary cap ahead of free agency. Could he also be looking to trade former first-round pick Greg Newsome II?

Berry will explore all avenues to move money around. Writing for The Washington Post, Jason La Canfora said he has heard the Browns could be shopping one of their corners to balance out some of the big contracts they have.

This makes sense with three talented cornerbacks on the roster, one of which has already been paid. The team can’t sign them all to massive extensions. Denzel Ward seems to be safe after the team restructured his deal this offseason, and Martin Emerson Jr. still has two cheap years on his rookie contract as a former third-round pick.

The move that would make the most sense is trading Greg Newsome II. The team has yet to make a decision on his fifth-year option, which would cost $13.3 million. The deadline for that is May 2.

Newsome struggled the most out of the trio, giving up several big plays in key moments of games.

In the end, the team could keep all of them, but moving on from Newsome to free up cap space and add draft assets makes too much sense.

Browns: Greg Newsome II’s fifth-year option pricetag set with decision looming

The price tag is now set for Newsome’s fifth year option

The Cleveland Browns have a big decision on former first round cornerback Greg Newsome II and his fifth-year option by May.

With the new NFL league year set to start with free agency in a few weeks, the price tag for first-round picks from the 2021 draft has been set. Browns’ 2021 first-round pick’s price tag for that fifth year is $13.377 million to hit the books in 2025.

The team has a tough decision to be made with Newsome who at times has shown he is worth more than that but at times hasn’t been worth the price tag. Moving him back and forth between the slot and working outside may be part of the issue as he hasn’t been able to focus solely on one or the other.

You could see the team focus on one or the other this season. Honestly, Newsome might be better suited at playing inside especially as both Martin Emerson Jr. and Denzel Ward have shown they are much better than Newsome on the outside.

In the end, there are not enough good corners in the NFL and whether they sign him long-term or look to move him the Browns will likely pick up the option.
