Houston Texans center-guard Greg Mancz just can’t get any respect.

According to Doug Farrar from the Touchdown Wire, Mancz wasn’t good enough to make the all-practice squad team. Even former Texans tackle David Quessenberry made the squad, but not Mancz.

The former 2015 undrafted free agent from Toledo has been a solid contributor for the Texans, starting in 28 of his 54 games active. In 2016, Mancz played all 16 games at center until Nick Martin took the job the following year. Since then, the 6-4, 302-pound interior offensive lineman has been active for 35 games and started in 12 of them.

Though Mancz may be overlooked when looking at all 32 teams’ practice squads, offensive coordinator Tim Kelly is pleased to keep Mancz in the organization.

“Being able to get Greg back is really good,” Kelly said. “I look forward to continue to work with Greg. I enjoy working with him and I’m excited that he’s back here with us.”

If Martin and starting guards Zach Fulton and Max Scharping are missing any time, the Texans can count on Mancz to fill the void and keep the continuity of the line together.

Texans excited to keep C-G Greg Mancz around

The Houston Texans found a way to keep Greg Mancz with the team while not having him count on the active roster.

The Houston Texans released center-guard Greg Mancz during their roster cuts to finalize their 53-man roster Saturday.

Though the club wouldn’t have their reliable interior offensive lineman on the active roster, the new practice squad rules allowed the Texans to stash Mancz.

“Being able to get Greg back is really good,” offensive coordinator Tim Kelly said. “I look forward to continue to work with Greg. I enjoy working with him and I’m excited that he’s back here with us.”

What the club appreciates about the former 2015 undrafted free agent from Toledo is his ability to play all three of the interior offensive line positions. In 2016, Mancz was the club’s starting center for all 16 games until 2016 second-rounder Nick Martin took the job the following year. Since then, Mancz has been active for 35 games with the Texans and started in 12 of them.

Mancz fits in with a body of depth that includes Senio Kelemete and starters Zach Fulton and Max Scharping.

“I’m sure you guys have heard it, but really one of the phrases, especially in that room is ‘the more you can do,'” Kelly said. “The more versatility you provide, the more value you have. Having guys that can play center, guard, tackle really allows you flexibility on the gameday roster. Again, having vets, having guys that have played that are able to step in there in a moment’s notice is something that we’re excited to have here as far as our depth in the offensive line room.”

The Texans are also enthused to keep Mancz in the building. If the Texans need the 6-4, 302-pound guard’s presence to fill in along the interior, they don’t have to go very far.

Report: Texans release C-G Greg Mancz

The Houston Texans have decided to release center-guard Greg Mancz as they trim their roster to 53 men.

The Houston Texans have valued experience in their 2020 roster construction, but they appear to be going in another direction for their interior offensive line.

According to Mike Garafolo, the Texans have decided to release center-guard Greg Mancz in a surprising move on Saturday. Mancz signed a two-year contract extension with the Texans in 2018 that kept him under contract through the 2020 season. Mancz also started 16 games for the Texans at center, and, after Nick Martin took over the starting center job, he found utility as depth along the interior offensive line. In 2019, Mancz was active for nine games and started in one of them.

The Texans have the same versatility that Mancz provided along the interior offensive line with Senio Kelemete and starting guards Zach Fulton and Max Scharping, who took snaps at center during training camp.

Texans have offensive line continuity even down into their depth

The Houston Texans have continuity among their five starting offensive linemen, but they also have it down into their depth.

The Houston Texans can count the continuity along their offensive line. After all, they will have all five starters returning for the first time since 2011. That is a winning formula in pro football.

In addition to the cohesion that has formed with their starters, the Texans also have dependable depth along the offensive line.

Offensive line coach Mike Devlin is “appreciative” of the veteran talent they have on the bench in Greg Mancz, Senio Kelemete, and Roderick Johnson.

“In this day and age with what we’re all going through, you have to be prepared for any scenario,” Devlin said. “I really feel like having those veteran backups like we got is critical for the season, and they’ve all played for us.”

Kelemete was the Texans’ starting left guard in 14 of his 15 games in 2018 before rookie Max Scharping took his spot. Mancz has played 54 games for the Texans, starting in 28 of them in just about every position along the interior offensive line. Johnson was activated for all 16 games last year and started in three of them as rookie right tackle Tytus Howard was lost for the year on Nov. 30 to an MCL injury.

Even though the Texans have “dependable, tough, and smart” players along the offensive line, Devlin doesn’t believe he knows what he has until full contact is allowed in practice.

“Every year is a different year and you have to go out and grind it and improve yourself,” said Devlin. “Last year was a starting point of all those guys together and it makes it tougher because you want to hit. O-linemen, you want to hit, you want to get your fix.

“So, that’s still a little bit of a ways away. As I tell you guys all the time, I’ll know more about a lot of guys once the contact comes.”

If availability issues hit the offensive line, the Texans know they can count on quality depth to fill key positions.

Report: Texans offensive lineman Greg Mancz has ankle surgery

Houston Texans offensive lineman Greg Mancz had ankle surgery, according to the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson.

Houston Texans offensive lineman Greg Mancz underwent a procedure to help his ankle and get ready for his final season under contract.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the 27-year-old had arthroscopic ankle surgery and is expected to make a full recovery in time for the Texans’ offseason workout program, which gets kicked off in April.

Mancz played nine games for the Texans, starting in one of them, Week 4’s 16-10 loss to the Carolina Panthers at NRG Stadium.

The former undrafted Toledo Rocket from 2015 has been a steady and reliable interior offensive lineman for the Texans, filling in at guard and center when needed. In his five seasons with the Texans, Mancz has been active for 54 games, starting in 28 of them, the bulk of which came in 2016 when he started every game at center for Houston.

Mancz is entering the final year of his contract and is due $2.1 million. The Texans could cut Mancz in the offseason and not suffer any dead money.
