Dolphins expected to be without Greg Mancz and Will Fuller vs. Baltimore

Another week without the big free agent acquisition.

After securing their second win of the season, the Miami Dolphins have a quick turnaround for Thursday night when they take on the Baltimore Ravens.

The Ravens have been one of the best teams in the NFL this season, and they currently have the second-best record in the AFC at 6-2. With all of the talent that they possess, opponents will have to be locked in and ready to go.

Unfortunately for Miami, during his Monday media availability, Brian Flores announced that wide receiver Will Fuller will not return from injured reserve this week, and center Greg Mancz will likely be inactive as well.

Mancz left Sunday’s game against Houston early with an ankle injury and was replaced by Austin Reiter. Reiter is an NFL center, so he should be able to hold his own.

This will now be the eighth game this season that Fuller won’t be available for. Miami’s top signing has played just two games this year, bringing in just four receptions for 26 yards. It almost would’ve been as helpful to just set $10 million on fire.

With this week being such a tough matchup, the Dolphins will need all of their top talent available, but it doesn’t seem like that will be the case.

C Greg Mancz and TE Durham Smythe questionable to return vs. Texans

Both could return at some point.

The injury problems continue for the Miami Dolphins who are missing multiple key players for their Week 9 matchup with the Houston Texans.

During the first quarter of Sunday’s game, the Dolphins saw both center Greg Mancz and tight end Durham Smythe leave the field with injuries. Mancz’s injury is an ankle while Smythe is dealing with an eye issue.

In the meantime, Smythe’s role will be taken on by Mike Gesicki and Adam Shaheen who are the top two tight ends on the roster, and Mancz will be replaced by Austin Reiter who started last week.

Both players could return to action at some point during the game, as both of their statuses are questionable.

Dolphins injury report: Tua Tagovailoa limited on Wednesday with a finger

The list of names has dropped to six.

The Miami Dolphins returned to the practice field on Wednesday, as they prepare for their Week 9 matchup with the Houston Texans at Hard Rock Stadium.

This was the first week that’s started off with a full practice in a while, as Brian Flores’ team has been doing walk-throughs for their first practice of the week recently.

Last week, Miami’s injury report consisted of 12 players, which improved to just six on Wednesday.

Four players were limited, including quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (ribs/left finger), wide receiver DeVante Parker (shoulder/hamstring), linebacker Jerome Baker (knee), and safety Brandon Jones (ankle).

Two players participated fully: center Greg Mancz (groin) and linebacker Jaelan Phillips (ankle).

All of these injuries have carried over from last week besides Tagovailoa’s finger. It’s not known when this injury was suffered, but, with Tagovailoa being a left-handed quarterback, this could affect his passes. This will be something to monitor throughout the week.

The Miami Dolphins’ latest investment into the offensive line is yet another one that comes with only marginal risk. The Dolphins have made several low-risk shots at improving the depth and flexibility of one of their most troublesome units — and the opportunity the team has taken to bring former Baltimore Raven and Houston Texan Greg Mancz into the fray is no different. The news broke yesterday that Mancz would be coming to Miami as part of a “late round pick swap”; and the details of the deal emerged in the hours of aftermath that we saw unfold.

According to Jeff Zrebiec of ‘The Athletic’, the Dolphins are sending a 6th-round draft choice to Baltimore for Mancz and a 7th-round draft selection in return.

The arrangement, as reported by Zrebiec, allows Miami continued flexibility to keep ammunition for late in the draft but provides the necessary value to tack another contender into the mix along the line. The true value between the picks involved won’t be determined until the season unfolds; but regardless of the discrepancy, this is a minor trade and next to zero risk.

The Dolphins will have a few days to try to tack some added draft value back onto their ledger, too — the team has a surplus of talent at both wide receiver and cornerback; perhaps a trade of either one of those positions could bring the Dolphins back a late round pick earlier in the draft queue to keep them in a relatively similar position to the pick range they just surrendered to bring in Mancz.

Ravens reportedly trade OL Greg Mancz to Dolphins in deal that involves pick swap

The Ravens reportedly traded OL Greg Mancz to the Dolphins in a deal that involves a late-round pick swap

The Baltimore Ravens will be saying farewell to quite a few players in a short amount of time as cut down day quickly approaches. However, the team has made a few trades over the last couple of days that have netted them draft compensation for people who would not have made their final roster.

On Saturday, Baltimore reportedly traded offensive lineman Greg Mancz to the Miami Dolphins in a deal that includes a late-round pick swap. The move comes on the heels of another trade made by the team a few days ago, as they traded rookie cornerback Shaun Wade to the New England Patriots in exchange for two draft selections.

In the past three days, the Ravens have acquired a 2022 sixth-round pick and a 2023 fifth-round selection for two players who likely would have been cut during final roster trim downs. It’s great value for general manager Eric DeCosta, as acquiring anything of value for a player who isn’t going to make the team is a win.

Mancz spent the first six years of his NFL career with the Houston Texans before signing a reserve/futures deal with Baltimore in January. He was competing for one of the final offensive line spots on the Ravens’ roster, but the versatile lineman couldn’t carve out a role to himself. Instead he’ll head to Miami, where he’ll seemingly play alongside another former Baltimore player in offensive lineman Matt Skura.

Report: Dolphins trade for OL Greg Mancz from Baltimore Ravens

The Miami Dolphins’ continued tweaking of the offensive line is coming down the midnight hour. With the 53-man roster cuts coming in the next few days, Miami has pulled several offensive linemen into the fray throughout the course of the offseason with mixed results. Names like Jermaine Eluemunor and Isaiah Wilson and DJ Fluker have already come and gone. Liam Eichenberg is continuing to push for an offensive tackle starting role. The team traded for offensive tackle Greg Little within the last two weeks and now the team is back into the mix with another reported trade.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport has reported that the Dolphins have agreed to terms with the Baltimore Ravens for an additional offensive lineman — acquiring Greg Mancz in a swap of late-round picks.

Mancz, a seven-year NFL veteran, got his start in the NFL with the Houston Texans and served as the team’s starting center. As the years have passed, he’s become more of a utility player; bumping around between the guard positions, center and serving occasionally as an extra tight end. His addition is bad news for UDFA Robert Jones and potentially even backup center Matt Skura, who to date has not gotten much run elsewhere on the offensive line and appears to not have the same level of positional flexibility as Mancz.

Versatility is the name of the game for the Dolphins’ offensive line, so getting a center/guard flexible utility lineman to play behind Michael Deiter on the interior was presumably a strong motivating factor for the Dolphins.

Ravens sign C Greg Mancz to a Reserve/Futures contract

The Baltimore Ravens add depth to their offensive line after they signed Center Greg Mancz to a Reserve/Future contract.

The Baltimore Ravens were busy on Friday. After the team announced they re-signed tight end Nick Boyle to a two-year contract extension, they did not wait long to add protection for Lamar Jackson also. According to the Ravens’ Twitter account, the team signed center Greg Mancz to a Reserve/Futures contract. Mancz is the 13th player Baltimore has signed to a futures contract this offseason.

This isn’t Mancz’s first time with Baltimore as the team signed him to the practice squad a few weeks ago. By locking Mancz to a futures contract, the Ravens are keeping him in town a little longer, which could mean he’ll get a chance to compete for the starting center job in training camp. Considering center is one of Baltimore’s top offseason priorities, having extra help on the depth chart is never a bad thing.

The Ravens struggled all season long at center. Matt Skura was initially the starter before frequent errant snaps saw him head to the bench in favor of Patrick Mekari. Unfortunately, Mekari had a case of the bad snaps at the worst possible time, firing a few balls off the mark in the divisional game against the Buffalo Bills.

Mancz had signed with the Houston Texans after going undrafted in 2015 and has found playing time all across the offensive line throughout his six-year career. While a futures contract typically means the player is pretty inexperienced, that’s not the case for Mancz, who has played in 58 games, starting 28 of them.
