ESPN predicts early bowl appearance for Auburn

ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach expect the Tigers to face a group of five team during bowl season.

Auburn is off to a strong 3-0 start ahead of conference play, and college football experts across the country are beginning to set realistic bowl expectations for the Tigers.

ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach have been cautious in predicting where Auburn will finish the 2023 season, but both are on the same page as the college football calendar turns to week four. Both Bonagura and Schlabach are forecasting the Tigers to play in the Gasparilla Bowl before Christmas, but both writers are not on the same page as far as which opponent the Tigers will face.

Schlabach projects Auburn to face Army West Point at Raymond James Stadium on Dec. 22. The Tigers and Black Knights have played three times in history, with Auburn taking the most recent battle in the 1996 Independence Bowl, 32-29.

As for Bonagura, he foresees Auburn facing Coastal Carolina in the bowl game. This matchup is intriguing because the Tigers would face [autotag]Grayson McCall[/autotag], the Coastal Carolina quarterback who had an interest in transferring to Auburn last offseason before withdrawing his name from the transfer portal.

If Auburn were to compete in the Gasparilla Bowl this season, the game will kick off at 5:30 p.m. CT at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.

2024 NFL Draft prospect Grayson McCall talks what he brings to the table, 2023 season for Coastal Carolina

Crissy Froyd sat down with Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall ahead of the 2023 season.

Grayson McCall has been known as one of college football’s most electrifying players within Coastal Carolina’s RPO-hybrid offense since he first took the field.

But the Chanticleers signal-caller is looking forward to expanding upon his game under new head coach Tim Beck with a different offense, showing some additional things in his toolbox that he feels people haven’t quite seen yet while being surrounded by a roster he says includes 50 new faces.

That comes down to the relationship he has with Beck and some of the differences in the way the Chants plan to do things offensively this season. McCall has also spent some time talking to current Kentucky quarterback Devin Leary, who he says has been helpful in the adjustment process after playing under Beck at NC State.

“Coach Beck has developed a lot of really good college quarterbacks into professional quarterbacks,” McCall said. “He’s going to allow me to put some new things on tape this year and throw it around a lot more and get on the center and do some pro style stuff that I haven’t really put on tape yet.”

McCall says he sees some differences between the way things are run, but a lot of it is familiar to him at the exact same time. What he’s called upon to do pre-snap is one of those things.

Obviously, McCall has to identify the front for the offensive line and for himself, along with identifying the defensive structure and the coverage.

But there’s more responsibility being leaned on him at the line of scrimmage after what he showed the coaches in the spring, McCall says.

It’s something that bodes well for him in the future.

“Just being able to get under center and make those checks and get in the profile system and just show the next level coaches that I can command a huddle and lead guys and make the guys around me better,” McCall said.

While McCall has received plenty of support and hype throughout the year, one of the biggest narratives he’s up against outside of that of the “level of competition” narrative is the idea that he doesn’t have adequate arm strength for the NFL level on top of question on how he’s going to fare through the season coming back from torn rotator cuff repair in his throwing shoulder.

It’s worth noting that several record-setting quarterbacks and even just those who have had solid college and professional careers did not have an absolute Howitzer for an arm.

While McCall isn’t going to blow anyone away with his arm strength the way  an Anthony Richardson or a Will Levis might, the film still reflects that he has adequate zip on the ball.

“A lot of people doubted my arm strength and thought that I lost some of that arm strength,” McCall said.

Adding some weight and with a productive offseason, McCall feels like he’s gotten stronger and that if anything, he’ll be even more impressive as a passer than he was in 2022.

“I feel like the ball’s coming out of my hands faster with more authority and I feel confident that I can make all the throws on the field,” McCall said. “So you can go back and forth about the arm strength thing all day. It’s a great thing to have a strong arm, but I don’t think it’s completely necessary to be able to succeed at the quarterback position.”

McCall and the Chanticleers opened up the 2023 season on Saturday evening with a matchup against a tough UCLA Bruins team that most analysts had ranked in the top third of the FBS.

While McCall put on a gritty performance and helped to keep his team in the game despite not coming out on the right side of the win column as the Bruins won it, 27-13. McCall finished out the contest 27-of-42 passing for 271 yards with a rare two interceptions.

While this may not look like the most impressive stat line at first glance, McCall’s ability to stand in and take several rough hits really shone through as he was covered in grass.

Beck had nothing but praise for his quarterback following the contest.

“I love that kid,” Beck said. “I know right now, he’s probably beating himself up because he probably thinks he could have done better, and I’m just proud of the way he played. I’m proud of the way he stood in there.”

Look for McCall to bounce back and continue increasing his draft stock as Coastal Carolina faces Jax State on Saturday at 7 p.m. CT.

Auburn among top schools in sweepstakes for Brennan Armstrong

Auburn is one of three schools that is in the hunt to land the former Virginia quarterback.

Auburn has been a hot name in the transfer portal market since its opening on Dec. 5, especially at the quarterback position.

The first quarterback portal battle for Auburn was between NC State’s [autotag]Devin Leary[/autotag] and Coastal Carolina’s [autotag]Grayson McCall[/autotag]. However, Leary elected to sign with SEC foe Kentucky, and McCall recently decided to remove his name from the transfer portal.

Now that the fate of those two quarterbacks has been sealed, Auburn appears to have two more names within its sights.

Reports surfaced on Dec. 23 that Auburn and head coach Hugh Freeze had been in contact with Oklahoma State quarterback Spencer Sanders about possibly earning his signature. There appears to be another name in the race, Virginia’s [autotag]Brennan Armstrong[/autotag].

ESPN’s Pete Thamel shared Monday during a segment on College Gameday that the Virginia field general has been contacted by Auburn, as well as NC State and Oklahoma State.

Thamel is led to believe that Armstrong is leaning towards staying in the ACC, and will be reunited with his former offensive coordinator.

“Brennan Armstrong had a down year with the departure of Robert Anae, his offensive coordinator (from Virginia),” Thamel said. “I was told (Monday), ‘Don’t be surprised if Armstrong reunites with him at NC State.’ Auburn and Oklahoma State are also in the mix there.”

Armstrong had his strongest season in 2021 under the direction of Anae. Despite Virginia finishing with a 6-6 record, Armstrong completed 326-of-500 passes for 4,449 yards and 31 touchdowns.

[autotag]Robby Ashford[/autotag], [autotag]Holden Geriner[/autotag], and [autotag]T.J. Finley[/autotag] return to the quarterback room from last season’s roster. Auburn also added three-star [autotag]Hank Brown[/autotag] to its’ 2023 signing class. However, Freeze is looking for experience at the position in his first season at Auburn. Quarterbacks such as Sanders and Armstrong fit the mold of what Freeze is looking for.

“Yes, we are (going to seek a transfer QB),” Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze said during his early signing period press conference on Dec. 21. “If it’s the right one, that we believe we can win games with.”

Sanders and Armstrong are among the top quarterbacks that remain in the transfer portal, joining Arkansas‘ Malik Hornsby.

Auburn transfer QB target withdraws from portal

Grayson McCall was set to visit Auburn before canceling the visit.

Auburn won’t be getting the services of Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall, but it seems as if no other team will, either.

McCall was the No. 2 transfer quarterback in 247Sports’ portal rankings, but according to 247Sports’ Chris Hummer, he won’t be entering the portal at all. It seems as if McCall will stay at Coastal Carolina for another year, ending the sweepstakes for what would have been one of the most anticipated prospects in the portal.

Hugh Freeze and the Tigers were set to host McCall in an effort to woo him to the Plains, but McCall canceled his visit at the last moment and did not reschedule due to an “academic issue”. This appears to be the only visit he had set up, and it appears he’s now withdrawn his name from the portal and is expected to continue to play for Coastal Carolina this coming season.

Auburn has not brought a transfer quarterback in as of yet, and it’s looking unlikely that the team will do so as the marquee prospects come off the board.

Five remaining options for Notre Dame in their quest for a transfer quarterback

There are still plenty of solid options remaining in the portal for the Irish

The Irish haven’t had the best luck in finding a quarterback in the transfer portal. Yesterday, another big name was taken off the board when Texas’ [autotag]Hudson Card[/autotag] decided to head up North to the correct state, but not the right team, as he selected to continue his career at Purdue.

The list of intriguing options continues to dwindle, as [autotag]DJ Uiagalelei[/autotag] opted for [autotag]Oregon State[/autotag], [autotag]Devin Leary[/autotag] choose [autotag]Kentucky[/autotag], [autotag]Collin Schlee[/autotag] made a big jump from [autotag]Kent State[/autotag] to UCLA and [autotag]Graham Mertz[/autotag] picked Florida.

The Irish were connected to Card and Leary, but obviously both choose elsewhere to strap their helmets up next. Here are a few options for [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and offensive coordinator [autotag]Tommy Rees[/autotag] that are still out in the portal that make sense for [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag].

Hugh Freeze, Spencer Sanders reportedly in contact

After NC State QB Devin Leary signed with Kentucky, Hugh Freeze is seeking another quarterback option from the transfer portal.

Auburn enters the offseason with a lack of depth at the quarterback position.

[autotag]Robby Ashford[/autotag] and [autotag]Holden Geriner[/autotag] remain from last season’s roster following the departures of [autotag]Zach Calzada[/autotag] and [autotag]Trey Lindsey[/autotag] to the transfer portal. Mix that in with the mysterious future of [autotag]T.J. Finley[/autotag], and the freshness of 2023 signee [autotag]Hank Brown[/autotag], and Auburn will need to add a quarterback with some sort of experience.

“Yes, we are (going to seek a transfer QB),” Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze said during his early signing period press conference on Wednesday. “If it’s the right one, that we believe we can win games with.”

The next biggest name tied to Auburn is former Oklahoma State quarterback [autotag]Spencer Sanders[/autotag] according to Nathan King of Auburn Undercover.

Sanders, who entered the transfer portal in early December, would be a solid fit in Freeze’s system due to his success as a passer. In four seasons at Oklahoma State, Sanders passed for 9,553 yards and 67 TD. He is also a threat with his feet, as he has added 1,956 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns to his career total.

Sanders is the next name to watch following former NC State quarterback [autotag]Devin Leary[/autotag]’s signing with Kentucky. Leary visited Auburn prior to the start of the early signing period but elected to sign with the Wildcats. Coastal Carolina’s [autotag]Grayson McCall[/autotag] has also been a hot name to follow, however, he canceled a trip to Auburn due to an “academic snag” according to Jeffrey Lee of Auburn Live.

Auburn has inked two additions from the transfer portal since Dec. 5, former Vanderbilt EDGE rusher [autotag]Elijah McAllister[/autotag] and former FIU tight end [autotag]Rivaldo Fairweather[/autotag].

Florida a ‘serious contender’ for this top transfer portal QB

The Gators are considered “serious contenders” for Grayson McCall, one of the top transfer QBs available in the portal.

The Florida Gators are in the mix for former Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall, with On3’s Pete Nakos reporting Monday that the Orange and Blue are “serious contenders” for the transfer quarterback.

According to On3’s transfer portal rankings, McCall is the No. 4 quarterback in the portal and the No. 19 overall. He is behind recent Kentucky commit and former NC State quarterback Devin Leary (No. 1), former Virginia quarterback Brendan Armstrong (No. 2), and former Oklahoma State quarterback Spencer Sanders (No. 3).

Florida is in desperate need of reinforcements in its quarterback room. With [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag] declaring for the NFL draft and [autotag]Jalen Kitna[/autotag]’s dismissal from the football program, Florida is left with just two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster: [autotag]Jack Miller III[/autotag], who started the Las Vegas Bowl game (and was underwhelming in his Orange and Blue debut) and freshman [autotag]Max Brown[/autotag], a former three-star prospect from Tulsa, Oklahoma. [autotag]Jaden Rashada[/autotag], a top prospect in the 2023 class and Florida commit, would be the third scholarship quarterback on the roster.

McCall would be a good fit for [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] and his offensive system. Having started 34 games across four seasons at Coastal Carolina, McCall is one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the nation amassing over 9,000 scrimmage yards and tallying 94 touchdowns.

A three-time Sun Belt player of the year, Napier is familiar with McCall from his time at Louisiana. Bringing in a top transfer quarterback to compete with Miller and, potentially, Rashada after he enrolls for the spring semester would be a big boost for the program.

Early signing day is Wednesday, Dec. 21. The Florida Gators currently have the No. 9 class in 2023, with 17 of their 21 commitments coming from four-star prospects, according to On3.

Transfer Portal: Two quarterback targets appear to be trending elsewhere

Auburn is competing with two fellow SEC programs for the services of top transfer quarterbacks.

Auburn has found luck in high school recruiting over the last week, as Hugh Freeze has flipped five players to Auburn from previous commitments. Last week, it appeared that Freeze and company were about to make noise in the transfer portal as well.

However, the trend for the nation’s top quarterback options appears to be shifting away from Auburn.

Auburn was in heavy pursuit of NC State quarterback [autotag]Devin Leary[/autotag] and Coastal Carolina quarterback [autotag]Grayson McCall[/autotag] last weekend, and the interest appeared to be mutual. Both quarterbacks were slated to visit campus last weekend, however, an unknown snag caused McCall to change his mind.

Following the cancellation, it appears that a fellow SEC program is now the top contender. Pete Nakos of On3 reported Monday that Florida has become the front-runner to land McCall.

Florida is in need of an experienced quarterback following Anthony Richardson’s announced intention to leave the program in favor of the NFL. It is also believed that Florida does not want to rush four-star commit Jaden Rashda’s development. McCall’s lone season would provide enough cushion to allow Rashada plenty of time to adjust to the SEC.

Leary, however, did visit Auburn last weekend. He declined an interview according to Auburn Undercover (subscription required), but their sources believe that the visit went well.

Following the visit, it appears that Auburn’s competition is Kentucky. Kentucky Sports Radio’s Adam Luckett submitted a prediction on Monday that Leary will end up signing with Kentucky, which now gives the Wildcats a 96% chance to land the talented slinger.

Leary’s visit to Auburn was seen as a surprise to those close to the Kentucky program, but Wildcat players appear to remain confident that Leary will sign with them.

Auburn earned the commitment of FIU tight end Rivaldo Fairweather on Sunday, and also welcomed a pair of Mississippi State transfer candidates in RaRa Thomas and Dillon Johnson this weekend. The current transfer portal window is set to close on January 19, so expect Auburn to continue pursuing the top candidates to fill needs.

Transfer QB Grayson McCall will no longer visit Auburn

He is one of the top overall players and arguably the top quarterback in the transfer portal.

Transfer quarterback [autotag]Grayson McCall[/autotag] was  planning to visit Auburn this weekend, but that will not happen according to a report by Christian Clemente of Auburn Undercover.

McCall is one of the top players in the transfer portal and arguably the top quarterback after spending the past four seasons at Coastal Carolina.

A three-year starter, he threw for 2,633 yards and 24 touchdowns to just two interceptions in 2022. He has completed 70% of his passes for 8,019 yards and 78 touchdowns to just eight interceptions in 34 career games.

The good news for Auburn is NC State transfer quarterback [autotag]Devin Leary[/autotag] is officially visiting Auburn this weekend. He is also one of the top players in the portal and joins McCall as the top quarterbacks on the transfer market.

With McCall canceling his visit, Leary appears to be Auburn’s top quarterback target. Leary was a star in 2021 for the Wolfpack but was limited to just six games in 2022 because of a shoulder injury.

Completing 66% of his passes, he threw for 3,433 yards and 35 touchdowns to eight interceptions in 2021. In 30 career games, he has completed 60.2% of his passes for 6,807 yards, 62 touchdowns to 16 interceptions. He will have one more season of eligibility at his next school.

Who’s next at QB for Florida? Here are some transfer portal options

Here are some of the top names to keep an eye on in the transfer portal as the Gators look for their next signal-caller.

Florida football faces some serious attrition at the quarterback position after the departure of starter [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag] to the NFL draft and the dismissal of [autotag]Jalen Kitna[/autotag] from the program due to criminal charges. Add the revocation of 2023 recruit [autotag]Marcus Stokes[/autotag]’ scholarship due to unacceptable behavior, and [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] has quite a pickle to deal with this offseason.

The good news is the program has done very well bolstering its depth under center for the long term, earning commitments from 2023 five-star signal-caller [autotag]Jaden Rashada[/autotag] as well as 2024’s [autotag]DJ Lagway[/autotag].

Unfortunately, there is only [autotag]Jack Miller III[/autotag] and a few other untested young gunslingers to help bridge the quarterback room in the interim, which means the Gators will need to dip into the NCAA transfer portal for at least one potential starter in 2023.

Take a look below at the list of potential transfer portal targets Gators Online’s Nick de la Torre put together in the second edition of his hot board, along with some relevant rankings and stats to go along with them.
