Could the Celtics be resetting their locker room leadership?

The Boston Celtics have lost two big locker room voices in Marcus Smart and Grant Williams, who have both left the team via trade in recent weeks.

On this past July 5, the Boston Celtics agreed to a three-team sign-and-trade that sent restricted free agent forward Grant Williams to the Dallas Mavericks. In return, Boston will receive multiple second round draft picks.

“This feels very much like the Celtics a few years ago when they actually initially drafted Grant Williams, when it was the Marcus Morris season, where all of a sudden the Celtics felt like the luck and room chemistry wasn’t quite what they wanted it to be. And that year, they drafted for personality and chemistry, and in came Grant Williams,” Taylor said.

The Celtics have been busy since the offseason began, acquiring Kristaps Porzingis in a deal that saw Marcus Smart head to the Memphis Grizzlies and acquiring Oshae Brissett and Dalano Banton via free agency.

Brad Stevens was also active on draft night, making a string of trades to move back in the draft before selecting Jordan Walsh out of Arkansas. After losing two core contributors from the rotation this summer, it will be interesting to see how the Celtics maneuver throughout the remainder of the offseason.

Reacting to the Boston Celtics trading Grant Williams to the Dallas Mavericks

Boston fans are understandably disappointed with the trade as they see it as losing a valuable rotation player for nothing, or very close to it.

The Boston Celtics have traded Grant Williams to the Dallas Mavericks in a three-team trade also involving the San Antonio Spurs. The Celtics received three second round picks, while the Spurs received a pick swap and Reggie Bullock as part of the deal for making their cap space available to grease the wheels of the trade.

Williams signed a four-year, $54 million contract with the Mavericks, evidently more than whatever the so-called “green light” Celtics President of Basketball Operations had been approved to spend. Boston fans are understandably disappointed with the trade as they see it as losing a valuable rotation player for nothing, or very close to it.

The hosts of the “How ‘Bout Them Celtics?” podcast Jack Simone and Sam LaFrance broke down the deal from their points of view while trying to project what it means for Boston’s future in a recent reaction pod.

Boston Celtics trade Grant Williams to the Mavs in three-team deal with the Spurs

Boston fans seem irked in the early reaction given the relatively minor return for such a talented player.

The Boston Celtics have made another significant move currently making waves in the NBA trade market by dealing away restricted free agent forward Grant Williams to the Dallas Mavericks. This swap involves signing and trading Williams, a player previously held in high regard by the Celtics and their fans, to the Dallas Mavericks’ roster for three second round draft picks and a traded player exception.

The Mavs are giving the San Antonio Spurs an unrestricted 2030 pick swap for taking on the salary of veteran shooting guard Reggie Bullock to make space for the Charlotte native on Dallas’ books, and Boston fans seem irked in the early reaction given the relatively minor return for such a talented player.

Batman to Dallas: Celtics sending Grant Williams to the Mavericks in three-team trade

Grant Williams is reportedly headed to Dallas following a three-team deal between the Celtics, Mavs, and Spurs

The Boston Celtics are reportedly sending forward Grant Williams to the Dallas Mavericks in a three-team deal that also includes the San Antonio Spurs. Williams is set to ink a new four-year, $53 million contract with Dallas in a sign-and-trade deal after spending his first four seasons in the NBA with Boston according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Boston will receive multiple second-round picks as part of the trade, while Reggie Bullock and an unprotected 2030 pick swap are headed to San Antonio. Wojnarowski reported the Celtics and the Mavs will each land two second-round picks in the trade.

This comes after a flurry of moves on draft night netted Boston four future second-round picks.

Report: Mavs interest in Celtics restricted free agent Grant Williams remains high

“Williams’ camp wants a larger contract than the full midlevel exception,” adds Cato, which would be another issue complicating any sign-and-trade deal.

The Dallas Maverick’s interest in signing restricted Boston Celtics free agent Grant Williams remains high according to The Athletic’s Tim Cato. However, the Celtics’ “threatening to match a full midlevel exception offer sheet puts Dallas in a situation where the team must either call Boston’s bluff or work with them to provide something to ensure Williams comes to Dallas.”

Boston is reportedly looking for a first-round draft pick to let Williams go without matching a deal, likely too steep of an ask for most teams. Few seem willing — at least with other potential trades gumming up the market — to call Boston’s bluff and tie up some of their cap sheet in ways that could cause them to miss on other, perhaps easier-to-get options.

“Williams’ camp wants a larger contract than the full midlevel exception,” adds Cato, which would be another issue complicating any sign-and-trade deal.

At present, the Charlotte Hornets, who have expressed interest in a Williams signing, and the San Antonio Spurs (who have not) loom as potential threats to sign the Charlotte native.

Celtics reportedly want a first-round pick for Grant Williams sign-and-trade

The “Atlanta (Hawks), Charlotte (Hornets), Dallas (Mavericks), New York (Knicks) and Washington (Wizards) are all still in the mix,” writes Weiss.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8169″]

The Boston Celtics are looking for a significant return for restricted free agent Grant Williams if the former Tennessee standout and Boston part ways in free agency.

“Though most of the league’s cap space has dried up at this point, the expectation with Williams has always been that a sign-and-trade or midlevel exception (MLE) would be the likely outcome,” The Athletic NBA insider Jared Weiss reports.

The “Atlanta (Hawks), Charlotte (Hornets), Dallas (Mavericks), New York (Knicks) and Washington (Wizards) are still in the mix,” wrote Weiss, noting Williams will have to wait until July 6 to sign an offer sheet anywhere.

“Boston has been seeking a first-round pick in return for Williams,” Weiss noted. “(Once) Williams’ situation is resolved, the Celtics will have a clearer picture of how they can build for the future around Brown’s extension.”

Report: Boston’s fragile deal with Jaylen Brown may await Malcolm Brogdon, Grant Williams resolutions

The delay on Jaylen Brown’s supermax may be tied to other loose ends Boston has pending, per ESPN’s Brian Windhorst.

The Boston Celtics still have business left to conduct, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst on a recent episode of “SportsCenter.”

Windhorst reported 2023 Sixth Man of the Year Malcolm Brogdon “may still end up being on the market” but the potential supermax extension for star forward Jaylen Brown needs to be resolved

Describing it as a fragile deal given the potential for negotiations over whether Brown will get the full 35% of the cap in the extension, Windhorst suggests “there’s interest on both sides to get something done,” but such a move would prevent the Georgia native from being traded for a year.

“The Celtics probably want to make sure all their business is locked down before going into this (supermax extension),” he added, suggesting the Brogdon and (Grant) Williams situations may need to be resolved before Brown’s will be, as will the specific terms of a potential deal itself.

“It’s not as simple to say, ‘Jaylen — here’s your contract, sign it or not,” Windhorst explained. “There are aspects within the deal to negotiate; until it’s done, it’s not done.”
