Brian Kelly offers update, support for injured Grambling player Jaquavis Richmond

Jaquavis Richmond was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center for surgery on Saturday night after a scary situation on the field.

LSU’s 72-10 win on Saturday night over Grambling in Tiger Stadium was overshadowed by something far more serious.

Sophomore Grambling linebacker Jaquavis Richmond was injured while trying to make a tackle on a punt return after seemingly colliding with his own teammate. He spent quite a bit of time down on the field before he was ultimately carted off.

After the game, LSU coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] confirmed that Richmond was heading for surgery at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge. The specifics of the injury aren’t clear, but Kelly offered his support to Richmond, his family and the Grambling team.

“So we’re hoping for the very best, and our thoughts and prayers are out to he and his family and certainly the Grambling State family,” Kelly said. “I wanted to make sure we talked about that and paid its proper respects. The game is pale in comparison to that.”

We will hope for more positive updates regarding Richmond’s situation on Sunday.

Brian Kelly updates Mason Taylor’s status after exiting Grambling game with injury

Mason Taylor suffered an ankle sprain in the win over Grambling, according to coach Brian Kelly.

While LSU had no issues on the field in its 72-10 win over Grambling on Saturday night, the biggest concern came in the injury department.

Tight end [autotag]Mason Taylor[/autotag] exited the game after making a catch in the first half, and he would exit the field and go into the tunnel. He later emerged by jogging out, but he wouldn’t reenter the game for the Tigers.

Following the win, coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] said that Taylor had suffered an ankle sprain. He didn’t offer further updates on the severity or a timetable for Taylor’s return.

Taylor was targeted three times in the game, gaining no yards on his only catch.

Taylor plays a major role in LSU’s offense, and the Tigers will need him on the field when they hit the road to take on Mississippi State in their SEC opener next weekend.

Reactions as LSU easily takes down Grambling in home opener

LSU had no problems as it got the win over Grambling on Saturday night in blowout fashion.

LSU got back on track Saturday night after a season-opening loss to Florida State in Week 1. In the Tigers’ home opener, they won 72-10 while matching the program’s third-best mark for points scored in a game.

It was a big game for [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag], who only played in the first half but still threw for 269 yards and a career-high five touchdowns. We saw the ground game emerge in [autotag]Logan Diggs[/autotag]’ LSU debut, and there were promising signs on defense as [autotag]Harold Perkins[/autotag] moved back to his pass-rushing role.

The quality of the opponent should be taken into account, but the Tigers have a lot to build on heading into their SEC opener on the road against Mississippi State next weekend.

Here were the reactions from Saturday night’s blowout win.

Five takeaways from LSU’s blowout win over Grambling

Here are five takeaways from LSU’s blowout win over Grambling.

LSU and Grambling met for the first time in the history of the two programs on Saturday night.

For LSU, it was its second all-time meeting with an HBCU after facing Southern in 2022.

Aside from a few issues on defense, the night went as expected for LSU. The offense was nearly perfect and the Tigers ran away with it.

[autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] finished with 269 passing yards and five touchdowns while Malik Nabers led the team in receiving yards with 87. Brian Thomas Jr added two touchdowns in a blowout 72-10 win.

LSU now turns its attention to Mississippi State as the Tigers kickoff conference play on the road in Starkville next week. For now, here are the takeaways from Saturday night’s win.

Stock Up, Stock Down: LSU boatraces Grambling in home opener

LSU bounced back nicely against Grambling after losing to Florida State in Week 1.

LSU bounced back nicely against Grambling after losing to Florida State in Week 1. [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] was the man we thought he was.

He threw for five touchdowns and 269 yards as he finished the game 18-for-24. We got our first look at Notre Dame transfer [autotag]Logan Diggs[/autotag] at running back. He led all Tiger running backs with 15 carries for 115 yards and a touchdown.

[autotag]Brian Thomas Jr.[/autotag] stepped up big time for the receiving core as he led all LSU receivers in receptions. He caught 6 passes for 78 yards and two touchdowns. With all that good, there is some bad. LSU’s secondary still has questions that need to be answered and Grambling ran all over us.

Here’s how things are trending after the Week 2 win.

Instant Analysis: LSU drops 72 points in dominating home-opening win over Grambling

The Tigers bounced back in a big way with Saturday night’s 72-10 win over Grambling.

LSU got the bounce-back it was looking for at Tiger Stadium on Saturday night as the team breezed to a declarative 72-10 win over Grambling in its Week 2 home opener, tying for the third-most points scored in a game in program history.

The offense led by [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] had a much more efficient and balanced game than it did in the loss to Florida State. Daniels finished with 269 yards and five touchdowns — a career high — through the air, all of which came in the first half.

Daniels also completed 18 of 24 passes.

[autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] took over to start the second half, and while he wasn’t given the opportunity to do a whole lot, he completed 4 of 6 passes for 48 yards, 20 of which came on one play to [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag], and finished a touchdown drive with his legs.

True freshman [autotag]Rickie Collins[/autotag] also saw sporadic action late in the game, though he attempted and completed just a pair of passes for three yards.

Nabers ultimately led the team in receiving with 87 yards and a touchdown on five catches, while it was also another big night for [autotag]Brian Thomas Jr.[/autotag], who led the team in catches with six for 78 yards while catching a pair of touchdown passes.

The Tigers got a much bigger contribution from their ground game on Saturday night as [autotag]Logan Diggs[/autotag] had 115 yards and a touchdown on just 15 carries in his LSU debut after he missed last week’s game. Freshman [autotag]Kaleb Jackson[/autotag] found the end zone twice while also totaling 62 yards on 11 carries.

[autotag]Josh Williams[/autotag] (6 carries, 43 yards) and [autotag]Noah Cain[/autotag] (7 carries, 33 yards, 1 TD) also had solid production on the ground.

Defensively, it was a bit of a sloppy start as the Tigers allowed 259 yards in the first half. They tightened up after that, though, allowing just 61 yards in the second half.

It was another fairly quiet game for [autotag]Harold Perkins[/autotag], who saw more snaps off the edge but managed just one tackle. He did, however, breakup a pass and had a quarterback pressure that caused LSU only interception of the game, which was snagged by [autotag]Greg Penn III[/autotag] on a tip drill.

LSU showed signs of improvement against an inferior opponent, but it will face a tougher test next Saturday when it hits the road to take on Mississippi State in its SEC opener.

LSU vs. Grambling: How to watch Tigers’ home opener on Saturday night in Week 2

The Tigers open their 2023 home slate against Grambling on Saturday night.

After a disappointing loss in Orlando against Florida State to kick off the 2023 season, LSU returns to Baton Rouge to kick off its home slate against Grambling on Saturday night.

This will be the second straight year LSU’s home opener has come against an in-state HBCU, and the Grambling Tigers are led by a former NFL head coach, Hue Jackson.

Saturday night’s contest shouldn’t prove too difficult for the Tigers and should provide the coaching staff with several opportunities to work out some of the kinks from the opener.

Here’s everything you need to know before Saturday night’s home opener, which kicks off at 6:30 p.m. CT.

ESPN’s SP+ predicts score for LSU’s home opener against Grambling

There is no betting line available for LSU’s home opener, but SP+ predicts a nearly 50-point margin.

Games between power programs and FCS teams can be difficult to handicap.

The better team will often show mercy and take its foot off the gas, but not always, as evidenced by Oregon laying 81 points on Portland State in Week 1, the most that program has scored in a game since 1936.

Often, sports books choose to stay away entirely rather than set spreads of 40 or more points. But ESPN’s SP+ model casts no such aspersions.

Proprietor Bill Connelly releases the model’s score predictions every week for every game, and SP+ predicts quite a wide margin for LSU’s home opener against an in-state FCS opponent in Grambling, for which there is not currently a betting spread available.

SP+ sets the projected margin at 48.5 points, and it has the Tigers ultimately winning the game 54-5.

Grambling isn’t likely to score five points exactly in this one, but you get the picture. Despite LSU’s struggles in the opening loss to Florida State, its home opener at Tiger Stadium on Saturday night shouldn’t even be close.

Omar Speights says Harold Perkins will play more outside the box against Grambling

Harold Perkins could be back in his old role on Saturday night.

A lot was made of LSU’s decision to use [autotag]Harold Perkins[/autotag] in a traditional linebacker role last week, rather than the free flowing player we saw last year.

Perkins pass rushing ability was limited and he wasn’t able to make plays near the line of scrimmage.

According to LSU linebacker [autotag]Omar Speights[/autotag], Perkins will play something closer to his 2022 role on Saturday night.

“I think this week we’ll put him more outside the box. Let him be him type stuff this week,” Speights said.

Speights added the move will open up more opportunities for [autotag]Greg Penn III[/autotag], who manned that inside linebacker spot for much of last year.

LSU’s defense came out flat in the second half last week, but Speights said the focus and intensity at practice this week has improved.

With SEC play beginning next week, it’s critical for LSU to use this week as a chance to get right.

Five things we can learn when LSU hosts Grambling on Saturday night

Here are five things we might be able to learn when LSU takes on Grambling this week.

It can be difficult to get meaningful takeaways from a game such as LSU’s matchup with Grambling this weekend.

These SEC vs. FCS matchups typically all play out the same way. The SEC school takes care of business in the first half behind a sheer talent advantage before turning it over to the second-stringers in the final quarters.

This one is a little different. LSU is coming off a loss and needs to show improvement in specific areas. This weekend should give it a chance to work on some things.

Here are five things we can learn when LSU plays Grambling on Saturday night.
