Brian Kelly ‘giddy’ to have Maason Smith back on the field in Week 2 against Grambling

Maason Smith will return on Saturday night after serving a one-game NCAA suspension.

It wasn’t the reason the Tigers lost on Sunday night against Florida State, but Maason Smith’s absence certainly played a role as LSU’s defense struggled to slow the Seminoles down in the second half.

Smith was serving a one-game NCAA suspension in the opener, but he’ll be back on the field on Saturday night against Grambling for his first game action since tearing his ACL in last season’s opener.

Coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] couldn’t contain his excitement when asked about Smith’s impending return on Tuesday.

“Giddy,” Kelly said. “Is that a good enough word? I’d say gritty but giddy is the best I could come up with in one word. No, I mean, he obviously impacts our defense. You know, he allows us to do different things, he’s a guy that can play the five-technique, he can play the three, he can play the one, the zero. I mean, his flexibility on our defense provides a new dimension that we’re excited about getting him back.”

Still, Kelly isn’t going to rush Smith back into a major workload given that he’s still not quite 100% after recovering from a knee injury.

“I think that we have the be realistic,” Kelly said on Wednesday during the SEC Coaches Teleconference, according to On3. “When you haven’t played in over a year, he’s not going to be able to play the duration of the game. If we can get somewhere near 30 snaps, we’d be really excited about that. Again, he’s practicing for us but it’s going to take a little bit of time. Hopefully, we can get somewhere in that range of quality snaps from him and give him the chance to impact the game.”

[autotag]Mekhi Wingo[/autotag], [autotag]Jacobian Guillory[/autotag] and [autotag]Jordan Jefferson[/autotag] held down the interior on Sunday night, but Smith’s talent and versatility should provide a major boost to this defense going forward.

Brian Kelly releases Week 2 injury report, updates John Emery Jr.’s status

Armoni Goodwin has been upgraded to questionable after missing the opener, but John Emery Jr. will miss another game this weekend.

If there is one bright spot the Tigers can take away from Sunday night’s 45-24 loss to Florida State in Orlando, it’s that the team emerged entirely healthy.

There were no new injuries that coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] reported to the media this week. Running back [autotag]Armoni Goodwin[/autotag], who was listed as doubtful last week and indeed missed the opener, has been upgraded to questionable as he recovers from a hamstring injury.

Meanwhile, receiver and return specialist [autotag]Aaron Anderson[/autotag] suffered an unspecified injury in the loss to the Seminoles but was listed by Kelly as probable entering the Grambling game.

Running back [autotag]John Emery Jr.[/autotag], who returned to the team in camp after spending most of the offseason focusing on academics, was unavailable for the game against Florida State and will be sidelined once again this weekend, though Kelly neglected to go into detail on the reasoning or a potential timetable for his return.

LSU should be close to full strength as it looks to fix the flaws from last week in Saturday night’s home opener against an in-state HBCU opponent in the Tigers come to town.

Five things to know about Grambling ahead of LSU’s Week 2 contest

Here are five things to know about Grambling before it arrives in Tiger Stadium on Saturday.

For the second time in program history, LSU will host an HBCU in Tiger Stadium on Saturday night.

The Grambling State Tigers, led by former NFL head coach Hue Jackson, will come to town. LSU is a heavy favorite and looks to keep its 40-year winning streak against in-state schools alive.

This game comes at a needed time for Brian Kelly’s squad as they try to work out the issues from the three-score loss at the hands of Florida State.

Here are five things to know about Grambling before it arrives in Tiger Stadium on Saturday night.

Times, TV info set for LSU football games vs. Grambling, Mississippi State

LSU will face Grambling in a night game at Death Valley before traveling to Starkville for a morning kickoff.

We already know that the LSU Tigers will begin the 2023 season in primetime when they face Florida State in Orlando at 6:30 p.m. CT on Sept. 3. Now, times and broadcast details have been set for Weeks 2 and 3 contests against Grambling and Mississippi State.

The Tigers will face Grambling at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 9 in a game that will be stream-only on ESPN+ and SEC Network+. This will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs and LSU’s second game against an HBCU school after it hosted Southern last season.

Then, on Sept. 16, the Tigers will travel to Davis-Wade Stadium in Starkville to take on the Bulldogs for a morning kickoff at 11 a.m. on ESPN.

LSU took last season’s game 31-16 and hasn’t lost in Starkville since 2017. This will be the first time the Tigers have faced new MSU coach Zach Arnett, who took over after Mike Leach unexpectedly passed away in December.
