Sentry Tournament of Champions odds, predictions, picks and PGA Tour best bets

Analyzing the 2020 Sentry Tournament of Champions, with PGA Tour betting odds, picks, predictions and best bets.

The 2020 portion of the 2019-20 PGA Tour schedule kicks off this week with the Sentry Tournament of Champions at the Plantation Course at Kapalua. A field of thirty-four features five of the top 10 golfers in the Official World Golf Ranking.

The key stats best suited to the 7,518-yard, par-73 venue are:

  • Strokes Gained: Approach
  • Strokes Gained: Ball-Striking
  • Bogey Avoidance
  • Sand Saves Gained
  • Good Drives Gained
  • Proximity 175-200 Yards

My model at Fantasy National looks at the most recent 36 rounds played on courses with Bermuda greens.

Patrick Cantlay (+1400)

Cantlay is the fourth-best golfer in attendance by the OWGR measure. His only 2019 win came at the Memorial Tournament, but he preceded it by back-to-back T-3 results and followed it up late in the year with runner-up finishes at the BMW Championship and Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. He has the most appealing odds of the top golfers in the elite field with a $10 bet returning a profit of $140.

Collin Morikawa (+2200)

Morikawa offers a better return than Cantlay. A rookie in 2019, his first career win came at the Barracuda Championship. He enters the week ranked 65th by the OWGR and most recently finished T-5 at the Japan Tour’s Dunlop Phoenix. He has a great approach game and excels from our key proximity distance this week.

Corey Conners (+2800)

Conners won’t get the full advantage of his driver this week at a venue with wide, rolling fairways allowing all in attendance to bomb it off the tee, but he will get something of a reprieve from his usual struggles on the greens. Each of the last five TOC champions finished at or below 21-under par, and Conners certainly has the ability to go that low.

Matt Kuchar (+2800)

Much of Kuchar’s career success has come early in the calendar year. The 24th-ranked golfer in the world won twice last season, at the Mayakoba Golf Classic and the Sony Open in Hawaii. He was also the runner-up at both the RBC Heritage and WGC-Match Play. He ranks second to Conners by my stat model.

Joaquin Niemann (+3000)

Niemann is coming off a Presidents Cup loss as a member of the International team. He gained entry to this event with his first career victory at A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier to kick off the 2019-20 PGA Tour campaign, and has been one of the most active golfers early in the season. His strong approach game gives him an advantage on the expansive greens.

Keith Mitchell (+4000)

Mitchell is our longest dart throw at a tournament without a lot of betting value due to the small field of elites. He also earned his first career victory in 2019 at The Honda Classic in early March. He held off World No. 1 Brooks Koepka on Sunday, and showed he can compete in strong fields.

2020 PGA Tour major odds: Patrick Reed looking to silence critics

Analyzing Patrick Reed’s chances and betting odds of winning another major championship during the 2020 PGA Tour season.

[jwplayer Aaoz8cWl]

Will Patrick Reed win a PGA Tour major championship in 2020? Based off BetMGM‘s golf betting odds, I analyze Captain America’s best opportunities to win along with some of the best potential golf betting lines to cash in on Reed’s play this year. This piece is part of a SportsbookWire series, which will look at the PGA Tour’s biggest names and their chances of winning a major championship in 2020.

Patrick Reed’s 2019 PGA Tour Highlights

  • T-5 Rocket Mortgage Classic
  • Won The Northern Trust
  • T-4 BMW PGA Championship
  • 3rd Hero World Challenge

PGA Tour odds to win a major in 2020

Justin Thomas 4 +450 Oct. 2019 2017 PGA Championship
Dustin Johnson 5 +200 Feb. 2019 2016 US Open

Justin Rose 8 +400 Jan. 2019 2013 US Open
Xander Schauffele 9 +500 Jan. 2019 NA
Tommy Fleetwood 10 +600 NA NA
Patrick Reed 12 +1100 Aug. 2019 2018 Masters

Reed’s odds are appealing as a recent major champion. He has the same odds as Matt Kuchar and is priced just below the likes of Paul Casey and Louis Oosthuizen. He has been in the mix on Sunday at all four of the majors in recent years, and is a nice betting play at better than 10-to-1 odds to claim his second career major championship in 2020.

Where is Patrick Reed’s best chance of winning a major in 2020?

Event 2020 Venue Best career result Odds
Masters Augusta National Won (2018) +5000

US Open Winged Foot 4th (2018 +6600
Open Championship Royal St. George’s 10th (2019) +5000

Reed followed up his 2018 Masters win with a T-36 last year. His 10th-place finish at The Open last year drops his odds in 2020, though he had previously missed the cut in two of five tries. Though he missed the cut at each of the last two PGA Championship’s following his co-runner-up finish in 2017, the odds at TPC Harding are enticing.

Will Patrick Reed win a major in 2020?

The price is right for Reed, who typically sees suppressed odds as a well-known name. He struggled at the recent Presidents Cup following controversy at the Hero World Challenge, but he has been well-fueled by added motivation over his career. He’s a good play at +1100 odds to win at least one of the four majors without needing to specify the exact location.

2020 PGA Tour major odds: Phil Mickelson priced among the longshots

Analyzing Phil Mickelson’s chances and betting odds of winning another major championship during the 2020 PGA Tour season.

Will Phil Mickelson win a PGA Tour major championship in 2020? Based off BetMGM‘s golf betting odds, I analyze Mickelson’s best opportunities to win along with some of the best potential golf betting lines to cash in on Phil’s play this year.

This piece is part of a SportsbookWire series, which will look at the PGA Tour‘s biggest names and their chances of winning a major championship in 2020.

Heading into his seventh year since his last major title, Mickelson has the same odds as Chez ReavieIan Poulter and Matt Wallace to win one in 2020. He’ll turn 50 years old in mid-June, and he faded down the stretch in 2019, after claiming career victory No. 44 at Pebble Beach.

Open Championship Royal St. George’s Won (2013) +10000

Mickelson’s best odds unsurprisingly come at Augusta National, where he has three of his five career major victories. His worst odds come at Royal St. George’s, where he tied for second in the 2011 Open Championship.

Will Phil Mickelson win a major in 2020?

Lefty’s best major result last season was a T-18 finish at Augusta in April. He missed the cut at The Open and has now missed the weekend in four of his last 10 major appearances. He’s worth a small-unit wager as a longshot at The Open based on his past success at the venue, but he should be avoided everywhere else with less appealing odds.

As one of six major champions currently in the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking Rose is priced accordingly, with Thomas, Cantlay, Schauffele and Fleetwood possessing longer odds. He’ll turn 40 years old July 30, and has six worldwide wins over the last three years.

PGA Championship TPC Harding Park T-3 (2012) +2000

Open Championship Royal St. George’s T-2 (2018) +2000

Rose has three top-10 finishes in majors over the last two years, including two at the U.S. Open. He hasn’t missed the cut in a major since the 2017 PGA Championship. The Englishman had a disappointing showing the last time The Open was at Royal St. George’s, as he finished just T-44 in 2011. His best odds for 2020 come at the Masters, where he missed the cut in 2019 to snap a streak of five straight top-20 showings there.

Will Justin Rose win a major in 2020?

Rose fits the mold for the generic “win a major” bet. He has top placings in each of the four events and is frequently in the mix on Sunday, on the first page of the leaderboard. Back him to claim his second victory, with Augusta National the most likely venue.

Cantlay shares the second-highest odds among those in the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking. His best finish in a major to date was a T-3 at last year’s PGA Championship, but he was able to pick up his second PGA Tour win last season at the Memorial. He’s a solid bet while trying to get ahead of his major breakout.

US Open Winged Foot T-21 (2011, 2019) +2200
Open Championship Royal St. George’s T-12 (2018) +2800

Cantlay collected two top-10 finishes in majors last season after never having placed inside the top 10 in six previous major appearances as a professional. A great ball-striker, his lowest odds come at the US Open, where he’ll be able to avoid the trademark trouble of the long, thick rough.

Will Patrick Cantlay win a major in 2020?

I prefer Cantlay on the generic “win a major” bet rather than trying to single out the specific event. The second-best golfer in the world without a major has a well-balanced and all-around strong game which makes him a competitor every time he tees it up. Put a multi-unit bet on the +500 odds to win one, rather than spreading the money around on single events.

Rahm missed the cut at two of the four majors in 2018, but he finished fourth or T-4 at each of the other two. He also missed the cut at last season’s PGA Championship in between a T-9 finish at the Masters and a T-3 at the U.S. Open. His best odds in 2020 come at the Masters, which is the only major where he has never missed a cut.

Will Jon Rahm win a major in 2020?

Among the golfers in the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking Rahm is one of the ones I like the most for the generic major bet. His best and worst sides can be difficult to predict, and his odds aren’t attractive enough at any of the individual events.

Fowler has fallen to 23rd in the Official World Golf Ranking this year after closing out 2018 at No. 11. Still, his major odds remain among the world’s elite due to his status as a public favorite in the U.S. and worldwide. He has the same odds as Justin Thomas, and I greatly prefer the latter.

Fowler had an incredible run of major success in 2014 which also included a T-5 at the Masters. Since then, has competed in 20 majors with three missed cuts and five top 10s. He has three career top 10s at both The Open and the US Open, but it’s the Masters where his best major result of a solo runner-up occurred in 2018.

The Open Championship returns to Royal St. George’s this year, where Fowler claimed a T-5 in 2011.

Will Rickie Fowler win a major in 2020?

Fowler’s always in the hunt at the majors, but at +450 odds, it just isn’t worth the venture. There are several better golfers available with more appealing odds. If you want action on Fowler, bet him at The Open.

  • Won WGC-Mexico Championship

Johnson’s (relatively) poor finish to 2019 nearly erases the memory of him finishing as a runner-up at both of the year’s first two majors. What’s almost as surprising is the fact Johnson still has only one major championship victory in his career, despite 16 other top 10s. Ranked fifth by the Official World Golf Ranking, he shares top odds for an overdue second major win in 2020.

Johnson will always be a top favorite at the US Open, and his runner-up finish at the 2019 PGA Championship is reflected in the odds which list him as the No. 2 favorite to Brooks Koepka. He showed in 2019 he could one day conquer Augusta National.

The Open Championship returns to the venue, Royal St. George’s, where Johnson claimed his first runner-up finish in a major in 2011. The odds aren’t reflective of this previous success.

Will Dustin Johnson win a major in 2020?

I love the number for Johnson at The Open. Overseas in Kent, England, Johnson can get a reprieve from the added pressure the former World No. 1 routinely faces in the majors.

I’ll be betting DJ at his longest number among the major championships, rather than going after his odds in the US which are suppressed for a public betting favorite.

Brooks Koepka 1 +200 July 2019 2019 PGA Championship
Rory McIlroy 2 +250 Nov. 2019 2014 PGA Championship
Jon Rahm 3 +350 Jan. 2018 NA
Justin Thomas 4 +450 Oct. 2019 2017 PGA Championship

While Rory won four times on the PGA Tour in 2019 and now has 26 worldwide wins in 309 career events, he hasn’t won a major since going back-to-back at The Open and PGA Championship in 2014. He has eight top-10 major finishes in that time, however, including two in 2019.

Where is Rory McIlroy’s best chance of winning a major in 2020?

Event 2020 Venue Best career result Odds
Masters Augusta National 4th (2015) +800
PGA Championship TPC Harding Park Won (2012, 2014) +1000
US Open Winged Foot Won (2011) +1000
Open Championship Royal St. George’s Won (2014) +1200

McIlroy’s best chance of ending his major drought in 2020, according to BetMGM, comes at the one major separating him from the career grand slam. Last year’s event was his first time finishing outside the top-10 at Augusta National since 2013.

He finished T-25 the last time The Open was at Royal St. George’s in 2011, and he has never played professionally at either Winged Foot or TPC Harding Park.

Will Rory McIlroy win a major in 2020?

McIlroy certainly finished up his 2019 season well, and he has been a strong early-year golfer for the majority of his career, as seen by his top finishes a year ago. His frequent trips to the winner’s circle in 2019 should boost his confidence heading to Augusta as a rightful favorite.

I’m betting McIlroy at the Masters and pairing up a green jacket win with each of the other majors, as well. Victories at the Masters and Open, for example, would return a profit of $1,160, for example, with +11600 odds.

2020 PGA Tour major odds: Brooks Koepka favored at 3 of 4

Analyzing Brooks Koepka’s chances and betting odds of winning another major championship during the 2020 PGA Tour season.

[jwplayer Aaoz8cWl]

Will World No. 1 Brooks Koepka win a PGA Tour major championship in 2020? Based off BetMGM‘s golf betting odds, I analyze Koepka’s best opportunities to win along with some of the best potential golf betting lines to cash in on his play this year. This piece is part of a new SportsbookWire series, which will look at the PGA Tour’s biggest names and their chances of winning a major championship in 2020.

Brooks Koepka’s 2019 PGA Tour Highlights

  • T-2 The Honda Classic
  • T-2 Masters Tournament
  • 4th AT&T Byron Nelson
  • Won PGA Championship
  • 2nd US Open
  • T-4 Open Championship
  • Won WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational
  • T-3 Tour Championship

Koepka is rightfully a favorite to win at least one major in 2020 after winning a total of four over the last three seasons and finishing no worse than T-4 in all four majors in 2019. Like Tiger, he tailors his schedule around the majors.

He’s the safest bet on the board, just be prepared to make a significant investment for a worthwhile return. A $10 bet will fetch a modest profit of $20.

Where is Brooks Koepka’s best chance of winning a major in 2020?

Event 2020 Venue Best career result Odds
Masters Augusta National T-2 (2019) +900
PGA Championship TPC Harding Park Won (2018, 2019) +800
US Open Winged Foot Won (2017, 2018) +800
Open Championship Royal St. George’s T-4 (2019) +1000

Koepka is the favorite to win the year’s final three majors, while he trails only McIlroy (+800) at the Masters. His best odds are at the two majors he has each won twice before. He’s a slightly better value at the Masters, which hosts the smallest field of the four majors.

Will Brooks Koepka win a major in 2020?

Yes.

Instead of laying a large wager on Koepka to win “a major,” bet him with smaller amounts at each of the four. My best play is to parlay victories at both the US Open and PGA Championship, where a $10 bet will fetch a profit of $800 with +8000 odds.

Adding the Masters to the mix for a three-leg parlay would profit $8,090 on a $10 wager.
