Adidas’ Rolling Links collection blends golf and skate culture

This collection’s shoes, shirts, pants and hats are at home in the fairway and the skatepark.

At first glance, golf and skateboarding might seem like polar opposites. One is all about tradition, quiet courses and polite applause, while the other revels in street style, tricks and a bit of rebellious flair. But strip away assumptions and preconceptions, and you can start to see that when it comes to apparel and footwear, the two cultures have more overlap than you might expect.

These days, public courses are filled with players wearing flashy sneakers, colorful socks and hats that wouldn’t look out of place at a skate park. Whether you’re rolling down the fairway listening to Coldplay or bumping at a half-pipe to Cage The Elephant, style is key.

With the release of the Rolling Links line of apparel and footwear, Adidas is trying to tie golf and skate culture more closely together, merging relaxed-fitting shirts, sweatshirts and tops with mix-matched socks and street-style footwear that could be at home on the tee at Torrey Pines or a few miles away at the Carmel Valley Skatepark.

The venerable Adidas Superstar sneakers, which were released in 2020 as golf shoes for the first time to mark the shoe’s 50th anniversary, are one of the stars of the Rolling Links line. Adidas’ three-stripe logo is presented in two colors on this spikeless shoe, while the removable kiltie is a nod to golf shoes that might have been worn 50 years ago.

The Rolling Links Mock Neck polo is made with a thicker, 100 percent cotton material and designed with a loose, relaxed fit, while the Rolling Links Crewneck Sweatshirt is made using 88 percent recycled polyamide with elastane and slipping it on feels retro and hip at the same time.

The complete Rolling Links collection is available at adidas.com, and more images of the items are below:

Masters: FootJoy releases Premiere ‘Pastel Pack’

Max Homa, Cameron Young and Will Zalatoris are expected to wear the Premiere Series Field Pastel as they play Augusta National.

Before the start of last month’s Players Championship, FootJoy teamed up with West Coast style maven John Buscemi to drop a limited version of the Premiere Series Field and Wilcox shoes. Those stylish, limited-edition shoes are long gone, but for the 2023 Masters, FootJoy is dropping more limited-edition shoes, but the Premiere “Pastel Pack” is an homage to the coming of spring.

Available starting at 10 a.m. Eastern on April 6, which happens to be the same day as the opening round of this year’s Masters tournament, the Pastel Pack is comprised of three versions of the Premiere Series Field shoe for men ($210), with each having a different outside color — Powder Blue, Primrose Pink and Hazy Yellow. There is also a women’s shoe in the collection, the new Premiere Series Issette ($190), that has a removable kiltie, in Primrose Pink.

This week at the Masters, FootJoy staffers Max Homa, Cameron Young and Will Zalatoris are expected to wear the Premiere Series Field Pastel as they play Augusta National. Get a closer look at the shoes below.

Adidas ZG23 golf shoes

A redesigned outsole with two midsole foams and a waterproof upper makes the ZG23 a lightweight shoe that still delivers performance.

No professional golfer or weekend player ever asked for a heavier golf shoe, so companies are constantly trying to balance weight savings with high performance. For 2023, Adidas has updated its premium lightweight offering, the ZG Series, by reworking the traction elements in the outsole, utilizing two unique midsole foams and improving the waterproof upper in the new ZG23.

At the heart of the ZG23 ($200), which Collin Morikawa is expected to wear this season, is a redesigned midsole made of two different materials. Adidas designers used a soft foam called Lightstrike Pro on the bottom to provide extra cushioning when you walk, and they surrounded it with a slightly firmer material called Lightstrike that helps increase lateral stability in specific areas.

There are still six replaceable cleats on the bottom of the shoe, and Adidas repositioned the smaller traction elements after studying the swings of its staff players – golfers such as Morikawa, Xander Schauffele and Danielle Kang – and learning which specific areas on the outside need extra connection to the ground.

Finally, the top of the shoe, referred to as the upper, was made with a four-layer, waterproof material called Sprintskin. It blends woven materials with polyurethanes to keep moisture from getting inside the shoes without adding excessive weight.

In addition to the standard lace-up models for men and women, Adidas is offering versions of the ZG23 that have a ratcheting BOA Fit system ($220). By turning a dial on the shoes, a system of wires gently secures a wrap-over piece across the top of your foot to allow for micro-adjustments in the fit.

Masters: Tiger Woods not wearing Nike golf shoes at Augusta National

Tiger was rocking FootJoy shoes for the second consecutive day at Augusta National.

As of Monday afternoon, Tiger Woods had not announced whether he intends to play in the 2022 Masters or not, but for the second straight day the five-time winner was at Augusta National hitting balls and practicing.

The new TaylorMade Stealth Plus+ driver was in the bag, along with his trusty Scotty Cameron Newport 2, the putter he has used to win 14 of his 15 major championships.

What is noteworthy, however, is that for the second day in a row, the newly-minted Hall of Famer was not wearing shoes with a swoosh. Woods wore a peach-colored Nike shirt and black pants on Sunday afternoon along with a pair of black FootJoy Premiere Packard shoes. On Monday, he matched a navy blue Nike polo with light gray pants and donned a pair of white FootJoy Premiere Packard shoes.

Golfweek contacted representatives from FootJoy and was told that the company has no comment at this time. Golfweek also reached out to Nike for comment but was unsuccessful in getting a response.

The FootJoy Premiere family of shoes were the most popular golf shoes on the PGA Tour in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. The company discontinued them briefly, then re-released the Premiere in 2021. Today’s versions are much lighter than the originals, thanks to the outsoles now being made from thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) instead of leather. There are also lighter materials in the midsole that enhance cushioning, but the waterproof leather upper still provides significant lateral stability.

Woods is scheduled to speak with the media on Tuesday.

New brand Payntr Golf hoping to build off UK success with unveiling of X 001 F shoes

Payntr Golf has released the Payntr X 001 F with a variety of contrasting elements to help golfers achieve a controlled and powerful swing.

Payntr Golf is a new brand that is making waves in the footwear market, all stemming from a partnership between Payntr Golf co-founders Mike Forsey and David Payntr.

Forsey is a U.S.- based golf footwear expert with more than 30 years of experience across the globe. Paynter is a former professional cricketer who was behind the success of the Payntr athletic footwear company in the U.K.

Forsey led the technology team when developing the group’s latest shoe release, the Payntr X 001 F. The shoe uses a variety of contrasting elements to help golfers achieve a controlled and powerful swing. Payntr labels the Performance Multiplied Innovation ethos (force x velocity = power).

Payntr Golf entered the industry earlier this year with the debut of a golf shoe. The company’s goal was to use a unique traction system to create a stable base that complements a powerful golf swing.

The Payntr x 001 F golf shoe is waterproof with a flexible textile base with Clarino microfiber skin, all treated with a superhydrophobic NeverWet solution. The shoes are lightweight and comfortable with soft and responsive underfoot cushioning with a PMX Foam midsole.

“Payntr Golf gives golfers a traction advantage. Our footwear amplifies the golfer’s ability to use the ground effectively to generate more power to the ball,” said Forsey.

Nike’s limited-edition British Open footwear is inspired by dartboards

The limited-edition Air Max 90 G, Air Zoom Infinity Tour and Air Zoom Victory Tour take their cues from the popular “19th hole” activity.

For the past few seasons, Nike staff players have received special, limited-edition versions of the company’s footwear to use during major championships. These shoes are given themes, often that match the venues where the tournaments are being played. So, while this year’s Masters theme was using recycled materials, during the recent PGA Championship at Kiawah in May, some players’ shoes had a seersucker pattern of light blue and white.

This week, with the British Open taking place at Royal St. George’s Golf Club in Sandwich, England, Nike has created three more limited-edition versions of its Air Max 90 G, Air Zoom Infinity Tour and Air Zoom Victory Tour 2 shoes. The theme is games played in pubs, taprooms and the “19th hole” in England. That means darts, pool and snooker. The shoes are below, and as you can see, they are trimmed in cork to commemorate the dartboards and green to represent the felt of a pool table.

PGA Championship: Nike’s Lowcountry inspired golf footwear

Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka, Tony Finau and other Nike athletes will be wearing special shoes at the 2021 PGA Championship.

When companies make commemorative gear to sell during major championships, they gravitate toward local themes.

For instance, two years ago, when the PGA Championship was being contested at the Black Course at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, New York, the famous warning sign near the first tee and the grittiness of New York City were highlighted. Last year, when the tournament visited TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, psychedelic colors, tie-dye patterns and peace symbols were everywhere.

This week, the PGA Championship is being played at the Ocean Course on Kiawah Island in South Carolina. The area is referred to as The Lowcountry region, and is known for boating, fishing, great golf courses and boils on the beaches that feature steaming crab, sausage, corn and potatoes. It’s laid back, gentile and not a place where people hurry and rush too much.

To celebrate the 2021 PGA Championship, Nike is picking up on those themes for new versions of four golf shoes.
