Warriors would have to show patience to re-sign Lauri Markkanen

The Golden State Warriors would need to wait until the 2025 free agency period to re-sign Lauri Markkanen if they acquired him via trade.

The Golden State Warriors are reportedly interested in acquiring Lauri Markkanen via trade. The rumor mill has been churning out potential trade packages to send the impressive big man to the Bay Area in recent weeks. According to reports, Utah are pushing for a package centered around Brandin Podziemski and future draft capital, while the Warriors would prefer to keep the sophomore on their roster.

Another hurdle Golden State must face if they choose to acquire Markkanen is that he is in the final year of his current contract. The Warriors don’t have the available cap space to negotiate a contract extension with the big man instantly. According to Marc Stein, the franchise’s continued interest in a potential trade could indicate a level of confidence that the Warriors could re-sign Markkanen in the 2025 offseason.

“The Warriors’ ongoing interest in Markkanen, furthermore, suggests they have confidence in their ability to sign the 7-foot Finn to a contract extension next summer should they ultimately persuade Utah to consummate a trade after weeks of discussion between the teams that began in conjunction with the June 26 draft,” Stein Reported. “Golden State, remember, does not possess the salary cap space to execute an immediate renegotiate-and-extend deal with Markkanen that Utah has and would have to wait until after the season to secure his long-term future in the Bay Area. Renegotiate-and-extend deals can only be completed with cap space.”

Currently, there doesn’t appear to be a framework in place between Utah and Golden State; as such, a trade isn’t projected to be imminent. As Stein detailed, the Warriors have multiple moving parts to consider before signing off on any deal.

Nevertheless, Markkanen would fill a clear need within Golden State’s rotation and could position them to contend for a championship in the near future. Whether Mike Dunleavy Jr. can get a deal over the line will remain to be seen.

3 players the Warriors should target on the buyout market

Here are three players the Golden State Warriors could target on the buy-out market.

The Golden State Warriors made a minor trade at the Feb. 8 deadline. They sent Cory Joseph to the Indiana Pacers in return for a second-round draft pick. They now have two open roster spots. As such, there is an expectation that the front office will be busy in the buyout market, where they could look to add a veteran talent while also converting a two-way contract to round out the rotation.

An important thing to note is the Warriors are a second-apron team. That means they’re limited to signing players who were earning less than the non-taxpayer mid-level exception before being bought out. As such, that would rule out talents such as Spencer Dinwiddie, who was earning $18.8 million before being brought out by the Toronto Raptors.

Nevertheless, there are some valuable talents shaking loose after a flurry of trade moves around the NBA. Here are three potential buyout targets the Warriors could show interest in ahead of the March 1 deadline.

Warriors struck out in pursuit of Alex Caruso at the trade deadline

The Golden State Warriors were unable to secure Alex Caruso at the trade deadline.

The Golden State Warriors endured a quiet trade deadline. The franchise reportedly had been exploring options to improve the roster following a difficult first half of the season. However, the only move was a deal that sent veteran guard Cory Joseph to the Indiana Pacers, thus opening a roster spot.

According to Shams Charania, the Warriors were negotiating to obtain Alex Caruso from the Chicago Bulls. Their attempts were unsuccessful, and the defensive-minded guard will remain in the Windy City for at least the remainder of the season.

“Sources told me that the Warriors had some conversations on Alex Caruso (Thursday),” Charania said. “That’s a player they have value for, but the Bulls have had a high asking price on him. The Bulls were at least open for conversations across their roster, including on Caruso.”

Caruso would have been a strong fit for the Warriors, either as part of their starting unit or coming off the bench. Nevertheless, Golden State’s willingness to let the trade deadline pass clearly indicates their faith in the current roster to turn the season around.

Of course, the Warriors can still look to upgrade their team via the buy-out market. Yet, as a second-apron franchise, they will be limited to adding players that were earning less than the taxpayer mid-level exception as part of the new punitive rules in the Collective Barganing Agreement.

Still, there should be multiple talents available, and it will be interesting to see how Mike Dunleavy Jr. pivots to round out the rotation.

3 reported Warriors targets who are now off the table

Here are 3 players who were reportedly being targeted by the Golden State Warriors that have been moved at the trade deadline.

When a team is struggling to reach its potential, it’s inevitably listed among trade rumors heading into the trade deadline. The Golden State Warriors’ struggles have ensured they’ve been linked to numerous stars and role players over the past few months.

With the trade deadline just hours away, however, many of those rumored targets are off the market, having been snapped up by other teams. Some of those targets are high-end role players capable of being starters in the right situation. Others are ancillary players that strengthen a team’s rotations ahead of the second half of the season.

The chances of the Warriors making a move at the deadline are looking slimmer by the minute. However, while deals can still be made nothing should be ruled out. Still, which players are no longer on the market is worth knowing. Here are the top three rumored Warriors targets that have already changed teams on Thursday.

3 centers the Golden State Warriors could target at the trade deadline

Here are three centers who could add size to the Golden State Warriors roster.

One of the biggest flaws in the current Golden State Warriors roster is the lack of size at the center position. There is a genuine lack of rim protection available to Steve Kerr, and at times, it has left the team susceptible to bully-ball tactics from other teams around the league. Paul George pointed out that flaw earlier in the season.

As such, it seems logical to expect Golden State to explore potential trades that would give the franchise a bigger body in the middle of the court. Whether that trade brings back a player that suits the team’s style of play or forces Kerr to alter his game plan is something that remains to be seen.

Nevertheless, multiple big men are reportedly available should the right offer cross their team’s desk. Here are three centers that could add some much-needed size to Golden State’s roster at the trade deadline.

3 role players the Warriors should target at the trade deadline

Here are three role players the Golden State Warriors could target at the NBA Trade Deadline.

If the Golden State Warriors are going to make a move at the February 8 trade deadline, it will likely be to upgrade their bench rotation. Steve Kerr recently discussed how hard it would be to upgrade the Warriors’ current talent pool. However, there’s always room for improvement, especially on the bench.

Golden State have struggled with their depth this season. Injuries, slumps, and suspensions have all played a part in the team’s struggle to roll out a consistent lineup and build a legitimate identity. With that in mind, it makes sense for Mike Dunleavy Jr. to explore some smaller deals to potentially give Kerr additional flexibility within his rotations.

The upside to making a smaller move is that it doesn’t cost as many assets. It also means Golden State’s core rotation will likely remain intact. However, figuring out what areas of the team to strengthen is never as easy as it sounds.

Here are three role players who could potentially improve the Warriors’ deep-bench rotation for the second half of the season and the playoffs.

Warriors rumors: Golden State has ‘checked in’ on Alex Caruso

The Golden State Warriors have reportedly registered their interest in Alex Caruso.

The Golden State Warriors will undoubtedly be exploring potential trade options ahead of the February 8 trade deadline. With the team rooted as the 12th seed in the Western Conference, Mike Dunleavy Jr. will likely explore all of his options before deciding on how to move forward for the second half of the season.

Golden State has multiple tradeable assets at its disposal. As such, few players would be out of reach should the franchise decide to pursue them. One player that has reportedly found themselves on the Warriors’ radar is Alex Caruso. According to K.C. Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago, the Warriors have clarified their interest in the versatile guard.

“League sources indicated previously to NBC Sports Chicago that several teams, including the Golden State Warriors, have called on the first-team All-Defense member,” Johnson reported.

Caruso is seen as a “winning player” due to his versatile defensive skillset and willingness to fit any role asked of him. He’s a capable shot-creator and can operate as a tertiary playmaker when required. Nevertheless, his true value is on the defensive side of the ball.

The Bulls are rumored to be looking for an “OG-Anunoby” type return for Caruso, so the Warriors would need to part with at least one of their younger players. Still, if Dunleavy Jr. deems Caruso as the missing piece to get the Warriors back on track, that asking price is unlikely to be a stumbling block.

With less than 48 hours remaining until the trade deadline passes, it will be interesting to see how the Warriors decide to move forward.

Quarantine Update: How are the Warriors staying busy with the NBA season on hold?

It’s time to check in on a trio of members from the Golden State Warriors during the NBA hiatus.

After over three weeks without a basketball game, players from around the league are finding new and creative ways to fill their time. Members from the Golden State Warriors have been checking in on social media to update how they’ve been spending their time in quarantine.

Peloton bike rides, video games, interactive fan Q&A sessions and music are just some of the options players from the Warriors have chosen to take up their time.

Take a look below to see what a few members of the Warriors have been up to during the NBA hiatus.

Stephen Curry

Golden State’s two-time Most Valuable Player has been active since game action was stopped in early March. During the NBA shut down, Curry displayed a new project he’s been working on with a well-renowned comedian.

Before the NBA season was suspended, the six-time All-Star linked up with Kevin Hart for his first-ever vlogging experience. The movie star provided Curry with tips and tricks during his debut vlog.

Along with vlogger, Curry can add substitute teacher to his list of many titles. When he was hosting a pop quiz with fellow NBA players on Instagram, Curry mentioned he’s been serving as a teacher’s assistant for his daughter’s second-grade class.

Eric Paschall

After participating in a Q&A of his own, Golden State’s rookie is turning to music.

The Villanova product was asking his followers where he can find a music production center. An “MPC” is a device that provides a variety of sounds to make beats for different types of music.

On Sunday night, Eric Paschall tweeted he was “about to pick up a new hobby!”

Ky Bowman

Another Golden State rookie is showing off his talent away from the court. With no basketball on the schedule, Ky Bowman has picked up the pen and paper.

On Saturday, Bowman tweeted about his poetry.

When the former two-way point guard isn’t busy with poetry, you can catch him streaming his video game talent on Twitch. Bowman tweeted about his expertise for the famous fighting game Tekken.

73-win season voted greatest Warriors record by fans in NBA bracketology

In a fan vote, Golden State’s 73-9 regular season from 2015-16 edged out other accomplishments as the best record in Warriors’ history.

Over the past five seasons, the Golden State Warriors have brought a bevy of awards back home to the Bay Area. To help decide the top accomplishment in their history, the Warriors released a bracket of 16 moments for fans to vote between individual and team records.

After days of voting, “Warriors Bracketology” was narrowed down to the final four:

-The 73-win season — Most regular-season wins (2015-16)
-Klay Thompson’s 37-point quarter vs. the Sacramento Kings — Most points in a quarter (2014-15)
-16-1 in playoffs — Best postseason winning percentage (2016-17)
-Stephen Curry’s 402 3-pointers — Most 3-pointers in a season (2015-16)

In the finals, Golden State’s 73-9 season edged out Curry’s 402 makes from beyond the arc.

Via @warriors on Twitter:

Although the 2015-16 season did not result in a championship for Steve Kerr and company, The Warriors’ 73 wins provided a bevy of memorable moments.

After winning the scoring title with a barrage of long-distance shots, Curry was named Most Valuable Player for the second straight season. Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green were all named to the All-Star game in Toronto.

Golden State opened the season with 24 straight wins, the best start in NBA history. The final victory of their streak came in a double-overtime thriller against the Boston Celtics.

Another defining moment came in February when the Warriors traveled to Oklahoma City. With less than a second left in overtime, Curry drilled a game-winning heave from just inside half court. His now-famous “bang” shot was his 12th 3-pointer of the contest, breaking the record for most in a single game.

Despite some late-season fumble, the Warriors defeated the Memphis Grizzlies in the final game of the season to break the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls record for most regular-season wins.

Adding another award to their historic 73-win season, the 2015-16 Warriors are bracketology champions.

Report: NBA working to host H-O-R-S-E competition with ‘high-profile players’

With no games on the schedule, seeing Stephen Curry participate in a H-O-R-S-E competition might be the next best thing.

After three weeks of no basketball, the NBA is getting creative with finding ways to produce content during the shutdown. Taking part in interactive social media sessions with fans, along with watching games from the past have served as outlets for players with no games on the schedule.

To help fix basketball cravings, the league launched a nationally televised players-only NBA 2K Tournament. Another form of hoops could be coming soon that involves a classic basketball challenge.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, The NBA is working on bringing an edition of the game H-O-R-S-E to television that includes “several high-profile players.”

Via @wojespn on Twitter:

Players would use home gyms to compete in the classic playground basketball game, according to Wojnarowski.

Discussions have been ongoing among the NBA, NBPA and ESPN about a competition among several players in isolation — presumably using home gyms — that would include them competing shot for shot in the traditional playground game, sources said.

With the Warriors not having a current representative in the league’s 2K tournament, the H-O-R-S-E contest could be the chance to see a member from Golden State competing in a form of basketball.

While it may not be the same as live-game action, seeing Stephen Curry show off his supreme long-distance shooting in a game of H-O-R-S-E might be the next best thing.
