Bethesda promises hefty new Starfield updates every six weeks

Bethesda is working on some big Starfield updates ahead of the space game’s bigger DLC expansions, including new ways to travel

Bethesda is working on some big Starfield updates ahead of the space game’s bigger DLC expansions, including new ways to travel and, finally, add city maps. The news comes from a post Bethesda made on the Starfield Reddit, where the studio also promised mod support – a feature players have hoped for since Starfield launched in September 2023.

“We’re also hard at work on many of new features you asked for, from city maps, to mod support, to all new ways of traveling (stay tuned!),” Bethesda said. “These will be rolling out with a regular cadence of fixes and updates we expect to have roughly every six weeks. If something can be done in a smaller hotfix in between,, and we feel it’s safe, we’ll get one of those out as well. Safe is the key here. We do take a lot of time to test even the smallest change in a game this large and dynamic.”

A previous hotfix introduced an issue that caused an asteroid to follow players around, which is a problem, but not as big as the Starfield glitch that uprooted entire cities.

Meanwhile, Bethesda’s studio design director Emil Pagliarulo took to Twitter to complain about players who were dissatisfied with Starfield and said they don’t understand how game development works.

“I don’t complain about games on social for two main reasons: 1.) I know how hard it is to make games, and have too much respect for my fellow devs,” Pagliarulo said. “2.) I work for a game studio, and it would be uncool and unprofessional for me to do so. But sometimes I want to. Oh boy.”

“Part of me really gets it. When you’re a consumer and spend money on things, that gives you the right to complain about those things. I spend a LOT of money on games every year, and sometimes it takes a lot for me not to scream into the internet’s collective consciousness.”

The thread continues for another 13 posts.

Baldur’s Gate 3 classes ranked from futile to fabulous

Our Baldur’s Gate 3 class rank list lays out which classes give you the most tools to use in the popular RPG and which ones fall short.

[anyclip-media thumbnail=”undefined” playlistId=”undefined” content=”PHNjcmlwdCBzcmM9Imh0dHBzOi8vcGxheWVyLnBvcHRvay5jb20vYW55Y2xpcC13aWRnZXQvbHJlLXdpZGdldC9wcm9kL3YxL3NyYy9scmUuanMiIGRhdGEtYXI9IjE2OjkiIHB1Ym5hbWU9IjE5OTgiIHdpZGdldG5hbWU9IjAwMTZNMDAwMDJVMEIxa1FBRl9NODMzNSI+Cjwvc2NyaXB0Pg==”][/anyclip-media]

Making a Baldur’s Gate 3 classes rank list is a pretty sizeable ask, not because Larian’s hit PC game has too many to choose from – although things get a bit out of control if you take Baldur’s Gate 3’s subclasses into account – but because you can feasibly make any class work well. Your skill choice and the environment play a substantial part in how well a class functions. Even a powerful wizard falls short if you stack them with garbage magic, but the right combos and party compositions mean even a not-exactly-optimized Warlock can excel.

Some roles give you more to play with than others, though, and lend themselves to better combinations with your team members. Druids are great at running over people as a bear, for example, but Sorcerers can rain fire, ice, and lightning down on entire armies. There’s a clear winner here.

Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox is off to a rough start

Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox is going through a few rough patches and deleting people’s saves, and the problem is an odd one

[anyclip-media thumbnail=”undefined” playlistId=”undefined” content=”PHNjcmlwdCBzcmM9Imh0dHBzOi8vcGxheWVyLnBvcHRvay5jb20vYW55Y2xpcC13aWRnZXQvbHJlLXdpZGdldC9wcm9kL3YxL3NyYy9scmUuanMiIGRhdGEtYXI9IjE2OjkiIHB1Ym5hbWU9IjE5OTgiIHdpZGdldG5hbWU9IjAwMTZNMDAwMDJVMEIxa1FBRl9NODMzNSI+Cjwvc2NyaXB0Pg==”][/anyclip-media]

Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox is going through a few rough patches and deleting people’s saves, and the problem is an odd one. Shortly after Larian surprised launched BG3 on Xbox at The Game Awards 2023 – an announcement Geoff Keighley cut short, like he did every other acceptance speech – people started encountering game crashes.

That’s not entirely unusual. BG3’s PS5 launch was pretty rough as well, but several players started noticing their save files vanished when they rebooted the game. That’s definitely not usual. Larian posted a statement on Twitter acknowledging the situation and said Microsoft published an Xbox firmware update that should address the problem.

It didn’t. Microsoft support stepped in and said the Xbox team is working on a solution to the missing save files problem, and they have a temporary solution to, hopefully, hold you over until it’s permanently fixed.

“In order to avoid this issue players should save their game and then return to the Xbox dashboard and select ‘Quit Game’ or ‘Save to Quick Resume’ from the game menu (Home, Game, Select, and then choose ‘Save to Quick Resume’ or ‘Quit’) when they finish playing,” Xbox support said. “Users should not disconnect their console from the power. Users should select ‘shut down’ from the console menu and leave their Xbox connected to power.”

Baldur’s Gate 3 isn’t on Game Pass, so if you’ve thought about diving in on Xbox, you might want to hold off buying it until Larian and Microsoft sort the problem out.

Lightspeed is making an officially licensed NBA mobile game

Lightspeed, the studio behind PUBG Mobile and the upcoming Sentinels game shown at The Game Awards, is making an official NBA mobile game

[anyclip-media thumbnail=”undefined” playlistId=”undefined” content=”PHNjcmlwdCBzcmM9Imh0dHBzOi8vcGxheWVyLnBvcHRvay5jb20vYW55Y2xpcC13aWRnZXQvbHJlLXdpZGdldC9wcm9kL3YxL3NyYy9scmUuanMiIGRhdGEtYXI9IjE2OjkiIHB1Ym5hbWU9IjE5OTgiIHdpZGdldG5hbWU9IjAwMTZNMDAwMDJVMEIxa1FBRl9NODMzNSI+Cjwvc2NyaXB0Pg==”][/anyclip-media]

Lightspeed, the studio behind PUBG Mobile and the upcoming Sentinels game shown off at The Game Awards, and Level Infinite are making an officially licensed NBA mobile game, NBA Infinite. NBA Infinite is a free-to-play game that promises players, well, infinite ways to play, and while that stops short of offering a PvE mode, there’s plenty of other modes to choose from

You can dive into 3v3 matches, face off against other players in 1v1, create a lasting legacy in Dynasty mode, or go all out in 5v5 games. Not unlike NBA 2K, your goal in NBA Infinite is collecting your favorite players and leveling up their skills to build your dream team. NBA Infinite also tasks you with managing your coaches and carefully planning your offensive and defensive strategies on your way to the top.

“We’re committed to crafting an authentic NBA gaming experience that fuels fans’ love of the game,” Anthony Crouts, Level Infinite’s senior director, said in a press release. “NBA Infinite offers realistic visuals, intense real-time PvP matchups, and an ever-growing roster of fan-favorite players. We can’t wait for everyone to lace up their sneakers and hit the court.”

You can check out those realistic visuals in the trailer above.

NBA Infinite pre-registration is live now on Google Play and the Apple App Store, and Lightspeed and Level Infinite are promising several rewards for reaching pre-registration milestones. These include a chance to win autographed NBA merchandise and tickets to a regular season game in the 2024-2025 season, along with starter packs for in-game players and coaches.

The luck variable involved in gathering these packages is a bit of an obstacle, but once you find the right one, hang onto it as long as you can.

Court sides with Epic Games in Google Play monopoly case

The long court battle between Epic Games and Google Play is finally over, and Google came out worse for wear

[anyclip-media thumbnail=”undefined” playlistId=”undefined” content=”PHNjcmlwdCBzcmM9Imh0dHBzOi8vcGxheWVyLnBvcHRvay5jb20vYW55Y2xpcC13aWRnZXQvbHJlLXdpZGdldC9wcm9kL3YxL3NyYy9scmUuanMiIGRhdGEtYXI9IjE2OjkiIHB1Ym5hbWU9IjE5OTgiIHdpZGdldG5hbWU9IjAwMTZNMDAwMDJVMEIxa1FBRl9NODMzNSI+Cjwvc2NyaXB0Pg==”][/anyclip-media]

The long court battle between Epic Games and Google Play is finally over, and Google came out worse for wear. The jury verdict comes three years after Epic filed a suit accusing Google of operating an illegal monopoly with the Google Play store on mobile devices and, specifically, Google Play Billing (thanks, The Verge).

The jury answered yes to each allegation, stating Google has monopoly power in Android app distribution and in-app billing and that its position and anticompetitive actions harmed Epic Games. Epic wasn’t the only one harmed either. During the trial, evidence emerged of secret revenue sharing deals between Google and large corporations such as Netflix and Spotify, where Google didn’t impose Play Billing terms on certain entities – the same terms every other publisher had to abide by.

“We plan to challenge the verdict,” Google VP of government affairs and public policy said in a statement. “Android and Google Play provide more choice and openness than any other major mobile platform. The trial made clear that we compete fiercely with Apple and its App Store, as well as app stores on Android devices and gaming consoles. We will continue to defend the Android business model and remain deeply committed to our users, partners, and the broader Android ecosystem.”

The judge hearing Epic v. Google hasn’t ordered any remediation from Google yet, and it’s unclear what actions they might require Google to take. Epic is aiming for freedom for developers and publishers to implement their own in-app stores on Android devices, though remediation discussions won’t begin until January 2024. While Epic and CEO Tim Sweeney will not seek payment for damages, Sweeny did say during the hearing that Epic stands to make “billions” of dollars by not having to pay Google for Play Billing.

Sweeney also laid off nearly 1,000 Epic employees just weeks before, citing difficult economic headwinds and company mismanagement as the cause.

Eiji Aonuma says it’s game over for linear Zelda games

If you’re hoping the next Zelda game is a return to the old days of eight dungeons and a linear path, well, you probably shouldn’t

[anyclip-media thumbnail=”undefined” playlistId=”undefined” content=”PHNjcmlwdCBzcmM9Imh0dHBzOi8vcGxheWVyLnBvcHRvay5jb20vYW55Y2xpcC13aWRnZXQvbHJlLXdpZGdldC9wcm9kL3YxL3NyYy9scmUuanMiIGRhdGEtYXI9IjE2OjkiIHB1Ym5hbWU9IjE5OTgiIHdpZGdldG5hbWU9IjAwMTZNMDAwMDJVMEIxa1FBRl9NODMzNSI+Cjwvc2NyaXB0Pg==”][/anyclip-media]

If you’re hoping the next Zelda game is a return to the old days of eight dungeons and a linear path through them, well, you probably shouldn’t. IGN spoke with series producer Eiji Aonuma during The Game Awards 2023, after Tears of the Kingdom won best action game, and he suggested there’s an element of “the grass is greener” when people look back fondly on older Zelda games.

“I do think we as people have a tendency to want the thing that we don’t currently have, and there’s a bit of a grass is greener mentality,” Aonuma said. “But I also think that with the freedom players have in the more recent games in the series…there still is a set path, it just happens to be the path that they chose. So I think that that is one thing I kind of like to remind myself about the current games that we’re making.”

“But also, it’s interesting when I hear people say those things because I am wondering, “Why do you want to go back to a type of game where you’re more limited or more restricted in the types of things or ways you can play?” But I do understand that desire that we have for nostalgia, and so I can also understand it from that aspect.”

Which doesn’t sound too promising for fans of traditional Zelda style. Aonuma said his goal is creating more ways for players to chart their own path, so it seems pretty likely the next Zelda – whatever it might be – will follow the same open-world style as Tears of the Kingdom.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though. Aonuma and his team grew quite a bit between Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, as the sequel’s open world felt more alive, with new people, more secrets, and a more complex series of dungeons that took advantage of the open-world, non-linear design in ways that Breath of the Wild couldn’t.

The ESA is ending E3 – for good this time

The ESA announced that E3 is dead, again, but it seems like the annual video games showcase might actually be gone for good this time

[anyclip-media thumbnail=”undefined” playlistId=”undefined” content=”PHNjcmlwdCBzcmM9Imh0dHBzOi8vcGxheWVyLnBvcHRvay5jb20vYW55Y2xpcC13aWRnZXQvbHJlLXdpZGdldC9wcm9kL3YxL3NyYy9scmUuanMiIGRhdGEtYXI9IjE2OjkiIHB1Ym5hbWU9IjE5OTgiIHdpZGdldG5hbWU9IjAwMTZNMDAwMDJVMEIxa1FBRl9NODMzNSI+Cjwvc2NyaXB0Pg==”][/anyclip-media]

The ESA announced that E3 is dead, again, but it seems like the annual video games showcase might actually be gone for good this time. The news comes after ReedPop, an events company the ESA partnered with to make E3 happen, dropped the showcase and ended the partnership without offering a statement as to why.

The ESA posted a brief, rather abrupt message on Twitter and the event website

“After more than two decades of E3, each one bigger than the last, the time has come to say goodbye,” the statement reads. “Thanks for the memories.”

That was it. While the ESA didn’t elaborate on the reasons behind the decision, the convention’s decline comes as little surprise. Publishers such as Nintendo began hosting their own showcases to communicate directly with audiences outside of E3, a move that others, including PlayStation and Xbox, adopted during COVID-19 lockdowns when in-person conventions were impossible to hold.

The ESA tried reviving the showcase with a digital event, with middling success. Not only did it fail to reach the same heights, but major publishers such as Sega chose Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest to air their announcements, leaving digital E3 with a mismatched assortment of reveals. The organization planned for another in-person showcase in 2023, but after Ubisoft and others backed out to host their own events, that, too, ended up falling by the wayside.

Whether this is truly the end or just another extended postponement remains to be seen, but even if the ESA manages to find another partner to host E3 with, it seems like the broader industry has already moved on.
