Ben Simmons, Tobias Harris impressed with Glenn Robinson III in debut

Philadelphia 76ers veterans Ben Simmons and Tobias Harris are impressed with what Glenn Robinson III brings to the floor.

The Philadelphia 76ers got some much-needed reinforcements on Sunday when they welcomed in Glenn Robinson III and Alec Burks after a trade on Thursday morning. Both players are expected to provide a spark to this team in the shooting and bench scoring department that is sorely needed on this team.

While Burks did not play on Sunday, Robinson III did and he played well scoring 10 points on 5-for-6 shooting in 12 minutes of action in a win. His play caught the eye of his teammates as they were impressed with how he quickly fit in.

“He’s a hard worker defensively and offensively,” said Ben Simmons. “He’s very explosive, a great slasher, I know he’s got a good midrange too so I love his game so far.”

Tobias Harris, who has morphed into one of the leaders on this team, will now finally have somebody reliable behind him who can come in and provide some good minutes. He was happy with what Robinson being able to make reads and cut to the basket despite it being the first time he’s played with the team.

“His energy, you can see where he’s been in a system where they play off each other,” he said. “A lot of his cuts were second nature for him where he was able to find the basketball. He’s a dynamic player, a great skill set to our team, he’s able to shoot the ball, and create off the bounce too. I think he’s going to be a great part of our team going forward.”

The Sixers will feature both Robinson III and Burks more in the rotation on Tuesday when the team hosts the Los Angeles Clippers. [lawrence-related id=25496,25477,25445]

Glenn Robinson III, Alec Burks will be in Sixers rotation vs. Clippers

The Philadelphia 76ers will include Alec Burks and Glenn Robinson III in the rotation against the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Philadelphia 76ers got a taste of Glenn Robinson III in Sunday’s win over the Chicago Bulls, but now they want to see what Alec Burks can do.

After not playing on Sunday against the Bulls due to just getting in on a red-eye and he and the team agreeing that they should not play him due to being cautious, the Sixers are ready to throw him into the fire.

“Oh yeah, he will play,” said coach Brett Brown on Monday at practice. “I will play him against the Clippers and I will play Glenn against the Clippers. Those two will be in the rotation. They will be in the game tomorrow.”

Now, does that change what Brown wants to do? There was a report that he and general manager Elton Brand had discusses making a change to the starting lineup and maybe play a little more small ball, especially against a versatile Los Angeles Clippers team, but Brown does not see it that way.

“It’s an unlikely sort of group that you have to match up with,” explained Brown. “How we do that, how we start the game, how we match up, we’ll discuss more tomorrow. There is a lot of mobile wings more than a lot of top-heavy bigs.”

Brett Brown, Sixers have big rotation decisions to make with new pieces

Philadelphia 76ers coach Brett Brown has to decide on who’s going to play after the acquisitions of Glenn Robinson III and Alec Burks.

The Philadelphia 76ers have championship visions dancing in their heads. That’s why they made the moves they made in the offseason by bringing in Al Horford and Josh Richardson to join their talented group.

Yet, something was missing. They needed some shooting and scoring off the bench to support a very talented starting lineup and they feel like they made the moves necessary to fill that void with the acquisitions of Glenn Robinson III and Alec Burks.

Those two talented wings join a bench group that’s led by an emerging Furkan Korkmaz and impressive rookie Matisse Thybulle to provide depth behind Tobias Harris. That means coach Brett Brown has to decide on who plays and who doesn’t.

“We all can agree to is there’s a stable of wings and something’s got to give,” said Brown. “There’s only so many minutes. Because the group is flexible, you have options and for me to have the group that we have, this is our team and then to be able to look at it and take a deep dive over All-Star break where you can figure out how are you going to play this? How are you going to best use the team is on my mind.”

So how does Brown best decide on who’s going to play and who doesn’t? That will be up to the players to earn their spot in the rotation.

“We’re going to watch this thing play out,” he explained. “There’s a competitive environment that I say to them, the gym kind of tells me most times. That’s how I intend to let this play out.”

The options include Korkmaz who continues to impress and grow into a bomber that Brown wants off his bench. He is now shooting 39.8% from deep and is shooting a sizzling 13-for-20 from deep in the previous two games combined.

Then, there’s Thybulle who makes such an impact for this team on both ends of the floor. While his 3-point stroke continues to be a work in progress, his defense is already towards the top of the league and he is coming into his own every day.

Then Burks and Robinson will factor in somehow as they both give this team what they need. They need guys who can shoot, they both shoot better than 37.5% from deep, and they both can get after it on the defensive end. Burks can also get to the foul line which certainly helps this team.

“It’s not clear, is it?” asked a smiling Brown. “I think that’s a good thing. I think the options that you have are a good thing. I think you can go to other things, J-Rich, Matisse, Glenn Robinson, like you can go to different things. Is it going to be the answer? I don’t know. I think those are the things that are on my mind on how to play it as thing unfolds.”

At some point, however, Brown is going to have to settle on a rotation. Once the playoffs roll around, he has to have a settled rotation and he has to know who he is going to play on a consistent and regular basis. That’s what this final stretch of the season should tell him as he works his team into form.

“I think where it gets complicated is at some point it needs to be settled,” he added. “A settled environment. It needs to be a earned, settled, environment. Like this thing, you wished it could be January 1 and here we are, but it isn’t and that’s the nature of the trade deadline. That’s my job to figure that out.”

He has 28 games to figure all of that out before the playoffs begin in April. [lawrence-related id=25401,25393,25383]

Glenn Robinson III discusses differences since last stint with Sixers

New Philadelphia 76ers forward Glenn Robinson III discusses the difference in his new stint with the Sixers.

When Glenn Robinson III walked into the Wells Fargo Center on Sunday to make his return debut against the Chicago Bulls, things were a little different than the last time he donned a Sixers uniform.

He last played with Philadelphia in the 2014-15 season as a rookie and he was playing for a very bad Sixers team that was going through the infamous “process”. He is now playing for a legitimate championship contender with a lot more talent and his role is to provide shooting and scoring to a team in desperate need of it.

“The players definitely got better,” he said with a laugh. “But, it’s always weird. Like I said, a new day at a job, that first step, it’s always different, but I felt the energy in the building. It’s great to be back; a lot of fans, a lot of everyone coming to me with open arms and I’m glad that I’m back here in Philly. I really feel like I could help this team and I’m just glad to be wanted.”

The Sixers definitely wanted him. They gave up three future draft picks in order to bring him and Alec Burks in from the Golden State Warriors. All of those good feelings are things that are going to help the transition for him and playing for coach Brett Brown again has its advantages as well.

“I think that’s the main thing as a player, coming to different situations, whether it’s a trade or getting picked up in free agency. Being wanted is a great feeling.,” he explained. “For Brett to FaceTime me almost immediately after finding out the news, I think that that says a lot about his character, my character and what they want here.”

Robinson has made huge strides since his last time in Philadelphia. He has developed a reputation as a two-way player and his jumper and perimeter defense has improved. After the Sixers, he joined the Indiana Pacers and he made strides forward as a shooter and he learned the game in order to improve as a player.

That will give the Sixers exactly what they need in order to make an impact.

“The game’s slowed down a lot,” he explained. “It slows down every year that you’re in the league and just becoming a better defender and a better shooter. When I left here, I had to guard Paul George every day in practice and compete for a spot on every team I’ve been on. So I feel like my confidence and just being an overall better basketball player, my IQ of the game has gotten a lot better, it’s just slowed down. It’s as simple as that.”

Brown only had Robinson for 10 games as a rookie, but he noticed something with him the last time he had him that would allow him to stay in the league for a long time.

“I felt that he had the pedigree like he had the DNA to make you pay attention,” explained Brown. “The more you paid attention, the more you felt like ‘He has a real chance’ like he did some things that were unique. As you step back and watch him grow, he can shoot and he can defend.”

Robinson III had the tough task of defending the opposition’s best players while with the Warriors. He would constantly go at guys like James Harden, Devin Booker, Kawhi Leonard, Brandon Ingram, and others that would make life hard on any better and he held his own.

He forced Booker into five turnovers in two matchups with him, for example, and that type of effort will help the team going forward.

“Look at the assignments he was given on that Golden State team,” Brown continued. “He had to go guard the other team’s best player. The fact that he can guard and he can make a shot really helps like it’s a pretty positive two-way player that you get into the program in February.”

Robinson III is especially excited to see the team’s new practice facility after practicing at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine the last time he was here.

“I haven’t seen the new practice facility,” he said with a smile. “I’m excited to do that too because we were at PCOM last time when I was here. It’s a big difference, I’ve heard.”

Things are going to be much different this time around. [lawrence-related id=25401,25393,25375]

Brett Brown explains why Glenn Robinson III played, Alec Burks didn’t

Philadelphia 76ers coach Brett Brown explains why Glenn Robinson III played and Alec Burks did not against the Chicago Bulls.

The Philadelphia 76ers are obviously still a work in progress as the season continues to wear on and they just added two more wing pieces to the group in Glenn Robinson III and Alec Burks after a trade with the Golden State Warriors.

The two were in uniform in Sunday’s 118-111 win over the Chicago Bulls, but only one of them played and that was Glenn Robinson III who played 12 minutes and scored 10 points. It was curious as to why one played and not the other, but coach Brett Brown had a simple explanation.

“Direction really from the front office just trying to get things right with Al (Burks),” said Brown. “It’s just really nothing. Just really giving him a little bit of daylight as he tries to come into the program. Glenn was different, so I played him.”

The difference is that Robinson III has experience playing for Brown as a rookie in the 2014-15 season so he knows what to expect in the offense. It’s easier to allow Robinson the playing time and let him get acclimated to the team rather than throwing Burks out there where everything is brand new for him.

Glenn Robinson III, Sixers react to return debut in win over Bulls

The Philadelphia 76ers react to Glenn Robinson III’s debut in a win over the Chicago Bulls.

The Philadelphia 76ers brought in reinforcements over the trade deadline with the acquisitions of Glenn Robinson III and Alec Burks. for Robinson III, this wasn’t necessarily a debut, but a return for him.

The Sixers were not the first team he played for, but he did play in Philadelphia as a rookie in the 2014-15 season after he was acquired from the Minnesota Timberwolves. So when he stepped on to the floor, it almost felt at home for him as he scored 10 points on 5-for-6 shooting in 12 minutes in a 118-111 win over the Chicago Bulls.

Robinson III said there was no message from coach Brett Brown pregame as he was already familiar with the schemes.

“We talked before I got here, but we really didn’t get too much time,” he explained. “I’ll catch up with him tomorrow at practice, but really playing hard and don’t worry about the plays or little things. Just go out there and play hard and try to bring some energy.”

Brown had some praise for his new piece after the win as well.

“He’s got a bounce,” he said. “I coached Glenn my second year in Philadelphia for a minute, but we had a taste of him and he was good people and I’ve seen his growth continue, making shots, guarding the other team’s best players. To see him come in here and score and play and have a feel of where to slash, he had a lot of smart slashes where we got stuck a bit with dribble penetration and he bailed us out finding open space at the rim. I’m excited to have him in the program and we know that he’s good people.”

To the Sixers’ credit, the guys were on the floor helping him through everything. It’s also easy to play off of guys like Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid, and Josh Richardson and be able to get easy baskets off of that.

“I think it’s always a little different coming in on the first day, let alone have a game,” he said. “The teammates did a great job of filling me in and catching me up on the plays and I really just played off of them. I was able to cut and we have a lot of guys on this team that draw a lot of attention so being able to cut and read off of them is important.”

Furkan Korkmaz, who will be one of the wings that Robinson III will be battling for minutes with, is excited to have him in the fold.

“For the first game, it was impressive,” said Korkmaz. “I know Glenn was tired from traveling and trade stuff, it’s hard to come in and make an impact on the game in crucial moments. We also said welcome with the win. I think as a team we will show more friendship, more friendly basketball on the court. We will take our backs more when we keep winning like this.”

For Robinson III, this is only the beginning for him as he continues to carve out a role on this team going forward. [lawrence-related id=25375,25366,25344]

Glenn Robinson III excited to be back, finally play with Joel Embiid

Glenn Robinson III returns to the Philadelphia 76ers excited to finally play with Joel Embiid.

For Glenn Robinson III, this is a new chapter in his life. He is returning to the Philadelphia 76ers after being on the team in his rookie season in the 2014-15 season.

At the time, the Sixers were one of the worst teams in the league as they were going through “The Process”, but now he’s ready to help a championship team in his return to Philly. He was having a terrific season with the Golden State Warriors shooting 40% from deep with the team.

“I was excited,” he said. “Obviously, I was having a great year with the Warriors and things were going great there, they’re a great organization, but I think that I was definitely excited to be able to help this team.”

There is one difference that stands out in his mind when returning and that is to finally play with Joel Embiid. The big man was dealing with foot injuries his first two seasons in the league and he was not able to play while Robinson was with the team in his first go around.

“When I was here my rookie year, JoJo was still hurt coming back from injury,” he continued. “We would just play 3-on-3 every day and that’s when I knew he was going to be a great player before the league really got a chance to see him on an NBA court. So I’m really looking forward to getting back out there with him.”

Robinson III will make his Sixers debut on Sunday when the Sixers take on the Chicago Bulls at 6:00 p.m. EST and he will finally be able to play with Embiid on an NBA court. [lawrence-related id=25322,25312,25302]

Sixers to have Glenn Robinson III, Alec Burks available vs. Bulls

The Philadelphia 76ers will have both Glenn Robinson III and Alec Burks available on Sunday against the Chicago Bulls.

The Philadelphia 76ers will finally have their new pieces on the floor on Sunday night when they take on the Chicago Bulls.

After a few days of figuring out when they would be available, both Glenn Robinson III and Alec Burks will be suited up and play for the Sixers on Sunday. They were both originally listed as out in this one.

The one big thing that fans should realize is that both players have not practiced yet and they are trying to get acclimated to a new system and a new team. So their minutes probably will not be where fans are expecting to begin.

What they can expect is that these two players are going to come in here and provide some shooting and scoring. Both players shoot above 37.5% from deep and that is exactly what the Sixers have needed on their end.

The Sixers will look to continue their home dominance on Sunday where they own the best home record in the league. They are currently 23-2 at home with two games left before the All-Star break. [lawrence-related id=25322,25312,25292]

Prediction

76ers 118, Bulls 101

Moneyline (ML)

The 76ers (-834) are overwhelming favorites, and you’ll need to risk eight times your investment. That’s not good betting, and the Bulls (+550) are too banged up and cannot be trusted. AVOID.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The 76ERS (-11.5, -106) are awaiting Glenn Robinson III and Alec Burks, acquired at the deadline. Even if they’re not ready Sunday the Sixers should have enough against a Bulls team which is ravaged by injury. The Bulls are 0-4 ATS in their past four trips to Philly, and 1-4 ATS in the previous five meetings overall in this series. Chicago is also 0-5 ATS in their past five, and 1-8-1 ATS in the past 10 against winning sides.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 213.5 (-110) is the play, although it’s hard to imagine where the offense is going to come from on the Bulls. Still, the 76ers should have their way offensively and they’ll likely encounter very little resistance.

Updating Sixers new 2020 draft situation following trade deadline

The Philadelphia 76ers have a bright draft situation ahead of the 2020 NBA Draft following the trade deadline.

The Philadelphia 76ers have their eyes set on a much bigger and shiner prize as the season continues on, but it does not hurt to also think about the future a little bit.

The Sixers may have come away as the real winners after acquiring Alec Burks and Glenn Robinson III from the Golden State Warriors. While they had to give away a second-round pick, they were able to keep some other draft assets as well as possibly be adding a first-round pick to work with.

Our sister site, Rookie Wire, took an in-depth look at what the Sixers have to work with in the upcoming June draft.

Bryan Kalbrosky writes:

Even though the Philadelphia 76ers sent away a second-round pick in 2020 (as well as two more future second-rounders) to the Warriors, they still have three high second-round picks to use in the upcoming draft to go along with a first-rounder originally from the Oklahoma City Thunder. This deadline may be considered a win for Philly considering that they were able to hold on to their earlier second-rounders while also upgrading their depth off the bench.

That pick was mentioned is top 20 protected and right now it is slotted at 21 which would then convey to the Sixers. If Oklahoma City, who is the 6 seed in the West at the moment, can continue to win, then that pick would go to Philadelphia and they would have another option to roll in the upcoming draft.

When one combines all of that with the fact that Burks and Robinson III can help the Sixers chase their championship on the floor, then this was another solid trade deadline for general manager Elton Brand his staff. [lawrence-related id=25302,25292,25269]
