Five reasons Texas beats Georgia

There are many reasons Texas will beat UGA football to remain No. 1 and undefeated

The No. 4 Georgia Bulldogs play the No. 1 Texas Longhorns is Austin, Texas, on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. The winner of the Georgia-Texas game will have an inside track to reach the 2024 SEC championship game.

Georgia enters the Texas game as slight underdogs. The Bulldogs have looked much more inconsistent compared to Texas. Yes, Georgia has played a challenging schedule, but Georgia simply has not been as dominant as Texas.

Here’s why Texas will defeat Georgia football

Turnovers

Texas has a turnover margin of plus-3. The Longhorns have forced 11 turnovers this season and have eight giveaways.

Georgia has a turnover margin of minus-1. Georgia has only forced five turnovers this season. UGA quarterback Carson Beck has all six of Georgia’s turnovers this year, but two were not necessarily his fault. We think Georgia, which had four turnovers in its last road game, loses the turnover battle again in this one.

Texas has a better offensive line

“The better offensive line in this game is Texas,” said college football expert Joel Klatt. “They’re more experienced, they’re healthier and I just think that they’re better overall.”

Georgia is missing offensive guard Tate Ratledge, but the Bulldogs have struggled to run the ball at times this season. In fact, Texas rushes for 55 more yards per game than Georgia (189 to 134 rushing yards per game).

Texas’ offensive line has allowed six sacks this season, which is second-best in the SEC. The Longhorns have a number of NFL prospects on their offensive line including tackles Kelvin Banks Jr. and Cameron Williams.

Texas has the third-most sacks (tied) in the SEC with 19 through six weeks. The Longhorns have the best scoring defense in the country thanks in large part due to their ability to disrupt opposing quarterbacks. Linebackers Anthony Hill and Collin Simmons both have four or more sacks for Texas.

Georgia has 11 sacks this season, which is second-to-last in the SEC. The Bulldogs have elite pass rushers Jalon Walker and Mykel Williams, but they have just 1 1/2 sacks combined this year.

Texas’ defense proves itself again

Mikala Compton/American-Statesman

The Texas Longhorns have the top defense in the country per a number of different metrics. Texas has the No. 1 scoring defense and allows an average of 6.3 points per game. The Longhorns have allowed the fewest passing touchdowns (one) and yards (756) of any team in the country.

Texas also has the second-best red zone defense in the country. Texas has allowed only seven red zone trips all season and just one red zone touchdown. Texas has a challenge against Georgia’s high-powered offense, but the Longhorns will show they are capable of rising to the occasion.

Quinn Ewers, Isaiah Bond are too much for UGA’s secondary

Tim Warner/Getty Images

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers and wide receiver Isaiah Bond, an Alabama transfer, are projected to be a first-round picks in the 2025 NFL draft. Bond burned Georgia in the 2024 SEC championship, and we think he does it again on Saturday.

Ewers is primed to shred a Georgia secondary that gave up massive plays, 31 points and a lot of yardage to a Mississippi State team that has only won one game all season. Look for Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian to put Ewers in numerous favorable situations. The Georgia defense will be confused at times due to Sarkisian’s motions.

Georgia football drops in recruiting rankings after 5-star QB decommits

Georgia sinks in recruiting rankings after five-star quarterback prospect Jared Curtis decommitted from UGA football

The Georgia Bulldogs have dropped significantly in the class of 2026 recruiting rankings after five-star quarterback Jared Curtis decommitted from the Bulldogs. Georgia now has the No. 20 recruiting class in the country following Curtis’ decommitment.

Of course, Georgia and head coach Kirby Smart have a long way to go in the class of 2026 recruiting cycle. Georgia is primarily focused on the class of 2025, which is the current senior class. However, it never hurts to get off to a strong start with the junior class.

Curtis’ decommitment still stings for Georgia. The Dawgs have just two remaining commitments in the 2026 cycle. Curtis is the No. 1 quarterback and the No. 6 overall recruit in the country, per 247Sports.

[lawrence-auto-related count=2]

Curtis was a potential long term replacement for Carson Beck. Now, Georgia will need to either utilize the transfer portal or someone on the roster to replace Beck. Georgia’s top options include Gunner Stockton, Jaden Rashada, and freshman Ryan Puglisi. The Bulldogs also have a commitment for class of 2025 quarterback Ryan Montgomery, who is out for his senior season due to injury.

Predicting the Mississippi State vs. Georgia with ESPN’s SP+ model

ESPN predicts the winner, score of Georgia football versus Mississippi State

For people that trust technology more than people when it comes to making predictions, this is for you: SP+, a statistical model made by ESPN (subscription required) predicted almost every detail of the game between the Mississippi State Bulldogs vs. the Georgia Bulldogs.

SP+ is a model created by ESPN analyst Bill Connelly to predict the outcome of college football games. “SP+ is intended to be predictive and forward-facing,” according to Connelly. “It is not a résumé ranking that gives credit for big wins or particularly brave scheduling — no good predictive system is.”

“It is simply a measure of the most sustainable and predictable aspects of football. If you’re lucky or unimpressive in a win, your rating will probably fall. If you’re strong and unlucky in a loss, it will probably rise.”

The model has predicted the Georgia will win 43-13 at home vs. Mississippi State. This means that, despite the blowout, Georgia won’t cover the spread of -33.5. Regardless of the score, the model has predicted Georgia has a 97% chance of winning. There are several reasons that Mississippi State could cover against Georgia, and the AI model supports that thinking.

Georgia transfer LB is Arkansas’ leading tackler

Georgia football transfer linebacker leads the Arkansas Razorbacks in tackles through six games

Former Georgia Bulldogs linebacker Xavian Sorey has made an immediate impact with the Arkansas Razorbacks this season. Sorey, who had 24 tackles and one sack in three seasons at Georgia, has already bested those numbers through six games with Arkansas.

Sorey has 40 total tackles and a sack this season with the Razorbacks. Sorey leads Arkansas in tackles and is a big reason why the Razorbacks are off to a strong start the season.

Sorey’s top performance came in Week 2 against Oklahoma State when recorded 13 total tackles. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound linebacker also put up eight tackles in Arkansas’ stunning upset of Tennessee in Week 6.

Arkansas is 4-2 this season including 2-1 in SEC action. Former Georgia offensive line coach Sam Pittman and the Razorbacks are fourth in the SEC football standings entering bye week. Arkansas’ next game is at home on Oct. 19 against the LSU Tigers.

Sorey made an impressive tackle for a loss in Week 1 against Oklahoma State.

Arkansas is a feel good story in the SEC through Week 6. The Razorbacks will look to continue their bounce back year against LSU.

4-star DL, brother of UGA TE projected to commit to Georgia

Georgia football is expected to land a commitment from four-star Norcross defensive line recruit, who is the brother of a UGA tight end

Four-star defensive line recruit Carter Luckie is projected to commit to the Georgia Bulldogs football program according to Steve Wiltfong of On3. Luckie is the brother of Georgia tight end Lawson Luckie.

Carter Luckie is a member of the class of 2026. He plays high school football for Norcross High School in Norcross, Georgia. The 6-foot-5, 265-pound defensive lineman is ranked as the No. 233 recruit in the country, per 247Sports. Luckie is the No. 24 recruit in Georgia and the No. 26 defensive lineman in the nation.

Head coach Kirby Smart and Georgia have three commitments from recruits in the class of 2026. Georgia has the No. 8 recruiting class in the 2026 cycle. The Bulldogs are still looking for their first commitment from a player in the trenches in the class of 2026 and Luckie would be good foundation for the Dawgs.

Georgia is also favored to land a commitment from four-star running back Ousmane Kromah, who is announcing his college decision on Saturday.

Georgia plummets in Rece Davis’ college football rankings

ESPN “College GameDay” host Rece Davis published his college top 10 rankings the with Georgia Bulldogs sliding.

ESPN’s “College GameDay” analyst Rece Davis released his top 10 rankings ahead of Week 6 of the college season. He has a vote for the Associated Press and agreed with the media consensus for his top team this week. He ranks the Alabama Crimson Tide in the No. 1 spot. Davis had been lower than most on Alabama entering their Week 5

The Georgia Bulldogs drop to No. 5 in his rankings after dropping a 41-34 heavyweight bout against the Crimson Tide. The matchup is one of several high-profile matchups on Georgia’s schedule. They’ll be playing the No. 2 Texas Longhorns on Oct. 19, the No. 11 Ole Miss Rebels on Nov. 9, and the No. 4 Tennessee Volunteers on Nov. 16.

This upcoming week features some high profile matchups that can shift the rankings. The No. 10 Missouri Tigers will be heading against the Texas A&M Aggies, who seem to have recovered after an ugly loss to the No. 17 Notre Dame Fighting Irish in Week 1.

There’s also the No. 7 Miami Hurricanes heading on the road against the California Golden Bears, a game that Davis and the rest of the “College GameDay” staff will attend. The Hurricanes barely squeezed by the Virginia Tech Hokies in their first game of ACC play, so this matchup could be a coin flip.

Davis has Clemson ranked five spots higher than the AP poll. After the ugly Week 1 loss to Georgia, the No. 9 Tigers have scored over 40 points in every game since. They’ll be hitting the road to play the Florida State Seminoles on Saturday.

Bills poach rookie defensive lineman off Falcons’ practice squad

Falcons’ sixth-round pick poached off practice squad by the Buffalo Bills..

The Atlanta Falcons have gotten limited production from their rookie draft class this season and now one of their picks has been poached by another team. According to a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Buffalo Bills have signed defensive lineman Zion Logue off the Falcons’ practice squad.

Logue was selected with the last of Atlanta’s three sixth-round picks in the 2024 NFL draft. The former Georgia defensive tackle was the only Falcons rookie not to make the team’s initial 53-man roster out of training camp.

The Falcons have yet to dress their two other rookie defensive lineman this season. Second-round pick Ruke Orhorhoro and fourth-rounder Brandon Dorlus have been healthy scratches in the first four games.

Atlanta reportedly signed linebacker Rashaan Evans to the practice squad on Monday and now we know why there was no corresponding move. Evans will help fill in for linebacker Troy Andersen, who injured his knee in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s win over the Saints and did not return.

The former first-round pick signed with the Falcons as a free agent in 2022 and started all 17 games that season. Evans led the team with 159 tackles (86 solo), adding two sacks and two fumble recoveries. Despite his productive year, the Falcons did not bring back Evans in 2023.

On3 projects Notre Dame as 11th seed in College Football Playoff

How encouraged are you by this?

Notre Dame has played only five games so far, and the way the season has played out has complicated its College Football Playoff prospects. That loss to Northern Illinois will hang over the team as long as it remains in contention. But the important thing is the Irish do remain in contention.

On3 is among those outlets that has the Irish in the playoff. In this projection, the Irish are the 11th seed, visiting Georgia in the first round. Ari Wasserman, who built the projection, explains why the Irish are among the last four major teams in:

“The loss to Northern Illinois is still fresh on everybody’s mind because that was such a shocking loss, but Notre Dame took care of business against Louisville on Saturday. Remember, many thought Louisville would be one of the toughest tests on the Irish’s schedule. Notre Dame has to travel to USC in its season-finale, but it’ll likely be favored for the rest of its games leading into that trip to Los Angeles on Nov. 30. Notre Dame’s schedule is really manageable.”

We’ll find out how much this hold up or if it even improves as the season goes on. For now though, the Irish are in with at lest one projection.
