Mario Cristobal had the most baffling answer for why Miami didn’t kneel at the end of its stunning loss to Georgia Tech

Mario Cristobal, just say you made a mistake.

The Miami Hurricanes woke up Sunday morning with a 4-1 record, which is a shame because they should still be undefeated after Saturday’s home game against Georgia Tech.

The reason they aren’t lies right at the feet of head coach Mario Cristobal, who had his team run the ball with 33 seconds left in the game rather than kneel out those final seconds on the clock. Miami fumbled the ball away on that run, and Georgia Tech used those final seconds to score the game-winning touchdown. A complete disaster.

So, why didn’t Miami simply take a knee? Cristobal didn’t have a great reason after the game.

“The drive started, it was going to be at 1:57 and we ran about 1:27 off. And then it was recalibrated. We should’ve taken a timeout right there at the end. Thought we’d get the first down, and we talked about two hands on the ball. But that’s not good enough. Just should’ve told him to take knee. That’s it. Fumbled the ball at the 25, and they went 75 yards in two plays. So no excuse.”

I’m not even sure what Cristobal is trying to convey there. What was recalibrated, the play clock? And is he saying he should’ve taken a timeout in that moment to discuss whether to kneel or not? Was it really that hard of a decision?

Also, why was gaining the first down in a game that was effectively over so important? It wasn’t even fourth down yet. Cristobal was reminded of that important detail after his long-winded answer and finally just submitted, “We should’ve taken a knee.”

Yeah, ya think.

College football world roasted Mario Cristobal for Miami’s disastrous loss to Georgia Tech

WHAT… WHY?! THE GAME WAS OVER.

WHAT DID MIAMI JUST DO?

When you think you’ve seen it all in college football, the sport delivers again with one of the wildest, most unbelievable game endings ever thanks to head coach Mario Cristobal and the No. 17 Miami Hurricanes.

Miami had a 20-17 lead at the end of the fourth quarter, and all the Hurricanes had to do was take a knee to end it. The game was over. There were 33 seconds left. Just take a knee.

But no, Cristobal and the Hurricanes opted to run the ball instead, and not only did they fumble on an unnecessary play, but they also then gave up the game-winning touchdown.

Georgia Tech quarterback Haynes King first found Malik Rutherford for a 30-yard gain and then connected with an open Christian Leary for a 44-yard touchdown and ultimately a 23-20 Yellow Jackets victory. It was Leary’s only reception of the day.

Simply unbelievable. This has to be one of the worst gaffes in college football history, but this also has to be one of the best calls ever.

Regardless of what Cristobal was thinking in that moment, the college football world absolutely roasted him.

Georgia Tech’s highest-ranked commit decommits

Georgia Tech’s highest-ranked commitment in the class of 2024 has decommitted from the Yellow Jackets

Georgia Tech’s highest-ranked commit in the class of 2024, Christopher “CJ” Jackson, has decommitted from the Yellow Jackets.

Jackson, a member of the class of 2024, is the No. 64 recruit in his recruiting cycle. Jackson is the No. 7 edge rusher in the country and the No. 10 recruit in Georgia, per On3.

Jackson is a pass rusher for Tucker High School in Tucker, Georgia. Tucker is located near Atlanta, Georgia.

The four-star edge rusher has received an invitation to the 2024 Under Armour All-America Game.

Kirby Smart and Georgia football could be a school to watch for Jackson. Jackson decommitted from Georgia Tech shortly after the Yellow Jackets lost to Bowling Green.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound pass rusher shows good speed, quickness at the snap and good effort in pursuit. Jackson frequently beats opposing offensive tackles to the inside and takes the quickest path to the quarterback on stunts.

Jackson announced his decommitment from Georgia Tech via social media.

ACC football power rankings after Week 4: Florida State cements place atop the conference, Clemson drops

Here is a look at our ACC power rankings following Week 4 of the 2023 college football season.

The ACC looks very different this season, with Florida State taking down Clemson 31-24 in overtime as they cemented their spot atop the conference.

As Florida State held onto the top spot in the ACC, Clemson fell further down the rankings as they failed to take advantage of a huge opportunity. The ACC looks stronger than many expected heading into this season, and in a shocking turn, the Tigers are not among the top tier of this conference through four weeks.

There is a lot of season left for his to change, but right now, the conference looks far different than many would have expected. Here are our ACC football power rankings following Week 4 action.

ACC football power rankings after Week 1

Here is a look at our ACC power rankings following Week 1 of the 2023 college football season.

The 2023 college football season is in full swing, as each ACC team has officially participated in a game this season.

It was a wild week for the ACC, that saw some great matchups. Florida State proved that they are the real deal in their thrashing of LSU, while Duke upset Clemson in a 28-7 upset that no one saw coming

The ACC is back, and it was an exciting week, with each team showing us some of what we can expect this season. With the crazy week of football, we are releasing our first batch of ACC rankings for the 2023 season. Here is how I’m breaking down the ACC after Week 1’s performances.

Former Texas A&M QB Haynes King named as the starting signal caller at Georgia Tech

After transferring to Georgia Tech this offseason, former Texas A&M Quarterback Haynes King has reportedly been named as the starting signal caller for the Yellow Jackets this season.

What a journey it’s been for former Texas A&M quarterback Haynes King, who, after an up-and-down 2022 season with the Maroon and White, transferred to Georgia Tech as soon as the transfer portal opened its doors early December.

After a successful fall camp, King has reportedly been named the starting quarterback for Georgia Tech and Head Coach Brent Key, who is also entering his first entire season with the program.

As a member of Texas A&M’s 2020 recruiting class, King’s future with the Aggies was all but sealed after stepping on campus and instantly gaining the admiration of Head Coach Jimbo Fisher, but after earning the starting quarterback job during the 2021 campaign, a season-ending leg injury kept him on the sidelines preventing him from gaining SEC experience, leading to his early struggles as the starter for only two games before he was benched during the 2022 season.

After being named the starter ahead of the dreadful 2022 campaign, King’s performance in the memorable loss to Appalachian State resulted in multiple benchings during the highly publicized quarterback carousel endured by the program, as Max Johnson’s season-ending injury gave way to Conner Weigman’s eventual ascendance to the top of the depth chart.

King proceeded to throw for 1,220 yards, seven touchdowns, and eight interceptions in five games while battling a plethora of injuries and team attrition in the process, and endearing himself to most of the Aggie fan base due to his physical and mental toughness on the gridiron, no matter the result.

No matter how he performed on the field last season, I’d advise Tech fans to watch his high school tape at Longview (TX) because that’s the type of athlete the Yellow Jackets are getting. Congratulations, Haynes!

Updated ACC football projected win totals according to ESPN FPI

Despite all the hype around Florida State, ESPN’s FPI has Clemson as the ACC’s top projected team.

The 2023 college football season will be an intense one for the ACC, with a lot on the line. One of the most significant discussions of this off-season truly has become Clemson or Florida State. The Seminoles have become arguably the most hyped team in college football heading into 2023, with their new addition of former Michigan State wide receiver Keon Coleman adding even more fuel to the fire.

Despite the hype and most analysts seeing Florida State as the new top team in the ACC, ESPN’s FPI sees things differently.

According to ESPN, the FPI is a “measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 20,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule. Ratings and projections update daily. FPI data from seasons prior to 2019 may not be complete”.

This FPI has Clemson with the highest projected win total in the ACC, ahead of Florida State. Here is a full look at the projected win totals for each ACC team according to ESPN’s FPI.

Where each ACC football team lands in ESPN’s final preseason SP+ rankings

Where Clemson and the rest of the ACC stand in ESPN’s final preseason SP+ rankings update.

ESPN recently updated their final preseason SP+ ratings as we fast approach the 2023 season, with Clemson and Florida State remaining the top two teams in the ACC.

With the original release coming out in February, a lot has changed since the first SP+ for the 2023 season came out. This can happen for a variety of different reasons.

As a reminder, these projections are primarily based on returning production, recent recruiting, and the recent history of each program. Clemson is one of the few teams that didn’t move in these ranking updates, remaining at No.9.

Here’s a look at where  each ACC football team landed in the August update.
